Ed Schultz takes on the Republican fear mongering that's stirring up the crazies at these town hall meetings.

But first, tonight's "OpEd."

Goofy? Yes. Spooky? Yes. And a guy shows up with a gun at a presidential town hall.

If that's not dangerous, I don't know what is.

Now, to do all of this justice, I have to show you this first tonight. Take a look at what happened inside the town hall meetings of Senator Arlen Specter and Senator Claire McCaskill today.

Here it is.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You and your cronies in the government do this kind of stuff all the time. Well, I don't care!

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I do not want to pay on a health care plan that includes the right for a woman to kill her unborn baby.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't want this country turning into Russia, turning into a socialized country.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: What it says is, as a 74-year-old man, if you develop cancer, we're pretty much going to write you off.

MCCASKILL: You don't trust me?

AUDIENCE: No!

MCCASKILL: Hey! Hey!

OK. Ma'am-OK.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SCHULTZ: Fear, fear, and more fear.

And outside the president's rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, today, this was the scene. Wild Bill Hicock shows up.

What is this guy's program? Can it get any worse? Well, it does.

This is vandalism outside Congressman David Scott's office in Georgia. He held a town hall meeting a couple of nights ago. He was greeted with a four-foot-tall swastika today.

And this is how the president is being depicted in Maryland at Senator Ben Cardin's town hall meeting-Obama with a Hitler-like moustache.

You know, this is not the country that we should be proud of right now. These folks have got to be distanced from the Republican Party. You would think that the Republican party would step and up say, these aren't our people.

This is all a product of the Republican fear mongering that's taking place out there. This is really all the game that they have right now. It's a party without a message.

So, what happens? The fringe fills in the vacuum.

Today, the president went on the offensive. I tell you, President Obama was on top of his game today. He hit on the four major points on all the talking points that they've been hammering the White House with-

Medicare, death panels, public option, and taxes.

I thought he did it with tremendous clarity.

The big questions I've had, and someone asked it today, how are you going to pay for this reform? I mean, you're really all concerned about the money, aren't you? With Republicans, it's all about the money.

Here comes a piece of truth from the president. Here's the answer.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OBAMA: It should not burden people who make $250,000 a year or less. And I think that's the commitment that I made, the pledge that I made when I was up here running in New Hampshire, folks.

So, I don't want anybody saying somehow that I'm, you know, pulling the bait and switch here. I said very specifically, I thought we should roll back Bush tax cuts and use them to pay for health insurance. That's what I'm intending to do.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SCHULTZ: Got that, top two percent? You're going to get taxed if all this goes through. That means 98 percent of Americans, you don't have to worry about it. Middle-classers, you're not going to get taxed when it comes to health care reform.

He also pointed out that insurance companies are rationing care right now. The president threw the bullet points right back in their face today in a very classy manner, and did it with the facts.

1 think Michelle Obama was vindicated again.

of one of your comments.

Michelle is the one that roped me.

This is the speech that made me cry like a little girl!

If you watch no other video for the rest of your life watch this video!

That was AMAZING! Thanks, Hunter!

Yes Hunter, Thanks!

Did y'all see some of the comments on that video?
Fuckin racist redneck assholes!!!

I'm not defending the right wing crazies but some of the tricks they learned from our left wing loons:

http://www.thomasalbert.com/politics/protest/...
http://www.thomasalbert.com/politics/protest/...
http://www.thomasalbert.com/politics/protest/...
http://www.thomasalbert.com/politics/protest/...

Those are just from one protest. Sure, we were protesting a war and the imminent catastrophy it created and that is much more noble than protesting healthcare for the less fortunate in our society which is outright ignorant or sociopathic, and we may not have had the violence, but we had plenty of crazies anyway. Just wanted to bring some perspective to our outrage on the left.

I see NOTHING crazy in those images.

By DEFINITION Bush is in fact a war criminal and a terrorist.

Bush/Cheney killed 1 million Iraqis and made 5 million refugees!
Bush/Cheney shredded the constitution!
Bush/Cheney tortured!

Bush sent troops to the "Stan" and accomplished NOTHING, except killing several dozen wedding parties and increasing opium production 400%.

To equate the MOST virtuous protest of illegal war with what the teabaggers are doing IDENTIFIES you as a MsM programmed troll.

Now go get your fucking shinebox!

http://www.answers.com/topic/war-crime

Stupid Git ain't no troll!!!

but at one point Bobby Jindal was not a Catholic. Not 'til his Daddy showed him that grocery stores with the shelves stocked with goodies like Quaker Oats cereal products.

I am sorry but a troll by definition is trying to start shit, and comparing valiant anti war protectors with the teabaggers is unacceptable anywhere, especially here!

and is usually not starting shit.

OK

LnM I am sorry. Do you see the what I am saying though?

Yeah I do see what you're saying.
But ya gotta admit, there are crazies on both ends of the spectrum.

Here's an image that's equally derogatory of both.

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/FUuURZQ1...

Fair and balanced.

that made me jump!

Did you see the war protesters which were beaten , fined , jailed for standing up for Our democracy and the crimes of Bush and friends.. They even pull a person out of a meeting for having a anti Bush statement on their T-Shirt.. These people were even carrying guns shouting death threats..

Moveon.org was censored for a news ad statement about Petraeus. These was a paid health corporate republican backed mob that was just there to shut down a debate and had no point to give to the meeting..

I also did not see the news media report on the hundreds of thousands across the country at the time in which they protested Bush Crimes and the war.. But this small group receive national attention and credibility for anti-American democracy process of a public meeting.. And this was suppose to be a debate on a policy to be pass and they were there to shut ALL debate down not to add a d.. thing...

I had friends jailed during war prtotests, the RNC convenstion in NYC and other protests. Two were on the FBI watch list for protests (The list was reported in the NY Times). My comment had nothing to do with the environment of the protests. It was about the drama-queens comparing BUsh to Hitler without any awareness of the atrocities committed under Clinton.

http://www.democracynow.org/2005/9/22/governo...

When Ed Schultz points out "loony" right wingers for comparing Obama to Hitler and we get outraged it's a little weak considering Obama is continuing the policies of Bush who we compared to Hitler.

Outrage for the things you mention above is legit. Calling the right wing protesters loons for being against a healthcare plan that would benefit our nation is legit. Getting in a huff because they act like drama queens in the same way our own loons do is hypocritical.

Yeah, I'm more of a gnome.

Traveling around the world gettin your pictures taken at famous landmarks...
I know your kind!!!

.

I travel around the world and SMOKE at famous landmarks.

Mine's a better life!

my backside!
I'm waaaay to poor to travel of this stupid island, much less out of country! }:p>

I'm trying to open some minds to understanding instead of ignorant condemnation that should have been left on the playground. Sadly, it seems "empathy" and critical thinking are not hallmarks of our American society. Bellicosity and righteousness sure are though.

I was at those anti-war rallies. I protested the Afghan & Iraq wars.

I also protested Clinton for intentionally starving hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children.

I also protest Bush Sr. for his war in Iraq.

When I see Nazi comparisons I cringe because whoever is making the comparison is obviously a drama-queen and/or ignorant of what Hitler really did.

Call Bush Jr. a Nazi if you like, but if you're not willing to call Clinton one for the brutal sanctions he imposed on the Iraqis
"(because punishing Saddam "was worth it")
or Obama one for continuing and even expanding on Bush's war policies than you have no principles and only care about partisan crap.

We are run by a war-mongering, oil-glutton, Wall Street owned government. You keep pretending Obama is a righteous warrior of peace and prosperity. I'll continue trying to wake people up.

The primary definition of "troll" on both left and right blogs is "someone who disagrees with me".

To the Bush/Cheney's torture , treason , illegal spying , sell out of our constitution then you lose me.
To place Obama which has been in office for 6 months in over the top..
Clinton did things I disagree with but to compare him to Bush/Cheney just doesn't hold water..
Obama has changed his policies on free trade and the war in Iraq looks as if he will not leave , and if he does will still have almost the same amount of troops Bush did while fighting in Iraq.
I funded , supported and voted for Obama and his campaign promises and to get rid of a republican.. But Obama's administration seems to be the 3th term of George Bush...

From Democracy Now:

AMY GOODMAN: But the U.N. sanctions, for example, the sanctions led to the deaths of more than a half a million children, not to mention more than a million Iraqis.

GOVERNOR RICHARDSON: Well, I stand behind the sanctions. I believe that they successfully contained Saddam Hussein. I believe that the sanctions were an instrument of our policy.

http://www.democracynow.org/2005/9/22/governo...

Compare those numbers to these:
http://www.iraqbodycount.org/
Now tell me who was worse.

Clinton also had illegal spying. Obama is increasing it. Yeah, six months in office is impressive to already make Bush policies seem downright wholesome. Bagram? Know anything about that one? I could go on but I'm not your history teacher.

I swear, some here are just as bad as delusional Republicans that think of Reagan as an idol of core Republican values even though he sold weapons to Iran & Iraq, increased taxes, negotiated with commie leaders and sold drugs to finance illegal wars - and his wife listened to astrologers instead of Jesus - the ultimate heathen liberal crime.

History is a tricky thing. People tend to believe what makes them happy, not what is true.

Being a liberal does not mean supporting a Democrat no matter what atrocities they commit.

http://www.nytimes.com/library/world/mideast/...

and it seems inevitable because I don't see anybody doing a damn thing about it.

Some if not most of these town hall meetings look like a scene from a Monty Python movie or skit.

[Comment Deleted By Administration For Violation Of Terms Of Service]

"Shut your festering gob, you tit! Your type makes me want to puke! You coffee-nosed, malodorous pervert!!!"

"What? I came here for a townhall meeting."

"Oh, I'm sorry, this is abuse."

No you're not!

2. Conservative or Bourgeois Socialism
A part of the bourgeoisie is desirous of redressing social grievances in order to secure the continued existence of bourgeois society.

Yesterday Joe and Mika were complaining because the President didn't get any hard questions in NH. I guess they didn't bother to listen to his speech because if they had they would have known he answered most of the questions then. He debunked the stupid shit before anyone had a chance to ask about it. To ask him about that stuff after his speech would have made the person asking the question look stupid.

someone shouting a lie constitutes a hard question.

as Joe and Mika look for saying what they did... what a waste of water those two are...

What a waste of water, brewed by Starbucks!tm

I swear ta friggin goawd...I gotta put a damn sign on my door, "Do NOT disturb! Watching the damn news!"
My damn neighbors come over almost daily, and talk about their problems, like I should give a shit...( I do kinda, but don't tell nobody...it would spoil my image!)
Even after I ask them to be quiet, they can't help but start talkin again 30 seconds later.

Ask them if they're Republicans.

and a creationist that swears the planet is only 6000 years old.
BUT...he's sick at what's happening at these townhall meetings.
The other neighbor is from England, and I had to explain to her the differences between the parties, and the differing ideologies in each party...
And she said "Well then...I'd say I'm a liberal Democrat"
Then we got high and ordered a pizza.

...on the propaganda network or the right wing radio talk shows....NEVER!

THIS is the problem folks. We have a "propaganda machine" going right now in this country, run by the neocons, evangelical "nut cakes", the special interests (eg gun rights, separatists, anti-abortion/gays, etc.) and the big corporations - insurance industry, pharma-industries, banks, BIG money. We have not "information", but "propaganda" of lies and scare tactics that are keeping America DUMB!

President Obama needs to keep talking...over and over and over again; but never underestimate the power of the propaganda machine in this country. Some people....MANY people refuse to hear anything but the propaganda, and they shut off any other sources that conflict with their twisted logic and bull shit that is stuffed between their ears. I know...I have brothers and sisters that FIT THE BILL. Dumb asses....ignorant morons that WANT TO BE ignorant.

We are a country of morons, and we have little to be proud of when it comes to our citizens.

"neocons, evangelical "nut cakes", the special interests (eg gun rights, separatists, anti-abortion/gays, etc.) and the big corporations - insurance industry, pharma-industries, banks, BIG money"

You will be wishing for all those groups to be in charge after what comes next! George Bush will actually seem like a good guy when the real fascist make there move. Those groups made a pact with the devil, and it will spiral out of control.

It's too late for Obama. He's done. He should start planning an escape flight to Europe, as well as preparing his government in exile after what happens next.

George blood sipper Bush a good guy? World class dumbass troll here folks.

Ignorant, zero information Conservative slave's been here 40 minutes.

I don't think he was talking about that, at all...

Alas, it seems some people are going to be massively disappointed when this country does not implode and manages to do a slight recovery. The whole out of control hyperbole is starting to get really really really annoying... IMHO.

I would love to have a recovery. But it doesn't seem like it will come soon enough.
This is not just economics.

There are cultural changes happening and some certain very well armed folks are not liking it. Things are not always so black and white. Calling GW a bloodsipper is the same thing that the right is doing to demonize Obama. Except that the right has race and the fear of communism on their side to exploit.
When these folks come to power they will shoot GW in the street just as fast as they hang Obama.

http://www.salemstate.edu/~cmauriello/pdfEuro...

We are at stage 3.
It's getting close to midnight, and then there will be no turning back.

I'll also be here for awhile.

)O(

we may need a capt. midnight according to LIExpressway. i hope capt. midnight has something to foil the black helicopters/pandemic coming. if he didn't upgrade he's technology it could be trouble.

I hope your right. I honestly do.

you're smarter than that. Let's see if you deny that.

TROLL!

i wanna know how to pack.

... half-assed fascists are better than real fascists?

... George Bush will seem like a good guy? You mean he isn't?

... as always, the rest of you cowardly bastards are going to keel over in a faint the moment a real threat shows up?

My point is that GW is not a true fascist. He may do some fascist like things but he is not a fascist nor do I think he is a good guy.
In other words GW is not a fascist the same way many other dictators or leaders who torture their enemies and start wars are not fascist.
Facism is a very unique and dangerous phenomenon. If GW was a real fascist the protesters I see in Union Square every Saturday would have been hung from lamppost by now. We can deal with GW by voting him out of office and prosecuting him and his cronies. I don't think a fascist would let that even be a viable thought in your mind before he took mass action. The liberals don't carry pitchforks in America.

I when the NSDAP was meeting in a Bavarian basement, there many other militant "Tea Party" groups in Germany and they were protesting against "Socialism" as well. The succeeded beyond even their wildest dreams not because they were strong, but because liberal democracy was failing and progressives were weak.

"as always, the rest of you cowardly bastards are going to keel over in a faint the moment a real threat shows up?"

How do you know I am a coward. The only thing you know about me is that I am a progressive.

Again everything is not so black and white.

)O(

Fascism is extreme right

Communism extreme left

But the end result, as far as the proletariat are concerned, can be similar: authoritarianism, totalitarianism and perhaps oligarchism.

Communism has never existed on earth as of yet if you go by what Engels and Marx's thought. The closest we have had are the socialist nations of northern Europe.

Fascism is a political movement.
Communism is a theoretical social system.

If Marx lived to see Fascism he might have had to rewrite alot of what he wrote.

Communism just happens.
Fascist make it happen.

"If you want things to stay the same, were gonna have to make some changes."- something a fascist would say.

They keep talking about the right...the bad information...the lack of facts, etc. I want to know why the media is standing around saying, "Look at these crazy wingnuts! Why don't they know the truth and the facts?" Stop talking about the bad info and start disseminating the truth! Play Obama's speech...over and over and over...rebut the lies...over and over and over. Ed, KO, Rachel, et.al. should be devoting most of thier hour to the TRUTH. They wonder why the right's message is sticking? Because they saturate the airwaves! I channel surfed for hours looking for bits of Obama's speech, I found a two sentence loop that each station spent all of 30 seconds covering. If the media is in the bag for Obama, like the right says...well...ur doin it rong!

speaking the truth to the sheeple... hopefully they'll listen up!

watch.

Not sure if they have the ability any more ........

"UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't want this country turning into Russia, turning into a socialized country."

OMG - I hafta run and get some paper towels to clean the coffee off my screen!

We're about to get a new puppy and one of the first training tasks is to socialize him.

"UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't want this country turning into Russia, turning into a socialized country."

Good for her. Hopefully she will get her fat ass back in the kitchen, make her man dinner, clean up, suck his dick, and let him impregnate her...just like a good Christian American woman should.

Stupid cow.

Or maybe like the masses she'll actually read a book and learn what is going on ........ though for her at the other majority, I doubt it.

1) For decades liberals have been mocking mainstream Americans for their perceived intellectual shortcomings and treating any concern that goes against liberal preferences as ignorant, racist, misogynistic, etc when we could have been explaining to them what good libearlism does for them and how Republicans have been kissing their asses but fucking them blind.
2) There is nothing whatsoever to stop President Obama from making a prime-time televised address esplaining where he stands and how opponents of healthcare have been deliberately lying in an effort ot confuse and frighten the public and explain to the nation the real choices that we face. Nothing, that is, except his own apparant lack of leadership. And a bunch of piss-ant town halls aren't going to do it.

If we don't communicate, people can't know.

... that not even Obama knows what kind of health care he wants to propose.

That is the problem with the definition that Mr. Obama has about being a "pragmatist" and how it is influenced his approach to politics. Given how diverging his definition of "change" is from the one commonly accepted by the rest of the English speaking community, I just want to take a peek into Mr. Obama's dictionary so I can at least figure out where he is coming from next time... rather than go through the whole "build up, massive let down" cycle.

1)Our mainstream is chock full of intellectual shortcomings, ignorance, racism, misogyny, et al. If you really need hard evidence of this, try to watch the nation's top grossing film this weekend, follow that up by listening to Billboard's top selling album for the week, and then watch the top-rated television program for a week. Just try to still feel your brain.

2)If you remember, Pres. Obama held a nationally televised press conference in which he spent 55 minutes clearly outlining his proposed plan. What did the mainstream media focus on, though? The last 5 minutes he spent discussing the Skip Gates fiasco.

)O(

I prefer to feel other portions of my anatomy.

)O(

And I want you to know that I support your right to maturbation, especially the intellectual variety, which you so often excel at.

Turn the Blueg... is a perfect example of how our side manages to ghettoize itself. "Our mainstream is chock ful of intellectual shortcomings, ignroance, racism" yadda, yadda, yadda. Yes, and our side does virtually nothing to counter it except complain to ourselves about how stupid those other people are and to treat them in an insulting or condescending manner. Brilliant. And I don't buy it that our mainstream is misogynystic. Not when Oprah is one of our nation's most respected intellectual leaders, God help us. There are unflattering portrayals of women just as there are unflattering portyals of men because there are, unfortunately, a lot of assholes out there on both sides. The evidence for pervasive misogyny, however, has never been very convincing to anyone but feminsts and feminst hatred of men is far easier to show--Andrea Dworkin anyone?

A big speech has far more impact than a press conference, plus the reporters don't get to interrupt you and hijack the conversation with irrelevant questions. Put another way, by keeping reporters out, Obama takes control. Also, Obama's answer about Professor Skip, which presumed both that Gates acted intelligenty and the cop stupidly, was quite the prejudicial blunder.

Actually, when someone is willfully ignorant, racist and misogynistic explaining to them that Republicans are kissing their asses and fucking them blind doesn't work. That's the whole point of what's going on here. When people (including Obama) try to explain it to them they yell at them and say they're lying.

It goes beyond a simple misunderstanding of how any proposed changes in healthcare are going to work. It's us and them. Trying to explain is just a reason to attack. Hell, even when you figure people would learn by experience some find a way to force it into their pre-written narrative (somehow it's the fault of immigrants, Democrats and whoever else I don't like...).

That woman saying she didn't want the country to turn into Russia? She was interviewed on Fox afterwards. Asked what she thought about the ANSWER she got to her emotional outburst she said she was so emotional about saying it that she was unable to focus on the answer she got. They couldn't make it any clearer that the last thing they want is a reasonable answer, correction or explanation. They just want a target for their anger.

Sometimes people are willfully ignorant but sometimes they're not. Take the whole New Haven FD thing. Here you had a bunch of white firefighters who were told that, in order to get a promotion, they had to pass a test. So they took the test, passsed and were then denied because all the blacks taking the test failed. In other words, they were openly discriminated against because they were white. When asked to explain why this makes sense, liberals say that the blacks failed because of cultural differences w/o explaining how this works. Unless you can show the public at large why the explanation makes sense you're going to have lots of people who not unreasonably believe that the white firefighters were cheated. But our side's response is a combination of neglect and insults and then we become angry when they decide that Republicans are their friends. Brilliant.

It's always right, when someone honestly asks a question to try as best you can to give them a reasonable answer. But I don't see what this has to do with what we're talking about here, where people are trying to give people reasonable anaswers and they proudly reject them.

In this case we're not talking about anybody who took a test they were told would get them a promotion if they passed and then didn't get the promotion. We're talking about people screaming about vague, made up horrors. When someone says "these things don't exist" or even point out what's being distorted, they just say they're lying.

How have they decided the Republicans are their friends here? Because it seems like part of it is just telling them what they want to hear (even if they're screwing them over), no matter how untrue or wrong it is.

My point is that they often don't get reasonable answers. I have a tendency to play devil's advocate and I am often struck by how amzingly shallow the thinking on our side often is. Your response is a fairly represenative sample.

If you're a white person who loses out on a job you've earned to give it to a black person who hasn't fulfilled the requirement you have and watch as they keep changing the rules until blacks pass, you're going to be both baffled and pissed. If liberals airily explain away the fact that blacks failed to pass the test because of "cultural differences" without giving a compelling explanation as to why that assertion makes sense and/or treat the baffled and deprived firefighters to lectures of past racial discrimination they had nothing to do with and then top it off by castigating them as racists for refusing to agree with you then congratulations on making a bunch of Rush Limbuagh fans.

Then there was the Duke lacrosse case in which liberals, especially feminists, decided that the players were guilty because they were almost all lily white and that the accuser had been raped because she was a black woman. I read reams of blather about these guys felt entitled to rape a black woman being so priviledged and everything and watched as people who pointed out obvious holes in the accuser's story were called racists and misogynysts. Only problem of course is that they were quite obviously innocent. Our side is immensely prejudiced too only we're so stuck on ourselves for bravely fighting other people's prejudice that we often completely fail to see our own.

Ed: "this is not a country we should be proud of right now"

When should we have been proud of this country? When we elected Nixon, Reagan and George W Bush twice?

goes back to 1965 and the Civil Rights Act

It all goes back to Mr. Lincoln's facist/socialist usurpation of private property. Everythinbg in between that and the actions of 65 were merely making the best of a bad situation.

Ha!

But them oldsters aren't the voting oldsters that are alive now

Why do you think they fear that Obama would even want to have a Death Squad?

Because these folks ancestors lynched Obama's ancestors. Maybe they're afraid of comeuppance?

in trying to free the property of good hard working
planter families, none of the ancestors of those planter's overseers would be angry today.

You cannot be referring to his black ancestors. They didn't get caught and shipped over. He was born in Kenya, remember?< /p>

That R Whitey tells them.

During the '70's they watched as all of the civil service jobs (they thought) that were marked for their sons and grandsons disappeared. It turned them forever

That R Whitey. Is he related to the I B Whitey who was raised up by black folk?

;)

Or if you want more recent history, we should be proud of invading a nation on false pretenses resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children?

Need we ask any other question as Americans?

Ignorant fearful white folk.

Some are more hateful than fearful.

I want to see all their birth certificates!

Apparently the writer of the story "The Pod People" got it wrong. In the story, the people walked around like passive zombies acting normal. Everything is just the opposite, they're not zombies, just operating with 1/2 of a brain.

as an exemplar of 'what's good in US," we are well, and truly, and eternally FUCKED...

over Rush Limbaugh's any day. Ugghhh..

than cat crap.

... as the Right disrupts Town Meetings.

It is now the day after Senator Benjamin Cardin's Town Hall meeting in Hagerstown, MD, and I have had plenty of time to see what the local papers and television news have covered on it... plus I spent some time looking into the web sites of organizations that pushed attendees to the meeting (like Resistnet.com) and the prearranged instructions they put out to make sure nothing was reasonably discussed.

And this is what amazes me the most: a couple of hundred people who are my age or older who came to protest the benefits which, for the most part, would serve them well and which they actually need. Thinking back to where this kind of behavior, in which ordinary citizens are convinced to work against themselves, started... the incoming of Ronald Reagan 40 years ago... I am as confused now as I was then. How do middle-class and lower-middle-class individuals justify campaigning for the things that make their own lives worse?

Before the coming of Reagan, things were paid for with taxes on income... including a substantial amount by the income of the upper classes, banks and investments were Federally regulated so that things weren't stolen from individual Americans and trade unions protected so many people... defended their lives and investments, made sure they got into colleges, etc. Then, with the progress of years, administrations and changing controls in Congresses during times of Republican domination, regulations were removed one by one until banks and insurance companies could set up investments that crewed the public in favor of gross profit margins for a very few individuals, unions were squeezed out... beginning with the air traffic controllers, 401k plans were substituted for strong and subsidized retirement plans, and slowly but surely the middle classes sank lower and lower in the overall economy.

Until we got to where we are now... the money that had been built up in Social Security was grabbed and payed out... and substituted with outrageous credit statements... by people like George W. Bush, the cost of health plans like Blue Cross... once a public service non-profit changed into a profit making Insurance company... rising faster than the amount of money people were earning until insurance costs took up 1/3 of extremely high medical bills, and our National Debt grew to unbelievable numbers leaving the current administration in a situation where, in order to eventually reduce it, it needed to be increased now in order to keep functioning until laws and regulations could be changed.

But those Insurance companies and others, represented by growing numbers of lobbyists... many former Congressfolk who had long ago realized what side of the bread was buttered... who could spend 1 and 1/3 million bucks a day to make ordinary people get scared to death of "socialism" and "federal control of their lives" and any other lie they could put out... these creatures of Reagan's previous revolution were ready to work as hard as possible to make sure the 1% OR SO OF UPPER-CLASS FOLKS kept their income and rest of us gladly gave them the opportunity.

After all, if we kept things the same, someday we would all be rich and benefit from this kind of life. We would all be in the .02% of citizens who didn't lose money on State Lotteries. We would maintain our belief in American Success.

So now, at a Town Hall meeting like the one I went to yesterday in Hagerstown, where Cardin was screamed at about a bill that hadn't even been written yet, and people believed that their grandparents were going to be put up in front of "death panels" who would notify them that the end had come, I could see the Triumph of the Right and could only hope that the Left would wise up to their majority and screw the idea of bipartisanship ( a joke which the Republicans have made their strongest moves with ), that they would start the march back to the normalcy of Government given us by FDR and Harry Truman and, yes, even Eisenhower ... who no longer seems like a Republican a all, and JFK and LBJ.

There is a slim chance that we can get there and health Care is the test. It has been the test since Truman tried to get it. It has been the test since Johnson kept the Right from killing Medicare. And it is the test today.

The question is: Will we pass?

Yesterday's coverage of Cardin Town Hall at: Under The LobsterScope

I think you're right about Reagan. He came into office right after Carter who was perceived, and painted,as a weak failure.
Reagan the American Cowboy projected strength and leadership making it easy for him to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.
Republicans have a habit of capitalizing on disasters they themselves had a big hand in creating.Reagan was no exception.

on Dylan Ratigan's show and Hardball (w/ Lawrence O'Donnell yesterday) they show themselves to be exactly that - cretins!

Ratigan 'interviewed' the older guy who was screaming in Specter's face the day before - he could barely speak in a sentence and just wanted to read his list of 'points'. He had no thoughts of his own and could not answer even simple questions about what he knew about the issues and why he was protesting.

Same thing for the woman who said, "I don't want this country turning into Russia..." Lawrence asked her simple, pertinent questions - she could only answer with TV sound bites, repeating Repug talking points. I doubt she could find Russia on a map.

Clearly, the people being bussed to these town halls have no clue - just heads filled with right-wing crap. Course, we knew that...

Why do all these screamers at the town halls seem to be older, gray-headed, overweight people? I've heard some screaming about "saddling our children and grandchildren with debt". Shit, aren't some of us still paying for past wars, screwups, etc. I'm probably still paying for the damn war I fought in.

Tell them if they're so worried about saddling the kids with debt, to stop accepting their Socialized Security checks.

Along with Medicare, Medicaid, Senior Care, etc. I know a dude who gets disability checks and bitches about all this.

Death Panels. At least that is what they fear. Of course they fail to recognize that unless they have overly beneficial Whole Life Insurance, they risk the wrath of the Cigna and Aetna Death Panels for the same reason.

I'd also add that everyone protesting at those town halls also has some form of health care. In fact, I'd bet that all of them do. I don't see any reason for those that do not have health care coverage to be this vocal and disapproving of government health care. After all, some health care coverage, even if it is government health care, is better than no coverage at all which many people are facing right now.

Also, for some its so bad not having health care at all that I have been helping some of my fellow military veterans and their dependents to consider applying for Veterans Affairs health benefits if they qualify. Its at least something which is more than they have now is what I tell them.

because most of them work for the death insurance industry

put in a wheel chair by that SIEU thug in St. Louis. He had no job, however, and was soliciting charity, furthering the stereotype his fellow teabaggers have of black people.

I said something to that effect a couple of days ago

Except the black SEIU member was the one that got injured, not Kenny

you bastard!

I know one person who went to one of these meeting (in the end she didn't get in) and was yelled at by people to GET A JOB! She couldn't figure out why they would think she didn't have one, then realized that they must assume that anyone who wants a public option must be a freeloader.

Anyone on Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security can attend a town hall meeting but they have to STFU.

Oh Odin! if there was only a cure for ignorance.
This is exactly what the insurance companies are doing now!
THEY have long had "death panels" and they are driven by the good old US "Money is god and capitalism is its religion" profit motive. Let people die so we can make more $$$.

The insurance companies have "death boards of directors" or "death boards" or my favorite so far "murder boards." Let people die so we can make more $$$.

Don't allow them to let people die so they can make more $$$.

Ask these people:
Have you ever had a claim denied? Know a friend who has?
Have you or anyone you know been denied or had coverage terminated?
Have you or anyone you know tried to pay for COBRA while unemployed? (I'm doing that now, and thank Barry, it's < $400 rather that > $1.5K.)
How many of your claims are messed up somehow so you need to go thru hoops to get paid? How often are your payouts less than you expected? Now, how often do they ever make a mistake in your favor? Never? Simple statistics says if these are random "mistakes" then 50% should be in your favor, and 50% in theirs. They are taking you money, denying you your rights and making themselves and their investors richER. Look at the profits. They come from YOU. The worse they treat you, the better they do profit-wise.

In short, how often does your current insurance hose you? Even if the gov't program was as bad, at least it would be cheaper.

Always follow the money. Does a "mistakenly" denied claim help them? Have you ever said, ah it's only $XXX, it's not worth the fight. That's why so many "mistakes" are made. But if YOU make a mistake, like a late or incorrect payment, WHAM! No mercy.

This is yet another problem that would not exist if we had true campaign finance reform. No contributions from insurance companies, no favor$ from the scum they help to elect.

Help me. I'm looking for a major problem in the US that CAN'T be blamed on special interests and their donations/purchases to/of "elected" officials. The only set of things I can think of are states' interests. And many of those are driven by special interests in the states.
If you look at the problems that are cause by special interests, then campaign refinance reform is the only way to fix it. Currently only special special interests can afford to get a candidate national exposure. And only those candidates can get elected. And, as Boss Tweed said, "I don't care who does the voting as long as I get to do the nominating."
I we can only choose from the special interests' candidates, then nothing much can be done.
I realize there are some candidates who get financing other ways. But there are so many purchased tools that they must fight that, again, our interests are rarely defended.

Human citizens over corporate citizens.

If Obama is Hitler, the Neo-Nazis should love him, right?

The only thing consistent with the right is their inconsistency.

there's that and their stupidity.

but I think we're on the same page.

Well, that just the kind of Philistine pig-ignorance I've come to expect from you non creative garbage! Not giving a tinker's cuss for the struggling artist!

Hey, Ed, it's not the fringe -- it's all the Republicans have left. The fringe is now the center.

I like many have concerns about "Universal" or "Government" Health Care. We already have a shortage of health care providers. More restrictions and guidelines will only worsen this situation and serve as a disincentive for those contemplating a health care career. Government health care is an oxymoron. I would be more willing to support it if it were truly universal. Many of those with reservations like myself would be more open to it if a resolution was passed requiring all government employees and elected officials at all levels to abandon their current plans and become participants in the new universal health plan.

The only difference between universal health care and private health care, is that you pay into a larger pool with the universal, and private health care providers deny your claim for stupid reasons, saying your procedure isn't critical to your life, or it's a pre-existing condition. Even with private health care, you still pay into a pool that others are drawing out of, and if you cancel your policy with your insurance provider, do you get your money back? Of course not, so how is it NOT already socialized. The only thing that makes it "private" is that there are several different companies to choose from. Oh, and special interests run it.

Did you also know that the USA payed $2.4 TRILLION for health care in 2008, which was 17 percent of our GDP? That comes out to $7900 per person. This site will tell you what our health care costs this nation http://www.nchc.org/facts/cost.shtml and the GDP percentage of a few other 1st world nations so you can compare the costs of our health care system to theirs. Another tidbit to go along with that, we pay more than any other 1st world nation for health care, and yet they have one form of universal health care or another. As quoted from the article "Health care spending accounted for 10.9 percent of the GDP in Switzerland, 10.7 percent in Germany, 9.7 percent in Canada and 9.5 percent in France, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development."

I bet most of you also didn't realize that a poll suggests that about 60 percent of bankruptcies in the US are caused by medical debt, according to this NY Times blog post. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/04/medi... .

So to be honest with you all, I have yet to see a single good reason as to why we shouldn't have a universal/government run health care system. There are plenty of outstanding reasons why we should though. Lower overall costs, better care for everyone, less debt due to outrageous medical bills, no more getting denied care for no reason or just stupid reasons, etc.

from these people!"

Ed, Ed.

These people ARE the Republican party.

THAT is why the "party" won't distance itself from them.

They THINK they're the base, but they're not. The CORPORATIONS are the Republican's BASE, and these are their dupes.
