Cast of Morning Joe Can't Name Successful Unionized Company Even Though They Work for One
By Heather Wednesday Jun 03, 2009 5:30pm
The cast of Morning Joe while fear mongering about the EFCA can't manage to name a single successful unionized company, even though they work for one. Media Matters and TPM are already all over this one. Jamison Foser at Media Matters:
The Morning Joe crew was on an anti-union tear this morning, claiming the union label on a company means "sell." Mika Brzezinski went so far as to say of unions: "They cripple the system that makes a company work." Collectively, the journalists on Morning Joe couldn't name a single "successful" unionized company.
.....
Oh, what the heck, let's take one more example. GE is one of the world's largest companies; in 2006, its revenues were greater than the gross domestic products of 80 percent of UN nations. The company made more than $18 billion in 2008 -- again, billion with a b, and again, those are profits, not revenue. All that despite (or, perhaps, because of) the fact that 13 different unions represent GE workers.
Or is it possible that the anti-union rants from Morning Joe journalists has something to do with the fact that members of the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians-CWA union have protested NBC-Universal?
TPM has a response from James Hoffa.
Unions are aghast. "Sorkin and the Morning Joe crew just showed their complete failure to understand how unions contribute to the success of the American economy by blindly assuming that unionized companies haven't been profitable in the last year," said James Hoffa, General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, in a statement to TPMDC.
As both sites noted, Andrew Ross Sorkin is also the one who started the $70 per hour auto worker media myth.
TPM has asked their readers to help compile a list of successful union companies if anyone would care to join in here. The Sorkin List: Successful Unionized Companies

They get paid way to much for the lies they tell.
I never watch morning shit head or any of the so called TV news.
They have nothing of any benefit for listeners and I don't know why anyone would bother.
republicanism is a mental illness and these people are living proof!
I have three post graduate degrees. And I'm union. AFT. College professor.
And I agree. Rachel Maddow, a Rhodes Fucking Scholar, is a dumbshit.
Wait. Rewind. Reverse tape.
I will use my enormous, well-trained brain to give you cancer. And I will bear Rachel Maddow's children, like a magnificent cuddly teddy bear sea horse. Arrrooooo! (That's the sound of a magnificent cuddly teddy bear sea horse.)
LOL...
I think she's very intelligent, goofy as hell, sure, but sharp as a tack.
This show is an embarassment to the other projraming on MSNBC. Ship the damn show to Faux.
during the era of unions in the 20th century, we saw the greatest growth in our country. during the two eras that bookend this time, we had the Gilded Age and post Reagan greed where over the last 3 decades, working people have seen their incomes stagnate or go down, and CEO salaries skyrocket. All while our jobs were outsourced. For those working folks that loves them some rich big businessmen, I have to ask them: why?
anyone that does not think unions are a good thing are wrong. end of story.

Charge?
How dipshits like this get on t.v. says alot about America. Welcome to our nation of dumbass/
if the union folk at MSNBC decided to make a point -
something likesay the lights and sound crapping out on his show...
The people operating the camera are union, the editors are union, the director and producers are union, the lighting and electric are union. Most likely these TV personalities have to be members of AFTRA or some other union to be on TV.
I work for a CBS O&O (owned & operated), and, well - the Morning Joe crew clearly doesn't know up from down.
Photographers are union; studio cameras are now remotely operated, but still under union jurisdiction; editors and studio crew are union; depending on the shop, writers, producers, even production assistants may be covered by collective bargaining agreements.
And talent is usually AFTRA or SAG.
Let's not forget - the weekend and the eight-hour work day are the byproducts of the union.
Heather, I have to disagree. How can NBC be considered a successful company if it must rely on such ignorami as these for on-air "talent"?
Truly pathetic.
Daddy Brezinski summed up Morning Joe exactly a while back...turns out that applies across the board.
I'm stickin' with Imus.
is this clown Cramer on TV? If I were as incompetent as him, I would be fired from my union job.
That idiot needs to be taken off the airwaves!
that's what the financial elites/corporations have been pushing or the last 20-30 yrs. they hate labor cost and at any opportunity will blame labor for faults. i basically stopped watching/listening to cNBC. they have NOT only bashing obama but they have been less than truthful/accurate regarding the unions during the automaker bankruptcies. corporations are global NOW. they look for demographics that offer low wages with infrastructure. they have been attacking the american worker in my opinion in the name/game of Darwinian Capitalism. when unions strike in this country the global corporations just INCREASE production at one of their other global plants. they have taken away the union power. they have also used "cheap labor" to undercut organized labor. the paradigm has been borrow to the middleclass instead of bargain. this brings wages down in most cases and work hours up.
free market success,Off shore sweatshop labor that can legally put "Made in USA" on it's goods. And evidently the reason the last Repub. Gov. of Alsaka was removed from office and bimbo barbie Palin was installed.
This is what the reptiles want for America everyone working for sweatshop wages,What our relatives died fighting for these island so the reptiles could get almost free labor

From Village Voice:
Barrett: Why Don't MSNBCers Question "Morning Joe" About Abortion Doc Killings?
Wow ..
Rachel last night had on as a guest a friend of Dr. Tiller, a physician who operates a clinic in Boulder. The previous night he was on CNN and named William Saletan of Slate, Ellen Goodman, and Chris Matthews of MSNBC as three mainstream journalists who used the same language as pro-life extremists in covering women's reporductive issues. This did not come up on Rachel's show nor in any blog on this site.
Dr. Warren Hern speaks out on AC360
DOH!!
One benefit of Unions is that an individual worker has a powerful avenue to out Managerial malfeasance or general unethical behavior.
Was Countrywide unionized..No.
Ware Lehman Brother or Bear Stearns unionized...No.
Was Blackwater unionized..No.
Was Indymac unionized..No.
I'm sure the list of failed non-Union corporations DWARFS the list of failed union corporations by a magnitude of 1000's.
but was Enron unionized?
Nope...nor was Arthur Anderson
Just a perfect example of how frozen minds work. They want to push their perfect point so badly that they deny the obvious! The dumbness mob just doing their high paid job.

And so is Caterpillar

Now, if someone should point that out... and also point out how Cramer who is an analyst and gives other people analysis... how he did not know those two very basic tid bits of information... about two of America's largest industrial companies. That by itself would made a simple analyst getting fired in two seconds flat, followed by his manager because the people up top did not want to have some dubmass that hired the other monumental moron (Cramer) working for their company.
We're in the twilight zone, where the f*cking dumbasses have managed to get hold of a secret weapon, and they are using it to reverse evolution... it seems it is working, because the dumb cretins are meeting and breeding... outpacing the expansion of the better genes among the pool.
God help us....
They are anti-union therefore they will be dishonest about success and unionized corporations. Republicans are dishonest people. They cannot be honest or they would not be taken seriously. They lie to get people to believe them.
Cramer just comes across as a slimly smarmy used car salesman. I am especially surprised he has the nerve to show his face in public after the shellacking Jon Stewart gave him. Is the FCC investigating him?
I don't think it's a coincidence that Morning Joe is sponsored by Starbucks (notice what they are drinking every morning) and that anti-union propaganda surfaces here.
Starsbucks has a history of union busting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L58EKo9XYiE
Just what is the appeal to these cable companies like MSNBC to hire idiots anyway?
was not only a union member, he was PRESIDENT of the Screen Actor's Guild until he pussed out and ratted on all his friends.
PS: I just thought of something; all those trolls (including man-on-dog sex afficionado Rick Santorum) are whining about Obama taking his wife to a Broadway play. Didn't their favorite hero, Lincoln, take in a lot of plays? In fact, WAS SHOT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD WHILE ATTENDING ONE!!!
IOKIYAR
All of WallStreet is not unionized, and they lost orders of magnitude more money than the big 3 combined.
So by their faulty logic....
I don't know what I'd do if I didn't get my daily dose of anti worker propaganda.
He can't recall a successful unionized company because he recalls only too well, his agenda.
We don't have disinterested people covering the news anymore. We have people cherry-picking news to support an agenda. More so than Joe, Fox News is pure white-wing agenda. Much of the rest of the news is corporate agenda.
Are these on air performers not covered by AFTRA or SAG? I see someone beat me to it, but if they are not, then the union needs to close down the shop to protect real performers and discourage scabs.
Where is my union when it counts?
I would say... UPS a.k.a. "United Parcel Service", Inc. is successful.

Edited: Heather... I had not checked out your link until after posting this comment. :-/ As a former [feeder] driver... That's the big trucks FYI vs the package car drivers a.k.a. [Brownies]... yes I'd say they are successful. Did it mention Coca-Cola®, I believe they have a large union component?

every morning I hear what this drivel has to say as I am drinking my coffee(not starbucks), then I head to my delivery room and produce a few brown bambini de plopus excreto. Morning Joe leads the way, next comes Mika, then Cramer and I christen them with union made toilet paper and flush them on their way to join the rest of the turds who populate this world with their stupidity.
By the way LET'S BOYCOTT STARBUCKS..wouldn't be hard for me I've never been there, though I might have bought some in grocery store. I'm sure there are other coffee shops who will be more than happy to take your $4 or $5 for a cup of coffee LOL
Regarding Starbuck's decision ................ well, it is one of the most insane
corporate decisions made and that is something something!
All of the panelists on this show have been drinking Starbuck's products for a long time
and giving the company, FREE ADVERTISING.
The company should have simply help back and enjoyed the freebie but some numbnut
in the corporation chose to put their LOGO on this ridiculous show which will
only bring in corporate losses.
Go Figure.
You should check out the Starbuck website.
Too funny.
The CEO of Starbucks, whose name escapes me at the moment, actually did a segment on the Scar's stupid show this week - maybe on Tuesday. He's a Repug through 'n' through.
I've actually never been in a Starbucks - I can't imagine that the coffee they make is worth $5 a pop, but I'm guessing they'll be going down the tubes even more than they already have as the
engineered financial meltdown continues.
If one adds the IQ's of Cramer, Mika, Scar and Willy - you wouldn't end up with enough to buy a cup o starbucks.
I would also add that Mike Barnicle's comment about unions was pretty right-on....the actual members (workers) are being screwed by the very corrupt union leaders....kinda like Americans get a bad rap because of the stupid politicians running our government
Anyone have any ideas for clearing that image out of my mind???
But I'm relieved that there are other people besides my husband who routinely name their turds after "personalities"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHXaEpUwt0s
Just goes to show, how the media, along with the rest of the country discount the value of a strong manufacturing base, and Kow Tow to the financial industry.
Mornin Schmoe for shillin Starbucks crap coffee?
brought to you by Starbucks. Zbig wishes he had a daughter.
I actually just graduated with a degree in Management, and as part of my last semester I took a grad level class with a campus chair of excellence on Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations. This means that I have probably researched and written more on unions in the last few months than the cast of this show has in their collective lives.
With qualifications out of the way, let me begin by saying that while the EFCA isn't perfect, discounting the impact of unions on our society falls somewhere between naive and stupid. Unions are responsible for getting many changes that have favored the common worker. Everything from a 40 hr work week to OSHA and workplace safety owe something to the early unions that fought to get those rules on the books. Ironically, it is these very laws that ultimately reduced the power of unions to their current state (12% of all American workers are currently unionized). The early unions did such a good job convincing politicians to write good policies into law, that modern day unions generally only have a few issues such as wages, health care, and employee grievances to address.
For anyone that doubts the role of unions in business history, I encourage you to read up on the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire or the Ludlow Massacre. Also, anyone making a claim about UAW's outrageous contracts should remember one simple fact: management at the auto factories had to agree to that contract. How can you claim that these unions are abusing management when the contracts were agreed to by management officials that theoretically should have had a better education and understanding of the contract terms.
I do have my issues with two provisions of the EFCA:
1. Elimination of secret ballot elections with signed cards gives me pause, because there is no mechanism to patrol what methods union officials can use to get those cards signed.
2. Forced arbitration on a first contract could result in some businesses signing contracts they don't agree with.
As such, I will never stop someone from arguing the relative merits of the new law, but that's not what the crew of this show set out to do. Like many in the media, they used inaccurate and sensational broad generalizations to demonize a law that I doubt any of them have even read and comprehended.
To add to the list of successful industries that are unionized:
The NEA is one of the largest unions still in operation in the country. So you could add virtually any educational institution in America.
TY
liberalmind. :)
What do you imagine "union officials" would do? Would it be worse then what the Companies do? I'm curious???????????
Ever heard of IATSE? The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees?
Almost everything in movie theatres and on TV is produced by members of this union.
I would say that's a modest level of success.
The only thing that America should and does fear is Reslug Domestic Terrorists.
I believe that a Starbucks screw up inflicted a costly blow too Pepsi's a.k.a. Pepsico's balance sheet awhile back.
"Tazo's RTD line will be integrated into the Pepsi/Lipton Tea
Partnership (PLP), expanding the joint venture between PepsiCo and
Unilever. Established in 1991, the PLP is the leading distributor of
RTD tea products in the U.S."... it's not who ya know, yes it is. ;)
