Jon Stewart takes on fear monger Betsy McCaughey who brought her great big prop of a bill with her to appear on the Daily Show. It was more of the same from McCaughey with the government wants to kill grandma type nonsense.

Part 1

Extended Interview Part 1

Extended Interview Part 2

And lookie here: ‘Death Panel’ Myth Creator Betsy McCaughey Resigns From Medical Board:

Betsy McCaughey — an outspoken proponent of the myth that Democrats’ health care reform proposals will lead to the creation of “death panels,” as well as a former lieutenant governor of New York and adjunct fellow at the Hudson Institute — has stepped down from her position as a director of Cantel Medical Corp., which bills itself as a “leading provider of infection prevention and control products in the healthcare market.”

thanks.

WHY

Why are the "only" people you hear on the news media explaining or attacking the health bill are persons which have their own health insurance which will not be effected by this bill..
They air this BS from a persons which only objective is to kill the health bill and do not bring facts to the table and dribble out a bunch of nonsense..

THEY DO NOT HAVE A HEALTH BILL YET,,,, SO HOW CAN THE REPUBLICANS QUOTE WHAT IT IS ABOUT>>..
But I believe this bill should "not" be passed if it does not have a public option in it... It should have a single payer option ,, but we know the health Empire has paid the democrat too d... much money for that..

If the democrats were really sincere about a good health reform bill they would be giving Americans the details they wish to put in the health bill , instead of double talking and "only" telling Americans what "will not" be in the bill..
EXCEPT:
They want all Americans to be covered (and you can bet your a... that after it passes the illegal's in the country , will be make LEGAL very fast.... They want their vote in 2010)>>

They want to cut tests: Which will include X-Rays--Cat Scan--MRIs--Blood tests--etc??

The Drug empire will tell the doctors what type of prescription then can write for their patients.
.
AND EVERYONE WHICH THEY CAN SQUEEZE A PENNY OUT OF WILL BE FORCED TO BUY THIS INSURANCE>>

If they do indeed deal with 'infection prevention,' they can't be very effective at it or they'd never have had to fire this bitch in the first place.
The infection entered the system when she signed her employment papers. If you were an expert company in 'infection protection,' you could have prevented this venereal infection by never hiring something like that in the first place.

He did a great job debunking her nonsense and demonstrating her utter and complete lack of reading comprehension. She was never able to point to any text that said anything remotely like what she asserted it did. Good job Jon! Too bad he's now on vacation for three weeks. I'm guessing we could compile a list of guests we'd like to see him grill in that time.

take on Rahm or Timmy Geithner, but he'd probably gush on them. He does that with "some" of his guests.

and completely unbiased against anything this country does ever...

But I could care less what you would love to see. When you get old enough and mature enough to see what others have seen and done, then I will care. Teens should be seen and not heard when they cannot discuss the subject at hand without being distracted.....

Oh and you want something positive written? Ok. I'm positive the bankers got trillions. I'm positive the Cash For Clunkers was the auto bailout Part 2. I'm positive that Obama will flip flop on many more issues. I'm positive, that the Dems will pretend to shoot themselves in the foot, and blame it on the evil Rethuglicans. I'm positive that Obama will be a one term president. And finally, I'm positive that 90% of posters on progressive and liberal blogs, are not liberal or progressive but trolls from both official parties.

so the answer was "no."

:)

Last night on Countdown, Keith Olbermann said that insiders told him that she was FIRED! Yeah Jon Stewart. Whose got next? COME ON DOWN!

someone's footprint on her ass!

The dining room table has left the room!

Back during the election, Jason jones flew to Wasilla, Alaska, to interview the current mayor to see if being mayor makes you ready to lead the free world. It was comedy gold, but more importantly, how is a Comedy central show were the only ones to think of doing it?

It's spooky times, when no one is saying anything relevant at all to offend the king & ruling class, except the court jester,...

...Jason Jones flying to Iran to cover the election only to witness pandemonium erupt? And he finished his report anyway, but with a tone quite a bit more somber.

And several of the pro-peace public figures he interviewed were arrested but days later.

Jason Jones in Iran was difficult to watch. He had no subtlety. It was like watching a marathon of Colbert in stereo.

This was crazy. I'm so glad Stewart doesn't let his guests get away with this crazy hyperbolic BS like (almost) everyone else does. Why is it that these nutjob right-wingers are so against government intervention in health care, but are completely ok with black site prisons and torture? The cognitive dissonance is giving me a big, decade long headache.

My birthday is coming up in October. The best gift I can conceive is Liz Cheney on the Daily Show.

Of a Liberty University graduate.

First off, this lady, like many right-wingers who are trying to shill for an industry or a theology, is condescending towards Jon Stewart. Jon is WAY too polite to call her out on it, but I do recall a woman telling Bill Maher once that she believed she held a truth that Bill did not about God and Bill called her out on it big time. I mean, Jon Stewart read her the section of the bill she wanted him to read and showed how it said the words "Life sustaining treatment" and the lady STILL said he was wrong. Now (in Jon's words), two things - 1) she knows that it says what he's pointing out to her and is willfully lying or is such a narcissist that she can't admit she's wrong or 2) she's INCREDIBLY stupid and doesn't understand what she's reading as well as she thinks she does. I'm going to assume it's the former if, as she says, she does have a PhD and I can't see many major universities just giving those out to anyone (unless their parents are major donors of course).

The other thing I LOVE about right-wingers in this argument is this - they don't use empirical data (we know science scares them), they love to use anecdotal evidence. Here, this lady brought a letter of 1 physician and as Jon rightly points out, he surely couldn't find someone righting a letter in favor of the bill (in a sarcastic voice of course because he probably could if given the chance).

When Jon states the fact that we're ranked so low on infant mortality and life expectancy, she says it's because of car crashes and violent crimes? Considering we're ranked below ISRAEL, we are either in a lot more trouble as far as violence goes in this country (which I guess is possible but I haven't heard of any car bombings in the US lately, have you?), or she's full of crap. I'm going with the latter.

it just gives you a paper saying you wrote a paper and passed your orals in a particularly small segment of some arcane subject.

She claims to have a PhD in "reading bills." I think she's full of shit. No reputable university gives PhD's in reading bills. She then says her degree is in Constitutional history. That sounds more like a BA from a good school or an MA from a mediocre one.

There is always the possibility that her degree is from Boxtop U or its religious equivalent Liberty.

He's a Rhodes Scholar and wants to bring down the Canadian health care system using re-importation of drugs.

I agree with you... she's just one more lying liar who believes her own bull$hit! Gawd, there are a lot of 'em out there!

And since when does having a degree make you smart? Never! Either you're smart or you're not... this woman is not smart. She's learned the system of repeating what she thinks the system wants to hear.

You can educate a moron but all you'll have is an educated moron.

referring to $50s and $100s...

What you are completely assuming is that intelligence = morality, which is nonsense... since intelligence is a neutral concept. That is why we refer to "evil geniuses" people who are very smart, but lack moral fabric to do the correct thing from a moral stand point. In the same sense that we can have retards who are literally the salt of the earth.

Having a PhD demonstrates that you are an expert in the subject at hand, it does not mean you are going to win the "humanitarian of the year" award. I fail to see why that is somehow a strike against educated people, while the same can be said about people w/o a PhD... yet they get a free pass. Quite an intellectually dishonest position if you ask me.

She claims that U.S. life expectancy beats all others when you factor out murders and traffic accidents. She's wrong.

She cites a report by Ohsfeldt and Schneider (in "The Business of Health", American Enterprise Institute, 2006), where the authors generate a life expectancy graph with the U.S. at the top. But there's one problem: unlike all the authoritative studies that show the U.S. lagging other developed countries, their data is not based on age-at-death statistics. It's based on an ESTIMATE of life expectancy based on GDP-per-capita, which naturally puts the U.S. at the top. Real data from the OECD and WHO show that accidents like murder and traffic accidents account for only a small fraction of life expectancy, not nearly enough put the U.S. at the top.

Remember, McCaughey is credited with starting the use of the term "death panels" which earned a "pants on fire" (least true) rating from the Pulitzer prize winning fact check site, Politifact.com, who called the notion a "ridiculous falsehood."

carrying 1/2 the 1,000+ page bill. I was scared that she was going to pull a Lenny Bruce and read the whole ^%$#ing thing to us. Then I was disappointed that she didn't.
What better was to contiue to laugh at her while Stewart is off for the next 3 weeks than to have her take his slot on CC and read it verbatim.
It would have been comedy gold!

I love how she's not even prepared to back up her claims. its as is nobody ever
asked her to site the direct source and quote it, but rather just stared at the
big scary book and said "wow those are a lot of pages, i guess she's right."

how awkward when it she just keeps thumbing through and finding nothing to
the point where stewart has to go to commercial.

makes me wonder if that was just desperate clowning on her part just to kill time
and gtfo before she was proven logically fallacious on all of her points.

from years of either going on Fox or speaking to rooms of people that were trapped and nodding off and really not paying attention. It's time that these "experts" had their feet held to the fire. My guess is it will be the rare exception that can actually produce a cogent argument supported by facts based in reality.

Why are so many of these ignorant, Reslug morons always ugly blonde bimbo's??

Which reminds me... you should have seen Chuck Todd whine like a little bitch last night on Real Time with Bill Maher. Journalist/author Jeremy Scahill ("Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army") had just remarked critically about the job that the MSM is doing... and, in particular, called Todd out for not asking tough, but legitimate questions since he has frequent opportunities (i.e. White House press conferences) that others don't. Todd tried to defend that, but didn't or more likely, couldn't.

If this woman, chuck todd, and the rest of the MSM represent the best that America has to offer we are truely fucked as a country!
republicanism is a mental illness!

I hope she didn't lose her health insurance when she got fired. Cause I'm pretty sure (honestly) from listening to her that there's some paranoid schizophrenia afoot.

The passage she reads and interprets as "they want to give doctors a bonus based on how many old people they put down!!!", I interpret as "We want to collect data showing which doctors accurately carry out the patients' stated wishes, and which doctors ignore the stated wishes and do whatever the hell they want." A healthy brain would never get it that wrong.

The bill, and Stewart, state science while Betsy rambles religious drivel. Both things occur in the head, but only one is reality.

I really dont know why these wingers would go on TDS, when they do, the results are always the same. I think many of them get so full of themselves that they think they can either handle themselves in a debate, or obfuscate their way through one with lies and such. Problem is, it's not exactly a debate on TDS, it's satire. And against satire they have no defence.

Raking in the big bucks pimping for her corporate sponsored masters. Her conscience and compassion were rendered null and void by hearing those nine pieces of silver in her purse. Looks like this self centered sociopath sold her soul to the company till long ago.

People like her are toxic waste in our political discussion.

"The Congressional Budget Office said, in its July scoring, that only 1% of that cut [in Medicare spending] would be from reducing waste, fraud, and abuse."

Wait. Isn't Medicare a bloated government program crippled by inefficiencies?

You can't have it both ways, Betsy.

We need to spend more on healthcare?

"The bribes just ain't what they use to be with inflation and all, and the CEO's need bigger bonuses!"

"Until 98% of all the wealth is concentrated in the hands of the top 2%, America will never be a free patriotic country!"

Sincerely,

- Your typical corporate fascist republican psychopath

Instead of wink wink Palin, we have thumbs up McCaughey. These repuke bimboes all seem to be trying to mask their ignorance by acting cool.

It does work to a certain degree; because they don't look cool, they look stupid, which is different than looking ignorant, so I suppose they have accomplished something.

Stewart did a great job!!

During her ass kicking, did you notice how she threw out the "I have a PhD" line? When they do that, you know they're losing an argument.

It doesn't make any difference, Ms. McCaughey, if you have a PhD or not. What matters is whether you have your facts straight. It's possible to find someone with a PhD who will say ANYTHING if you pay them enough. It's possible to have a PhD, yet possess no degree of intellectual integrity.

WHY do so many right-wing crazies come on Jon's show? He makes them look so stupid. In addition to this bozo b*tch, I think of Bill Kristol. He has been on several times, and each time, Jon makes him look so nutty. Yet he keeps coming on. The only thing I can think of is that the GOP knows that young people (the majority of Jon's audience) are Democrats and they think they can get to them this way. By being mocked?

Yes, Kristol says he and Jon are friends, and they might be, to an extent. But the last time he was on, Jon made him look like a total fool. Jon got him to say the military DESERVED good health care, but the rest of us didn't. He actually made him agree with what he, himself, had just said. And, at the end, he shook Jon's hand, smiling. "Thank you, Jon, for making me look like a total imbecile."

It reminds me of the financial freak coming on, acting all contrite, and then going on MSM shows, railing against Jon. Too late, buddy. It seems you all go on Jon's show, then go home, thing, "What happened?" and then trying to get out of it. TOO LATE.

Jon is very good at what he does.

The real Perry Mason revelation there was that Bill Kristol believes the government-run VA system provides the very best healthcare possible.

Any exposure is exposure.

McCaughey is evil and did push the death panel stuff, but it bears noting that euthanasia conspiracies among the base and euthanasia propaganda from right-wing politicians was around for years before. This is the most prominent and shameful campaign of some familiar BS.

I could say you're from "one of the major parties," from the line you're taking. Not a formal accusation, of course, but what better for the Republicans than to widen the split between progressives and Blue Dogs? Mm, just what they need now: a Nader type!

Now, that's just my paranoia of course. Unless, of course, we asked you to tell us, o wonderful master, what alternatives you have, and how you intend to build the majorities and political allies to make it happen? Do you actually know, or are just all attitude?

it had nothing to do with the Dems completely alienating parts of the liberal segment of the population, while mistakenly assuming those voters would vote for Gore no matter what. Nope, no siree bob... it could not be that.

Jon Stewart absolutely put to shame most of the "real" journalist's on T.V. Maybe it's a teaching moment, calling a liar out on their lying as it takes place. Interesting concept....And #2 I could swear McCaughey comes from the Pat Buchanan school of" Pulling the biggest lies possible out your ass" while acting like the leading authority on what it is you are lying about.Dangerously psycotic.

I can't trust a doctor with that much interest in a good manicure. I've always considered a gentle click click click of nails on a table...or big fat three ring binder a power thing....as in I own this conversation and I'm pretty to boot.

Now, reality. I've had both parents in intense medical situations. My father had Parkinson's and my mother is in hospice with advanced breast cancer. I, myself had breast cancer when my husband was laid off and we were on cobra. I have NEVER met a doctor who would ever allow a patient to go without needed care. That ain't the way they think. They don't operate like that. It's like telling a mechanic to stop working on the brakes. They wouldn't do it. They have to sleep at night. Doctors care about their patients just like a mechanic believes that the work he does can mean life and death for the driver on the road.

The system is broken. We need reform in the system and we need change in our lives. Prevention is critically important. We need to make dietary changes. When the educated doctor talks about all the doctoring seniors need she doesn't take into account what being overweight does to a body at twenty five and thirty five and fifty five. Same with smoking and drinking. They are huge factors.

Another thing. I work at a clinic and I see people everyday who have no health insurance or bad insurance. We are heading toward a catastrophe. As far as I'm concern the housing bubble will be nothing compared to the problem if we don't get rational about this problem. The bankruptcies due to medical expenses in companies as well as the individual whose family member is diagnosed with cancer or chronic disease, is going to become overwhelming. Do we let people die? Cause that's where it's heading. When I had breast cancer and we were on Cobra and I had to find health insurance for my family (COBRA lasts only 18 months) think of how I felt when I was told by companies that I had a pre-existing condition and was uninsurable. I was becoming the mast of a sinking ship. It felt as if my family was disappearing from the landscape of America. The tears are still close as I write this. And you know what's worse? There was a woman my sister-in-law knew who ignored the lump in her breast because she and her husband were on the verge of being laid off. When she finally could ignore the issue no more she was not only diagnosed with breast cancer but an aggressive form. She had a mastectomy and ended up on chemo and radiation. Her chances of survival went down substantially by waiting. The health care costs went up substantially by her waiting. And the tragedy was increased by knowing that her existence depends on the luck of the moment. She had small children. What do you tell those kids?

I have NEVER met a doctor who would ever allow a patient to go without needed care. That ain't the way they think. They don't operate like that.

Your statement is a generalization unsupported by reality and my own personal experience.

I don't know which doctors you've been exposed to and which ones you've missed, but many doctors don't even have a choice. If your implication is that the primary problem in our system is not that doctors refuse to provide care to patients who can't pay, that may be true, but there really is no way to know, since many doctors don't get to make that decision.

My regular physician (formerly) works in a clinic. The clinic board sets the policies, not the doctor. If I can't pay the day of the appointment (either by presenting an insurance card or actual payment), I don't get to see the doctor. So, you might argue that the doctor isn't the one denying me care, but it is a meaningless distinction. Further, I have no idea what the doctor would do if he couldn't hide behind the clinic board's policies. In other words, if he were on his own, any money I didn't pay would come directly out of his pocket.

The same goes for hospitals. My doctor can't order up a free cath lab or operating room. So, even if he or she were willing to work for nothing, I'd still have to get the hospital to agree.

I have lost my health insurance. I recently went to a community clinic for care. I take opiates for severe chronic pain, but the doctor at the community clinic couldn't prescribe opiates for me because of federal interference in the practice of medicine. I was absolutely stunned when the community clinic doctor recommended that I try to buy narcotics on the street. I was stunned for two reasons. First, here was a medical doctor advising a patient to commit a felony. Second, one doesn't save any money buying narcotics illegally. So, to get pain medication I have to pay $100 for a five minute (or less) doctor's appointment. We don't need to discuss anything, I don't get any kind of check up or service, I just hand over $100 so he can sign his name to a prescription.

In a very real sense, dental care is medical care. I've never met a dentist who would provide care pro bono to an individual patient, except through a community clinic program. And then the only care was for extractions or major dental disease -- and the care was limited to "stabilizing" the patient. Of course, in this country we treat dentistry as though it is a luxury, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

You write: "Do we let people die? Cause that's where it's heading."

But, Jeanne, if every doctor is willing to provide care no matter what, then how is there a problem? I'm in my early sixties now, so I've seen medical care change dramatically in my lifetime. I grew up with house calls and doctors who did their own billing. The doctors I knew in my childhood were willing to reduce fees and even write off patient bills entirely -- and they were free to do so. Those doctors simply needed to make enough money. They weren't in it to maximize their incomes. And they wouldn't deny care based on an ability to pay. But, Jeanne, times have changed.

Perhaps, you simply worded your original statement in a way that can easily be misinterpreted. However, in the end, it doesn't matter who denies the care.

Now that is one seriously creepy humanoid.

These idiots believe that we don't get it, she is for a plan where the government will send checks subsidizing health care throught the private sector, but would not lower costs. So, THEY ARE THE ONE CREATING TROJAN HORSES to make sure the private insurance companies will get even more money, rather than solving the issue which is very simple: WE CANNOT HAVE FOR PROFIT HEALTH CARE. Why would I want more of my tax dollars to be spent on health care profiteers, rather than have it used to save lives?

...you really need to check yourself into a mental institution. I am sorry...but she is f*cking crazy. I've NEVER seen anyone on TDS appear this f*cked in the head as this idiot.

Go repugs. Put all your marbles on this one. she is your leader. God, we are a nation of f*cking morons...and if this stupid bitch can lead some of us, it just shows how the more insane can lead the morons down the toilet in this country.

I REFUSE to go with them!

The system is broken but the doctors I have met provide care. If a person comes into the clinic and can't pay it is a different matter. It's a management issue and usually a not for profit clinic will help a patient get seen but also connect with the state (MN) to get health care. The doctors have to get paid or they will no longer exist as a clinic.

What I'm saying is that the health care debate continues to make statements about the death panels and who will get what care and from my experience the doctors give the best care they can. I've only met one cold blooded doctor in my life.

Adv. Directives and Living Wills. First of all they ARE NOT simply "death wishes", the principle can request that ANY AND ALL live saving measures should be applied to save their life in this document. Second, not everyone has a lawyer, let alone an estate planning lawyer, retained for their needs. However, with universal health care EVERYONE will have access to a physician who can EXPLAIN this document to them from a medical POV and what that means with respect to end-of-life decisions. As someone who works with legal aid serving income qualified people who have a life threatening illness, it would be nice to know that, by the time their case comes to my office, a doctor has at least explained the implication of the document to them rather than have me explaining this at their sick bed with distraught friends and family who have no clue what to do or what the wishes of their loved ones are and pray that they will not be asked to make that decision for them. Living wills and adv. directives take the pressure off the family/friends and lets them know what you want to happen in the event it comes to making decisions regarding sustaining your life when you are unable to voice this decision yourself.

I find it insulting that somewhat intelligent people are continuing to maintain that these documents are "pull the plug" documents that are part of a "death panel" arsenal. I would like to know how many of these talking heads that object to this valuable consultation have living wills/adv. directives themselves. More importantly, I am concerned as to why these same folks would object to the government paying knowledgeable people to explain the implication of having such a document in their life planning matters.
