I highly recommend watching the entire show if you have time which you can catch here if you don't have the show recorded at home, but here's one of the better portions of this Saturday's Up With Chris Hayes which followed their panel discussions which took at look back at the invasion of Iraq as the Status of Forces Agreement between the U.S. and Iraq ends today.

HAYES: Since we're taking a look at the legacy of the Iraq war today we thought we'd approach our now we know segment a little differently. One of the striking features of our tortured relationship with the war and it's aftermath is that as a byproduct of a kind of collective, social PTSD we simply no longer talk about Iraq very much at all. Because of this we've allowed so many of the key figures who engineered the war, sold the war and oversaw the bloody quagmire to escape the kind of public sanctions their failures merited.

So we thought as part of our looking the war squarely in the face it would be interesting to take a look at where some of the major and not so major players in our war effort and anti-war effort are now.

On Chris' list, Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Judith Miller, David Addington, Paul Wolfowitz, Cindy Sheehan, General Eric Shinseki, Ari Fleischer, Jessica Lynch, Ken Pollock, Scooter Libby, Doug Feith and Paul Bremer. Sadly as Chris noted here, no bad deed has gone unrewarded when it comes to this group, most of whom are now making a comfortable living at conservative think tanks and are sadly still allowed to come on television and are asked for their opinions.

I'm quite sure we'll never see a segment like this on Meet the Press since David Gregory wouldn't want any of them to fall off of his potential guest list.

Best line of the segment:

HAYES: Doug Feith, the Undersecretary of Defense, who Geneal Tommy Franks once called "the f-ing stupidest guy on the face of the earth," is advising Rick Perry on foreign policy.

And it is worth watching the look back at the highlights (lowlights?) of our fiasco in Iraq.

Is that perfect or what? Perry picks the "fu*king stupidest guy on the face of the earth to advise him on foreign policy. That sounds like something we would make up just for laughs....But it's real!!

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Terrible's picture

Gen. Tommy Franks is the guy who infamously claimed he had no idea the Iraqi's could take out helicopters with small arms fire despite the thousands of helicopters taken down with small arms fire during the Vietnam conflict.

Perry needs someone around him that make him seem more intelligent.

It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them.

"Where Are They Now?"

I sure wish they were in prison. They should be. But you know that.

Please contact MSNBC and tell them to put this show on at a later time. As it is is comes on at 5:00 am on Sunday and 4:00 am on Saturday on the west coast. Just ask them to put it on a few hours later. Thank you.

Captain Kangaroo's picture

For the record this is what I wrote them today.
Please put this show on at a later time so we on the west coast can see it at a descent time. 5:00 am Sunday is just too early and 4:00 am Saturday is out of the question. Thank you. This is very very serious because on Sunday we do not have a decent alternative to FOX and CNN*.

Any recommendation or praise from the likes of us, and they'd doubtless relegate him to the burnt-out TV set in the homeless camp in John Carpenter's They LIVE?... Current or Российское агентство международных новостей РИА Новости, sometime around 3:59 AM... in Uzbeki, Bekki, Bekkkistan already? http://www.bellinghamherald.com/2011/12/29/23...

The onliest way we'll get an inquisitive, balanced or journalistic voice on the TV; is some really screaming hot Al Jazeera or RT anchors who can shoot a re-curve bow with their hyper extended 40" gams, while in a contorted head-stand... or pole dancing stark naked aside from a burqa?

BEST! Would like it on later but they have to run those /\.criminal shows to pay the bills...

It will make into the prime market when they hear all the support!

If they move it to 10:00 AM EST...

"Brunch with Chris Hayes," maybe?

I bet Chris will have a better time slot very soon, hopefully a daily evening show.

I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...

Gene214's picture

Maybe they should get rid of all the prison porn they show in the evenings and give Chris Hayes a spot there. I think it would work fine.

they need some new episodes. Maybe some from some Club Fed to show the 99% that real crime does indeed pay...

documents back in the late 90's who also have had significant input/influence on our 'war' politics these last 15 years: John Bolton, William Bennett, Richard Perle, Bill Kristol, Jeb Bush, and my fav - Dick Cheney.

Some of these guys are still appearing and foaming at the mouth on Faux, others remain in the background.

ALL of them should be in jail!!!

I guess war is like a drug to these monsters. They murdered over a hundred thousand in their previous adventures now they want to kill millions apparently. These criminals are going to go down as the biggest mass murderers in human history. That is if there is any history after they get through.

Where are they now?? Let's see: The Hoover Institute, the Brookings Institute, The Heritage Institute, American Enterprise Institute, FOX. Yep, all grateful recipients of wingnut welfare. As for Bremer, he walked out of Iraq with a couple of suitcases of cash, which enables him to retire to a comfortable life painting pictures. Who says war crimes don't pay?

I love Christ, he is one of my favorites even when he is hosting for someone on MSNBC instead of having Hard Ball on twice they could give Christ one of those slots, don't you think? I am not in love with all that jail stuff that they now play for the week-end if they put some one up against CNN on the Week -End they could become the number one watch show.

Who ever is running NSNBC is not trying to make any smart moves in my opinion! They are not trying to be the Best and Lean Forward as far as they can go. The week shows have some really good ones starting with Beshir Christ Matthews (although he makes me angry at times), next Al Sharpton and it is all good from there.

Heard John Bolton on the radio yesterday.. he says we must bomb Iran ASAP.

HINT: Watch the value of the dollar. If it starts to fall... they will close the straights of Hormuz and the price of gas will skyrocket to $10 a gallon overnight.

The Banksters will (at any cost.. even world war) protect the Petro Dollar.

Jessica Lynch just this year finally graduated from college with a teaching degree. She still is in constant pain from back injuries and walks with a brace on her leg. She also still has PTSD nightmares. She does not speak openly of resentment for being used for propaganda by the government and the army. She if the only person on that list who has come through the war with goodness and grace.

KingCranky's picture

When she debunked the whole heroic persona, going down in a blaze of gunfire against her attackers, and dispelled that BS in front of Congress, no less, she showed true intestinal fortitude and guts, and that's exactly the type of personal qualities so desperately needed from our political and military leadership.

Jessica Lynch, an authentic role model.

there is a discussion of The Roberts Court and 'Justice'. If we had any shred of 'justice' in the country, all of those war criminals would have been locked away-or worse- forever. We reward the profane, the pondscum, the ulimate Crooks and Liars while we bring to ruin the good, lawabiding, the very people who deserve justice and get a shit sandwhich and a golden shower.

One of the striking features of our tortured relationship with the war and it's aftermath is that as a byproduct of a kind of collective, social PTSD we simply no longer talk about Iraq very much at all.

Who is this "We"? It's the MSM and their corporate owners who don't want to talk about it in the news. It's Washington, Obama and the Dems all looking forward that stopped talking about it and let every one roam free to paint in Vermont, for example. "We" does not mean you and me.

far left loon >.<

ignorance of RW talk radio and the 1000 think tank coordinated radio stations that did the heavy lifting in repeating the lies and to date have never been held responsible in any way for the lives lost and maimed or the trillions wasted.

not only that, many of our universities even support the RW blowhards by broadcasting sports on those stations- basically endorsing the global warming denial, racism, sexism, war selling, and partisan lies, totally contradicting their own mission statements. they need to look for alternatives before the next elections.

about Jessica Lynch going before Congress and actually telling about the bs propoganda of her being a 'female Rambo' and how that 'rescue' was staged and scared the shit out of those Iraqi doctors and nurses who were doing everything they could to help her.....

Colin Powell.

If there was any member of the Bush Jr/Cheney Administration whose doubts could have helped forestall or stop the Iraq invasion & occupation, it was Powell.

Instead, Powell showed far more loyalty to Bush Jr & Cheney than he did the Constitution which he swore to protect against enemies both foreign and domestic.

Powell's always done the "go along to get along" strategy to advance his career.

Powell's defenders try, unsuccessfully, to show how worried he was about his now debunked and discredited UN testimony about Saddam Hussein's nonexistent WsMD, by pointing out CIA Director George Tenet was sitting right behind Powell, at Powell's insistence.

Powell knew every single excuse given by the Bush Jr/Cheney Administration was a flat-out lie, he didn't care, he didn't think there would be any blowback from such a colossally self-inflicted fuckup, one of the absolute worst in US foreign policy history.

Powell deserves the title "War Criminal" as surely as any other member of the Bush Jr/Cheney regime, all his attempts at distancing himself from the teabagger Gods Bush Jr & Cheney should crash & burn from public ridicule and societal sanctions, such as shunning any more public relations attempts from the now permanently-disgraced MIC shill Colin Powell.

Unfortunately, not in jail. For some bizarre reason.

There was a wonderful display of some of J Paul Bremer's paintings of New England pastoral scenes displayed during a November exhibit in the lobby of the Halliburton Corp headquarters building. These valuable works of art were guarded by XE (Blackwater) employees armed with submachine pistols.
The showing was entitled "Art & Security-A Multi-media Event" and was seen by thousands of awed
associates and visitors. The sign-in/comment book has been classified "Top Secret-Crypto".

we needed no other reason to invade Iraq....than them shooting at our aircraft in the no fly zone..while we were enforcing the stipulations to the iraqi surrender from the pervious gulf war.

bush made that clear during his trip and speech to the UN.

end of story.
