David Shuster talks to Margaret Carlson about whether there is any legal basis for the request by Sarah Palin and the Alaskan state Republican party for a special election. Apparently they think Uncle Ted Stevens should have a chance to win his seat back and that Mark Begich should resign.

I would say no.

States have their own election laws, but once a person is installed in Congress Federal law gets involved.

Fuck you, you lost! Oh, and fuck you! Oh and STFU!

Succinct.

and pizza!

You think losing would stop a Rethug from trying to steal an election?

See: Bush V. Gore
See also: Coleman V. Franken

Coming soon: Tedisco V. Murphy

When Diaper Dandy Vitter can run on Family Values...
When Grandma Palin can run on Absinance Only Sex-Ed...
When Governor (Insert Name Here) can run on fiscal responsibility...

Then Tube Top Ted can run on ethics reform!

Where the hell do they get the idea that getting off by an technicality that really had nothing to do with the trial means your innocent?

she's just so special, dontchaknow. Yew betcha!

*wink*

The Rushthugliklans steal a presidential election they lost. They are now urging Coleman to try to steal the election he lost by trying to get Coleman to appeal to the same anti-democratic conservative activist court that stole the election for Bush. http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/senate-re... Yet they expect a Democrat to resign a seat he won fair and square?

Bwah,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha! These Rushthugliklans are pure comedy gold!

I say, Begich MAY resign, if only

The Republicans hadn't been such DICKS about seating Al Franken or...
They hadn't been such DICKS about trumped-up charges on Sigelman or...
They hadn't been such RACIST DICKS about Ford or...
They hadn't been such DICKS about Matt Cleland or...
They hadn't been such DICKS about Monica Lewinsky or...
They hadn't been such DICKS about the Florida recount or...

IF THEY WOULD STOP BEING SUCH A BUNCH OF DICKS!!!

Then maybe, just maybe, we would consider it. But why should we even consider it, and why should we be punished for Holder doing the right thing?

I'm going to take a contrarian view here. Maybe Internet Tubes Ted was not as guilty as the government made it out. Maybe old Ted was on the up and up. Maybe the government was just trying to screw him because he said something they didn't like. Maybe he crossed Dick Cheney. Just because the government is prosecuting somebody does not mean they are guilty.
Internet Tubes Ted is probably as guilty as sin but with our government you never know.

Edit: In no way should there be another election though.

And I came to the conclusion that Alaska being pretty much under the radar as far as National politics is concerned.
That the asshole got too comfortable with his power.
And got greedy. Now, you might say, What? A GOPer getting greedy?
Nawwwwww.

I'm with you on the prosecution of innocent people. But I don't think anyone could look at the evidence and say "Maybe he's on the up and up." Just take the "probably" out of your last sentence. ;-)

However, bottom line is the Justice Dept's own rules say they should not start, or make public, an investigation close to an election date if such action could possibly have an effect on the election.

Stevens was indicted in July and convicted in October; the election was in November. You do the math.

All things considered, however, we have a long history of accepting the vote as certified and moving on to the next cycle. There have been many more egregious examples of political hanky panky in this country.

So sorry, Repubs, election's over... buh bye!

More likely: There was too much publicity about his obscenely open thievery to ignore.

So they decided to prosecute him, but to sabotage their own case! That's why Tubey Ted was convinced that he had not been convicted despite a guilty verdict, he knew the fix was in.

does not mean he is innocent. There are the legal wiretaps that clearly show he was involved.

BTW, do you think the reverse would have happened with a Dem being convicted and a Rethug Justice Dept. overturning the verdict? I think not.

Margaret Carlson needs to get some glasses that are wide enough to fit her head!
Her eyes are almost on the outside of her eyeglass frames!

I know that this is a silly, frivolous comment that has nothing to do with the issues,
but her glasses drive me crazy! I don't know how she can see through those ill-fitting spectacles.

Sorry, I just I had to say it.

Given the news about her family, I really think she ought to lay low and pay some attention to her own family. I am not saying that she shouldn't have an opinion, but gawd, for the sake of the family just be quiet for a bit. Clean up house and then start swinging away (if you want).

I live in Alaska, and it's not easy to be a progressive in a conservative dominated state. There are times where conservatives want to talk with me about politics, or religion. Usually I just let them talk, because it's not like they are interested in my thoughts, or beliefs. Conservatives just like to be angry, and it makes them even angrier when they discover from my not adding to the conversation that I'm a progressive.

Last night however was different. I went out with some friends from work, and the topic of Palin, and Stevens came up. I spoke up after they complained for awhile how unfair it was that Ted Stevens wasn't a senator anymore, and how there should be a special election. I simply said the following. "It was a fair election, and the voters made their choice when we elected Senator Mark Begich". After they complained some more, I followed it up with "It's good that we can agree to disagree". Also someone ,I forget who, added "It's also good that we have the freedom of speech". It felt good that of the five of us in the vehicle, my employer supported my feelings, and what I had to add to the conversation.

The conservatives wanting a special election, and for Senator Mark Begich to step down is one more example that they don't want to follow the laws, or the voice of the people when it pertains to them. I personally look forward to the next regularly scheduled election for Alaska governor, so I can cast my vote to pick a governor other than Sarah Palin. She is extremely parisian, and looks out only for herself, and people of wealth. Thank God she wasn't elected Vice President or the growing poverty in Alaska, and America would become far worse.

Thanks for your post. I am glad that someone from Alaska reads this blog.

We have just the opposite nutjob for governor in Nevada; a rethug who does NOTHING! His proposed budget - cuts to everything, including education and services. Why? He was pushed by the casinos on his NO NEW TAXES mantra. UNLV and UNR would be cut by 50%. The schools would close.

Rethugs want dumb people as that is the main way they get elected.

Keep us posted.

The want to play that game maybe they should have special elections for David Vitter and Larry Craig.

Vitter will that the tit, Craig will take the tat.

Top 10 elections that needed do-overs
by Jed Lewison
Sat Apr 04, 2009 at 06:20:05 PM PDT

In the spirit of the demand by Sarah Palin and the Alaska GOP that there by a do-over of November's U.S. Senate election, here's the top 10 elections that should have been done-over:

Gore-Bush, 2000: Because even though Gore won, Bush somehow became president.
Kerry-Bush, 2004: Because the media didn't grow a spine until Hurricane Katrina happened in 2005.
FL-16, 2004: Because voters didn't know that Mark Foley was into underage pages.
TX-GOV, 1994: Because if Bush hadn't won that election, he'd never have become president, and America would be a better, stronger country.
GA-SEN, 2002: Because Max Cleland deserved another shot at that worthless chickenhawk, Saxby Chambliss.
ID-SEN, 2002: Because Larry Craig deserved a shot at running as who he really is.
FL-STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 32, 2006: Because Bob Allen waited until after the election to offer a cop $20 for the right to perform fellatio.
LA-SEN, 2004: Because voters didn't know that David Vitter was one of the DC Madame's most prominent clients.
Republican primary, New Hampshire, 2008: Because independents in New Hampshire didn't know McCain was stupid enough to pick Palin as VP.
McCain-Obama, 2008: Because if the NH primary were done over, there's no way McCain would have been the GOP nominee.
Of course, this is just one top 10 list. There've got to be many more that should be added to the docket...

When Patrick Fitzgerald got Scooter Libby he was an overzealous prosecuter hell bent on punishing Republicans....when he's prosecuting Blagovich, a Democrat, those same people think he's just doing his job.

They really have to make up their minds at some point.

I have not met a Democrat who thought Blago was getting railroaded.

"personal responsibility" conservative have a habit of blaming everyone but themselves for their crimes and failures.

What do you expect from a bunch of whiners. They feel they are entitled to everything, even when they loose. They are poor loosers. They remind me of little kids when loosing a game they want to change the rules so they win. If the Democrats had suggested a special election so their man can be then elected just think of the outcry from the Republicans. The would be on every news show stating that the election was over and we do not do redoes. So Republicans get over it you lost. Be a man and admit you lost

Of course Mark Begich should resign. He was only elected by the voters, and that's not good enough for Republicans. If someone you don't like is elected, just set up another election so a criminal has a second chance.

Palin should resign. She has problems with the law, like Stevens, her buddy, though she hasn't entered the big time stakes yet.

The copy seems to imply that David and Margaret are supportive of a special election and that the Alaskan Hulk should be allowed to run for his seat again. I SEE NOTHING to indicate that both are ridiculing the idea that he is 1) innocent of the charges and 2) should be allowed to run again!

WHERE DID THIS RIDICULOUS COPY COME FROM?

Ridiculous. Stevens lost and in fact probably was guilty. Just because the Bush justice dept screwed up doesn't mean he gets a do-over.
