Chuck Todd not only decided to take a cheap shot at the Obama's this morning on MSNBC, but also managed to trivialize just who would be harmed if the Republicans continue their hostage taking on the debt ceiling.

TODD: The Obama's are millionaires according to new financial disclosure forms released yesterday. The forms show the President and First Lady Michelle Obama hold assets between $2.8 million and $11.8 million and are you ready for this? Almost all of their investments are in T-bills. So nobody would be hurt more by the debt ceiling not being raised than the President.

Really, Chuck? No one else would be hurt more? If the Republicans put us into another recession or worse yet a depression, I think there are going to be a lot of other people who will come out that a lot worse than the President of the United States. I think somehow the Obama's would manage to recover. I can't say the same for the millions of people who are just getting by now and for whom it might mean life and death if our country's economy gets thrown into a tailspin.

Geez, you ain't kiddin', muddie. Pulling comments out of one's ass is not the basis for political analysis. Particularly with issues as complex as finance.

I'm not sure how one goes from acknowledging T-Bill's would crash if the Debt Ceiling were not raised, to deciding that the biggest victim should that happen is one guy in the White House?

Think of how much of our government is backed by T-Bills: The Social Security Trust Fund is in T-Bills, as is our Debt.

I think China and Japan have FAR more to lose if T-bills sink.

It is amazing how some people speak without a filter or a rational review of what they are saying. Chuck is supposed to be a political whiz. He really needs to reevaluate where he is going and decide how to get there. This is not a good path.

VegasRage's picture

Where the hell did he get the idea of drawing lines between the Obama's poor investment choice and raising the debt ceiling as somehow being why Obama wanted the ceiling raised? He doesn't understand anything if that's his conclusion. Chuck doesn't understand we are hopelessly stuck printing now in a liquidity trap.

Don't believe me, look no further than one of the great Keynesian advocates Richard Koo. I'm not a Keynesian as many here know, but for any who don't know who Richard Koo is, he was the guy who did everything but throw the kitchen sink at Japan's lost decade during their crisis in 1990's. He learned first hand the hard way the folly of trying to print Japan out of their hole, which I might add they have yet to crawl out of.

Look what he is saying just today:
The end of QE2 will lead to massive depression according to former Fed economist
http://www.examiner.com/finance-examiner-in-n...

Basically we are in deep sh*t unless we do QE3.We are stuck in a QE liquidity trap, we can't stop printing or we are toast, that will usher in QE4, QE5, and on and on. This is like an idiot who is insists they must not go to sleep to regain their strength, instead their solution is keep slamming down Red Bull's and hoping they'll be just fine later. Silly Keynesians.

What a Maroon!

If Obama looses 90% of his $11.8 million he will be worse off than me if the economy crashes? I'll take that bet!

Bluestocking's picture

You might be surprised just how much the wealthy have tied up in various investment vehicles as opposed to liquid assets -- which means that if the economy crashed, they'd lose the majority of their net worth. In fact, investing is one of the reasons why the wealthiest people in this country have experienced such a huge surge in their net worth over the last thirty years. From 1940 to 1980, the DJIA gradually rose from just over 100 to 1000 and then spent about fifteen years in a plateau -- but from 1980 to 2000, the DJIA shot from 1000 to over 10,000. This means that a single low-risk asset initially purchased back in the 1940's would have been worth about ten times the original price in 1980 but more than one hundred times the original amount twenty years after that (barring mismanagement, investor panic, or company failure) -- and of course, the more money you have invested, the greater the yield. In contrast, most people in the middle class who were able to set aside money for investments sank it into buying houses (and we've seen where that got them) or into a 401K (only to find in some cases that the employer either reneged on their promise to match contributions or actively raided it). Granted, if the economy crashed, there would still be income inequality in this country and the wealthy would still be in a far better position overall than most of the rest of us because they have more in liquid assets and are more diversified...but that doesn't alter the fact that if the economy crashed, the massive gap between the wealthiest and everyone else would crash along with it. If the FDIC crashed along with it -- and there are reports that the FDIC is in the red -- then it's quite possible that not even liquid assets would be enough to keep the wealthy from sharing the same fate as the rest of us.

In the end, however, I don't think we really have to worry that the Republicans will refuse to raise the debt ceiling...my guess is that they're playing "Chicken" in an attempt to blackmail the Democrats into giving them whatever they want, in much the same way that they threatened a federal government shutdown as a bargaining chip. For one thing, many of the same people who claim to oppose raising the debt ceiling are many of the same people who are most deeply in the pockets of Wall Street and the corporatocracy...but Wall Street in particular wants the debt ceiling to be raised because they'll probably be in deep trouble if it isn't. A second bailout probably would not be possible in the event of a government default resulting from refusal to raise the debt limit...but even if it were, given the level of discontent and resentment among ordinary Americans, any mention of a second bailout would probably be met with the modern equivalent of torches and pitchforks.

No one would be hurt more than President Obama personally? Seriously? Of course not.

If it were possible to confront Todd about this he would say, "Perhaps it was somewhat hyperbole, but I was just trying to illustrate that the Obamas are very wealthy".

But take this tiny segment apart and he is deliberately doing a whole bunch of specifically anti-Obama things,

- He's attacking the Obamas for being wealthy. Would Chuck Todd EVER attack a Republican for being wealthy?

- He's attacking the Obamas for being invested in Treasury Bills. He's attacking the President of the United States for INVESTING in the United States.

- After all of the Economists, and even the few semi-grown-ups in the GOP, all admit and are warning that not raising the debt ceiling could cause a world-wide economic collapse perhaps causing another Depression and all of the horrors that a true world-wide economic collapse imply.... Chuck Todd, straight reporter, Political Director of MSNBC, not in a Rachel Maddow opinion position... says that "nobody would be hurt more" than the President by not raising the debt ceiling?

That's not hyperbole, that is breathtaking bullshit.

- And last but not least he is overtly implying that Obama's interest in raising the debt ceiling isn't to save our country from a Depression, yet again, but the reason he wants to raise it is to protect his personal investments. Those evil United States Treasury Bonds.

All inside of 22 seconds.

Chuck Todd is a hack. He is always sarcastic when it comes to the President. What a moron. He shows how unprofessional he is by his comment. FOX hack

mymy's picture

This is one of the most reprehensible comments I've ever heard coming from a normal (i.e., not Fox) commentator.

NBC must fire this man as news director, largely because his bias toward Wall Street, who thinks that people who invest in this country are stupid fools, and against Obama. Did he ever ask about Bush's fathers ties to the arms industry (via the Carlyle group) as Bush got us into wars that raised his income and that of his family? Did he ever question Dick Cheney's investments?

Todd has simply become a mouthpiece for the treasonous anti-Americanism of the republicans and their buddies on Wall Street. After all, it is Wall Street and its banker, whose shortsighted focus on the bottom line has issued rules and regulations for business and demands for short term quick killing profits that have all but destroyed these businesses and left us nothing for the long haul.

Enemies not only of the state and its government. They are enemies of the people.

I remember when it used to be patriotic to invest in America. Every week at school we would by stamps for a savings bond book. When the book was full we got our savings bond.

I suspect it is less a bad investment choice by Obama, than a way to avoid conflicts in interest because of investments. Wouldn't it have been nice if Dick Cheney had not had a conflict in interest with Halliburton.

I quit watching this sh*t when I got tired of the rightwing, faux lite, attitude during the day. MSNBC has this clown along with Pat Buchanan with that worthless POS Joe Scarface to start the day and from there they invite rightwing sh*tbags to scream over anyone who they disagree with and never try to press for reality. The only shows worth watching were Keith (the reason I have not watched MSNBC at all), Rachel, and Lawrence O'Donnell. Ed is okay about most things but can go off the chart and Chris Matthews is like Newt as far as going with whichever way the wind blows. Anyone who invites Tom DeLay on regularly, and Chris has, is not worth watching.
