Cheney Finds Lack of Decision on Troop Increases in Afghanistan "Inexcusable"

George Stephanopoulos just had to give Liz Cheney some more air time on his bobblehead show in another of his "fair and balanced" panels. Sorry Liz but what's "inexcusable" is your daddy helping to get us into this quagmire in the first place. I still want to know when she's signing up for the military if she wants to keep beating those war drums.
WILL: The danger is that the president is going to be seen as escalating this war. He’ll do it half-heartedly with his heart not in it, he will lose his party, and he’ll be supported by Republicans of the stripe of Liz Cheney, and that’s not a sustainable path.
CHENEY: Well, let me just say that what I will support is the strategy that actually will win in Afghanistan, a strategy that’s the one that was laid out by General McChrystal, and I think it’s just completely inexcusable that we’ve now had month after month after month of photo-op out of the White House and no decision.
The president is very fond of saying, “Before I commit troops, I’m going to think very carefully about it.” Somebody in the White House needs to remind him: He’s already committed troops. We’ve got American men and women in Afghanistan today, because we’ve got to prevent Afghanistan from again becoming a safe haven for Al Qaida. The cost of walking away, the cost of defeat, the cost of retreat is huge. They’re fighting there today, and they’re fighting without the kind of resources and reinforcements that he needs -- that they need.

the harm done to our troops was sending them there in the first place. Catching Bin Laden was almost achieved in '02. But it probably could have been accomplished by offering a big enough Reward. Even if we offered a Billion $$$ it would have been cheap at two-hundred times the price. And a million people would still be alive.

It never seemed to be an operation for guys from Padunk IA, but special operations of some sort to flush out OBL. The Taliban were between a rock and a hard-place at the time.
After only a few operations, the mission to capture OBL was outsourced to local warlords, and OBL escaped at Tora Bora.
Now we have a weak government in the place, falling weaker on a daily basis, primarily because booshco wanted to support a fellow oilman in Hamid Karzai.
So even if we were to win a few battles, there's no one to hand the country over to, which is a long shot since Aghanistan has been known as a cemetery for everyone like England and Russia.
So if we send any fresh troops over it would be to help everyone leave, and let the blame fall where it belongs.

In Vietnam, the US basically took the place of France, or the ideology of the French- free market, colonialism, yadda yadda.
Afghanistan is a lot different. It went from being a Soviet-friendly buffer state to a Soviet client state with a series of purges by a Communist PM who the Soviets didn't trust- all in the span of five or six years. The Soviets went in to replace that PM; Afghans feared that their country was going to become another SSR. The US, otoh, did nothing while the Taliban "purified" Afghanistan, and only got involved for punitive reasons, with a legitimate casus belli (and, sorry, I don't buy the pipeline argument- Gazprom and Unocal pulled out in '98, and the UK venture is stalled, and even if the Taliban is ultimately defeated, there will always be warlords holding hostage any version of TAPI).
I think that if there's a similarity anywhere, it concerns the ways in which the US fought in Vietnam and the way the Soviets fought in Afghanistan: With tactics not suited for the territory, and with draftees who didn't ever want to be in those countries.
