Evan Bayh Announces His Retirement and Sticks It to Democrats One Last Time
Evan Bayh has decided to retire and another ConservaDem bites the dust. And the media blaming the dirty f#%king hippies for Bayh leaving will begin in 5, 4, 3, 2... Steve Benen has more on why he might be leaving and this lovely tidbit:
For what it's worth, a great deal of the early talk -- and by "early," I mean "the last hour" -- is about the DSCC recruiting Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D), a Blue Dog and former county police sheriff from Indiana's Southwest corner.
It appears that the signatures for a prospective candidate are due tomorrow, and it's extremely unlikely any Dem could pull this off in time. What's more likely, then, is that the Indiana Democratic Party will be responsible for selecting a candidate -- there would be no primary.
So Bayh made it next to impossible to have a strong candidate or anyone decent to replace him. Thanks Bayh. He's going to have a press conference a little later today.

I would almost rather have a Repub than a Blue Dog. At least you know how the Repub is going to vote and it doesn't have an affect on perceived party unity.
his wife, Susan, who serves on the board of WellPoint, one of the nation's largest health insurers, made $2.1Mil, last year.
Some stuff you can't make up!
now that she is not married to a vote in the Senate, or whether Evan Bayh will have to make an "honest" lobbyist out of himself.
"Folks, this is not your father's Republican Party."
Joe Biden
FYI Wellpoint is not a health insurer. They own Anthem Blue Cross, which is a health insurer. Wellpoint is a financial institution in the same category as AIG.

This whole deal smells of inside party politics underlaid with the corrupt stench of the DLC and the "New" Democrats.
Corruption favors the wealthy.
I'm surprised the democratic party hasn't already been sued for false advertising. They certainly don't care about democracy. or letting democrats vote for who they want.
So Blue Dogs and Bayh are against Democracy?
Please, someone find a way to run a primary
Somebody in Illinois who is a true Progressive should start a write-in campaign today if it's true that Bayh purposely waited until the last minute to announce he wouldn't be running for re-election.
If he made a DIRTY DEAL with the Democratic Party I hope to God that a true Progressive will try to mount a write-in campaign against ANY Democrat the "state/national apparatchiks" decide "they" want.
It's this type of dirty dealing that runs good Democrats away from the Democratic Party.
Disgusting, anti-democratic elitist bastards.

Bayh is from Indiana.
whole lotta palin going on!!!!!!!!!
√
He'll start a Non-profit and make millions.
And he'll still get his point A-cross.

I really don't see a Blue Dog retiring as 'sticking it to Democrats'.
They stick it to the Democrats every day they hold office by giving the illusion that the Dems have a huge majority.
I would rather have 51% truly progressive people in the Senate and House (Kucinich, Franken, Sanders, Weiner, Grayson, etc.) than a huge 60% majority that included conservative moles like Bayh.

GET THE WORD OUT!!!
So, did she actually get the signatures?
Chris Bowers, Please, for the love of God, don't help Tamyra D'Ippolito get on the ballot
Corruption favors the wealthy.
So he announced this two days before the filing deadline for the primaries?
What a colossal asshole!

The illusion of a Super majority continues to evaporate. Bernie and Joe + 58 now 57, maybe 56, never was a sure thing. Nothing real has been lost, only the perception of control has changed.
According to this opinion it may limit the GOP's options so much his timing could help Dems keep the seat.
Unlike Democrats, Republicans already have candidates vying for their party's nomination, including former Rep. John Hostetler and Senator-turned-lobbyist Dan Coats. Because the signature deadline is tomorrow, that pretty much sets the GOP field. Unless both Hostetler and Coats were to withdraw, Republicans won't be in a position to choose a nominee as will Democrats. The implication of that: Bayh's timing appears to make it nearly impossible for candidates like Rep. Mike Pence (who says he will not run despite Bayh's retirement) or Gov. Mitch Daniels to get on the ballot.

Did someone have to run out to get something and temporarily shut down the comments?
Seems they are open now so I'll try to remember what it was I wanted to say, other than his oldest son looked like the subject of a hostage tape while his dad was speaking.
[No. I think it was an accident. Sorry-Sitemonitor]
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
I was just trying to add a little levity to the situation. Thank you for opening them back up again.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
But, hey, if this posts . . . .
Corruption favors the wealthy.
Or Harold Ford Jr, who wants a senatorial job-any senatorial job will do-because he sees that big pot of lobbyist gold at the end of the rainbow.
I could see Rahm wanting it to go to the wire, too. So he could install a lame POS that's guaranteed to lose, like his 2008 debacle, and then say it's all he could get on such short notice.
Is Obama afraid of Rahm? Why doesn't he fire the guy?
me-oww!
There's always Dan Quayle's son. He's running for congress. Maybe he's ready for the senate?
Holy shit. I don't think we can deal with TWO palins at once.
Now THAT would be a SNL skit.
like Bush firing Cheney.
Perhaps Bayh is retiring so that he can enter the Westminster Dog Show tonight in the Yellow Dog breed. I believe that would be in the non-sporting group. It certainly wouldn't be in the working dog group.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

This is not that big of a loss for the Democratic party. I am more concerned with Obama's and Reid's lack of a spine. We know the replacement for Bayh is going to be another Blue Dog. We also know Bayh is on his way to a cushy high paid job on a corporate board or as a lobbyist. Who the hell does he thinks he's kidding. And for his jab at partisanship, it's his "bipartisanship" that has led to the destruction of America. Obama is following his lead, so why the hell is he complaining. WE ARE SCREWED! No matter who get his seat, the Democratic party is now too corporate and to weak and spineless to stand for working and poor people. And for those independents who still consider yourselves "middle class", you might want to notice the continued shrinking of the middle class. Your call for bipartisanship has led to your destruction. Good Job!
Thank God I never made it to the middle class. You can't blame me. Woohoo!
I voted republican a lot in the past. But I got tired of business as usual without new ideas to fix real problems. In the past 8 years the rich have gotten richer and the poor definately poorer - thus eliminating the "middle class". The standard of living of the $15-20/hr employee has gone right down the tubes. Many in congress lie to protect their own ass. All you can do is elect someone with morals and a brain to know what they don't know. That's why smart people are usually recruited to run successful companies. I respect Obama's efforts and hope he can hold on and prevail. The only real republican I can respect at this time is the one who is republican solely because they are committed to their anti-abortion beliefs. At least they are committed. Remember - The biggest problem we face, in the world, is "Personal Greed" - it controls everything.
The democrats brought this on themselves when they jumped in bed with the corporate blue dogs. They as a party should have known these people would not leave loyally. These blue dogs are setting themselves up for kick backs and anyone in the party should have seen it. The 2008 elections are going to go down as a disaster for the democrats because they went with so many pretend a dems who where able to block real change. The after effects of the bush years should have reversed the last 30 years of an overall policy shift to the right. This shift has left our country off balance and endangered the future of our country. We need to head left to get back to center, but because of these self destructive actions by the democrats in the 2008 elections and this congressional term that is likely not to happen.
Bayh knows exactly what he is doing and knows the calendar. Bayh is not threatened in his seat, so that's not the reason, I’ll tell you straight-up the reason, Bayh couldn't force his minority, with-in the Majority view down our throats, so he's sticking it too us and leaving us in a lurch, he knows he has done this on purpose, don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise.
It was a support, campaign with Obama, sell change, then switch and sand bag, thinking we’d follow him, knowing we would not if he’d had the guts to run for President in the first place and campaign and sell his Moderate ideology to us face to face, he knew we knew, the Nation knew we would not buy it, after the sell-out years of Bush, deregulating our future and loading Supreme Court, is just one factual eveidence of the screw.

Q. What do you have to do, who do you have to know to get a Republican/Conservative to cooperate on any legislation?
A. (1) Give lots of money to their favorite charity.
(2) Give lots of money to their favorite lobbyist.
(3) Give lots of money to their mistress(es).
(4) Give lots of fundraisers for their PAC.
(5) Give lots of time and money to their campaign.
(6) Take the teeth out of all regulations.
(7) Water down and gut all progressive bills.
(8) Cut taxes that would support your programs.
(9) If it is a good bill, let them take full credit for it.
(10) Know Eric, Mitch, John, and John: also Dick and Karl, Rush, and Glenn.
Nobody knows Sarah or what she stands for as far as I can tell.
Good riddance to a right-wing conservative "Democrat".
The party is better off in the long run. Now if we could just get the rest of the blue dogs to retire.
Bummer about this "majority" that has done NOTHING for the Democrats to date.
This turd is simply looking out for himself. I guess that's reasonable to understand. But I have zero respect for the piece of shit.
He COULD HAVE retired in a way as to give the Democratic ticket an equal chance. Nice going, shit-for-brains.
I'm so tired of these irresponsible, weak-spined politicians.
Let's just hope the reich-wingers don't get a majority...or the party has just begun.
...he doesn't "stick it to Democrats" so much as he gives a big, fat middle finger to the whole of Congress while saying, in essence, that he's jumping off a sinking ship so as to avoid blame when the whole thing falls in on itself.
..to keep an eye on those rats when they leave the ship. It will be interesting to see how much time Bayh decides to spend in DC versus the boardrooms in IN and elsewhere.
When ever I hear anyone in washington is leaving. Anytime any senator or congressman or woman, quits, or dies, or gets put in prison it is a good thing for America!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
What took you so long to get your tired, useless ass out of Washington? You'll be a better useless hick in Indiana than you were in Washington So long fool
Woody McBreairty
The only way things are gonna change is when people are able to vote online, at home. You will see voter participation hit 80/90%. And I don't wanna hear about hackers and that bullsh!t. We have corrupt elections now. We can't do any worse.
An online voting system would probably be impossible to verify. If you think the voter corruption is bad now, give the corporate the chance to get their greedy paws on an online computer voting system like that. Game over, Democracy dead.
As a Hoosier, I consider this good news. We don't need any elephants in donkey clothing. That includes Brad Ellsworth and the other blue dog "Democrats" from Indiana. We need a progressive candidate with real ideas for moving this country forward rather than the corporate flunkies we mostly have. Actually, Andre Carson has been good, but good luck getting a black Muslim elected to the Senate in Indiana.
Bye bye Bayh. Good riddance.
Being from Indiana, all I can say is don't expect a progressive to occupy his seat ever, ever, ever. It will be more of the same or worse.
I am going to be attending the Democratic meet-ups from now until then to voice my opinion. You should too. Progressives need to explain why progressive representatives are important. The facts are all on our side...we just need to make them known.
If the Indiana Democratic party can't find a decent candidate to replace fake Democrat Evan Bayh, chalk up another successful torpedo job to the Lieberman-belched and there was Evan Bayh.
One suggestion for the Indiana Dems: If you're going to lose anyway, then you might as well run a real Democrat. At least give voters a choice for once!
I want a progressive candidate that I can enthusiastically endorse. With Evan Bayh in office we were choosing between two Republicans.
Theatre MSM is framing this as an epic change in the playing field. They've gone back to the football framing, now of urgent mortal and moral issues. The MSM players are also football players, not just the elected officials. Theatre MSM will be the very last to acknowledge that the Republican party is fading and the horror of the last eight years is coming crashing in on them.
How could Wolf and Cooper and Campbell have missed it? How could Tom and Brian and George and Barbara and Katie have let it go so far?

Goodbye you back stabbing TURD sure hope they flush real hard so you go a long way and are never heard from again.
Does Emmanuel have abymore Dead Head dead Beats he wants to assist in office so we can defeat ourselves.
Too bad he is not more like his father. I am not sad he is leaving.
I am tired of politics feeling like a football game where half the players are wearing the wrong damned jersy.
i can't stand that little dickless wonder. he and his shitty gutless ilk (landrieu, lincoln, ben nelson, and professional shit-sack lieberman) already fucked the democratic party over but good. there's nothing left but the crying over the tremendous once in a lifetime opportunity that the dems managed to piss all over. what a study in cowardice and brain-dead stupidity. it's enough to make me throw up.
Do allow the door to hit you in the ass on the way out, Evan.
Must have got one hell of an offer to lobby for someone . Good riddance .
"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."
"Susan Bayh, sits on the board of WellPoint in her hometown of Indianapolis. Over the last six years, Susan Bayh has received at least $2 million in compensation from WellPoint alone for serving on its board. She joined Anthem Insurance (the precursor organization to WellPoint) in 1998 Her work background at the time she was appointed to the Anthem board would have been surprising, given that she had no insurance experience and was relatively young and inexperienced to serve as a director on a multibillion-dollar board.
However, Susan Bayh had one competitive advantage that made her stand out as attractive to Anthem: She was married to Evan Bayh -- former governor of Indiana who, in 1998, was elected to the U.S. Senate."
"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."
Just like lieberman, here we have yet another whiny titty-baby who just can't stand the nastiness of the Senate. So he quits. Again..with no thought of the party or the country. Just freaking quit. I wonder if Susan will still have a job? After all...there is no one to pull the strings anymore.
Byah Byah!
get it, it's like bye bye. Hmmmm... when you got you got it
