The Daily Show: Lou Dobbs Interview

From The Daily Show, Jon Stewart's interview with Lou Dobbs. I love that Stewart hit him right off the bat for why the right only collectively freaks out every time a Democratic president is elected to office.

Isn't it amazing how these right wing blowhards who fulminate, lie, spread hatred, and peddle conspiracy theories day in and day out, profess to be non partisan moderates and behave like completely reasonable, harmless pussycats when they're not on their own shows (or on friendly territory like F*x News)? The cowards!

about the mariachi band (who all did a great job)!

But then, I once read a remark about how xenophobes want our (Latinos) food and pop culture, but they draw the line at Papi and Mami coming here...

who say whatever they think will keep them on the gravy train. They don't have to believe what they say. It's all a game to make money.

BigD145's picture

Lou Dobbs didn't get a gravy train? He was paid 8 million dollars. That's some major gravy.

...I'm just a normal American, like the rest of you. Except I'd need a small army of cheap labor to withdraw all of the money from my bank! Where can I find some help...?

when dobbs was a guest on the independent news show, 'democracy now,' dobbs was condescending and bullying to juan gonzalez-who held his own and did so with grace and dignity.

your point is well taken tho'-as typical of these incendiary bloviators, dobbs seemed to spin his views to appear moderate for the stewart show. still, dobbs is a shameless demagogue who would burnish this reputation by appearing just to be another 'thoughtful republican'(oxymoron?). or maybe he's on meds.

http://www.democracynow.org/2007/12/4/fact_ch...

also Amy Goodman, although I believe his bullying of Amy was more rooted in sexism than xenophobia, as I expect his bullying of Gonzalez was.

I love Juan Gonzalez, he does an excellent job on Democracy Now.

yes

points well taken. (i drifted in my recall to the the juan gonzalez part; dobbs was belligerent and condescending to both and both amy and juan were up for the challenge, of course)

'also Amy Goodman, although I believe his bullying of Amy was more rooted in sexism than xenophobia'

Yeah, I'd say if he was being condescending to a white lady it's probably not xenophobia.

FloydGeorge104's picture

I watched Amy Goodman on Dish Network. went to TimeWarner and guess what, No Amy Goodman. The networks what ever they can to keep her from getting any air time on TV. Just more of the courporate bullshit to keep the Truth from the American people.

we are an empire, and Stewart is the only person allowed to speak truth to power: the jester.

How

Shakespearean!

;)

Timothy Finney's picture

Shakespearean? I hope not. In King Lear, things do not turn out well for either Lear or his jester.

Sec_Humanist's picture

Stewart is the court jester of our times. His role is to point out the folly of those who hold power. The only difference is that, in medieval monarchial times, it was the king/queen who appointed the jester, a sign of humanistic balance and caution. Today, the jester fires from the sidelines but now has more time to aim.

"Secular humanism -- a fearless, realistic world view replete with doubt and scepticism that attempts to attain an unachievable state of equilibrium between and among the human qualities of reason, intuition, imagination, memory, ethics and common sense.

Dobbs is on the lunatic fringe of the radical right minus the religious crap.

Liberalicious's picture

Hmmm...I think Walter Cronkite had his own political leanings, too, but you'd never know it from listening to his NEWS cast. That's what "neutral" means, dumbass.

Dobbs, you were FIRED for being an unprofessional POS asswipe and a disgrace to when journalism used to mean something.

gump's picture

And I will repeat it again. The only real journalist we have left on the teevee is John Stewart and Colbert. They may make it comedic but honest. That's why the right hate them. Not the comedic part, the honesty. If you haven't watched it yet, watch Colbert tear apart Palin and her so-called book on his Word segment. He called her book a flaming pile of shit.

...the right hate comedy, too. Have you ever seen what conservatives pass off as 'funny'? It ain't pretty...

gump's picture

You mean that long running show they had on FOX News channel The Half Hour Comedy Hour or all of FOX News. It's hard to tell what was suppose to be comedy.

I thought the long running FOX News Channel was the conservatives' stab at comedy.

about the popularity of health care reform.

Dobbs got Jon to go on the defense with typical Republican misinformation that no one wants reform.

gump's picture

Yes he did miss that part. He should have nailed him on that. Polls do show that nearly 67% of Americans want the public option. But that number is a little skewed. 94% of moderates and liberals want it. 100% of Dobbs type don't because they were told that it's and evil government takeover

Jimmi the Grey's picture

Jon stated that the majority want the Public Option and Dobbs countered that the majority don't want Obamacare. Dobbs refused to see truth when Jon pointed out that the Public Option is NOT Obamacare, and that Obama (to his shame) has presented no reform options. Realizing that his point was made, and that Dobbs was just gonna keep repeating 'Obamacare, it's Obamacare!!!' Jon simply moved on.

Captainapathy's picture

...Just finished watching the whole thing. Stewart is having an excellent week and month. Anyone think VP Candidate Governor Mayor Beauty Contestant Stay At Home Mom Kinda Author Sarah Palin's got the guts to come on Stewart's show? He is, by all measures one of the fairest interviewers out there, but far more honest than the traditional media...

gump's picture

I don't think John would even want Palin on. He couldn't contain his laughter or anger. But he would make her look like the fool she is. Then she'd go running to facebook and twitter calling him sexist and play the victim of the MSM.

Why is it that people like Dobbs and other right wingers change their story when they come on TDS? They try to come across as moderates, and act like they never said the things they did, in fact, say previously. Stewart didn't call him out on some points, like the statement that 85% of people are satisfied with their health care. That's not true. These wingnuts just toss out percentages that are blatantly false, and nobody wants to call them on it. I like Jon, but he should have stopped him right there and made the point that Dobbs was wrong. The conservatives keep spouting falsehoods and they just get away with it.
Sure, Stewart was being polite. But he should not have been. He should have stopped Dobbs in his tracks every time he made a false point. Like when he said that he was independent politically. He is obviously a right wing nutjob, and he should be called out for that.

Captainapathy's picture

... I think the views that they give on the TDS set are probably closer to what they actually feel. The views that guys like Beck and Dobbs give on their shows are aimed at growing their audience from a specific demographic. It's about ratings and money, as it is for all 'conservatives' in the know... The ideology means nothing in the face of revenue.

seatech1's picture

I'm sorry Captainapathy. I can't buy your explanation. I think that what they spew on their own forums are what they really feel, and when they appear on other shows, they act all surprised that anyone would find them to be extreme. There may be some element of wanting ratings, but that's not what motivates the wingnuts to do what they do. I think they're liars, and when they get on shows that have reasonable conversation, in front of a sane audience, they pretend that they never said those things.
It's like saying over and over that someone tells lies, but then they say, "but I never called them a liar".

Roket's picture

However, your reputation precedes you. If you’re a middle of the road independent, then Jon is a liberal fascist or something.

FAIL.

Fuck off Lou Dobbs.

You lost and it's now time to move to the center? You're fucking kidding, right?

Incremental change to health care? Just what in the fuck do you call adding a public option like the rest of the world does? And making it structured so that only 5% 10% of the country is eligible for it. Pretty much exactly what Medicare does.

Annoyed Canuck's picture

I was hoping - and half-expecting - that Stewart would go after Dobbs like he did with Jim Cramer. You know, play back video clips of Dobbs' lies and obfuscations, show the man for what he is, and make him eat it on camera.

Instead, we have a spirited but cordial interview/chat that lets Dobbs off easy and allows him to lay down his 'Republic-not-a-Democracy' stuff unchallenged.

Why were there no clips of Dobbs' birther outbursts?

Timothy Finney's picture

I think Stewart made his point through rational discussion. The Cramer interview was an anomaly as Stewart sees the "Crossfire" mentality to be a detriment to the nation's discourse.

Which is not to say Stewart wasn't confrontational. He just didn't scream or refuse to let his guest speak the way, say, "Ted Baxter" at Fox does. Stewart's points were consistently logical and Dobbs was forced on several occasions to walk back his statements or try, often unsuccessfully, to clarify his meaning. This was no walk-in-the-park interview for Dobbs, despite the rather low-key approach Stewart took.

Jeanne's picture

I'm a little confused too concerning my comment above. Whatever it was I did or wrote...sorry.

Wesley E. Ledjennes's picture

needs to be prefaced by restating facts about how Republicans and "conservatives" LIED ABOUT EVERYTHING concerning health care reform in the main streem media FOR SIX MONTHS this year.

We have witnessed the most wide reaching and hard-hitting PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN that I have seen in my life time... and it continues. It's a modern political miracle that there are STILL bills alive in both Houses.

And the whole fight was NEVER really about health care... it has been about THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OBAMA's PRESIDENCY.

The deep irony here is that Dobbs lost his CNN megaphone over illegal immigration. He's an idiot.

wonderland's picture

I'm a lot concerned that the anemic efforts of the Obama administration thus far can be sold as socialism. The misleadingly titled public option and the so-called reform being put forth by the Democratic leadership is so pathetically short of what we need and even that would fall far short of real socialism. If they're going to get away with labeling it socialism anyway, why aren't we fighting for the single-payer system that would really make a difference? Faint heart, thy name is the Democratic establishment!

FloydGeorge104's picture

Country. I rember when a person fucked up they got Fired. You were out the door. Now when one of these asswipes get fired they get 5 to 20 million to leave. WTF. I wonder if lu boobs wanted to check the bands green card.

Whitehouse's picture

Finally, this sounded like a normal debate. Without one debater trumping over the other. Sure, the views of Dobbs are way more extreme than he showed here but just from a viewing position, this was enjoyable. At the end of part 3 Stewart concluded with a speech which put it all together. All those items, be it healthcare or global warming, it all result to extreme fearmongering etc.

Bit of a shame he didn't include birthers' conspiracy, in which Dobbs is one of the main culprits!
