Chuck Todd Tells Jeremy Scahill "That Was a Cheap Shot"-- "You Sullied My Reputation on TV"
It appears Chuck Todd didn't take too kindly to Jeremy Scahill's drubbing he received on Real Time the other night. From Glenn Greenwald:
According to Scahill (via email), Todd approached him after the Maher show and the following occurred:
Right as we walked off stage, he said to me "that was a cheap shot." I said "what are you talking about?" and he said "you know it." I then said that I monitor msm coverage very closely and asked him what was not true that I said on the show. He then replied: "that's not the point. You sullied my reputation on TV."
Media stars are so unaccustomed to being held accountable for the impact of their behavior -- especially when they're on television -- that they consider it a grievous assault on their entitlement when it happens.
Check out the entire post where Glenn's got much more on some similar events going on lately besides just his own dust up with Chuck Todd. Joe Klein got into it with Aimai of NoMoreMisterNiceBlog who happens to be I.F. Stone's granddaughter. Glenn and Marcy Wheeler had an ongoing feud with Marc Ambinder of The Atlantic. And now we've got Scahill and Todd's back and forth on Real Time.
Glenn summed all of this up much better than I could ever hope to:
Todd's condescending responses illustrate the same point as the above episodes with Klein and Ambinder: in the eyes of Beltway mavens, those who warned about and worked against the radicalism and lawbreaking of the Bush administration are the fringe, crazed, out-of-touch radicals. While Todd was fiddling around with pretty colored maps and fun polling games, Scahill was courageously investigating one of the most corrupt, dangerous and lethal private corporations in the world, yet it's Todd who understands and must solemnly explain the hardened realities of politics to Scahill, the confused and silly Leftist.
There's little question that when people look back at this period in American history, it will be difficult to comprehend what happened in the Bush era -- and especially how we blithely started a devastating war over complete fiction, while simultaneously instituting a criminal torture regime and breaking whatever laws we wanted. But far more remarkable still will be the fact that, other than a handful of low-level sacrificial lambs, those responsible -- both in politics and the establishment media -- not only suffered no consequences, but continued to wield exactly the same power, with exactly the same level of pompous self-regard, as they did before all of that happened. Looking back several decades or more from now, who will possibly be able to understand how that happened: the almost perfect inverse relationship between one's culpability and the price they paid for what they unleashed?
In fairness to Chuck Todd, he was not one of the ones out there cheerleading for the war and I really liked him when I'd see him on C-SPAN's Washington Journal about every morning when he was working for The Hotline. He's a numbers guy. He was one of the best in the business at reading and sorting through the numbers on how our elections were going to turn out. I don't think coming to MSNBC however, has been good for Chuck Todd.
And now he's on there with the rest of them repeating the narrative of how terrible for the Democrats it would be if any investigations are allowed to happen, and if anyone from the Bush administration is held accountable. It's all politics to Chuck.
Here are my thoughts on that. One of the reasons it would be turned into a game of politics is because Chuck Todd and the rest of the beltway media would report it as such, instead of a legal matter. What Chuck Todd is relaying is what the Republican Party would like to see happen if the Democrats or this Department of Justice goes after the law breaking. It would be the choice of those in the media to validate the Republicans' sniping, which would inevitably follow (and already has for that matter), or to dismiss them as playing partisan politics in order to cover up law breaking for political gain.
Of course since the media was part and parcel in allowing the atrocities of the last eight or nine years, that's never going to happen.

Wow, couldn't ask for a better example of the mindset mainstream journalism in a nutshell then that exchange.
todd sullied himself
And now he's concerned with his "reputation". Fucking hilarious!!!
than someone on TV pointing out they just said something stupid on the TV in their presence. And when it is true it becomes a mortal sin.

First rule of Teevee Club: Never say anything bad about somebody else in Teevee Club.
Boohoo Chuckie.
Near the end of the program, Todd insulted Scahill, arguing twice that Scahill was pushing a narrative in order to sell books. If Scahill actually wanted to insult Todd, he could have commented that had Todd and others actually asked tough questions instead of worrying about airtime they could have exposed the numerous transgressions of the Bush administration.
I don't think Todd's a bad guy. Like Chris Matthews, however, he's a self-promoting opportunist who thinks access is more important investigation; he's an empty suit masquerading as an actual journalist, someone who's so enamored with being invited to the party that he's willing to overlook obvious points in order to avoid ruffling feathers.
You’re an egotistical, stuck-up, self-important jerk whose shit doesn’t stink. Not that that’s a bad thing!
Jeremy Scahill got under the thin-skin of Chuck Todd. Mr. Todd needs to grow up, get a thicker skin, and stop repeating propaganda on behalf of the corporate whores he is whoring for.
Indeed, these mainstream media "folks" as they call everyone cannot look at themselves honestly. In media study after media study it shows how close media people are to government like never before or is it unlike any other time? The media in fact do help shape policy by reporting or deciding what not to report as news. In Nancy Snow and Philip M. Taylor's Journal Article, entitled, “The Revival of The Propaganda State: US Propaganda at Home and Abroad since 9/11” from the “International Communication Gazette” they write that:
"One myth is of a supposed adversarial relationship between government and the media. This is a myth that is convenient for both communities and is sustained for mutual benefit. Another common myth is that overt censorship in news organizations does not exist. It does, and has historical precedent, the result of benefits that reporters receive in their career advancement, but also benefits that the government receives in return for media complicity in government efforts to mislead the public through domestic propaganda (e.g. Saddam’s WMDs). We must acknowledge the enormous reliance in corporate media on spin and official versions of the truth."
We need to contact NBC's advertisers and suggest Todd is deserving of the same 'abandon ship' as Beck. Whether it's hate or a pompous doofus who thinks he's ENTITLED to spew horseshit on the air, the corporations aren't going to move until the consumers impact their money line.
They're already feeling the pinch from the internet and bloggers (or so they say). So perhaps they'll be a little easier to convince.
I'm not a great Todd fan, but to even put him in the same sentence as Beck, let alone calling for the same tactics, is ridiculous. Todd doesn't deliberately skew things, or rabble-rouse like Beck. Using the boycott tactic against someone who doesn't necessarily say things we like is a dangerous tendency.
Correct. You don't want to over use the boycott tool. If you do it soon has now effect. To use it for somebody like Beck is completely justifiable. To use it for somebody like Todd would not work. We can get to Todd by other means.
boycotting should be used for assholes who REALLY deserve it.

Very disappointed indeed!
Instead of raw, whole labels, he boils the damn things, then even throws out the stock, which is where most of the glue ends up. Even a heathen like me steams the labels to retain the vitamins.

... is a perfect example of the 'false equivalence' defining the 'mainstream media' problem.
It doesn't matter that he was called on the carpet by Scahill over FACTS. No, Todd believes that because he's NBC's pretty boy in a suit, he deserves to be heard and given automatic credibility.
Face it, Chuckles ... you're not NBC's 'political director,' you're a 'political OFFICER' - like the useless flaks who used to be placed throughout the USSR bureaucracy and military to preserve party ideology.
Todd being mad at someone even though HE was wrong.
Just amazing.
got his ass handed to him on teh teevee...
Big fuckin deal chuck, get over it, if ya don't want your rep "sullied" then don't leave yourself open for it by being such a needling little schwance!
Poor Chuck, someone needs to tell him his diapers were sullied a long time ago.
It was dring the BUSH years when he and the other news toads stayed silent and forgot to do their jobs... this guy takes himself WAY to seriously. How in the world can he actually think he has credibility?Oh noes, chuckie got sullied. Don't hold your breath like that, you'll make yourself sick.
Chuckie is a master-sullier. He doesn't need anyone to sully him, he does it to himself all the time.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Todd does NOT have the street credibility to have a reputation to be sullied. He needs to work a few more years in the trenches and get his hands dirty and bloody before he has a reputation.
This guy is a puppy....

The 'mental image' of David Gregory 'gettin' down' with K.Rove while the Country 'burned' is why MSM can kiss my A$$!
... if the media DID THEIR JOB and separated schmoozing from factual reporting.
Instead, the media let themselves be conned and bribed for the illusion of access without questioning 'access to what?'
That's a good one chucky. Didn't you do a couple movies where you scared children? You can't work that kind of magic on adults that use their noodles.
You don't have a "reputation". You don't have a clue as to what news is, as you are a gossip columnist for a rag. Aren't you puffed up about someone blowing the wind up your dress?
If Chuck's the WH representative for MSNBC he should quit pushing the republican agenda or does someone else write hiss scripts for him and he be only a narator?
OK, folks, let's start taking bets:
Yesterday, a man at a Chuck Grassley Town Hall compared Obama to Hitler and said he would go to Washington with guns if others would join him. Grassley didn't say a fucking word. How long before he's called out. AAMOF, how long before this Senatorial POS is charged with sedition? Oh, is that crickets I hear, Mr. Matthews? Mrs. Greenspan? Mr. Snuffleupagus? Mr. Williams? Schieffer? Gregory? Scarborough? Bueller? Of course, Chuck Todd surely knows that calling out Grassley could only slow down Washington from getting things done. Tsk, tsk.
And how long do you think it is going to be before one of these teabagging MFers uses the N-word? I wanna see the pols and MSMs reaction to THAT. Can't wait to hear the excuses for "real Americans, speaking their minds
I've talked with friends about this on occasion. I'm sure some GOP figure will finally crack and declare it at a public event. Sure, the easy money's on Glenn Beck, but I favor Michael Steele, in his final attempt to have the GOP base finally embrace him.
I suspect that the N-word already has been bandied about in countless emails. If not, then most assuredly they are thinking it.
With re: Todd, someone please give him a hankie so he can cry his widdle eyes out.
That's the freedom they're protesting for...the freedom to be openly racist, so they use their most favorite word.
when he referred to "that . . . ONE!"

And connect with the real world. Everyone, including you, is accountable for your actions and statements. If you are arrogant enough to believe that you are above accountability and your opinion is automatically fact, that would place you at par with the rest of your MSM colleagues. Us non Beltway real people could care less about your fatuous obsession about image over substance and respect is ultimately earned, not an entitlement.
Do us a favor. Try raising the bar of your severely sullied profession by humbling yourself and realizing that you are not some feudal overlord looking condescendingly down on the serfs.
"We will find fulfillment not in the goods that we have, but in the good we can do for each other."

and how about us non-Beltwayers are ready for the prosecutions to begin!
He meant "confirmed" my reputation, not "sullied".
How do you sully a person's reputation by repeating something they actually said.
has no reputation to sully.
He is nothing.
sully his reputation on TV,he does a fine job of doing that all by himself. Everytime he opens his mouth.
A portion of Scahill's exchange with Todd ecapsulates the conflicting views between the MSM and bloggers:
"I then...asked him what was not true that I said on the show. He then replied: 'that's not the point. You sullied my reputation on TV.'"
Really?! A journalist saying the truth is not the point so much as appearance is?! Mainstream media outlets have avoided upsetting the sponsors for decades now by replacing the truth with the appearance of truth. Sure, CNN won't look into the motives behind the Iraq war, or who's standing to benefit from it, but they'll be embedded with the troops, so that HAS to look like reporting, right?
didn't they think they were all that and a bag of chips?!?
If we don't prosecute these offensive traitors, we deserve the bad rep the entire nation will carry for decades.
MSNBC should trade Chuck Todd to FAUX for Shepard Smith, straight up. The Shepster has been known to utter actual facts once in a while, and stray off the talking points into reality on occasion. Would be a much more natural fit for both.
A person with 2 last names for a person with 2 first names. How novel!
Stranger things have happened.
well played.... well played... ;-)
that doesn't turn my stomach.
If Todd would just do his job instead of trying to climb up the personality ladder of the cable news corner he would be doing himself a big favor. Right now all he wants to do is be the go to guy on Morning Joke and kiss up to the right side of the corporate faction of MSNBC. He could do just as well if he just told the truth and did and said what the correct thing should be. Like calling the deal political catnip instead of saying that the congress and White House should absolutely investigate and prosecute these torturers because that is the only way they will not do it again. If he would say that these fuckers will feel they can do it any time they determine it is alright if they are not prosecuted he would have more credibility than saying that it will be embarrassing if they get prosecuted. David Shuster is doing alright calling these assholes out on the bullshit they are trying to pull. And Shuster has his own show, kind of. Of course Shuster doesn't get to masturbate Joe Scarborough in the morning like Chuck Todd does.
but don't you see? People like Todd simply want the accolades to magically fall from the sky, based on acquired position, NOT any actual work accomplished.
I mean, actually doing the work and risking your rep or even your life is much, much too hard for today's 'journalists' (I have yet to find a true contemporary journalist--can anyone help with that?).
... most of the M$M is made up of incompetent jackasses with a real bad case of narcissistic personality disorder.

Corruption favors the wealthy.
..Chuckie has a problem with or just The Truth in general?
... and have no idea whether or not he rooted for Carl Williams. ;)
Corruption favors the wealthy.
Unfortunately, I think that the only people who know anything about this are those who watch Bill Maher's show, and I really doubt much of his audience really changed their opinion of Chuck Todd after the show.
But good on Scahill. Someone needs to make the point that these talking heads are full of it. Maybe if they're brought under scrutiny more, the "untouchables" like Todd will quit and go do the weather or something. Put real journalists on TV.
And, isn't it interesting that Mr. Todd used the phrase 'political catnip.' I mean, isn't that just too clever?!
He must have been counting on everyone going ga-ga over his clever turn of that phrase. Surely, as a member of the M$M, he doesn't expect us dumb 'Murkins to get the meat of this story? I mean, that would mean some of us are paying attention!
After listening to this clip twice, I can assure you that the most egregious information I gleaned from it is the fact that the vile Blackwater mercenaries are child molesters and murderers. They should be charged with their crimes and given the maximum penalties under the law.
I think first you have to establish a good reputation before anyone can sully it.
Oh my lord, not only does Scahill have Blackwater ticked at him but now he has chuckie ticked at him too.

I agree that only real journalists should give the news, not Reslug Dick Lickers like Todd etc.
You sure know how to turn a phrase, Limp!
"Over the last five years you people were so good, over tax cuts, WMD intelligence, the effect of global warming. We Americans didn't want to know, and you had the courtesy not to try to find out. Those were good times, as far as we knew.
But, listen, let's review the rules. Here's how it works. The President makes decisions. He's the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration? You know, fiction! "
http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/stephencol...
every now and then to watch that amazing performance! I watched it live, and I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard! I remember thinking afterward, "...we've just GOT to laugh, because the deceit, the abuse, the criminality is JUST too overwhelming!"
When Chuck Todd decided he wanted to grow to like David Gregory, he lost all credibility.
when chuckie boy was a regular guest on cspan he was all about the numbers and what appeared to be a nonbiased view of the political landscape. now that he has become a celebrity he has lost much of his credibility and places way too much self importance on his opinions. i look to the last national election as an example of this. his projections and numbers were far from reality and seemd to be based more on suporting the company script.."this will be a closer election than most people think" and less on a realistic assessment of the actual information. fivethirtyeight had chuckie boy for lunch and he can not hidefrom the fact that he missed it big time. chuckie sullied his own reputation with his cool color map predictions.
If Chuck Todd wants to go only on programs where the host and guests where kids gloves. he shouldn't go on Bill Maher's show where people are allowed to let their honest opinions fly. It was Todd's mistake for every going on that show to have his reputation be sullied.
repub sycophant? hack reporter? childish tv personality?
He's not worthy of his name even being mentioned in the same sentence as journalist.
I wish Jon Stewart would give him the public spanking he so richly deserves.
The worst thing for Todd would be to say his credibility is in the Tapper.

Dear Chuck Todd,
It is YOU who sully your reputation each time you aren't truthful.
Be the reporter you claim to be...
... Or take it like the sissy assed man you defend that you are!
.
Starve the WAR Beast...
... Feed Americans.
Heather said everything we need to know about this.
1. The Bush administration allegedly broke the law.
2. Obama's Attorney General finds sufficient evidence to investigate.
3. "Bloggers" rejoice.
4. "Journalists" warn that it will become a political food fight.
5. "Bloggers" say the law's the law. Congress and journalists must do their jobs.
6. "Journalists" say easier said than done. Food fight, FOOD FIGHT!!!
7. Congressional Democrats try to find the truth.
8. "Journalists" cry FOOD FIGHT!
9. "Voters" cry FOOD FIGHT!
10. "Journalists" say I told you so. Polls indicate voters hate this silliness.
There's no time for truth and justice. We're in the middle of a game here.
LOL . . . you got your reputation sullied, Todd? Are you out of your fucking mind?

You're responsbile for everything you say and DON'T say, even if your bosses limit your speech.
take responsibility for your own actions, quit being a crybaby. Suck it up, and don't blame Scahill because you are a douche.
Your whingeing and wittering on about it is unprofessional, immature, and total proof OF said doucheiness. In other words, you've 'sullied' your own rep, and continue to do so. You have no one to blame but yourself. Now go take a nap, little man.
me-oww!
During the last Presidential election, Chuck Todd's wife worked for the GOP.
It is really time to return to the old days when efforts were made to avoid conflicts of interest or the appearance thereof. Journalists shouldn't be socially mingling with the politicians they cover. Their spouses should not be employed by political parties, politicians, lobbying firms or industries they report on. A journalist needs to be an independent actor divorced from any conflict that provides financial or political benefits. It is these cozy relationships that have been allowed to exist that have diminished the quality of the media, not to mention media conglomerates and consolidation as well.
that Todd gets his talking points from his wife and doesn't even have to open up his email from the Heritage foundation?
This segment could have had some clout outside of the beltway name calling. Blackwater is GUILTY OF SERIOUS WARCRIMES, they have made things worse in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is a highly paid army of thugs who answer to no one. The fact that the present administration continues to retain their services, pay them vast sums of money is an outrage, and one of the sources of Skahill's anger.
The segment broke down with tasteless jokes about 'dollar' blowjobs and trivializing child prostitution. Maher was a clueless idiot by this point and leno was just plain dumb. leno's wife Mavis did a spectacular documentary about the plight of females in Afghanistan.
So the rage Skahill was fuming was over the fact todd and the press corps get bogged down asking questions about talking points, death panels, profiling and beer summits instead of asking about the real stuff like goldman sachs or blackwater...who are also involved in the prisoner mistreatment that is about to be whitewashed. todd could have expressed an outrage from a different, if dispassionate point of view, instead he again took the position that it was all in the past.
Every crime happened in the 'past'
todd is NOT a journalist, he is a talking head that successfully made it through the jack welch gauntlet, he works for GE, nuff said.
These clowns have sold their souls because they believe they will be denied access if they don't play ball with the administration.
Todd knows this, and he likes to be the big shot. He can't be the big shot if the WH tells him to f* off the next time they have a story to leak.
These assholes are no longer independent news reporters. They are profit-driven propaganda pushers. And not only do they continue to deny it, they absolutely hate it when someone else calls them out for it.
It's been my opinion that Todd is probably a victim of the Peter Principle. He did excellent polling analysis for the 2008 presidential & senatorial races, and as a reward he has been "promoted" to a reporting position for which he isn't suited. Now that he's struggling at his new position he's getting hammered by people who wonder what the heck he's doing.
His situation may be nothing more then the result of limited career advancement options at MSNBC. Perhaps internal politics or restrictive HR policies left management in the position that the only established path where they could offer him more money and prestige was to give him the Chief White House Correspondent gig. If my analysis is correct I feel a bit sorry for him.
Maybe what they should have done is give him an important sounding new title and a raise, and possibly a half-hour nerdfest analysis show with lots of great graphics tools for colorful animated charts and guests like Nate Silver with whom he can discuss trends and ferret out interesting data points...?
The traditional MSM reports do not like the competition from people who get paid a heck of lot less than they do.
They are the "big cheeses" and anyone else that is not a MSM "reporter" is not worthy.
from people who get paid a heck of lot less than they do.
They are the "big cheeses" and anyone else that is not a MSM "reporter" is not worthy."
And who pays the big salaries......that's right mega corporations.
These are NOT journalists.
They are corporate PR personnel or paid corporate propagandists, if you will.
Chuck Todd is not a real journalist, he's a paid lackey.
the argument of learned helplessness is real ballzy chuck todd.
justice is not important enough, and it will be so messy, and we probably won't win, and it will be a political food fight which we hate to cover, and people will yell, and there will be hard feelings, and the republicans will be mad, and chuck todd sucks.
Wasn't this cute?
"You accuse me of 'political catnip'. That's political catnip!"
No Chuck. You're accused of, recorded actually, dismissing a weighty issue as a trivial side show. That's an anorexic excuse for not doing your job, as it used to be understood. But you're in fact a shill for the powerful, and a pretty good one if you consider that your job. Apparently you do.
Chuck wants to be a reporter? However when held accountable it becomes the same old RIGHT WING BABBLE about I wasn't looking that close, it isn't fair. When are these WACO pundits going to own up and say sorry my mistake and you have to realize that my Political boss is a Slanted RIGHT WING WAC job that tells me how to and what to say. Please remember this is not about NEWS or Credibility in the NEWS (such as it may be)it is about my PAY CHECK.
Todd's motto "Cowards united for more pay"
Fuck that superficial shill for the bloodsucking system and status quo. Good for Scahill.
... and I was on that panel, I would have cleaned Chuckie's clock, too.
As it is, I've been a truth-seeking journalist for more than three decades, in both magazines and newspapers. Todd's just a highly paid Beltway stenographer who's good with numbers and charts. He's a self-inflated punk who was called on his bullshit.
Good job, Jeremy. Keep on speaking the proverbial truth to power.
BID
Heaven forbid that someone critique the work of our holier than thou MSM. Get over it Todd. Scahill's criticism is justified because they've(MSM) been an epic failure on so many levels that it would take hours to lay out all that is wrong with the way this entity functions today.
What makes the argument more pertinent is that the big news stories (justification for the Iraq War, and the impending economic collapse, etc) were basically set up on a tee for the major news entities to whack out of the park....and they whiffed..BIG TIME!
Whether reporting that half our military has been privatized turns into a "political food fight" shouldn't be a concern of Chuck Todd's. WE get to decide how to react to the news. He should be concerned with presenting an accurate portrayal of what's going on, not the fallout from what he may or may not report. What is this, "you can't handle the truth"? Screw Chuck Todd. I'm a grownup. My congress people are grown up. Report the news. If our congresspeople act like children because of your reporting, so be it. You're not just reporting for them.
And, Jeremy Scahill is awesome!
how about difficult to comprehend the obama administration with the continued employment of many of the loyal bushies that helped to get us into this mess. thanks obama et al. --this is what we get with looking forward without looking backward.
every day is a new disappointment for this whining left behind leftie.
Chuck Todd sold his soul long ago; did he think it went unnoticed. Once, around way early presidential campaign era, he still had a minimal amount of self respect. He quickly became a victim of his own ambitions and Jeremy Scahill just hit the nail on the head for all of us. If he feels sullied; well then, wake up and smell the rose gardem roses chuck, if you didn't have this sullied reputation, trust me you wouldn't have one at all. You are a hack that plays to the right and everyone knows it. You are predictable and you would also suck (equally) if you had instead been offered the MTP gig. Maybe Joe talking point pundit Scarbutt will hire you on when your career takes a dive.
