In the case of Harold Ford it was one of the most laughably inept candidate roll outs in recent memory and I think finally at some point he got the message this was not going anywhere.

Harold can still get into the CT Senate race to take Dodd's seat. He can run as the urban Joe Lieberman.
His explanation on Morning Joe was laugh out loud-able. He decided not to run because it would have been an ugly race and it would have weakened his party for the republicans. So he threw himself on his sword for his party. No matter how you spin it, he seems to think if he won the primary he would have lost the general.

his nyt piece today is an awesome display of his sense of entitlement. it was laughable to read his condemnation of 'party bosses' obstructing his efforts to run ... he couldn't throw in a slam against 'banksters' just for fun.

I can't be sure, but two episodes of Colbert may have a lot to do with Ford's decision.
Colbert roasted Ford so bad ford went on his show for damage control and made it worse. Colbert didn't let up and Ford couldn't help but stick his foot in further down his mouth.

I agree about Ford being arrogant (as are most politicians) but he's not the only African American guest Imus had prior to the incident that sank him at MSNBC. I supported Ford when he ran in Tennessee but I simply don't think we need a conservative DLC Senator in NY. There are reasons not to like him, but I don't think his Imus appearances is one of them.

When DNC Chair Tim Kaine was asked about it by Rachel, he said "In Harold Ford's case, obviously [he's] a strong Democrat...with a great future in the Democratic Party."
Now I certainly didn't think Kaine would say anything that wasn't supportive of Ford on the air, but what concerned me was that I felt like he really meant what he was saying.
Ford's "going to continue to have a real strong voice in the Democratic Party". Really, Mr.Kaine?!
I understand how good looks, wealth, a privileged upbringing and zero integrity make a strong Republican with a great future in the Republican Party - but I think we should expect a whole lot more when it comes to Democrats.
Funny nobody has yet mentioned that Mr. Ford was (still is?)on Merrill-Lynch payroll and recieved what I am sure was a hefty bonus for services rendered. He was asked by someone on MSNBC to disclose the amount of this bonus and he refused, because he was not at that time officially running for the seat. He said in this interview that if he officially got into the race he would disclose the amount of his Merrill-Lynch bonus. His run was so short lived I don't think anyone got around to asking him that question again.
