This is the claptrap we're going to be hearing from the corporate media and Republicans for the next two years if the Republicans do make the gains everyone is predicting in the mid-term elections -- will Obama be able to "move to the center?", as though he's not there already.

Obama will never be far enough to the right to suit them unless he changed parties and put an "R" behind his name and even then it probably wouldn't matter. Given the level of obstruction we've seen from Republicans during the last two years I shudder to think how much worse it's going to get if they do manage to get control back of either the House or the Senate.

These guys are just dying to demand that the President yields to a right wing agenda in the name of bipartisanship. I await the coming hissy fits that are sure to follow if he doesn't.

people despise the supposed "center" that being where the vast majority of most people are comfortable and where a president, if he wishes to have success in advancing his agenda needs to be.

exactly he can't move to the center if he's already there, what more do these rightwingers want.

Peter G's picture

They want him to move far to the right. They have claimed that as the center of political gravity but it most assuredly is not. I wish them luck. The results of your forthcoming elections will make for a fascinating political situation. I think the Republicans, if they regain either house, will be content with perpetual deadlock. That serves their interests and their goals best.

"supposed center"

Which is actually very right wing by international standards.

If you mean Europe you are partially correct. Europe is infested with right wing parties that have had varying degrees of success. By the standards of Asia you are positively socialist.

By international standards we are a war mongering rogue nation. The other day a supposedly educated doctor asked me what we should do about Iran. I responded that the real question is what should the rest of the civilized world "do" about us? I think I put the zap on him pretty hard. It was a bit more than he could handle. Now he just looks at me like I'm a five legged goat. It puts a smile on my face.

Any time you want to shut these maroons up, just ask them to name ONE left wing action president Obama has taken since he was elected. Just one. They absolutely cannot name one. They will blather on about liberal this and socialist that, but it's all bullshit.

You will not get an answer just name calling. They are programmed by fixed news to assume just because someone has a D next to their name they are by default liberal. Obama is far from liberal a little too centrist for my taste. I know a president shouldn't be too ideologically divisive (see: Bush, George W.) but as long as liberals are thrown at least some scraps and a bone every now and then and not disrespected (see: Gibbs, Robert) and taken for granted i'm ok.

Peter G's picture

Although I'm surprised no one would have cited his Supreme Court nominations as evidence of his raging socialist tendencies. Two apprently left leaning women? How Marxist is that?

Obama is already governing from the "center", if he moved any further to the right he might as well change parties and become a republican. How come no one asked Bush to move to the center? He governed from the far right.

DrDick's picture

Actually he is governing from the center-right. the bulk of the American public (60-70%) is well to the left of him.

deistpaladin2's picture

...after the 2006 elections that Bush needed to "move to the center". Funny that. Yet even after such a mandate from the public, the media spun it as a "call for bipartisanship". "Bipartisanship" seems to be Republicans lead and Democrats follow. There was no move to the center nor was there any demands to do so. Bush continued to be far right and congress continued to cave to all of his demands.

DrDick's picture

Well if he does, Hume won't like it since Obama would have to move well to the left if he is to get anywhere near the actual center of the what Americans desire in terms of policy.

Ape-Man's picture

What a Blockhead!

I mean come on!

HUME is the brain dead zombie in the bubble!

Ooozing denial.

The majority of Americans want President Obama to move left, with enough of an edge to make it a mandate.

Mr. Deadpan only wishes.

Nice guy though, probably.

three steps to the right of where the center was the year before. Repubs and pundits move it, and Dems follow.

Was the last socialist president America had. Obama is a republican with a "D" after his name.

...And you would replace him with whom?

I dunno.... Dennis Kucinich, Alan Grayson, Bernie Sanders, Sherrod Brown, Marcie Kaptur, ME!

at gunpoint. None of them stand a chance of being elected to that office. More's the pity. I like Bernie and Dennis. Hell I like all of them.

Hasa Diga Eebowai

Phylter's picture

And that's why it won't happen. The majority of Americans are fucking stupid. They'll keep listening to the bullshit and voting against their best interests, OR supporting the liars.

Trantorian's picture

There is some serious message control being exerted by the corporate conrolled MSM. And some serious money behind it. Mass social manipulation via different media, from scripture to cable TV, goes back many generations.

- The Democrats need to move to the *center.*

- Republicans are crazy.

- Some policy (usually the occupation of Afghanistan) is bad, but it can't be changed.

"and voting against their best interests"

That happens everywhere. Not an American thing i'm afraid.

Maybe so Alerta Alerta , but no where are they more blatantly voting against their own best interests than here when they vote Reich wing / Republican .

Everybody said a black man couldn't get elected in our lifetime either. So I wouldn't count anyone out, who is willing to sell their souls to the corporate fascists' who own this country.

But then, what would be the point of electing them if they did.

a type of reverse psychology? subliminal suggestion?

or just plain ol' lying, and repeat the lie often...?

surely they don't really believe it, facts being available even to them... eh?

or maybe just pure showmanship... playin' to the audience...whatever, the motive is just plain evil.

Ape-Man's picture

Yep. you nailed it.

I've often wondered how it feels...

how does it feel Hume?

Who died and made them king? It's good to know what these fools say, but it is not wise to accommodate or adapt their views, I mean in general. It shouldn't take "balls" for Obama to be a good Democrat, it should just be a normal thing, jeez.

DirtyHippieLibrul's picture

Agreed. But these days being a good democrat means seeing just how far to the right you can go and even then it won't be good enough for the right cause you have a D next to your name. Call it wishful thinking , but I think Obama might move a little leftward now that Rham isn't going to be in his ear anymore.

reluctant leader's picture

Obama needs to move TO THE LEFT, which is where his base, and the majority of Democrats, resides.

He can only find safety in liberalism. The conservatives will continue to feed him to the wolves.

Evet's picture

“change we can believe in” keeping in mind though that change is constant and something that always happens regardless if someone else claims they are going to do it for you. The only one who can control the future of your own circumstances is yourself. Haphazardly throwing your faith into the hands of someone else has its appeal, but seriously while your young, your best bet is to prepare for the future now so you don’t end up being a victim of it.

Alerta_Alerta's picture

If Obama moves to the so called "center" (read: right) even more he removes himself from the left paradigm.

If Obama went any further right, he would practically be a tea bagger.

Then the republicans could come out of their nazi closets and wear the full apparrel of the Third Reich in public - those snappy SS uniforms would go great with Boners tan and McConnell's Dracula complection.

"I await the coming hissy fits that are sure to follow if he doesn't".

"If he doesn't". Not quite a full throated endorsement of man or party, is it?

Yet there's no doubt about it. If Obama mustered the guts to bare-knuckle fight Goose Steppers Inc., the country would be better place.

And if I had wings, then I could fly (I know where I would go)....

Don't hold your breath, Heather. The man honestly believes the GOP is an honorable opposition.

well to the right before Obama ever set foot in the WH. I too am still waiting for Obama to move more to the left, which would actually be to the center. Fox (and the Republicans) believe if they repeat a lie often enough, it will stick or become reality.

Avedon's picture

Obama would have to move well to the left in order to meet up with the real center, where most Americans reside.

More liberal media at The Sideshow.

ktpinnacle's picture

They have so controlled the message that if Obama moves one step to the left from his centrist position, he will be demonized as the most leftist president ever, the end of the country. And those insane folks on the right will become even more radicalized. If he stays where he is or moves to the right, they will still say he is too liberal. Reality has nothing to do with it.

ekees's picture

I'd love for him to move towards the Center... Away from his far right Bush policies that he has continued and moved to the right of the "Bush war on terror."

The fact is that we have a right wing government... Congress and the White House. The People are very much center LEFT.
