MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell reports that according to her sources, not only is Sarah Palin stepping down as Governor of Alaska, she is also getting out of politics, period. Time will tell if Mitchell's reporting is accurate, and whether this is a result of her legal problems that are potentially mounting in Alaska or her thinking that this move somehow would help her in a Presidential run. I would bet on the former if forced to take odds.

Palin quit. She could not finish the job she started. She lied to Alaskans. She told them when she ran for governor that she was a leader. She isn't. She is a quitter. It's a shame she won't run for President in 2012. It would have made things so much easier for us.

curtilingus's picture

You need to listen to her poignant speech. She is saving Alaskans a lot of money by quitting early. She was also so efficient, she got the job done in half the time it takes most governors.

jhunter99844's picture

“I think Sarah Palin is on the verge of becoming the Miami Vice of American politics: Something a lot of people once thought was cool and then 20 years later look back, shake their heads and just kind of laugh,” quipped Republican media consultant Todd Harris.

curtilingus's picture

And yet we fall for it all over again today with CSI Miami.

MountainMan23's picture

"saving Alaskans millions of dollars by quitting"

And the ONLY way I can interpret that is that rather than fight the inevitable impeachment process (the only thing I can think that would COST Alaskans millions of dollars) she's quitting.

Which is a self-serving way of saying she doesn't want to face the consequences of her own behavior.

Democracy is too important to be entrusted to politicians.

"She showed her ass." Crude but true. There was no "swarm of media" on her when she put Wasilla in debt or ran for governor. It took getting on national TV and coming off like the hick fundemenalist rube that she is. She is totally facing the consequences of her own behavior.

I think "something will go public" anyway, whatever it is. I can't see how she'd be more damaged if she doesn't resign than if she does. It will all come out anyway.

I guess I'll just stop speculating for the time being, since there are so many suppositions about her reasons. Interesting that the MSM is reporting only on what she said in that news conference and the reaction of Republican and Democratic leaders. They'll take her at her word until they're kicked in the face with whatever the truth is.

Secondly, at around the same time the sports complex was being built, so was Palin’s new house. What’s interesting about that is the house is constructed from the exact same materials the sports complex was built with. The windows in both structures are the same, the wood is the same, pretty well everything."

Like we kicked around here yesterday, Nixon also said, "I am not a crook," and "You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore." Then, like a bad case of diarrhea, he got the runs (apologies to George Carlin). You can never count out a narcissist.

As for Andrea Mitchell, when did she ever know *anything*? I'm not sure she has any sources besides the work of other "journalists" she reads and listens to. Her work is an echo chamber.

It's pretty obvious she's hastily stepping down because of a looming scandal. The statement she made yesterday was bizarre, and seemed to come out of nowhere.

Until it comes out, these media types are stuck repeating Palin's own incoherent story. It's absurd.

Not only was she grating, she seemed nervous and phony--like she was lying and trying too hard to cover it. How can anyone take her seriously?

RobertD's picture

..."honestly" and "truthfully" in an extemporaneous speech (which this clearly was), they're lying.

multimediavt's picture

Great show and the techniques used in it are very real. So, watch some Lie to me and then go watch her speech again. She's leaking tells like a Swiss cheese water tower. She was angry, and suppressing it. She was lying about the reasons she was spouting. She was talking very quickly and repeating herself, which is a clear sign of heightened stress. Her body language showed that she really wanted to be somewhere else (if not someone else). Etc., etc., etc.

She's done. She's not happy, but the rest of the world is! I don't think you had to be a psychic to figure out that something terrible that she was trying to hide has caught up with her (maybe her complete ignorance of the world around her, or her own rampant corruption and ambition). I really don't think she'll surface as a political candidate again. She may become a "conservative personality" (a contradiction in terms, if you ask me) like RushBo or BillO and make her fortune, but she's done as far as running for office. She'll get torpedoed by whatever is hiding in that black swiftboat-of-skeletons she's got in tow.

Andrea Mitchell, darlin', you stuck your neck out if you didn't have a source, and you may very well be right, but you certainly weren't the only one to see it.

seevee's picture

Oh sure, she asked her kids if they thought she could do more good by working outside of politics (or whatever). She got four or five "Yeah"s, one "Hell Heah!," and one abstention. Of course, the "Hell Yeah" was the clincher. Bull F'n Shit! Like she asked for a vote before making her call. She is a pathological liar and I think the real reason she is cutting and running is because she is dirty.

RobertD's picture

She's absolutely dishonest...factually, intellectually, emotionally (winking at/seducing the camera).

She tosses out these bullshit stories about her kids, for example. The sad part is that good little Jesus-huggers *want* to believe that stuff. She knows it, so she sells it, and they buy it. Those of us who can clearly see through it--and that it's a ruse to cover up her true reasoning, lack of knowledge, motivations, etc.--can't prove it because it's personal. Her kids aren't going to rat her out. Her husband is as dirty as she is, so he won't rat her out. And she has much of the Alaskan conservative political establishment in her back pocket, so they won't either.

And yet there she is, lying, and using her kids for cover. That's fuckin' scary, because if she'd do that, she'd do almost anything. No morals.

Let me see if I've got this straight.

She wanted this job.

Alaskans elected her to do it.

She accepted.

Now that the job got hard she decided she didn't want to do it any more.

And she let her kids make the actual decision of whether or not she was going to do the job she willingly signed up for and was elected to do.

Poor Sarah. She stepped outside of her bubble and not everyone tells her how wonderful she is and she can't take it any more.

I don't miss her already.

palin has much in common with Gov Sanford. They both speak in terms of,

-What they want.
-What is best for them.
-Where they want to go.
-How tired they are in their job(s) for not getting their complete
way.
-How others were mean spirited to them.
-Doing whats best for themselves and not the peoples work.
Etc, Etc.....................
All about themselves.

will be a serious blow to the (r). when you try to listen to palin you can hear her try to lay the blame on others. this is the (r) favorite strategy get others to explain themselves. those that have to explain are considered losing. palin has always been a loser in my mind. if guilty i want her caught.

dothehop's picture

I see this move by Palin as a way to get into some cushy higher paying job where she doesn't have to strain that small brain of hers as much. If one thinks about it, she has gained all kinds of national notoriety and is going to cash in on it before her 15 minutes is actually up. I see her as nothing more than some greedy b@#$% who looks to cash in at the best possible moment.

that's it. this is for $. what's interesting she really doesn't have any loyality to "we the people". palin will be a cheerleader for the weak (r) party. the (r) has suffered a couple of blows to the midsection sanford and let's not forget enSIGN. palin will rally the far right/ evangelicals for ROMney. this is a strategy. when the far right/evangelicals get revealed in their own hypocrisy they come back even harder. the financial elites are afraid of reform regarding safety nets. i believe the financial elites don't want this country to have much if any safety nets. palin will provide that over the top anti-gov. rhetoric that capitalists love. they don't want to waste the enthusiasm/propaganda that palin provides. once again the evangelicals will get used.

I think she's too much of a narcissist to disappear altogether. It looks to me like she may want the attention (of the media) and adoration (of mindless Wingers), without having the scrutiny that an extreme Wingnut is likely to attract.

If Todd Purdum's article had anything to do with convincing Palin to quit, then we all owe him a huge "Thank You."

One think that struck me yesterday was that she understandably doesn't want her children made fun of in the media, but she can't keep herself from using them and making bizarre statements about them. Poor Trig, I wish him well, but the world certainly is not in need of more handicapped or disabled children. Her statement that the world needs more, not fewer Trigs is one of the nuttiest things a major politician has ever uttered.

Why on Earth would anyone hope for more handicapped children? What, does Palin see giving birth to such a child as some kind of accomplishment? I've always found it weird the way parents act as though having a child is the most creative act anyone could ever perform. Yeah, there are only about 6.8 billion (BILLION!!!) people in the world. What a remarkable feat of creativity to add to that total!

No one should make fun of Trig, but if people make jokes about him they are probably just countering Palin's exploitation of her son by using him to ridicule her. And she certainly deserves ridicule.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator John McCain expressed support for his former presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, on Saturday as Washington speculated about why the Alaska governor abruptly announced her resignation.
Her decision, announced in a rambling, disjointed statement in her home town of Wasilla, Alaska, fueled speculation that she might be seeking to position herself for a run.

http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTR...

Stranger and stranger...

RobertD's picture

...she's got the runs.

Seriously, we can dream, but there's no way she's going away. She's quitting her job, she'll be investigated by the feds--maybe even indicted and discredited.

But look at Oliver North--and Adm. John Poindexter. They were indicted and discredited. And back they came. Karl Rove is all over faux, so is Billie Kristol, and even Gordon Liddy.

It doesn't mean she'll actually *become* president, but she'll never go away. And she may still try to run (Mrs. Greenspan's "sources" notwithstanding). The spotlight shines too brightly.

Now, this doesn't preclude one of her kids writing that "Mommy Dearest"-type book in the future. If they're not totally messed up, there's got to be a little anger there, family dynamics being what they often are.

It's amazing how Republicans have a way of making getting indicted look good on a resume.
