David Brooks excuses Liz Cheney and his "friend" Bill Kristol's fear mongering ad by saying we've been too mean to Dick Cheney. Instead of actually addressing how corrosive their attacks have been, Brooks tries to write it off as politics as usual. Sorry David, but it's not politics as usual unless you think the sort of rhetoric used by McCarthy should be considered part of our civil discourse now.

Transcript via PBS.

JIM LEHRER: Let's go to another disagreement...

JIM LEHRER: ... the so-called al-Qaida seven. Liz Cheney and her group have criticized some Justice Department lawyers because they once represented some Guantanamo detainees.

Where do you come down on that?

DAVID BROOKS: Well, I think the ad, which sort of accused whose values do they have, do they have al-Qaida or Taliban values, I thought that was tremendously unfortunate.

I mean, it's just part of a long range of corrosive language. And, to be fair to Liz Cheney, if you Google Taliban and Liz Cheney, millions of people have called her a member of the Taliban and made similar charges. But it's a series of steps away from the, you know, normal way any of us should be talking to each other.

MARK SHIELDS: The idea of the al-Qaida seven, I mean, there are those of us who are old enough to remember the Chicago Seven, when incitement to riot and the seven protesters, militants, whatever you want to call them, disrupted as a matter of course, and it became a famous court case at the time and trial.

I just thought it was more than unfortunate. I thought it was offensive. And I thought it was, frankly, un-American, in the true sense of the word.

JIM LEHRER: Un-American?

MARK SHIELDS: Un-American in the true sense of the word. I mean, that -- we -- that is a great American tradition.

Lindsey Graham, the Republican senator from South Carolina, defended it very well. He said: I owe it to my country and to the legal system in my country to be sure that everybody gets a good defense, the best defense possible.

JIM LEHRER: David, in fact, a lot of the hot words about this whole dispute has been among conservatives, between conservatives.

DAVID BROOKS: Right.

JIM LEHRER: How do you read that?

DAVID BROOKS: Well, I mean, a lot of people who like Liz Cheney and my friend Bill Kristol, who was also involved, thought this was a step over the line.

And they were -- they agreed with them on the principle of the thing or on the substance, which is that they thought discussion should take place in a certain respectable venue, showing respect, and that this ad stepped over the line. So, there has been a fair bit of criticism from fellow conservatives toward this.

But, again, I would say, if you look at the words that were hurled at Dick Cheney, who I am no fan of, but, believe me, he has been the subject of calumnies worse. And maybe that was part of the emotional...

MARK SHIELDS: And these were people -- these were people who were practicing their profession as lawyers. They weren't candidates for high national office.

I mean, when somebody does run for high national office, they come to expect this. When somebody volunteers his or her time in the fulfillment of what is the American constitutional dream, to be upbraided and attacked in a paid television advertising, to me, is unforgivable.

DAVID BROOKS: Well, if are you calling people evil, and members of the Taliban, or members of al-Qaida, or members of evil conspiracies, that is the corrosive factor here, who -- regardless of who you are talking to, which public servant you are talking to. There's ways to talk and there's ways not to talk.

JIM LEHRER: I have bad news. I was about to ask you about the Eric Massa case, but we're out of time.

Thank you both very much.

The Dick EARNED the nasty names he got called. Everyone of them. Now to say it's ok for The Dick and li'l dick to use lies to mount an attack because they were called names--well someone should grab up your press credentials. You bring extra shame to a struggling profession. I think giving bjs in back alleys and darkened doorways for $5 apiece has more honour and honesty to it than what you and people like you do, David Brooks.

What a gobshite.

...and all you get is what she says about the attorneys. There is nothing relating to her or her father being associated.

Brooks is full of shit...as usual.

"L'l Dick" is the perfect name for Liz.

"...if you Google Taliban and Liz Cheney, millions of people have called her a member of the Taliban and made similar charges.."

What a bare-faced stinkin' lie.

God, I wish someone would shove a pie into Brooks stupidly complacent face, and Liz and Dick's faces, too. Preferably a pie made of pig-shit.

dick was a vice president, to all intents and purposes an acting president, setting up a torture regime in violation of our National traditions, American, military and civilian and international jurisprudence.

The DOJ are faceless cogs not seeking the limelight, but trying to maintain the American tradition that everyone gets some kind of defense.

I watched it last night and all I could think of was False Equivalencies.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

False equivalences indeed

I've gotten this sort of argument thrown at me when talking about the inflamatory rhetoric spewn by Cheney, Beck, and their ilk. "But the liberals said bad things too. Just Google it."

Of course, none of us have radio shows, TV shows, book deals, and audiences of millions. But all of us no-names on the internets who criticzed conservatives are the equivilent. And for this reason, the wingnuts can say whatever they want.

Wow. Never knew I was so important.

david brooks is a sucker. a fool. a stool pigeon. the rightwing thinks moderates like brooks are limp-wristed, ideologically tainted, pussies. but, that doesn't stop brooks from rushing to their defense.

but, i digress. the difference between calling dick cheney and his band of war criminals mean names and the 'al qaeda 7' ad is that liz 'mini dick' cheney and bill kristol are not really insulting the lawyers. it is not a tit-for-tat name calling session.

no, their corporo-graphic messaging has a deeper and dangerous intent--an assault on the rule of law. this is not about the DoJ lawyers, this is about creating a fauxgrass movement that attempts to cut-off a subset of accused criminals (those deemed islamic terrorists) from the legal system.

It's also providing cover if any charges are ever filed against the previous administration for war crimes.

no... just a unfortunate word-grouping. ideological incest, maybe. but dick is asexual. liz started life as a bud on dick's jowl.

and all the other things you called him, but above everything else he is a overpaid liar.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness. They have killed the economy and ruined the lives of millions of people.

are threatening the DOJ lawyers, making a clear effort to have them fired, or perhaps assassinated by a teabagger goon. Terror and murder are the goals of Dick & Co., along with Fox.

The old "they did it too" thing is rather childish. Even if it were true, that doesn't excuse the action.

Brooks just doesn't get that Dick Cheney proudly struts and admits to making sure that waterboarding and other forms of torture were committed by the US and our allies. Waterboarding is legally considered torture in nearly every modern industrialized country in the world including the USA. We prosecuted Japanese after WWII for torture by waterboarding. We get to call Dick Cheney an admitted war criminal and compare him to fascists as that is the truth! That is not name calling. That is a fact. Doesn't even require a trial as he or his daughter brags about illegal behavior on the news almost daily. He dares the DOJ to charge him as he knows this administration utterly lacks the nads to do it's job. He attacks the denutted DOJ without any fear because he knows he will never be held to account thus his complete lack of respect for the DOJ. Big difference between all that and accusing lawyers doing their required and sworn professional duty of being AQ sympathizers. Such an attitude if held widely would end our legal system as it has stood since John Adams defended the Brit soldiers from the Boston Massacre.

So he's saying that the insinuation is correct it's just the way it was said or worded is what is unfortunate? Straddle that line often, Mr. Brooks?

A very serious person having a very serious discussion about childish things. It's time to wean David Fu(king Brooks from the corporate welfare teat.

We watched this live last night during dinner. This just floored me:

DAVID BROOKS: I mean, one of the crises we have in this country, the 9,000 crises, is a crisis of authority, of institutions, of faith in institutions. And the way we build up the faith is, publicly and in a communal fashion, show deference to the wisdom of those institutions.

Can one get any more clueless than BoBo is?

Liz and her ilk must also believe that military officers (lawyers) who defended the detainees must be traitors as well.

There should be a law that requires this to be played while Brooks is blathering in front of a camera.

C'mon, producers of PBS NewsHour- ya know ya wanna do it...Do it.

Yes I would agree that Liberals Called Dick Cheney Mean Names Too, except Dick Cheney wasn't trying to uphold the rule of law in America when we were calling him all those awful names.

He was actually trying to destroy the rule of law at the time. - Do you see the difference dumb ass right wingers?

This guy makes you want to accept him as a principled man who has a point of view but on several occasions now he has shown his true colors. This phony back-stabber is on the side of the revolutionary extremist right-winger who wants to take the country down and instill their own authoritarian fascist society in its place. At least I have to conclude this to side with the Liz and Dick Cheney.

David Brooks is nothing but a sociopathic media whore! Burn in Hell Brooks you miserable weasel bastard.

David Brooks, That is the most Republican thing i've ever heard. Asinine, childish, petty, non-sequitur... The list goes on!

What are you on?

I'm with Liz on this one. Anyone who defends her father is also a war criminal.

"Liberals Called Dick Cheney Mean Names Too"? That's because Cheney is evil incarnate. R's and independents also called him mean names.

Let's face it. If you're in politics, that means that there will always be someone, somewhere, who thinks you are an incompetent, extremist f*wad, and will call you names. Every president since the Republican George Washington campaigned for his successor President Jesus Christ (R) has been called names. In many people's minds they are deserved.

Cheney is still evil, though.

I'll never forget the time a couple of years ago, Brooks being set straight by of all people, Bob Woodard. It was on CNN, and Brooks emphatically stated that, if the U.S. left Iraq, 10k people a month would lose their lives. Word told him how ridiculous that was, and where how did he come up with that number. Once and for all that told me that Brooks was not immune to spreading pure right-wing slime.

I just Googled "Taliban and Liz Cheney" and couldn't find any reference to anyone calling her "a member of the Taliban" or anyone making "similar charges." Another Brook's lie the media didn't challenge.

David seems to have missed the point... HE and LIZZY SHARE like, personal attributes: Irrelevant, corrosive and out of ANY stream. Now, just go away.

One must remember the American Racist Nazi party is as usual in misinformation and twisted truth mode.

For some reason this Spineless, Gutless and COWARDLY White Trailer Trash think they are immuned to accountability. This piece TRAITOR Trash known as cheney should be hunted down and killed on the spot for the Betrayal of this country and his WHORE Daughter is no better.

Look this Racist Nazi Publicist is trying to to work hand in hand with the rest of the republiCANT Nazi, Racist White Supremacist in Congress, the PAST voting record is there, the comment to newspapers and TV and Radio are there yet the COWARDLY entertainment media lacks the intestinal fortitude to call this Scum Bag on his lies which tells me the CLOWNS called media CAN NOT be trusted.

The viciousness of the Right is beyond compare , there has never been anything like it in this country , not in my lifetime at least .Hey Brooks , put your tutu on and go practice your pirouette or something , you are an absolute waste of print and air wave .

The Republicans named themselves the Taliban. I believe it was Sessions who make a public statement that the Republicans would use Taliban tactics against their fellow Americans. And other repeated that.
The Republicans named themselves the RepoCons.
So if I call the Republicans RepoTaliban, that is a name they gave themselves. They choses those words.

They also chose to support McCarthy,so if I now state to refer to them as NeoMcCarthyits, those are names they chose for themselves.
They embraced the Burchers, so if they are called the tribe of Burchistan, those are names they chose themselves.

There is a reason Rethugs call Liberals names. They're hateful and they don't have any policies to offer to alleviate any problems in society. They're plunderers and liars.

The reason Liberals call Rethugs names?

The shoe really does fit.
