The Daily Show: We Don't Torture
From The Daily Show April 20, 2009.
Stewart: America, where we are..is a simple country governed by simple rules. In fact, the simpler the better.... We don't torture. Three words, that aren't said enough that symbolize America like I love you or where's the beef. Totally clear. No matter how bad it gets. No matter how ruthless our enemies, we... don't... torture. Now whether or not that statement is true isn't the point. The point is..don't f#@king worry about it.....
Oh great!! So instead of just enjoying the fact that we don't torture, we're going to have to sit through a list of the things we do do, in a blatent attempt to hurt our brains.
My favorite part was him taking my good buddy Peggy Noonan to task for her idiocracy on This Week.
Stewart: Just keep walkin'. Slavery.... Genocide..... Hey you know what else you want to do when you're walking, you want to do this (holds ears) because the screams of the people that are getting tortured might get really loud. Ladies and gentlemen that's Peggy Noonan putting the question of why our country tortures people into the same category with why men have nipples.

I'm a big fan of Jon Stewart, and his trenchant wit has more than once helped me make it through times when our country seemed to be going insane. But I just cannot find the humor in our having tortured prisoners or in the mofos that try to justify such actions. Maybe once the bastards that wrote the memos "justifying" torture and those who called for the memos to be written have been tried and convicted, I'll be able to look back on all this and laugh.
But not now.
..there is always "gallows humor" for the rest of us. It's never really "funny" in a traditional sense anyway. It's a combination of revulsion, humor and truth.

But now I can't stop thinking about why men have nipples and why I like them so much.
was the funniest Daily Show clip I have ever seen! Awesome.
Thank you, Jon Stewart!
There's just something about this that sticks in my craw. I'm perfectly willing to accept that is my cross to bear, and I don't have a problem with others enjoying the humor. I just can't laugh until I have some assurance the bastards will be held accountable. I fear relieving the pain through laughter and having nothing more come of it than that.
and understand how you feel.
I enjoy this kind of humour. Life is always so depressing and it's a welcome relief for me.
Cheers, sciguy!
Your kind words and understanding are most appreciated.
my fists for a minute or two. Laughing at the horrifying absurdity of the situation and its wingnut defenders keeps me from losing sleep entirely.
What I try to remember in these times is a quote from Gandhi, 'First they ignore you, then they mock you, then you win'. PUKIES know their FOOLKING misadministration is going down. We're at the mocking stage, so...........we've already won. TRACK IT.

this just goes on and on - but since the media likes a simple narrative - it evolving into "are you pro torture or against torture?" Bring on the investigations ....
Her voice is so damn condesending......just keep on walking. Fuck you!
That's the last refuge after patriotism.. a smile that threatens, condescenion that the poor schmucks don't know what she knows so they'd better watch out, while she keeps moving, escaping to live and pillage another day..
That's her name: Condescending Rice.
this is a piece of genius in my opinion. getting a laugh at someones expense. that someone being the hypocrites on the RIGHT. the leadership and it's base that lied and belittled us for several years. these same people that breached our constitution/our place as leaders in the world. these same people who criticize other countries/peoples of the world for inhuman treatment of it's people. the BUSH administration is finally having/getting some payback. maybe we'll have the last laugh.
sang about the UK and Armagh prison, but it still applies today, 30 years later...
We don't torture, we're a civilized nation
We're avoiding any confontation
We don't torture, we don't torture
American hostages
in Iran
Heard daily on the news
forget about Vietnam
You can ignore the 32
There are 32 women in Armagh jail
political prisoners here at home
the British state's got nothing to lose
It's a subject better left alone -
We don't torture
we're a civilized nation
We're avoiding
any confontation
We don't torture
Alleged crimes withheld information
She gets no sanitation
dries her shit on her cell wall
feeling cold and sick
She gets a couple of valium
Now she's relaxed for the next interrogation
naked spreadeagled on her back
it's a better position for internal examination
it's a better position for giving information
An armed guard squad she gets a beating
bleeding and wounded she's stopped eating
has a baby gets nothing for pain
they came and took
her baby away
We don't torture, we're a civilized nation
We're avoiding any confontation
We don't torture, we don't torture
We don't torture, we're a civilized nation
We're avoiding any confontation
We don't torture, we don't torture
WE DON'T TORTURE
It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.

who go ballistic about Israel's repression of Palestine--what were they saying about Ireland a decade or two before? I mean, England's been torturing Ireland for centuries... .
That song is the perfect tie in - Its the Noonans of the world who forgot the Irish experience with the British - and ape them - vote republican - and have become authoritarians which really dissappoint me - but I suppose if they can "walk on by" the abuse of children by priests - as most of these types have - whats a little torture (irish catholic american on this end so no generalized denigration of the Irish intended - just aimed the turncoats like Noonan and the other "Reagan Democrats" who pull the ladder up after them and have become "More British than the British")
At least they wrapped their victims necks in bubble wrap to protect their spinal columns. They're not animals...
Oh... crap, they are animals.

If only Hayden could remember what that "thing" is called. A horsecollar specially retrofitted for Muslim men.

And they never mention the permanent and severe brain damage to the one (known) survivor of 183 waterboardings. How is that different than a war crime?
Cells of militants are not privy to the 'plan'- only to their mission, confirming the desire for false confessions to connect iraq to al Q.
OT, when do we get to the millions stolen by contractors over in iraq? I mean 8 years of fubaring the nation takes it's toll... but we must clean this mess up completely and thoroughly.
Peg is a slimeball. I thought it before but now I am positive. I listened to that show and my jaw was on the ground when she said it.

Take a listen, this is what we should be doing about torture. NOT what Obama is doing with the CIA.
I also encourage you to listen to part three, he talks about the drug war and sucession. Time to put aside the Left right bull.
"Oh, it's in the New York Review of Books, where tens of people have heard of...:."
LOL LOL LOL
Jon Stewart would be the host of "60 Minutes" and that show would not be the hour long puff piece it has morphed into over the last decade and a half. And people rushing to the defense of this behavior by decrying its revelation are despicable.
Great example of the old mystification technique.. a wink and a mysterious smile and keep moving.. a great nation, winks and smiles and moves on through as the syncophants cover its ass, oligarchy uber alles..
... move along.
Or we'll arrest you.
"It should be a mystery." Ah, sweet mystery of life at last I've found you... torture! Shhh! Let it be our little secret...
still fucking Reagan's corpse.
The Worst Of The Worst: Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Perle, Kristol, Wolfowitz, etc.
They need to be sent to the Hague and tried, convicted if possible, and executed if proven guilty.
Tell us Peggy, just what are some of the 'mysteries' that we're supposed to live with? Who really killed John Kennedy and why? Robert? Martin Luther? Reagan/Bush's bribing Iran into holding the hostages until after the '80 election?
When I heard of her 'tortured' logic, I was reminded of a Haiku I first heard some 40 years ago:
None noticed the smell...
Walking to church in the snow...
Burghers of Dachau.
should be shamed out of the spotlight.
Noticed this a while ago, is MSNBC the ODonnell channel or what? Noron, Lawrence, Kelly...
and I've always been a proud Irish woman and it breaks my heart to see my name associated with the goofs from MSNBC. A while back, I noticed an overwhelming preponderance of Irish reporters/pundits shilling for the Bush bunch and that also made me terribly sad.
how often a "Great Nation" needs to do something like this before it ceases to be a "Great Nation" or get a free pass on this shit? Personally, I think "once" is the correct answer.
We are, occasionally, a nation that strives to be great, and even more rarely, achieves it.
I don't know what I would do if I didn't get my daily laugh from Stewart showing which criminal acts the Reslugs are being busted for today.
to the children of the people who try to excuse or justify the behaviour that J Stewart described: Your parents suffer from extreme mental illness. Because of their influence on you, it's more than likely that you suffer mental illness too. For the sake of you, your children and the world, please get therapy.
can't be helped.
