From the HuffPo -- Donny Deutsch Sidelined At MSNBC Over Keith Olbermann Segment:

Donny Deutsch has been pulled from MSNBC's 3PM hour after including Keith Olbermann in a montage of angry media personalities.

Deutsch, who had been hosting an "America the Angry" segment in the hour formerly occupied by David Shuster, was informed Wednesday that his time in the anchor's chair was over.

"For whatever reason, they decided they didn't want to go with it the rest of the week," Deutsch told the New York Times.

The Times' Brian Stelter reports that "four people briefed on the decision said the cancellation stemmed from an unflattering mention" of Olbermann. Deutsch had included Olbermann in what Stelter described as "a series of clips of media bloviators during a segment that pondered what role the media plays in fomenting the public's anger." Deutsch also hosted Hugh Hewitt, who called MSNBC's Ed Schultz a "hate-monger." The segment appears below.

Read on...

Keith Olbermann denied having anything to do with the show being pulled off the air. I think this had more to do with his boss not wanting the hosts on his network attacking each other. God knows Keith's abided by it since he has not made Joe Scarborough his "Worst Person in the World" and Tucker Carlson never made the list until he left MSNBC.

What the HuffPo didn't say anything about in their article is just how really awful the show was. I didn't watch all of it, but what I did watch was just terrible even without him bringing on hate monger Hugh Hewitt to comment on other people being over the top. One of our team members shared this with everyone a bit ago. It's an open letter to MSNBC asking to get David Shuster back on the air. I hope Phil Griffin read it -- My letter to MSNBC's Phil Griffin: "David Shuster".

Olbermann isn't nearly as "angry" as the folks at Fox. If anything, he's just having fun most the time mocking their outlandishness.

Schultz on the other hand is a hate-monger. His entire show is about little more than copying the Fox News playbook but from a liberal view. Dehumanizing one's countrymen is horrible whether it comes from our side or theirs.

LeftandLeft's picture

Actually your baseless, factless, imaginary charges are a closer resemblance to Fox than anything Schultz' has ever said.

Equating Olbermann to one of the ranting sex abusers, nazi dreamers, or drug addicts, on other networks is just asinine.

I agree. Ed is not hate monger. He gets just as outraged by the b.s. the super rich and republicans are constantly pulling, than I do.

Righteous indignation must not to be treated the same way as the total b.s. and fake hysteria the GOP employs.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

I LOVE Ed Schultz.

with supposedly showing two sides of the story...
Some stories have two sides, some have four, some have only one

and Hewitt's comments were downright wrong!
No commentator on MSNBC or CNN has made any comments close to the hatefulness of Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, or tea party crowd

Bring back David Shuster ... who would not have allowed Hewitt to spin generalities but insisted on actual facts

Keith Olbermann is not causing the kind of anger that FoxNews is causing. I'm a regular viewer. You don't see his viewers strapping on guns, shooting cops, bombing federal buildings, or other violent anti-government activity. So I don't know why he would be included in the montage.

DamOTclese's picture

The reason why Deutsch stupidly included Keith Olberman was because Deutsch was trying to find someone "angry" on the progressive left to try to lend some credibility to the rightarded claim that "liberals are also angry extremists."

Deutsch couldn't find anyone so he stupidly tossed Keith Olberman in to the list and hoped it would not be pointed out to him as a completely wrong fit, Olbermen being anything but a hate-spewing extremist like all the rest are undeniably.

Deutsch probably deserved to get fired for making such a stupid mistake.

roxsteady's picture

Sadly, like Heather, I watched it and it was awful. I didn't see all of it so, I missed his lumping Keith in with those hateful bastards. That said, the show sucked. It seemed predictable and pointless.

Oh,

and Ed, Keith and Rachel are the only shows worth watching on MSNBC especially with Shuster gone right now. I love Keith and Rachel and really like big Eddie too! I never miss any of their shows!

This self professed genius and expert on everything under the sun is a fountain of bullshit who's ego knows no bounds .There is quite a difference when ones outrage is genuine , based on truth and facts as opposed to disingenuous " anger " , endless lies and absolute bullshit. In all of television , Keith , Rachael , Ed and I'll throw in John Stewart ... are just about the only sources we have for factual information and the truth and the wing nuts control 90 % of talk radio . It's bad and it's no accident ,has been getting worse and worse , the right wing / Repugs are like a growing and spreading cancer .

One of the little tricks Boss Limbaugh uses is that he constantly talks about how angry President Obama and Michelle are.

I have never seen either of them in that light, but the Fat Man knows many white people are scared to death of angry black people.

Nobody ever said he wasn't good at what he does.

DamOTclese's picture

Nobody ever said he wasn't good at what he does.

To be sure, Limbaugh doesn't have to be good at his anti-American hate spewing. His job is to manipulate Republicans, and given the typical IQ of the typical Republican, any uneducated, dope-snorting, dog-fucking fat white man like Limbaugh can handle the job.

Misery loves company and the Republicans are miserable all the time regardless. finally the majority in this country see it getting better and the Republican squealing class can't stand everyone being happy for a change.

I've often tried to watch him as a guest on other programs, he is rude, inconsiderate, an air hog, and so full of himself that he can't shut up. If I had to label myself, I'd say moderate liberal, pretty tolerant, but this Donny character doesn't have enough class to be in the same room with Keith Olbermann. At least Keith knows he's a satirist, makes jokes about himself and his collegues, but Donny has such a holier-than-thou attitude about himself and his ramblings that I just simply could not get through an entire program with him as host. But honestly, given my druthers, I agree enough with Donny's politics that I wish he would come back on MSNBC but learn to moderate his style, make the program more about others & the issues and less about himself and his ego and need for attention.

Woody McBreairty

d beck is absurd.

the RW has a monster uncontested talk radio monopoly of 1000 radio stations protected by call screeners. they are proven liars and racists who read and spin think tank lobbyist talking points all day long in coordination with each other.

the progressives can use truth but have a disadvantage - their soapbox is 1/10th the size and their base, the left, is completely ignorant of the power of the talk radio monopoly.

I think it is way past time to be holding these people accountable for their words. Hewitt an most other republicans in the last 10 years or so at times just make shit up and spit it out like it was the truth.
Yes donny deserved to go and Hewitt should not be on any other news show again. Why for being a liar!

"I was disappointed because I think I'm on to something really special here that needs to be done," Deutsch told Stelter. "It's time the purple voice is out there," he added.."

FUCK the "purple voice" Donny.
8 years of Bush and after 1 year the republicans are demanding their country back that they almost destroyed.
With the Dems firmly in power, real Liberals deserve to be heard for a change. So again.Fuck the purple voice.

Sadly, Americans want entertainment and not enlightenment. They pick the station that best suits their ideology and let it rile them up. Sadly, these stations are allowed to call themselved News stations and not Opinion stations. I wish we had news, dammit, and nothing else. I need to know what happened and no commentary. Just give me the damn news and shut the hell up. I mean that for FOX, CNN, MSNBC, and everyone else. Make a different station called Our Viewpoint, but separate it and don't skew the news with it. Sadly, Americans like Jerry Springer more than Walter Cronkite...so we will never get news, we will get this crap masquerading as news...

DamOTclese's picture

Oh man, there-in lies the rub. Thing is, the United States has never had a truthful Fifth Estate, the news media -- legitimate news, legitimate journalism -- has never been free from the constrains of corporate financial policies which drive the companies that produced the news.

American citizens have never had truth unfiltered, everything citizens has been subjected to since the founding of the country has been tailored, tainted, spun, edited, reworked, and fed to the masses in accord with the financial expectations of the people feeding them the news.

We have Indymedia and the Intertubes now of course, and now instead of truth we have stark bifurcations of what happened at incidents which are, if possible, even more unreconcileable.

Hugh Hewitt did a great job of making DD's point valid and did an even better job embarrasing himself on national TV.

SassySandy's picture

Anyone stupid enough to have Hugh Hewitt on their show deserves exactly what they get. I believe CNN learned their lesson about Hewitt some time ago. I am thinking it was on Wolf Blitzers' show.

DamOTclese's picture

That's another thing. Why didn't Deutsch clear the segment with his superiors? Why was he allowed to mistakenly add Keith Olbermen in with hate extremists?

Isn't anyone awake at CNN and keeping an eye on things? Surely they must have at least one adult in charge over there.

oh really's picture

...crap TV. Left, Right? Who cares. It's all garbage and a waste of time. That said, I did watch the clip (a waste of time) and I certainly didn't see anything that would justify pulling the show.

The idea that Olbermann and Schultz are "the biggest hatemongers" in the media is absurd, almost as absurd as claiming that Dennis Prager and Hugh Hewitt deserve respect or credibility. Hugh Hewitt is a hack.

We'd all be better off if the 24-hr a day "news" channels simply ceased to exist. There isn't enough news (that anyone is willing to cover) to justify their being on the air 24 hours a day and what they fill the time with is mostly trash. The exceptions aren't good enough to justify saving everything just to avoid getting rid of something worthwhile. Of course, this crap is not going to disappear and this country is going to continue its long slide into the abyss of ignorance and stupidity. I feel sorry for anyone younger than 45 today.

I don't think Keith Olbermann is in the same league with the likes of Beck and Hannity, but neither is he worth spending any time defending. It is true that over the years he's had a handful of commentaries that contained opinions that needed to be aired, but for better or worse, Olbermann isn't the person to deliver them -- he doesn't have the intellectual heft necessary to pull it off.

In these days when everything is entertainment, a sports announcer can morph into a news commmentator, but the mere fact of change doesn't give the person any credibility. At one point, Olbermann was giving so many "special" commentaries that calling them special became a joke -- as he, himself, noted.

Unfortunately, if Olbermann and Schultz disappeared the Right would simply shift their attacks to someone else.

It used to be that people like Olbermann and Maddow (Rachel is probably the best of the bunch) would appear as guests to voice opinions. Now, they have their own shows. I think they exist to counter Fox News, but I don't think their impact is positive. Because of the way the media are structured today, I don't know if there is any way for the Left to respond to Fox in a meaningful way. It makes me think of a Little League baseball game in which Right Wing parents riot. I'm not sure how the situation is improved by having Left Wing parents join the melee.

There is no equivilent to the Republican organization.

truth2power's picture

No one would expect you to watch anything but FAUX, which continually LIES & makes up things.

MSNBC is the best, including Keith, Rachel, Ed, and David Shuster.

...oh, what's the point?

A right wing propagandist?

The stupidity and incorrectness of what you've written is truly astounding. First, I have never -- and I mean NEVER; not once -- watched Fox News. I have seen isolated clips here and elsewhere, but I have never tuned in to Fox or gone to its website. Occasionally, I've been in a laundromat where the TV is superglued to Fox News and I've either turned it off or ignored it completely. When the country went digital last year, I didn't bother, since I don't watch television and I've never had cable. I have also never watched any show on MSNBC. All I've ever seen of any cable news program has been in clips posted here and on other Internet sites. (I've never had cable.) And from what I've seen, none of these programs are worth watching. Increasingly, my friends (and sister) who do have cable are throwing in the towel and turning all cable news programs off.

I'm glad you like MSNBC. I'm pretty sure you could find an infinite number of better ways to spend your time (and be better informed), but you're free to watch what you want. I've never been able to understand lefty friends of mine, none of whom are Republicans, but all of whom are to the right of me, who watch Fox or listen to Limbaugh for "entertainment." To me, there's nothing entertaining about listening to clowns make stuff up. On the other hand, I don't need to know what Olberman, Matthews (the creepiest so-called lefty to ever grace the airwaves), or anyone else at MSNBC thinks in order to form an opinion. There are countless websites with more intelligent commentary than anything I've ever seen in an MSNBC clip. (Maddow is the one exception. I have no interest in watching her, but I could imagine a blog by her being worthwhile.) I prefer news that can help me form my own opinions, and cable news is not, in my estimation, the best place to get that news. Given the endless amount of criticism of cable news from all points on the spectrum, I don't think I have to re-argue the case against cable news.

Sigh, I've now been branded a "right wing propagandist" by truth2power -- what an inspirational user name -- which just goes to show that posting a comment on C&L does not require a functioning brain or any evidence for what one writes. Making the leap that you made -- from my saying watching Olberman, et al. is a waste of time, to my being a right wing propagandist is so stupid, so utterly devoid of rational thought that I stand in awe of you.

You say Keith, Rachel, and David Shuster are the best, but surely you've inadvertently omitted mention of your intellectual twin...Mika!

You have no way of knowing it, but calling me (with my record) a right wing propagandist may well be the dumbest thing you've ever written or said -- and I'm sure there is some really stiff competition.

You should grow up and stop assuming that anyone who voices an opinion that doesn't conform precisely with your narrow world view is somehow a Winger. In doing so, you act more like a Winger than the heroic "truth2power" person you seem to think you are. Based on your criticism of me, I'd guess "stupidity2power" would be closer to the truth.

I have many criticisms of Barack Obama, but every one of them (mostly dealing with his record on human rights, assassination, etc.) is a criticism from the LEFT. I didn't like his health care reform bill because I don't believe it has any way of solving our health care system's problems. Keeping private for-profit insurance companies involved is absurd, since they are all so corrupt they will never voluntarily contribute to a high quality, cost-effective system. To me, the right wing propagandist, a single payer universal system is the only one that has any chance of solving our problems. Of course, I could only come to that conclusion by being a Fox News addict and right wing propagandist.

Just as I've concluded that cable news is not worth much of my time, neither, I dare say, is arguing with you. It is people like you -- supposedly liberal or progressive -- but mostly just simple-minded, who make me truly despair for the future. Have a nice life.

Deutsch is still wallowing in false equivalencies while the country has moved on. The Republican is a national hazard.

WTF? Everything that Olberman has said, everything that he has reported has been 100% accurate -- demonstrably so!

MSNBC pulled this guy because he stupidly enumerated an actual MSNBC journalist in with the right wing domestic terrorist simpathizing loons.

...has said is "100% accurate." Since the only Olberman I've ever seen is the occasional clip that appears on C&L (or some other site), I can't comment about the entirety of Olberman's output. (I'd argue for caution since being 100% accurate is unlikely for anyone.)

On the other hand, what I have seen of Olberman, I've generally agreed with. I think it's unfortunate that he is routinely singled out as the Left's equivalent of Beck or Limbaugh, because there is no similarity. And as far as I can tell, the left doesn't have anyone equivalent to the prominent Wingers. I think Olberman's problem may be, in part, that his background doesn't confer any credibility on him, which is ironic since Wingers don't need any credentials at all, yet no one seems to notice that Beck is just some over- or undermedicated psychotic CLOWN with the intellect of a returnable glass bottle. Undoubtedly, Olberman would fare better if he had an audience as large as Becks, since ratings are far more important in today's US than content or quality. I don't think lefties, generally, are looking for a constant diet of opinion as news, so I would never expect Olberman to challenge Beck (or any other big time Winger). At least none of my lefty friends are interested in sitting through Olberman, Maddow, or any of the other supposed cable news lefties.

that I see with this is that it's going to pressure KO into being more reserved and less willing to speak the truth. I mean, I can't say that's an entirely bad thing (as he has gone over the top a few times), but his voice and persona is quite important to the left and if he is always busy worrying about how idiots like Donny Douchebag and Joe Scarborough think about him, well... it's a big loss.

My definition of an idiot is anyone who "believes" republicans represent the average citizen. So many so-called informed people that consistently vote against their own interest are also idiots, mainly again poor republicans. The "majority" of these idiots vote on a single issue, abortion, taxes, stupidity what have you. Stupid is as stupid votes and if it could be traded on wall street, which it apparently is, the bankers bank billions on stupid people and get their votes as well. Oh well I guess. Peace
