After a Romney adviser was quoted as saying this the other day to the UK's Telegraph: “We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have," Stephen Colbert decided to come to Mitt Romney's defense on his show Wednesday night.

Colbert: Media ‘Gotcha-razzi’ Going After Romney Over ‘Anglo-Saxon’ Article:

A few years into his first term, President Obama still just doesn’t seem American to Stephen Colbert. And Mitt Romney’s campaign seems to agree, Colbert said Wednesday. [...]

Now the media “gotcha-razzi” is going after the quote as a “racial code word,” Colbert said, as in “White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.”

“But Mitt’s campaign isn’t saying that he’s a WASP,” Colbert said. “They never said ‘white’ or ‘protestant.’ They’re saying he’s an ‘AS.’ A big one.”

I don't think Romney could convince anyone he's a WASP. Whether he's an AS is another story.
