My, my, isn't this special? The St. Louis tea bagger Dana Loesch has now made her way from Fox News to CNN. John Roberts asks if the tone of the rhetoric at the town halls is getting dangerous. Ron Reagan Jr. replies that it has, and points out that a gun was dropped out of one of the participant's pockets at an Arizona town hall meeting. Dana Loesch defends it by saying that maybe they have a concealed-carry license. Oh...I see Dana. That license makes what happened alright in your right wing nutter world.
Would you still be defending that person being that irresponsible if that was a loaded gun, and it went off when they dropped it?
I've got a friend who is my accountant, and who has a conceal/carry license. When getting my taxes done a little while back she went on endlessly about all the classes and hoops she had to jump through with learning about gun safety to get her license. She was actually pretty proud of how she did and how she already knew how to safely handle a gun, since all of her family are hunters and they taught her from a young age a lot of the things she was required to know in those classes.
I have not read up on what the laws are to be allowed to retain a license to carry a concealed weapon since I have no desire to do so myself. If there is not something written into any states' laws already that says if you drop a loaded gun in a crowd of people and they can prove you did it, and you don't lose your right to carry a concealed weapon, then there's something wrong with our concealed/carry laws.
Anyone who has been through the program you have to go through to get that license would know better than to allow a gun to be unsecured in a manner where it's allowed to just fall out of wherever you're holding it and hit the ground. Ms. Loesch's argument that maybe this person had a permit looks ridiculous to me for that reason alone. The opposite is true of responsible gun owners who go through the safety program for that license, and the likelihood of someone who had the license allowing something that irresponsible to happen.
Of course Loesch has no idea whether they had a license or not. She just threw that out there from the land of her butt to defend them bringing a gun there in the first place. And the big, thuggish union guys at the St. Louis meeting she went to scared her, so maybe she would have been better off having a gun there herself as well. Just who would you have shot Dana had you had that gun you're saying would have protected you? Somehow you managed to make it out of there alive and onto our TV screens without pulling a gun on anyone yourself. Ron Reagan thankfully added a bit of sanity to this segment when he wasn't being talked over.
Full transcript below the fold.
ROBERTS: He wants everyone to calm down just a little bit. But, as you have been seeing tonight and all last week, at the moment, it is a very potent mix out there.
Here to talk strategy from the left and the right, Ron Reagan of Air America and Dana -- Dana Loesch, also a radio show host, and affiliated with the Saint Louis Tea Party Coalition.
Dana, let's start with you.
Why so much anger, mistrust and misinformation out there? And we wonder, has this whole thing devolved to the point where it is not only unproductive, but, frankly, it could be potentially dangerous?
DANA LOESCH, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: I don't think it could be dangerous.
I think Congress is responsible for setting the tone. And what we have seen is that Congress hasn't really allowed for discourse of one of the most important pieces of legislation in American history. And I think that is what people are reacting to.
You know, they're -- they are tired of calling their legislator and leaving a message with an aide. They're tired of going to a Web site and filling out a form e-mail. So, we are seeing at these town halls are people who -- they are flocking there because they have their elected official's ear, and they want to express their concerns about the health care legislation.
ROBERTS: So -- so, Ron, what about this argument, then, that these -- these people, they're not organized, it's a grassroots movement, these are -- these are merely Americans who want to get involved in the process, and they're deeply concerned about health care because it affects each and every one of us so much?
RON REAGAN, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: Well, it's fine to get involved, and -- and it is good to show up at a town hall meeting and -- and have a conversation. But you have to have the conversation and you have to have the discussion.
And many of these people -- not all, I'm sure, but many of these people are clearly showing up to shut the conversation down. And they are being inspired by -- by some members of Congress who are floating this rumor, as -- as certain talk show hosts do, that, you know, Obama is all -- is all about killing the elderly, and, you know, there are these death panels, as Sarah Palin put it on her Facebook page.
(LAUGHTER)
REAGAN: And I -- I don't know that it's going to get dangerous out there. I tend to think that a lot of these might calm down a little because they realize this is not good press for them.
LOESCH: Well, yes.
REAGAN: But let me just add that, in Arizona today, a gun dropped out of one of these people's pockets while they were hooting and hollering at one of these town hall meetings.
LOESCH: Maybe they had a concealed-carry license.
ROBERTS: Yes.
(CROSSTALK)
REAGAN: Well, maybe they did, but, you know, you have got to wonder whether you really need to be packing heat to go to a town hall meeting.
LOESCH: Well, you know what? I tell you here, at Russ Carnahan's town hall meeting, as a -- as a young woman looking back at a bunch of really big guys in SEIU shirts who were glaring at me, I was a little bit afraid, I have to tell you. And that's stuff that we're facing.
REAGAN: Really -- really thinking you were going to be coming to harm, Dana?
LOESCH: Well, I...
(CROSSTALK)
REAGAN: I don't think so.
(CROSSTALK)
LOESCH: ... was beaten down in the parking lot afterwards, so, you know?
REAGAN: Well, you know, it is only a matter of time before somebody pulls out a gun and does something with it.
(CROSSTALK)
ROBERTS: Well, I don't know.
(CROSSTALK)
LOESCH: Yes, but the...
ROBERTS: Yes, it could be that this person did have a concealed- carry license.
(CROSSTALK)
REAGAN: I'm not arguing with you that they didn't have the concealed-carry license.
(CROSSTALK)
LOESCH: You can't immediately assign a negative -- you can't immediately assign...
(CROSSTALK)
REAGAN: But that's not the point.
(CROSSTALK)
LOESCH: ... negative simply because they -- they may have had a concealed-carry license.
But you know what? It is interesting that the guy didn't pick up his gun and start shooting everybody with it.
REAGAN: Well, let's hope not.

I am also tired of my representatives having a person to send robot email back in response to my questions , complains and comments.. You can tell the comment or complain was not read entirely with the stupid answer I would receive....
Obama's White house no longer answers the phone... It has been busy for over 4 months now..
That is one problem I never had with white house when Bush was in office.. The only problem was telling them that I did not want they comments , I was calling to get them mine...
Hate to say this but the progressive , left or what ever you wish to call these democrats have loss any control over legislation which the democrat's pass

Arizona has very liberal gun laws. As I understand it you can carry a gun on your belt without a permit at all. They even passed a law recently that you can have a gun in bars. . . lol. . I live in cowboy town. . . what can I say. . .
To keep a gun in your pocket, however, you most definitely need a permit and that DOES require more safety hoops and testing.
Pro gun or not. . though. . I and most gun friendly people I know in Phoenix would certainly agree with the objection here. Even if you had a permit, this was gross negligence and it is inexcusable. . and probably illegal here even with our liberal attitude toward firearms. It was probably done on purpose with someone's old piece of crap gun just to intimidate people. That, too, would be inexcusable. . . and illegal.
she and great grandpa owned, because she wanted to break up the card game he was losing at (He always lost) over in their saloon. I'm sure it was a rifle of some sort, and she didn't even have to leave her hotel room.
Since she didn't get arrested, I'd say that was probably the most liberal of guns laws (none) I ever heard of.
me-oww!
the fact is, it dropped out of his friggin pocket. If this person had a permit to carry, he got it off the internet or some dead dude on the losing end of a gunfight. It was, clearly, not properly holstered.
HE is the argument in favor of proper gun laws.

There may be laws, rules or regulations that tell people not to bring firearms into a government building or in situations such as these.
I don't think the person has a license to carry a concealed weapon. Most of the people I know that have such license and weapon have them in holster of sort, even if it's in a purse.

Speaking from experience (I work in a federal building) firearms are not allowed in federal buildings even if you have a concealed carry permit.
The building is required to post this regulation, so "I didn't know" is no excuse.
Was this guy arrested? And if not, Why?
I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so.....
I don't know if the building in which the meeting was held was a federal building or not. Local/county/state buildings may have different regualtions than federal ones.
The guy brought a weapon to a public meeting being hosted by an elected federal official. I would think that would get the attention of the FBI.

Anyone who knows the first thing about guns knows you don't carry them in your pocket. It's one of the dumbest thing your can possibly do with a gun. That's how nuts get shot off. This was not someone who took the necessary classes and safety courses to obtain a concealed carry permit because they would have known better.
As someone who took the necessary classes for my concealed-handgun permit, I can say this is true. Also, you NEVER load a gun only if you are sure you will be using it - but that's a rule us gun owners are familiar with and if this person was dumb enough to drop a gun in a townhall, they may not have been aware of this.
Oh pleeease. Is it not obvious why some right wing nut would carry his pistol in his pants.

He was demonstrating responsible gun ownership, Dana Loesch? By dropping his gun and leaving it behind, that's responsible gun ownership because the gun didn't go off? That's like me leaving my kid behind and saying I'm still a good parent because the kid didn't kick anybody in the shins.
impression that simply because they say so, it makes it so.
It is part of their plausible deniability gone wild. Like the people who say they are not racist, right before they go off spouting all sorts of racist diatribe. And when they are called on it, they get annoyed because they assumed that their initial "disclaimer" was enough to absolve them of any possible criticism.
I think it is a phenomenon that derives from the extreme mental laziness and sense of entitlement from some people. As in: why would they have to spend all that time and effort to earn respect and the benefit of the doubt, when they can just claim it verbally and be done with it.

Oh and I don't think it's "responsible" gun toting when you drop your "concealed" weapon in a hostile crowd. Smart analysis.

I am also a liberal.
I do not like guns.
However, I do not wish to take away the "rights" people have to own a gun.
I also would like to say the folowing:
I know a person whose mentally insane brother killed himself with a gun, taken from his father's legally owned gun locked in a case. He somehow found the gun in the case, loaded bullets, and shot himself to death.
I also have a cousin whose father shot himself with a gun. He was an avid hunter. He seemed like a "normal" person. He shot himself and died. My cousin seems like a normal person who has 3 very young children. I do not deny their right to hunt for their sustenance. but I worry about the fact that their father, a hunter, shot himself.
All I am saying is that these gun nuts are just that..."nuts."
There is something in this US culture that promotes guns, and I do not like it.
"I think its pleasantly surprising he didn't pick up his gun and start shooting a bunch of people."
Shoot. That's what I usually do with my gun after I drop it. Kind of out of embarrassment.

A responsible gun owner would never lose their weapon.
A responsible gun owner (with a concealed carry permit) would never unholster their weapon. They would never allow that to happen.
So the argument that this person is a responsible gun owner is ludicrous. It doesn't hold water.
This was no responsible gun owner.period.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
Her exact quote was "I think its interesting he did not pick up his gun and start shooting people. That shows he is a responsible gun owner."

you could tell she was a beginner at this huh.
She started to go into some diatribe about proving a negative, channeling Don Rumsfeld, trying to talk over people's heads to sound smart even though what she was saying was a non-sequitor.
It's likely he left it because he wasn't supposed to have it in the first place, and if he stoops down and comes up with a gun in his hand, he's going to cause a panic, everyone around him will scatter, and he'll get shot by the police.
I'd think a responsible gun owner would discreetly place their foot atop the gun and remain there until they could safely retrieve it, asking another person to bring a security guard or police officer over if needed, and cooperating fully with such authorities, to establish his credentials/licensing.
Abandoning a loaded firearm in a public space is just an invitation for a lawsuit.
... is 'Why is there a need for someone to carry a gun to a town hall meeting in the first place?'
Beyond that, there are any number of holsters designed to allow you to carry a firearm, concealed or otherwise. Carrying it loose in your pocket, such that it fell out and you a) either didn't notice it, in which case you're an irresponsible twit who shouldn't have a concealed-carry permit, let alone a firearm ... b) you didn't have a permit, you're well aware you shouldn't have had a gun, and if you go groping on the floor for your Glock, you're going to get drilled by the cops ... or c) you brought your gun, intended to use it, but your tactical experience is limited to reruns of Walker: Texas Ranger and a worn-out VHS cassette of Red Dawn.
This is just the beginning. Expect more. Hopefully not worse.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
someone just brought and left the gun to up the ante >> the FEAR ante??!!

Its when some nut uses a gun at a protest, that will be a problem, both for anybody shot and the gun owner (from the cops).
So its time for Reps. and anybody else holding town hall meetings to demand protection/observation from the local PD. Thats their job to protect and serve, esp when its lawful political meetings. Some of the cops are going to hate it, they will be protecting the object of the teabaggers/brownshirts fury.
If the man with the gun and holding the sign that refers to watering the tree of Liberty (with the blood of patriots)... does that mean Obama is a true patriot if someone tries to harm him?
Does that mean the man has to shoot himself or will he have to shoot his fellow protesters?
I just love how shallow, selfish and ignorant these people put themselves upon display for me sole amusement.

The whole exchange about whether the guy had a concealed weapons license was essentially an Argumentum ad Ignoratio, so it has no bearing on whether or not it's trying to prove a negative, when there's no way to prove either way in the first place. It was all speculative. At best all they could achieve was an Ignoratio Elenchi, since as another commenter said already, it was non sequiturious.

Supposedly a gun can fire upon being dropped, as long as the safety is off.
That's how the LA police explained George Reeves "suicide." The bullet hole in the wall was when the already dead Reeves fell to the ground with the first bullet, his gun struck the floor and went off a second time.
What they couldn't explain was why they could never find the gun.

The guy that shot up the women at the health club was approved for conceal carry because he answered "NO" when asked if he had been involuntarily committed for mental health reasons. So, see, having to answer questions on a form really makes us all safe from any whacko who tries to get a conceal carry license. (tongue firmly planted in cheek)
he was committed at some point?
I thought he had only sought private counseling.
are the CSI folks in Arizona checking for fingerprints and tracking down the person who owned the gun and may have brought it to the public meeting?? That should make it easy to determine if the person had "a conceal/carry license"...no???

Well, MAYBE. It coulda happened! It coulda! Really!
Since when is it responsible to carry a gun around so loosely as in ones pocket that it can fall out. This is not the proper way to conceal a handgun. Thankfully the gun did not go off when it hit the floor. Even if the bullet did not hit anyone, you can bet many people would have been injured, trampled on, and possibly killed from the mayhem that would have resulted in the shock of the blast.
A man is at the townhall where President Obama is about to speak and he is carrying a handgun strapped to his leg. Since it's not concealed he is not breaking the law. The SS and police are watching him. What is the message this nut is trying to send? Give us back our country or we will ?????
... but I'm not sure you can walk around with an openly-carried weapon, either. Otherwise, you'd just have a permit to do that.
Better be careful...he might puncture his teabag.

Could this be an attempt to rile up the gun toting people that have been saying Obama is going to take their guns away? Is this a call for reinforcements of the fringe groups to counter union groups attempts to stop them from shutting down open discussion at Town Halls?
Same shit, different tone. Now, even the tones are merging.
CNN is no better than Fox Lite.
This is the thing that pisses me off more than anything. It is the insane defense these assholes give the crazies who do this stuff. "Maybe they had a license." Why not, "The person was a jerk and should not ever be allowed to have a gun again." Or "People are afraid that euthanasia is possible (Gingrich)." Not "There is not a euthanasia clause it would not ever happen and it could not ever happen." These people do not have the ability to do or say the correct thing.
... is the ignoramouses in the home audience nod sagely and go, 'Yup, that Newt Gingrich sure is one smart fella.'
It's what happens when you get people to suborn their own choices to the wisdom of people who don't give a shit.
Some states have pretty restrictive conceal/carry laws, but others are ridiculously easy.
For example, Florida.... My oldest brother inherited a pistol from another brother. He received his conceal license in Florida by virtue of his honorable discharge from the Navy Reserve. Now, I have nothing but respect for the folks who serve, but there HAS to be some semblance of sense in a rule like that. I can see granting that permit for an infantry soldier, or somebody else who carried a weapon at his/her side. But not every armed forces member carried a weapon. I asked my brother, who flew on a submarine hunting P3, how often he shot. His answer? "10 or 20 rounds in basic training 25 years ago."

“Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR, and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in TARP money, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no
... the police chief in Isleton, California (a small town near Sacramento) basically said he'd issue a CCA to anyone who applied and met the criteria. The place was swamped by Rambos lookin' to get themselves a permit.
The safety and security of the POTUS overrides any gun laws.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
... was tryin' t'take 'way 'r guns.
/sarcasm
it doesn't hold water.
Laws are laws 24/7. When police or other government agents can change laws simply for the convenience of their agenda, we go back to Bush.
You remember those "free speech zones"? Completely destroyed the citizens' rights to a peaceful and lawful assembly.
We just can't pick and choose when laws will apply and when they won't.
Law of the land. Mudshark is correct on policy!
the Constitution usurp this citizen's right to carry his legal handgun in a legal fashion?
... the Second Amendment specifically addresses the right to bear arms as 'a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.'
Mind, you're standing in defense not only of this person's questionable right to bring a lethal weapon into a public forum, but of every other kook who has taken a legitimately-owned and obtained firearm and shot up a school, workplace, or church.
From a Christian standpoint, arms have no place in the house of God. Shame.
I'm not a Christian.
So the 2nd Amendment takes away his right to legally carry a weapon?
Seems counter-intuitive.
How does a question of Constitutional rights bear credence to the defense of someone else's actions?
There was a really good discussion of the 2A a couple of days ago.
I wish I could remember who brought some really good evidence and understanding to the table, but it basically rendered the interpretation of your argument impotent.
No time to look for it now.
Gotta go to target practice.
Try not to shoot yourself in the foot again.
they do change laws. Not on paper, but in the implementation of everyday life and how they wish to impose their authority and will.
They choose to corral people who do not agree with a President and keep them away. The law of the land says these people have a right of peaceful assembly.
On the day Bush rolls into town, that law is usurped by the local, state and federal authorities.
They change the imposition of their will via undermining laws to suit their needs at any particular time.
some questions of legitimate concern.
Thanks.
I think you misinterpret or possibly misundertestimate my aim.
Whatever.
When it comes down to the Prez, no one is allowed to possess any firearms while in somewhat close proximity of the President.
Not even close. This country has a history of losing Presidents. And almost losing them.
The secret service would never allow it.
No one is saying you can't own or carry your weapons. You just can't do it with the Prez around.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
Police and "other government agents" don't make or change laws. The legislatures do. Free speech zones did not destroy anything. An inconvenience that we didn't do anything about when we could have. Our fault. And, quite frankly, if the people in charge can "pick and choose" what laws they will and won't apply, then so can we who they derive their power from. Catch up.
This lady and so many more right wing fruit loops just don't see how insane it all is. They've lost touch with reality. "Sure, it's ok to pack heat to a town hall meeting." You just never know when someone is going to yell at you and you can always pull out your piece and shoot them or at least threaten them to be quiet.
Good God...we have really lost a big chunk of this country to Nutsville mentality.
We truly are a nation of morons.....f*cking dumb morons. We're #1.
This woman's an idiot. Just because one might have a permit to carry a concealed weapon doesn't mean they can carry it EVERYWHERE. Many states limit the carrying of firearms in federal and state buildings and places where alcohol is served.
But you know what? It is interesting that the guy didn't pick up his gun and start shooting everybody with it.
wait...its interesting that he DIDNT pick up his gun and start shooting people with it? Id think it would be MORE interesting if he picked up his gun and DID start shooting people with it.
Yeah , just wait til a lib shows up with a weapon these right wing nut Nazi's will be crying like babies and come unglued . How I hate and despise these low life lunatics , absolute scum . Well all the nuts and dummies found a home and a family didn't they ? Fox news , Limbaugh and the Republican party , they finally feel like they belong ... and they do . A purge is in order .
Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .
I don't rely on law enforcement to protect or defend my family. Law enforcement officers come after the deed is done. The bad guy is usually long gone. I'm not knocking LEO's, they can't be every where all the time. But I take responsibility for insuring my families safety. I'm not a a gun nut, and I hope I never have to kill someone in self defense. But if I ever find myself facing the end of a barrel of a bad guy's gun, I want to give myself a chance to live, fight, and be there for my family another day. I'm a Democrat and I want to be able to defend myself and my family if I have to. LEO in my area can take as long as 30-45 minutes to arrive. A lot can happen in that time frame. To bad idiots like this guy make a lot of responsible conceal carry permit holders look ignorant. More than likely he isn't even a permit holder, if he is then his permit should be revoked.
gun at an anti-abortion rally. The wingers would be calling for gun control for some, but not them, just like they insist on health care for them but not others.
