Egypt on the Brink of Revolution?
Egyptian journalist Mona Eltahawy joined The Dylan Ratigan Show for his daily rant to explain why America should support the protests in Egypt.

Egyptian journalist Mona Eltahawy joined The Dylan Ratigan Show for his daily rant to explain why America should support the protests in Egypt.
Aljazeera is saying there are between several hundred thousand and as many as two million Egyptians in the central square of Cairo.
They also are reporting that the Army has stated precisely that it will not move against the people.
It seems to me that is already a revolution.
The question always is: is the government more afraid of the people than the people are afraid of their government.
The Egyptians clearly on both sides, now seem to have answered that question for themselves.
What is more, it has moved beyond Egypt as protests in Jordan now have reportedly caused the King there to dismiss the government.
And Saudi Arabia, to me, would be a huge and amazing proposition should the expression of the desire for a more just society, for democracy move into the streets there.
Whose side are we on? I think we should make that very clear very soon, too sadly, we have much blood on our hands.

and everyone else in the world to make clear that they support the Egyptians but it would be foolish for the US government to to do anything but what it is doing and that is leaving it up to the Egyptians. I find it odd that so many people demand that the US interfere in another nation's affairs while they regularly lament US interference in other nation's business. I've pointed this out before but it is pretty common knowledge that a statement of support by the government of the United States is often the kiss of death of revolutionary movements. Diplomacy requires that the US and most other countries engage diplomatically with other nations who have less than savory reputations as far as human rights go. Such is life. That does not mean they support them. There were very good reasons why the US allied with Mubarak and for all the hand wringing and pearl clutching about it now on the left I think it is fair to ask why were there so many posts here (and on other blogs) bashing every misstep, real or imagined, by Israel but virtually nothing about this terrible Egyptian dictatorship. The treatment of the Palestinians by the Egyptians was hardly better than anything the Israelis did barring the military incursions. The criticism of Egypt was quite muted across the entire American political spectrum. Why was that?

Awesome spin BTW.

I know this is an evil thought, but WHAT IF the people who started the protests in Egypt were their "Teabaggers"? :)

America is on the side of the Egyptian people. The United States is not.
Humpty Dumpty was pushed.

Yep. The key to any government overthrow is who the military will side with. The decision by the military basically means, there is no government in Egypt.
Mubarak is done. If he's not on his way out of the country already, he's on the phone working out the details. Given past U.S. CIA "assistance" to foreign dictators, I suggest he fly commercial.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
to do anything truly significant to help the Egyptian people they would be working to find a suitable place of exile for Mubarak and I'm willing to bet they are.

Yeah, but as I've seen elsewhere, that big-assed border crossing called Iraq is a bitch...

There to many safe guards in America to get any protest going on how the Banks and Wakstreet fucked over the people in the US. If there ever was any protest marches going the "NEWS" will never put it on TV. Look at the people who were at the Cochs billionaires who put millions to make the tea bagers they were on there side. shit the only think billionaires think is how to make more money, fuck any one. Then the tards dont go after the people who are the assholes they go after the wrong person. I live in a country that is full of fuck-tards. any looking out side and see the weather in texas. there is not proof of cl;imate change. what a room full of dipshits.
most of the people here know what going on, the people out there, you could sell them land on the side of a cliff.
The biggest bank heist in U.S. history was in 1933. Franklin Roosevelt in his Emergency Banking Relief Act confiscated all gold bullion in all bank safety deposit boxes. This gold ended up financing the rebuilding of German industry, and the Nazi military. It's in the history books if anyone cares to look. The Banks collapsed because the Federal Reserve printed far more money than they had gold to back it.
When hard times hit, people pulled their money out of the banks just to survive. The banks had to foreclose on peoples homes, farms, and business' or be foreclosed themselves.

I did not realize this site had such a thin skin. My favorite liberal used to talk at length about "Useful I _ _ _ _ _ s" and how important they were.
As to my reply above.
Real research is done in libraries like my favorite the Federal Repository at Emory University.
I was not written by President Roosevelt, but by bankers for the benefit of bankers.
Emergency Banking Relief Act of 1933
Sections 2 and 3 prohibited hoarding, melting, etc, of gold by private citizens and gave the Treasury the right to confiscate all privately held gold, paying for it with cash. That cash was not backed by gold, as it had been before.
A modest study of the history of banking, and paper money will expose that all paper money ever experimented with have all failed, and for the same reasons. The governments, or banks print more paper money than they have gold or silver to back it.
It happened in 1933, 1965, and 1971 in this country first with gold, then silver. Where do you think Germany got the gold to rebuild it's industry, and Military after their Great Depression and currency collapse?, at the same time tons of gold was being shipped out of American banks.

Panglossians around the USA awaiting something like an election in Egypt are going to be disappointed.
They have had elections regularly. It seems they always were rigged. Maybe they still will be.
Like ours.

Like the someone said here yesterday...sounds just like home. The only difference is folks here aren't imprisoned and tortured for speaking out against the government...so far anyway...or unless your name is Bradley Manning.
Government + the Federal Reserve = organized crime
is also a big factor here. This is not Iran 1979.

"Certainly no one will deny that Arab dictators use the cause for their own gain, but for Eltahawy to write about Palestine as an “opiate” and a burden (from her comfy perch at Borders in NYC according to Twitter) is not only offensive, but remarkably out of touch. She must be upset because the burden of Palestine prevents her from getting published in more zionist rags like JPost. The average falafel ball has a better understanding of “that conflict” and its direct causal relationship to 30+ years of Egyptian repression than Mona Eltahawy. She needs to ikhras."

... you might want to capitalize your reference to Ratigan's 'Daily Rant' segment... in your non-caps version, it appears that you are criticizing Ratigan for his daily rant.
Just sayin'...
for US government support for the ouster of Mubarak and support for the coalition he apparently will lead. That was a serious tactical error that will likely cost him in the future. It is a serious confession of weakness to even suggest that his coalition requires US assistance or even approval and it will doubtless lead to accusations in the future that he himself is a puppet. Nasser would never have made such a mistake.
