Here's one for the memory banks from Bill Moyers Journal, September 2008, talking about the rise of hate talk on right wing radio, and Glenn Beck saying he'd like to kill Michael Moore along with some other right wing screechers doing their best to incite violence in the name of keeping their ratings up.
RICK KARR: Michael Savage isn't the only right-wing talk-radio host who launches blistering, even violent, verbal attacks on people and groups he doesn't like. Glenn Beck, for instance, fantasized about murdering a liberal filmmaker.
GLENN BECK: "I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out of him. Is this wrong?"
RICK KARR: Michael Reagan, son of the former president, suggested that people who claim that "nine-eleven was an inside job," a U.S. government conspiracy, deserve to die.
MICHAEL REAGAN: "Take them out and shoot them. They are traitors to this country, and shoot them. But anybody who would do that doesn't deserve to live. You shoot them. You call them traitors, that's what they are, and you shoot them dead. I'll pay for the bullet."
RICK KARR: Neal Boortz went after victims of Hurricane Katrina.
NEAL BOORTZ:"That wasn't the cries of the downtrodden. That's the cries of the useless, the worthless. New Orleans was a welfare city, a city of parasites, a city of people who could not, and had no desire to fend for themselves. You have a hurricane descending on them and they sit on their fat asses and wait for somebody else to come rescue them."
RICK KARR: Muslims are some of Boortz's favorite targets.
NEAL BOORTZ:"It's Ramadan and Muslims in your workplace might be offended if they see you eating at your desk. Why? I guess it's because Muslims don't eat during the day during Ramadan. They fast during the day and eat at night. Sorta like cockroaches."
RICK KARR: Reverend Chris Buice says he's heard that kind of language before.
REVEREND CHRIS BUICE: If you look at the history of like situations like in Rwanda in 1994, the talk radio was a big part of leading to the conditions that created a genocide. The Hutu radio disc jockeys would call the Tutsi cockroaches. There's the sense that these aren't human beings. You know, they're not human beings with children or grandchildren. These are cockroaches. And when you hear in talk radio that liberals are evil, that they are traitors, that they are godless, that they are on the side of the terrorist. That's hate language. You don't negotiate with evil people. You don't live in community with people you consider to be traitors.
RICK KARR: Millions of Americans tune in to right-wing talk radio every day. Rory O'Connor is a media critic and a liberal himself who's written a book on shock-talkers. He says not all of these broadcasters use violent language. But they do all share a predilection for outrage and, he says, they're all practically addicted to constantly cranking up that outrage.
RORY O'CONNOR: Here's the real problem. When you shock somebody, if you come back the next time and you apply the same stimulus, it's not shocking any longer. It's already happened. So you have to ratchet it up a little bit. So how do you cut through? How do you really shock? I think that in order to continue to outrage, you have to constantly be jacking up the pressure. And ultimately, there's gonna be some deranged person out there in that audience who's gonna say, "You know what? That's a good idea. Let me act on that."
GLENN BECK:"The fusion of entertainment and enlightenment."
RICK KARR: Entertainers — that's what a lot of the shock-talkers call themselves. O'Connor says, maybe. But their words can motivate their listeners to act.
RORY O'CONNOR: Now first and foremost, we have to recognize that many of them are employed across multiple platforms. So they may say something on their radio show, but they may repeat it on their television show. They may then repeat it in their newspaper column. They may repackage the ideas into their best-selling books.
Keith Olbermann said he was looking for everything anyone can find on Glenn Beck. Maybe this one makes the list on his show this week.

Obviously, Obama can't crack down on free speech or publicly call out his detractors.
But the FCC, the FTC and the DOJ were each created to protect the American public from being taken advantage of.
When Fox bills itself as "news," that's false advertising, because that's not what they're selling.
When Glenn Beck publicly threatens to murder someone, that's a death threat. You or I would go to jail for that.
When a huge corporation uses the TAXPAYER-OWNED airwaves 100% for its own profit interests, that's theft of our natural resources.
These government agencies are shirking their responsibilities.
The FCC can demand Fox News use 50% of its airtime for local news, for educational programs, or for children's programming if they want to.
They can bring back the Fairness Doctrine, and demand that they are TRULY "fair and balanced."
The FTC can gut Fox News' ad revenue by banning big pharma ads.
The DOJ can use the Monopoly laws on the books to break up Fox and GE and the other conglomerates.
I can think of a million ways to send Rupert Murdoch packing. It's time the U.S. Government started putting U.S. interests before multi-national conglomerates' profit motives.

I think KO should start a nightly segment wherein he plays past and current Beck clips of him spewing hate. These should be interspersed with hate messages coming from other reichwingers.
I just sent the Mayor of Mt. Vernon, Washington an email about Beck (Beck's home town). They're giving him the key to the city.
I pointed out several examples to the Mayor of Beck's hate speech. I let him know about the musings of Beck over killing Michael Moore; I let him know about his "joking" of poisoning Nancy Pelosi just a month or so ago.
I pointed out a number of other hate messages coming from Beck, and I asked the mayor if he was proud of this. I asked him, since when has it become acceptable in this country to openly talk about killing people.

I guess he thinks if he attacks her, she and Obama will have to get a divorce. Then he can talk about what a horrible family man Obama is.

Tonight Beck is going after some guy who introduced Van Jones at some meeting. Last week Beck told his audience questions they should ask of the white house. This week he is saying that his audience asked the questions. He doesn't mention that he fed them the questions. He seems to be trying to say if anything happens it will be because the people were questioning the white house, not he himself. Already he is trying to disengage himself from the trouble he is causing.
Beck is the worst.

sitting at work yesterday eating my lunch in the break room (I work for an HCA hospital and we have basic, crappy cable) and I think it was the HLN channel. The story was about a young kid who had killed himself because his classmates made fun of him, some of them wrote letters to his mother after he died talking about how they were sorry for making fun of him and calling him "gay." And, as I was sitting there I thought about how assholes like Beck work, every day, to desensitize the viewers and dehumanize whomever is the target for the day. Calling him/her names, saying vicious things about the person, and even in the case above talking about killing someone. No wonder kids are so f'd up and mean.
I only have one simple question...WHY aren't these people in jail?? Why have they not been treated as the swine they are...We don't need rabid dog meat thrown all over the place by the folks...Send them to a permanent KKK meeting in South Texas and be done with it.

The only thing that bugs me is even giving this guy (Beck) attention in this way (compiling info on him). Why do we care what he's doing? Why does MSNBC cover those guys every night, in addition to whatever Sarah Palin is doing? I don't give a hoot about them. I think it would be better for somebody to compile the list of sponsors on Faux and to the best of our abilities we boycott them. Also, if we stay focused on making positive change in the country and supporting those who we elected, the Hutu DJs will eventually be cancelled. I know it sounds like a pipe dream. Perhaps it is. I just hate to turn into THEM.

For some odd reason Right wingers have this opinion that Liberals or leftists are unwilling or unable to defend themselves.
This is a terrible assumption that for some may have dire consequences. As a former raging alcoholic during my fifty years of life I have bounced in some of the toughest bars in the country for part time money and when not bouncing am always called on to play enforcer and mop up loud mouth drunks. Usually white, beer drinking, uneducated racist twenty-somethings better at beating their women than the meekest of men. I do not advocate violence and am a peaceful man and although, I am well armed I prefer to use my hands specializing, in one punch knock-outs for which I am not very proud but, have honed for my own protection. Real fights are not like in the movies and seldom last beyond fifteen seconds.
I gladly welcome Boortz, Beck and Reagan 3 on 1 to an anytime, anyplace kick the shit out of the anti-American bash-a-thon. I will play the role of the anti-American, pay for my own flight arrangements (their's too) and bet anyone here that I can take care of all three in 5 punches or less.

I am 60, have never been an alcoholic, have done security but never bounced, and haven't been back to Vietnam since 1970. I want them one at a time, don't care about the order. We can make it a series of charity events, give the money to homeless shelters in the home cities of each of these jerks who think they're ba-ad enough to call down violence, even murder, on others. Beck rhetorically asks us "is that wrong?" Yes, Glenn, it is. I would love to make you pay for saying it, but the charitable back-end should begin to make up for the obscenity that you and your colleagues trade in for your livings.
Then after I whup them one at a time, you, as a professional, can whup them as a unit. Down Side: will that enhance their smarmy public profiles? I suggest, no. Once they have been left bleeding in the ring, it will be (as it always is after boxing matches) the winner who gets to talk, and I will attempt to heal the wounds that these three cause in American society. I'm not saying America will listen to a message of hope and reconciliation-- as one poster put it, we are conditioned to react to greater and greater "shocks" from these shock jocks-- but it would be better than these three shooting off their dirty mouths. Besides, if their jaws are wired shut from being broken, none of them will be able to talk intelligibly for a couple of months, so that much less hate will be preached on talkradio/TV.

The FCC has the ability to create more competition by breaking up the conglomerates. They have the ability to level fines for hate speech.
The FTC has the ability to put restrictions on big pharma ads. They have the ability to hold Fox News to "truth in advertising." Just like you can't change the name of "heroin" to "aspirin" and market it that way, you shouldn't be able to change the name of "opinion" to "news."
The DOJ can certainly press charges against on-air death threats and speech that incites violence.
We've gotten way too used to taking care of problems through the free market by boycotting advertisers. We're brainwashed.
THE GOVERNMENT HAS TOOLS AND NEEDS TO USE THEM. They don't put up tornado sirens to help corporations meet their quarterly profit goals, they're installed to help protect the public. If the FCC, FTC and DOJ are purely there to help corporations, give us our tax money back.
Jerry Rubin's been dead for years. After being one of the highest-profile, most grandstanding, least effective of the names in the antiwar movement, Rubin morphed into a Yuppie, receiving four-figure honoraria for speeches at universities across the country, resting on his laurels and pushing "New Age" crap. I last saw him in 1982 at the University of New Mexico-- he SUCKED! Good riddance. My old friend Abbie Hoffman, who also died, even younger, would have been very disappointed in how Rubin turned out. He was one who symbolized the failure of our Baby-Boomer generation to follow through on the ideals it collectively declared while the Vietnam War was still going on.
Tom Hayden, no longer married to Jane Fonda of course, does valuable community work in California. He has pretty well decided, it seems, to follow the old encomium of radical activism: think globally, but act locally.
