Chris Matthews Calls the Dow Jones Obama's Scorecard

Chris Matthews wants that stock market fixed, and right now, dammit!! I don't know what the hell is wrong with Matthews, but wasn't he just plugging Jonathan Alter's book not long ago? Does anyone think he read it after his little screed tonight on Hardball?
Matthews: Well we have macabre terms like zombie banks floating around. We've got problems already. I want to ask you when we get back, how does he deal with the fact that he has a scorecard right now? It's called the Dow Jones. And every day now, first of all they're going to nationalize the banks. Then they're not going to nationalize the banks. No matter what they say the Dow Jones keeps going down. It's down to almost 7000 now. I used to think 8000 was the floor. It's heading toward 6000! People are really getting angry! I'm getting angry!
People who have saved money who are facing retirement are ripped right now. It is absolutely disturbing to put it lightly what this must be saying to people who are retired now. They've got a nest egg, a 401K that's now a 101K. They are ripped. And I'm only saying it the nice way. They are really angry. And they're going to get mad a him if we don't get this market turned around.
We'll be right back with Howard Fineman and see how the President does with his scorecard, and Gene Robinson, can he deal with that Dow Jones scorecard every day in decline?
Hey Chris, I've got news for you. This is not going to turn around fast and if a recent poll by the New York Times and CBS News is any indication, most people don't expect it to either.
Where have you been while everything that Roosevelt put in place to prevent this from happening again was being dismantled? Where was your anger then? You're a day late and a dollar short with your faux, shortsighted outrage.
I'm angry too, but Barack Obama didn't cause this mess, so I'm not angry at him for not being able to fix it in a MONTH!! I'd suggest you go read Alter's book and take a chill pill. We've got a long haul ahead of us before this gets better.

He can see his millions draining down the insatiable Repug hole. He's 63 and sees it all slip sliding away. Of course he's mad.
... was Tweetyboy when the Dow tanked just about every time Bush opened his pie hole to say, "The economy is fundamentally sound."?
this fucktard goes from saying bush is great back in 2000 to when he saw that Obama was going to win in 2008, now Obama is good. I did not here one word from this asshole when bush lied the US into a war. when bush took a shit on America with All the lies. I just can't stand these fuckheads.
a reed in the wind...he bends in the direction the wind is blowing.
and he can bend over really far when he has to.
is still in the stock market? The only thing I care about is the DOLLAR -- as in Dollar vs. Euro. Which reminds me. The Dollar sure is a lot stronger now since the republicans were kicked out! Let's make sure we keep them out!
Thanks Chris - good indicator. I would add, when will Obama get around to raking the leaves in my yard! They pile up, keep my grass from growing, and look real bad. He's had over a month now - and the leaves are still there. Hey Barack...I'm waiting!
well, we've had a decline in the DOW of almost/over 1200pts in the last 10 days.
so much for that stimu-Less bullcrap.
Of course your consistently blind selective rage would cause you to omit that fact.
under Dubya and the complicit Democrats.
or did your blind selective rage omit that too?
hypocrite.
Get those rabies taken care of...Crazy bastard.
Washington could be on fire, California blown up, and the entire US in violent turmoil, and Dem supporters would still scream "Oh ya? Well when Bush was Prez...." These same blind supporters cry everytime Clinton's name is used to show that BOTH parties are guilty in this damn mess, even though it is all true. It's pretty sad really..
your going to have a hard time convincing people who vote that the government that their vote sanctions is a pile of shit.
They shou;ldn't need to be convinced. Can't they see it for themselves? If they can't... (well that's part of the problem)
Dummies! With a Capital D!
The problem is Tweety still has credibility. I can't figure out why. He's proven himself to be an incomprehensible hack asshole on many occasions. Still, a lot of people think he's a teevee 'journalist' and they still pay attention to him. I'm sure no one pays as much attention to him as he thinks he deserves.
By the way, Mr. President, when you are done with Taarak's leaves I have a couple of rooms that could use a new coat of paint.
..Morning Joe. People listen to him also and he has nothing to say worth a damn. Maybe its because he's on MSNBC that a lot of people believe he has credibility. How long would it be before KO would have him up on "Worst Person" honors if he was on FAUX?
do you expect him to correct this monumental clusterfuck left by bushco?
I bet you're the kind of person that stands in front of a microwave and screams HURRY!!!!
Give Obama a break, he's doing a pretty good job so far. But you can't possibly expect him or anyone else to be able to fix the economy in a fuckin month!
Funny you should make that "hurry" argument.
It's the same sales pitch used by Disaster Capitalism Obama for pushing the recent Spending bill through Congress
http://market-ticker.org/archives/825-So-What...
exactly what you and Tweety would be saying if Obama's plan had gone down in Congress and the Dow was below 6500?
be patient, its still heading there, or hadn't you noticed?
Where is your faith in Mr. N. Visible Hand?
Wasn't bushco's paulson screaming the sky was gonna fall if we didn't piss away 350 billion ASAP?
Don't even try to make this Obama's fault.
..we elected Jesus Christ not Barack Obama President. After all, expecting a turnaround in the DOW right now, only days after the Stim was signed, is like expecting a miracle and it ain't coming!
Really. It's already Tuesday and I'm not rich yet. What the hell is going on?
but its got a limp wrist from all that Republican twittering.
Just like Bush didn't have a "magic wand" to say "low gas" prices...
The economy is now international. No one gov't can fix it.
Chris wants someone to look at him. He wants to be relevant. He wants us to give a shit what he says about everything. He knows Rachel and Keith have the liberal market cornered so he's gonna go out there and swim back in the shallow end with the republicans for a while.
... Apparently are more intelligent and realistic than Tweety. So what else is new? The Dow Jones is Obama's scorecard? What ignorance of an extremely complex problem. This is not a baseball game, Matthews.
Exactly! We will fill out the President score card, not wall street. And from what I'm seeing, he's getting extra credit for effort.
It'll be nice tonight when President Obama (I still can't believe I can say that for real) speaks and we'll see only Biden and Nancy behind him....no cheney for the first time in eight years. :)
Is this the night for the "Mess of the Union" speech? Great.
...the man a chance. BTW Obama has an 80% approval rating in your country...concern yourself with that shit.
We must worship the Invisible Hand.

We must worship the Invisible Hand.
__________________________________________
Is there an invible penis that goes with that?
and we had an entire administration blame everything on it. Kind of devil worship.
Polls, polls everywhere are polls.....after one month, Obama's approval rating is at the exact same percentage as GW Bush....concern yourself with that shit.
WAIT A MINUTE! Both have the same policy of maintaining the fiction of Canadian Independence. Neither have done anything about relieving CC's tortured mind.
Nope, one is a half black politician, the other a halfwit politician, but both viewed with same approval after one month. That's amazing.
half white and the other half full of it.
....Obama now with Bush's approval rating after his first month in 2001?
It's simple...if a poll rejects Canuck's bullshit it's irrelevant, if another poll buttresses his nonsense, it's gospel.
Right now the Republicans are doing their damndest to pin the economy on Obama. They completely ignore the fact this president has been in office less than 2 months, nope that would too fair. They ignore the fact that this economy was on a disaster route when Bush was in office. By jumping in, like Matthews with his "scorecard", they can pretend that Obama not only created this mess but is unable to fix it.
at the dog track...
Where were all these fucktards when bush was fucking up America. Now there all out. go back in your hole. Give Obama a chance.
And give America a chance. Everyone is in this together and we could get out of it faster if republicans weren't intent on making it as difficult as possible....if not impossible.
Thanks POP. I have very low expectations that Obama will solve things. But we do need someone to lead, and he's as good as any of them.
Mathews is fixing to get angry?
Look at me everyone.
I'm shakin'.
Chris is a puzzle. (Or is that Putzel?) His thinking is streaky, like Phil Mickelson's golf game. He gets on a roll for a while, exposing the lies of the faux conservatives of the modern Republican party, then just as suddenly he loses his stream of thought and places blame where it is not due and gives credit to Republicans who don't deserve it. Whenever this happens, I take a deep breath, exhale slowly and chant "he's only an entertainer, he's only an entertainer. . . ."
I also have thought he's been on the sauce a few times...
Chris would run for the US Senate in PA. He would have had to give up his show. And then I would have liked to have a read Democrat kick his ass in the primary, on the way to winning the seat. By, by Chris.
Oh well...
Chris Matthews, and Fineman included, are hold-overs from a time when the MSM constantly told us that Demos and Progressive ideas couldn't do anything right. I've tuned these boys out a long time ago. They are angry and shallow Villagers.
To use the daily Dow as a indicator for long term strategy is like using today's weather report to determine the effects long term climate change. It's a time thing. Chris and the boys should have explained that, and they know it, but don't for some misguided reason as to score points with their pointless audience demographic.
Hell, just give Eugene Robinson is own show. MSNBC needs a smart person of color to brighten up its lineup.
Tweety's Hardball needs some Viagra-for-the-brain to "tone down" his Villager's tint hat Hard-on.
Screw the Dow, I need a job to pay my bills!
"Bounce or Trounce" Week
This is Chris Matthews since Inauguration Day: "Blah blah Rush Limbaugh blah blah FDR would do this blah blah." Seriously, he can't mention the economy without mentioning FDR-mind you, I don't think he UNDERSTANDS what FDR did-and he thought Rush Limbaugh was the bee's knees. When Contessa Brewer is a better journalist than you are, that's pretty damn sad.
Last week when the President went to Canada, Contessa was telling us that the President was returning from Canada and that he had a nice visit.... Trouble was he hadn't even left DC yet. The plane she was watching on the runway was his plane leaving DC, not returning.
And yet she actually has, more than once, called Republicans out on their bullshit. Which is more than Matthews does.
This morning Scarborough said both bushes had at one time 90 something percent approval ratings. I guess gw bush's must have been right after 9-11, but I couldn't remember when his dad's approval ratings were that high.
was that when bush had his [Deleted. That's what we consider more than a bit racist. Site Monitor] Prince over for dinner, saying "WE DID IT" think about it, 15 of the guys were saduies.
......the day after National Security Directive 54 was issued on January 15, 1991,
....is so full of hot air, he'll explode at any given time.
is the ashy residue of four or five different hair coloring products.
Obama chose to step in front of this train wreck and idiots like matthews act like he should be able to stop it on a dime. the stock market has been a runaway for years, its going to take time to stop it before it can be turned around. I believe in Obama, but I also know he's not superman.
Matthews only cares about his 401k dwindling and doesn't give a shit about anybody else, like all good Reslugs.
and no doubt his money is safely parked from the havoc.
Federal Reserve in in charge of the money(Private Banks)they will control every thing that happens. WTF. hell congress cant even audit the Fed Res.
I'll give Fineman credit for one thing. He gave up dying his hair that awful color and is letting the gray grow out naturally. It looks so much better.
A distinguished looking anus sphincter.
I'll bet even money what you call "natural" is yet another color choice by this indecisive vacillating scribe.
Do you mean to tell me the fucker's literate?
You tell me. I cancelled Newsweek when they hired Karl Rove
so I haven't seen Howie's purported written work lately.
Good point.
Living on spongecake
Matthews is pissed off that his investments probably lost about 40-50% in the last 6 months. Considering that he has probably lost many millions I can understand it. What I don't understand is this scorecard idea and Matthews not figuring out what economic policy got us here. It's pretty easy to do.
but he is losing at the other GE (Great Expectations). Write NBC and ask that rich anchors disclose their portfolio performance when commenting on Market and other religion news.
he privatised his social security payments into an account which was tied to the stock market? You know, the way W. promised would make everyone rich?
He's just cranky cause he has hard balls.
Chris' scorecard for success is incredibly narrow and ill-conceived. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a fine measure to show how the very richest are skimming off the top, but let's consider the broader definition of wealth as defined by Robert Kennedy thirty years ago:
"Too much and too long, we seem to have surrendered community excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our gross national product ... if we should judge America by that - counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for those who break them. It counts the destruction of our redwoods and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl. It counts napalm and the cost of a nuclear warhead, and armored cars for police who fight riots in our streets. It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.
"Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriage; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. And it tells us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans."
Archie Bunker was right: That's the grossest national product in the world.
I never tire of reading RFK. He was an inspiration to a greater number of people than he would ever know.
This is one of my favorite RFK quotes as it addresses our national priorities as they should be. Like you, I don't consider DJIA to be the bellwether of our nations economic condition, frankly it is too emotionally driven, volatile, and only a snapshot of the bigger economic picture.
Matthews needs to cool it and realize that getting pissed off is not a viable action plan. It will take years for people of conscience and honesty to rebuild what self centered and greedy people have torn down.
I will count you as a wise friend.
And they had to kill him...
All the good ones get taken from us...and the bad ones just stay around forever...
We have to stop measuring everything in dollars.
Do we really need to keep growing our economies endlessly? Is that what it's all about?
on Southpark?
Jesus?
How can anyone blame Obama for having to deal with the tsunami boosh released after just one month?
To this day they try to blame Clinton for 9-11, 9 months after he left and the recession that started a year and a half after he left.
damn dress in the closet unlaundered?
....the kiddie-porn.
but looks like Butters
of Mr. Hanky
.
...Chris is ignorant enough to look for the quick fix. It just adds to the overall frustration when irresonsible comments such as these are broadcast.
Take a chill pill, Chris. Wash it down with some Chevis or Grey Goose. It's gonna be alright.
I'd prefer Zwack Slivovitz.
Or even some Amantillado
(Goes great with Texas Fried Armadillo.)
to remove the shell, or just drop the whole shebang in the deepfryer and scoop out the meat?
Ooooh, my stomach doesn't feel so good right now. It has been offically grossed out.
Splatter it with a shotgun, or a semi, and turn it into hash.
both for pellets and critter shells. Plus with the semi there is the issue of fighting off those pesky vultures and dodging Dodges while harvesting.
The shotgun pellets, broken glass, and old spark plugs are prizes like you get in a box of Cracker Jacks.
To this day I never understood this scene:

Shouldn't they be hedgehogs?
and I will figure it all out and come up with a really immature answer.
Here's one:
They were carried to Transylvania by African laden swallows.
If you want to make a profit, kill the blood sucking middlemen.
The Texas version of "Why did the chicken cross the road?"
To prove to the armadillo it could be done. LOL
That would explain why we have so many fried chicken franchises in Texas.
It can't be done. LOL At least, not in Texas.
to hunt from our pick-ups. It's just more fun that way.
Well it's time for me to get ready to go to the VA hosptial for another check-up.
I swear I've been fingered and probed more times than an ingenue who won the Woody Award.
Can y'all believe they now have porno blooper reels?
Please, get your pretensions right...
waiting for the world to change.
.
PRINCETON, NJ -- President Barack Obama remains highly popular among the U.S. public at the end of his first month in office. However, the 63% of Americans currently approving of his job performance is down slightly from his initial 68% rating in January. The percentage disapproving has doubled, from 12% to 24%.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/116026/Assessing-O...
And you'll notice, his approval percentage is identical to GW Bush, but his disapproval is higher.
In other news, a recent poll determined that 90% of all polls are made up and artificial.
Americans follow in the polls.
anyone have been disapproving of Dubya in February of 2001?
He inherited relative peace, the economy had not tanked yet, and he hadn't had time to start any wars or say too many stupid things?
Plus, if you think/say that polls are made up and artificial - why even use them as back-up when you make ridiculous comments??
This idiotic notion is something that the repugs created in the past eight years. The president is not in charge of the stock market. Having a president who concentrates only on the indicators like the stock market and unemployment and housing starts got us into this mess. The new president is focusing on saving our nation for the masses of people and not just those who are considered the investor class. Chris has been saying some stupid stuff recently.
Explain the Wall Street and Bank Bailouts if this president is focusing on something different than Bush did.
on the table approved for spending? Tweety would be pointing a gun at his own head instead of just screaming if Obama was not talking about using it? He is not interested in buying Canada just yet? Those good enough reasons for ya?
What is this obsession with Canada? Are Americans jealous that our banks/economy is not disintegrating at the same rate as yours? That we have healthcare? That we have the same, if not more rights, than you do without needing to arm ourselves and recite a "constitution" every three minutes? That we don't need to make up fake boogeymen arguments all the time?
Because others follow your politics, it is prudent to throw around "yep our nation is in trouble, but man it sucks to live in your country"? LMAO!
...and courage harboring fugitive slaves during that awful period in U.S. history. But to say that we "obsess" over your country is just some additional bullshit amongst the myriad of unfounded bullshit you have flooded this site with. Even your National sport would be nonexistent but not for the U.S. bankrolling your butts. Come on Canuck, you Habs know what our asses taste like.
besides I only mention Canada to keep you from getting homesick while you are down here solving our intractable
problems.
You don't have enough money to buy Canada. You'll have to invade.
(besides, it's kind of arrogant to say, don't you think?)
PS are you aware that US trade with Canada creates 7 million American jobs. Disparage a real enemy.

Obama's Moses now,
What happened, did he get demoted from messiah?
Bush.
Well if he had that, Michelle would kick him out of bed.
in the Lincoln bedroom.
They'd have plenty of logs.
jungle fever. And the ambiance drives the missus crazy.
In the Lincoln bedroom, would she get four scores?
Perhaps the trolls should watch The Ten Commandments to get a preview of their ultimate destiny.
Please remember that picking a president using “who would you rather have a beer with” is not a good decisive factor.
Don't you wish you could afford a beer or ten.
Primarily, because to really do so would cause unbearable pain to the oligarchic/plutocratic aristos.
They have the most to gain from the ensuing chaos of a real melt-down.
Depressions are the ways that the "owning" class retrieves its possessions from the poor and middle-classes who have been temporarily leasing them (under the illusion that they actually 'aowned' anything).
What would be the results if you cloned something from a mound of that?
Rich people can make money in one of 2 ways. They can make it by playing the stockmarket and driving up realestate; or, they can make it by hiring employees and running a business.
The first option is not looking so good these days.
That's the usual method.
I'd love to see Bubba's scorecard.
was up and down and Big Blue splattered.

of his shower too many mornings while wondering how he got home the night before. Besides, he can't see THE HAND for focus on the INVISIBLE FINGERTIPS.
at least you didn't say he was lying.
I at least got through the first minute or two.
The economy is much bigger than Chris can imagine. Stock prices are one indicator.
Average weekly hours, manufacturing
Average weekly initial claims for unemployment insurance
Manufacturers' new orders, consumer goods and materials
Vendor performance, slower deliveries diffusion index
Manufacturers' new orders, non-defense capital goods
Building permits, new private housing units
Money supply, M2
Yield curve aka interest rate spread
Consumer expectations
Help wanted advertising
Stock prices
Bond yields
The president has more to clean up than just Chris Matthews 401K or mine for that matter. This is the result of raygunomics.
they are only half of the economy. As Yogi Gramm said, the other 90% is mental.
The Stock Exchange is how our economy is measured by most Americans whether its correct or not. I think that's what Mathews meant.
Yse it is. I find that very sad; blinding even.
is a figurative term used by traders in the finance industry to describe a pattern wherein a spectacular decline in the price of a stock is immediately followed by a moderate and temporary rise before resuming its downward movement, with the connotation that the rise was not an indication of improving circumstances in the fundamentals of the stock.
Thank you for succinctly saying what I've been thinking for a while now! I almost choked on my dinner last night when he came up with that diatribe. My husband and I are a couple of those retirees who lost a great deal of our retirement fund over the last few months, but we're certainly not holding it against President Obama. We're putting the blame where it should be: on Bush and the doctrine he and his ilk espoused during the last 8 years.
When oh when, will Chris Matthews wake up and see things the way they REALLY are? Instead of living in the dated and outmoded quagmire of mumbled thought that he's entrenched himself, he'd better wake up SOON or he'll wish he had decided to run for the Senate after all because he'll discover no one's watching Hardball
anymore.
That's right. Tweety can say what he likes, but Americans saw their 401k before Obama was president and know this.
