From The Hill--Cornyn concedes Reid is unlikely to step down:

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) admitted Monday that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is unlikely to resign due to racially insensitive comments he made about President Barack Obama in 2008.

Cornyn, who is chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), joined other Republicans in calling for Reid's ouster but conceded that the possibility of it happening is farfecthed.

"Frankly, I don't expect Senator Reid to resign," he said on MSNBC.

[...]

"What this is about is his hypocrisy and hypocrisy of folks on the other side when Trent Lott said something that was far more innocuous than the racially tinged comments that Senator Reid made," Cornyn said.

Jon has already pointed out how ridiculous this statement is--GOP Whistling Dixie on Lott-Reid Comparison. I also think that someone who has a 7% rating from the NAACP such as John Cornyn ought to be treading lightly when it comes to throwing around accusations of racism. I'm not thrilled with Harry Reid's leadership for other reasons, but this manufactured outrage by the Republicans who will make political hay out of anything is just ridiculous.

Did he say "reckless spending and deeth---" Sounded to me like he was bringing up death panels and caught himself.

with a really mild Texas Caucasian accent. If he was trying to say "death," a true Texas accent would have made it sound more like "def." He said "debt." You were probably expecting him to say "day-yut." It his ability to are-tickle-ate that makes us Texans proud of him. You should abandon your racially tinged audio expectations.

I think we should celebrate that Republicans have finally come on board with political correctness and we should remind them how much they support it every time they complain about it.

We should be able to write what we want. However, we should be conscious to what we are writing and just be a bit more culturally sensitive.

I think Political Correctness is one of the worse things to be enacted upon the human race in regards to language in a long while. (I actually detest political correctness more than acronyms used in text messages and on internet chats).

OK. My head just exploded. That was one of the most outrageous and counterfactual distortions of the truth that I have heard from a Republican, and that is a very high standard indeed.

So, is the issue here that someone actually READ this book or that no one knows who read it and dug up this little ditty and "leaked" it out in the middle of the healthcare debate?

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Or is this more obfuscation to divert attention away from REAL stories...like the healthcare sellout or the blowback on the Democrats by labor.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

The real story is that in addition to being a political hack, Harry Reid is a shallow, self righteous, holier than thou white politician who holds a leadership position for which he is wholly unsuited.

But, of course, that pretty much describes literally every white politician in Washington.

Not much of a story THERE, eh.

Trent Lott said, "If we had elected Strom Thurmond President, we wouldn't be having all these problems we're having now." Thurmond ran on a segregationist platform. You try to concoct an equivalency from that?

I don't like Lott's politics, and suspect that they strongly reflect his personal priorities. But I don't think, and I never thought, that his statement was sufficient to warrant a boot from the post of senate majority leader. Frankly, I think Lott's statement was simply a bunch of yahoos celebrating a geezer who should have been retired.

I'm fully aware of Strom Thurmond's platform, and his shortcomings as a human being. But it seems a little strange to me that we should cite Lott for being racist/insensitive when Thurmond inhabited and others of similar bent still lurk within the Senate. I mean, if you were to strip every closet racist in the Senate of his or her post/position, my guess is that you'd get rid of at least 1/3 the members.

As I mentioned down thread, Andrea Mitchell reminded everyone this morning that it was bush's silence on the matter that led the republicans to boot Lott.

Of course, from Cornyn-lala-land, he's absolutely right.

It's not a big deal because their racism is as natural as breathing to them. Admitting error requires the ability to acknowledge wrongdoing.

The republicans are like little pond fish. They will swim to and try to make food out of anything that lands in the water. Who cares if indeed it is edible, they will chew on it for as long as they can.

They know a whole lot of the public has a short attention span and an even shorter memory. How many people who are even following this story will go back to see what Lott said and the facts surrounding it? I'm guessing not a whole lot. They just take what people like Cornyn say and accept it as fact. That's the sad part and could be the dangerous part.

Too true. I remember when we were talking about prosecutions of members of the preceding regime, 'til that got knocked out of the public consciousness. Ending the war, same thing. Discussions about the craptacularity of the HCR, gone.

It's funny (strange funny, not haha funny) how there's always something to distract, just when things get interesting.

Today on Morning Joe, Joe was still raising hell about what happened to Lott compared to what is or is not happening to Reid. Andrea Mitchell set him straight when she said it wasn't the Dems who ran Lott out of town, it was the fact that bush remained silent about what Lott said and then the Republicans turned on him. The Republicans canned Lott not the Dems. Of course then Joe agreed with her as he continued to bitch and moan about the hypocricy of the dems.

The GOP is all over this - empirically because they are so seldom on the right side of race issues. So when a Democrat makes a mistake it stands to reason they would attempt to dominate news cycles with it. Even Tucker Carlson's new online rag (unwittingly?) admits to this.

Coryn said of Reid ""I think fundamentally what this does is raises questions about Senator Reid's judgment." Why worry about a splinter in your friend's eye when you have a log in your own?

Honestly I hope Republicans keep pressing this because it could cause a backlash where media/blogs enumerate the cornucopia of racist/classist gaffes GOP members have made over the years.

Or it could have a bonafide benefit by forcing Harry Reid to step down.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

But there are so many past incidents that would expose the GOP as flagrant hypocrites.* They'd have to do an inordinate amount of bluffing to make this poker hand pay out. Not to say the Republicans couldn't pull it off - I just see it much more likely to backfire on them.

*This can be said of almost any social or political issue.

What blowback are you expecting?

The Trent Lott thing has NO political effect on anyone, cause he's gone.

This is ridiculous, the right has been trying to pull the same fast one on the black community that they have pulled on the white. That's why you have these idiots trying to say that the Democrats are the real racists. I had a guy try to tell me that it was the Republicans that fought for civil rights, but when I constantly pointed out that the segregationist that WERE Democrats all became Republicans, he ignored it and claimed the Southern strategy was really about economics (much like history revisionists claim the Civil war was really about tariffs and not slavery).
When you push these guys however their racism shows, the guy I am talking about above, when I point out that all of his stupid claims will not get more black people voting Republican then claimed that blacks dont understand freedom, that we are too uneducated to fully understand the Constitution.
I mean what do you really say to that?

I am reading a book right now called "the bloody shirt" which looks at the years of reconstruction in the south. It is pretty interesting the parallels in the rhetoric from the hard-core confederates with the same crap being flung around by the right-wing today, not really surprising though because the modern rightwing has much in common with the old confederacy and always has. They just don’t let their naked racism out for all to see as much as the old confederacy and hard-line segregationist used to do.

...of all the PHONY, MANUFACTURED outrage that the Republipukes SPEW these days. And all the yelping about Reid's comment is just that. Yeah, someone complimenting a Black man is JUST LIKE lamenting that a RACIST segregationist didn't become President. I remember when Trent Lott got himself in trouble about that...he went on every program on BET to kiss Black bootie.

Robt's picture

Let me see,
Republicans pushed for impeachment of a Dem President for having sex between two consenting adults.

They ignored the Republican speaker's infidelity at the time.
Gov. Sanford of South Carolina is defended by the same extreme republicans that, to this day resent Clinton's sex-capade and would still impeach Clinton to this day.

Of course, Sen John Ensign of Nevada with his actual hush money is not a issue with republicans, as larry Craig and Mark Foley were not as well.

you elitist liberals have to understand that republicans have God on their side.
Case in point, Brit Hume's treasured republican advice to Tiger Woods. "what ever your sin, just become christian and your forgiven".

I guess republicans say an awful lot of Hail Marys so they can cleanse the conscience and go out and justifiably sin again with NO criticism.

the Religous Right Sinner's are bombarding HIM with daily that HE hath No Time to address the poverty, illness, disease, war and famine here on Earth.

Is it possible it's up to us to fix that ourselves??

Innocuous huh? Supporting a candidate running on a segregationist platform vs supporting the first African American president's candidacy. It's funny watching repugs call Democrats racist. No one takes them seriously.

All the Republicans are brain dead

Why

can't someone just say, "John, you're full of shit." Maybe some day...

Once again proving that Republicans are shameless liars. Unbelievable. To suggest that someone who makes statements endorsing segregationist/discriminatory policies is less innocuous than comments that were essentially truthful, all be it clumsy, endorsing a black man for president. Go figure. Only a Republicans twisted logic could possibly produce such a conclusion. I don't see the GOP asking the opinion of anyone outside their all white elitist Party, other than Steele, what they think of Reid's comments. How about asking a few African Americans on the street what they think.
