Here's Dave Dayden's take from yesterday on what might be going on during these negotiations over raising the debt limit -- Another Yo-Yo Trick: White House Floats, Then Denies, All-Cuts Deal.

I don't know how this is going to play out, but I do know I feel like I'm living through some re-air of the Twilight Zone just watching our politicians play a dangerous game of chicken this close to defaulting on our nation's debt when this fiasco is one of their own making.

I'm also disgusted that Bernie Sanders is one of the few people speaking out about the inequity in our society as he did here again with Keith Olbermann last night. So far as Bernie noted, nothing he's heard about what's going on during these meetings addresses that and they're looking to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and the elderly if the leaks coming out are true.

End the wars, cut the DOD budget in half, let the Bush tax cuts expire and let Medicare negotiate drug prices and our budget will be just fine (and no taxes were raised.)

Now, let's get our jobs back from the Chinese and put the banksters in jail.

OH MY GOD! Now Bernie Sanders is using the term shared sacrifice! THAT BASTARD! Doesn't he know the metaphor cops get incensed whenever that term is used! Or is it ok if Bernie Sanders does it?

freequark's picture

His use of terms like *shared sacrifice* and *middle class* (as opposed to poor and middle class) is yet more proof of that.

so we can confirm the validity (or is that sanity) of your statement.

We should be able to list the progressives in Congress by naming the members of the progressive caucus, but none of those people are genuine, as they all voted for Obamacare after taking an oath not to vote for a healthcare bill with no public option. Clearly if you judge *progressive* Democrats and *socialist* Bernie Sanders by their actions rather than their words, the only conclusion you can draw is these people are not really progressive, but are in fact part of the conservative establishment.

Actually, you can determine this simply by listening carefully enough to their words. While these people *claim* to support single payer and other progressive ideas, the terminology they use is generally the same terminology used by establishment Democrats like Harry Reid. For example, most of them avoid all reference to *the poor* and speak only of the *middle class.* Clearly the term *middle class* is simply code for *we don't represent the poor.* They use similar code words when referring to taxation, business regulation, etc. I've even heard *progressives* accidentally refer to the *Democrat* Party, which shows their whole psychology is based on subordination to conservatives. Of course most progressives will reject that idea, but again, their actions speak louder than their words.

If FDL wants to EVER name who their sources are, or just refuse to print stories unless if SOMEONE is willing to go on the record, then spare me the talk of the yo-yo metaphors. Many of the "sources" aren't even from the White House, but from the House, so we're oh noesing over Republican sources.

They're the ones doing it to us, not the White House. If people want to react over shoddy journalism that's not the white houses faults

Ape-Man's picture

I'm with you insipid. We all have to do everything we can, and hope for the best. It is harmful to undermine the President before the facts are in. Good point about conservative news sources!

I think what irks many, is how the republicans have gotten the conversation turned to conflating raising the debt ceiling or not, which is unreasonable to begin with, with other unreasonable things that they are demanding. Sort of like extremists taking hostages, threatening to take their lives unless their unreasonable demands are met, and the Democrats would appear, at this point, to be playing along.

I hope we will all be pleasantly surprised when the hostage takers are either talked down or taken out, and the hostages, us, are freed.

Stand by for a message from the President regarding these hostage takers, and their conflation of the debt ceiling with essential social services, and their refusal to pay their debts...

The republicans are basically defaulting on the money they borrowed under Bush.

Great press conference by the President. Let's pray he can convince the republicans to be fair.

Get ready for Boehner's lies. Boehner will claim that raising taxes will cost jobs. The reality is that businesses will provide jobs if there are consumers to buy goods and services, at any tax rate.

Boehner will claim that his plan will preserve Social Security for his and your children. The reality is that SS is not an expense, and is solvent for decades to come.

Boehner will claim that his plan will preserve Medicare. The reality is that the republicans have been trying to kill Medicare for decades, and there is zero reason to believe they have ever changed their minds on that.

Same old song and dance Mr. Boehner. Time's up for you Mr. Boehner.

In the absence or real government leaders, corporate profit mentality will continue to dominate. And eventually, the golf clubs will be burned to the ground.

derekthered's picture

we all know what's going on, china is making the value-added profits; which may not be strictly true, as 60% of what is imported from china is produced by subsidiaries of US corps.

nevertheless, long term, we will go broke if other countries make the value-added products, or you can believe the frankly racist canard about how we superior americans will excel at the hi-tech while the furriners do the grunt work.

this debate is about taxing corps. foreign profits, that's it in a nutshell.

frankly, as long as the donkey runs like a scaredy-cat from embracing the class struggle that is going on, instead of sucking up to the banksters, hedge fund thugs, and wall street, we are screwed.

There is NO shared sacrifice!!

I am voting against every incumbent DEM in the primaries that cuts ONE thing with NO EQUAL revenue increase in taxes.

I am voting AGAINST any incumbent DEM that survives the primary OR for their primary oppenent if he wins.

If they are going to treat us like Republicans, then I say let the Republicans have this mess.

Now they are talking about closing loopholes AND lowering the top tax rates!!

Obama revealed at least part of the reason he tells us he is willing to kick grandma out in the street to give Republicans-those who are actually rich members of the Republican Party and about half of the Democratic Party-what they want.

He told us he is working with the Congress he has. In other words, since we "elected" a Republican majority in the House. He is pissed and this is what you get. As if things would be any different were there still a Democratic majority in the House.

The whole reason Republicans regained the majority in the House is because the Dems were acting like Republicans. Democratic voters didn't see any benefit to going to the booths.

Here's the deal. Democratic voters are not being bribed, only politicians are by those that wish to buy legislation. Voters are actually trying to vote for someone that isn't doing only what the rich want because they too are rich or are being bribed by the rich, but there is simply no longer an option.

If Dems did the right thing, regardless of the billions spent by the rich to try to buy elections, Democrats would see a landslide in their favor, and they know that. They are simply too greedy and want to walk away with millions in their warchests when they retire like Bayh did.

Obama can pretend he would be doing something different if he had a Democratic majority in both chambers of the legislature, but he chose to waste that time on fake healthcare reform and more corporate welfare for the wealthcare industry. He intends on focusing on sending your jobs to South Korea, Panama and Colombia regardless of the majority. He fired NASA a few days ago and my guess is he bought stocks in Space X at the same time.

Obama the millionaire is not Obama the community organizer or Obama the "change" presidential candidate.

The only thing that changed is Obama. You screw with Obama, he will repay you a million-fold.
