On The O'Reilly factor Dick Morris is asked how the United States should deal with the North Korean's latest aggressive actions and his solution is...get the Japanese to threaten to change their constitution and develop a nuclear weapon themselves.
So of course like any good neocon, Morris' solution to our problems with North Korea is nuclear escalation and promoting an arms race.

Seriously, they do have one. It's called the Japan Self-Defense Force. For a while they were forbidden by Japanese law from being deployed overseas but have recently taken part in UN peace-keeping efforts and also in Iqaq.

If Japan were to develop nuclear weapons, we would end up with an arms-race between China and Japan, and maybe between South Korea and Japan. Asia hasn't forgotten Japanese aggression in the first half of the 20th Century. This idea is as idiotic as muc of what comes out of North Korea.

Korea is still angry with Japan for kidnapping about 100,000 women and using them for sex slaves during their Imperial wars last century. Tough to heal that sort of thing and involving nukes probably messes it up even further.
Not to mention, Korea was a colony of Japan from 1905 (officially 1910) to 1945. They tried to obliterate Korean culture and language. Koreans all had to take Japanese names, and they had to speak Japanese too. They burned down their palaces and historical sites, used slave labour, and ran torture camps. Then when the war came, they abducted 100,000 women for Japanese military brothels overseas.
Koreans have no love for the Japanese! These days they are co-operationg and moving forward, but the memories are etched in stone. An arms race would not be useful, or desired. The whole idea is so America-centric, and out-of-touch with your allies here. That's the problem. It is often America's problem; living in a bubble.

My take on the Korea deal, notwithstanding Toes Morris' take, is that we should just hand this thing off to Russia and China. If this threat is credible I cannot imagine that either of these two countries would be happy with North Korea. I don't think NK is stable enough for Russia and China to think that they could not potential targets for the Dear Leader. Just tell Russia and China that this is their baby. We have our own problems.

The majority of the citizenry of Japan doesn't even want their own military. They are very happy with the arrangement they have with America (the best defense money can buy). Joining the SDF (Self Defense Force) in Japan is not considered an overly "honorable" profession in Japan.

I'm not saying Dick knows anything about Japanese culture, I wouldn't know. (The ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which is actually quite conservative and, often, quite nativistic, is quite comfy with the Republican Party – so comfortable, they famously and idiotically cut off just about all contact with Democrats in congress during the Bush 2 years.) He may indeed have some Japanese contacts, and my guess would be that they are of a more conservative nature than the general populace. (Think Iraq, Bush and Chalabi – actually, I'm not absolutely sure that is a 100% correct analogy, but this is being written on the fly.)
However, the Japanese citizenry is in flux on the issue of greater military involvement. In fact some polls have recently shown that a majority of Japanese are in favor of changing the Japanese Constitution's Article 9, which was written by Americans after the war and was used to, first, ban and now, still greatly limit Japanese military activities.
The fly in the ointment is North Korea. Because the USA has, to date, not taken a harder line with NK, there has been talk of revising the defense pact between my home country and my adopted one. China and what many Japanese consider Chinese military aggression throughout the region also enters into the mix, and talk of developing nukes in the only country ever to suffer their affects is not unknown and has increased due to current concerns.
It is a complicated issue, one which FOX in particular is ill-suited to cover and one which I do not have the time nor expertise to cover fully myself. I will add that while more people may be inclined to support a greater military role for the country, there is still much less support for the idea of developing a nuclear arsenal. (By the way, my understanding is that the technology thneeded is already developed and there are enough materials on hand to develop actual weapons in a short matter of time should the Japanese choose to do so.)
President Obama should be paying more attention to Japan. Sec. of State Clinton has been trying to reassure everyone, but the recent nomination of John V. Roos as Ambassador to Japan. Roos is seen primarily as a businessman and unfamiliar with defense issues so I think many Japanese are uneasy.

Maybe Morris is just bluffing. The last thing China wants is a nuclear Japan so maybe that prospect will motivated the Chinese to lower the boom on North Korea once and for all. When we are in a cold war mindset, the logic is that everyone having nukes is the best way to keep nukes from being used. When even the most evil enemy is staring total destruction in the face, they back down.
Today, though, things are a little more complicated. If some subversive group gets hold of some loose nuke, sneaks it into a country and sets it off, you have nobody to retaliate against. That's a pretty serious concern even if we all disarm because there will always be a nuke, or the capacity to make one, somewhere.
We've been here before.

My wife is Japanese and we have a son in 6th grade. My father-in-law was a Kami -Kazi pilot in WW II. He wanted to die that way, but the rule was that planes having functional trouble have to turn around and go back.
My son's school class/ grade took a very long trip to the Nuclear Bomb (results) Museum in Hiroshima. I think practically all the Elementary school kids in this country make the trip at least once.
I've been here 14 years. There is crime and arguments in this country but I never see it. All I see every day is the most polite people on earth, I think. They do whatever is necessary to avoid confict.....including (get this.....drum roll please ) COMMUNICATION !!!... until issues resolve amicably !

As a naval military officer and student at the Army's Command and General Staff College, I do not believe the answer to North Korea is Japan's development of their own nuclear weapons program. Deterring nuclear weapons with nuclear weapons is not a good idea and should never be the solution...even though this was the basis of the Cold War. I understand that the Obama administration needs to take a stand and cannot afford to do nothing. The answer lies in pressing China to deal with North Korea. Only with China's assistance can sanctions against North Korea be effective.
Hopefully, we do not allow Dick Morris to get anywhere President Obama with his silly ideas.
