ACORN Head Bertha Lewis Vows Action on Employee Misconduct, But Warns Group Targeted by “Modern-Day McCarthyism”
From Democracy Now--ACORN Head Bertha Lewis Vows Action on Employee Misconduct, But Warns Group Targeted by “Modern-Day McCarthyism”. The Lou Dobbs, Glenn Becks and other right wing screechers of the world should be so proud. We need a few more Amy Goodmans and a few less of them to cut through the propoganda attacking one of the only groups out there advocating for poor people and minorities that don't have much of a voice in our society.
AMY GOODMAN: The anti-poverty group ACORN is coming under a firestorm of criticism after the group’s workers were caught on camera appearing to offer advice to a pimp and prostitute. The video was a major strike for conservatives, who for years have accused ACORN of voter registration fraud during presidential elections. Republicans are calling for a complete cutoff of all federal funding to the group, which helps poor people fight foreclosures, fix tax problems, and register to vote. We speak with ACORN chief executive Bertha Lewis.
[....]
AMY GOODMAN: Yet the video came out, and you had some of your biggest supporters in Congress actually voting against ACORN, saying you shouldn’t get funding, because they were appalled by what they saw. How do you put—
BERTHA LEWIS: Right.
AMY GOODMAN: —these two together?
BERTHA LEWIS: Well, first of all, we are suffering from a modern-day type of McCarthyism. You know, have you now or have you ever been associated with ACORN? This has been repeated in the right-wing Republican echo chamber, that somehow or another we are to be discredited.
We are the largest membership-based community organization of low- and moderate-income people of color, black and brown folks, in this country. We have been around for forty years. We’ve saved thousands of homes. We’ve helped raise the wages of tens of thousands and now hundreds of thousands of people. And also, we have been able to make sure that millions of disenfranchised black and brown folks in this country actually vote and they are actually counted.
So, for us, we know that there is a race element to trying to stop us. I mean, look at what’s happened with Van Jones and Eric Holder and Judge Sotomayor. We know that we have been used as a surrogate to attack President Obama. The teabaggers have had signs with ACORN at teabag parties, and we never even were around or there.
And it’s not going to stop. We understand that. And our work is not going to stop. So, the relative ten percent of our entire funding that would come through the government, sure, we are going to fight back against this, because we know that this is an unfair attack. And it’s been going on from the Republican side and the right-wing side. However, our core work will never stop.
And we know that—being the largest organization of black and brown folks, people of color, in this country, we know that we are a target. But we meet that challenge. And if you were to hear the racist, sexist, just horrible vitriol that are visited on our offices and on the phone, in emails, threats left at our door, hate mail letters sent, you know, it is very clear that people on the right, and Republicans in particular, are very upset that ACORN is effective and that it’s been around for forty years and that we are a powerful organization.

"Well, first of all, we are suffering from a modern-day type of McCarthyism."
No, first of all, Bertha Williams needs to address the abominable behavior by those Acorn workers and prove clearly that it's an aberration and not systemic.
I'm already convinced of the McCarthyism claim, it's Acorn's integrity that's in question at this moment.
... doesn't it the burden of the proof reside on the people making the claims/accusations?
What "abominable behavior"?
They tried to go along with the prank ala Borat/Bruno, and were pretty stupid for doing so.
ACORN is involved in prank concerning prostitutes - abominable behavior. Kicked off the bus immediately
Republican Senator Vitter patronizes actual prostitutes - Vitter gets a free pass.
you should watch the video clip. Then, you would understand that Ms. Williams took swift action to address this situation.
Second, Acorn's integrity is in question because a group of racist, privileged white people have launched a systematic series of attacks to discredit the entire organization.
Let's see...if I use Rove's techniques or the logic of Acorn's detractors, I might say something like, "And, just how do you plan to support your contention that you are convinced of the McCarthyism claim, when obviously you are promulgating the wingnut talking point denigrating Acorn's integrity?!"
When are the Republicans going to propose that the U.S. officially apologize for how it treated Joseph McCarthy?!? He died a drunken disgrace, but clearly in today's climate, he would be lauded and probably even considered a potential GOP Presidential nominee.
It is also post-modern day racism from those on Fox News to Lou Dobbs and the jerks in the U.S. Congress who also help foment this hatred and intolerance, Yes this is in fact post-modern-day racism!
The attacks on ACORN are nothing but out of the John Birch Society playbook.
I agree Wizard. It's the same way they treat the NAACP and the ACLU to some extent. Closeted racism.
I think it is pretty much in the open, it is only "closeted" because normal people refuse to call a spade a spade.
Black people used to be called spade too.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
Are you snarking here, or are you genuinely unaware of the contemporary etymology of this centuries-old phrase--now conflated with the racist usage of the word 'spade'?
If you intend the original meaning, do you genuinely believe that most 'normal' people are incapable of blunt honesty, or just blunt honesty about their racism?
This is from the interview of the pimp on the fox morning news show:
Fox Host: "You're not a pimp, you're just playing one on our show"
Pimp: "Ya, I'm one of the whitest guys ever."
So clearly this kid equates being a pimp with being black, and not being a pimp with being white.
I don't know about 'post-modern' but thats pretty damn racist.
Funny how the Repukes and Dumbs can pull together to attack organizations such as Acorn or MoveOn.Org, ain’t it?
With ACORN on one side and Blackwater/Xe on the other. I'll take ACORN any day. Just another example of Republicans at their best.
And what kind of sterotypical outfit was that undercover pimp wearing. Is that what they think pimps look like? What a joke.
costume? That he looked like he put his grand mother's fur stole on over his Andover uniform?
How can anyone think that a street smart person like most of the Acorn workers must be, actually thought these two ignorant assholes were for real. They deserved to be screwed with, and they were. You get back what you give. As it should be.

when it shows them walking into the offices, he's wearing khakis and a dress shirt. No coat.
I need to get out more.
better watch out, then it's the doobie brothers.

rove and the right did a lot of negative framing/linguistics regarding ACORN for the election. ACORN is now a hot buzz word for some (r)/(i). they don't want to waste all that work they did to paint ACORN as cheaters. i'll bet group studies done where they ask (r) about ACORN is only negative with little if any real understanding of the issues. i agree with the ceo bertha lewis tell the entire story that this set-up was tried at about 2 dozen other offices. the right want's to make a bigger deal out this than it is. it also sounds like it's being done to try and offset the rove fiasco with the attorney general(s).
It is fascinating to get a real picture of just how threatened Rove was, and is, by Acorn. Look at how much energy and focus Rove and his followers put into undermining and de-legitimizing them.
Karl and his gang of dirty tricksters know their enemy -- (organized) people who are not white and not wealthy. The masses beyond their control, the people who seem to have no power, unless they mobilize. The Obama presidency is surely Rove's worst nightmare.
Rove is one of the most powerful people in the world, and who does he regard as the people who threaten his interests the most? Acorn. The people, united.
I don't think Karl and company regard their tea party followers as being out of control. I think the radical right-wing want to destabilize the country.
It's quite clear now that while Obama has been naively seeking common ground between America's ruling parties, the GOP under the kindly auspices of Karl Rove,in the spirit of Brotherhood and bipartisanship, have been diligently working out a way to best destroy the President. What better way to tarnish a former "community organizer" than to bring down the country's biggest community organization thereby making the indirect, utterly unfair but definitely damaging connection between the two?
BTW,this ACORN thing is a God Damned shame.
Given unlimited time resources and toxic hate by the barrel load, and one could uncover corruption anywhere at any level of society.(Actually the higher up the ladder the more corruption as the GOP demonstrates on a daily, hourly basis)
"To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And,
at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between,
plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big "thing."
This is truth, to me. "

Yes, it is a shame about ACORN. They have been around since 1970 and have helped many poor people. They hire poor and disadvantaged people, including ex-felons. Where else would people like this, without much experience, without much education, and perhaps with a criminal record....where else would they work? Not too many people would hire people like this. What would repugs want them to do, go on welfare?
I just fired off an email to some right wing web site I came across by accident....think it's related to the teabaggers in St. Louis...never heard of it, and now I don't even remember what the web site was.
Anyway, they were praising the stings on ACORN, and they were praising Glenn Beck. I pointed out that ACORN has been given about $53M over 15 years; however, $8 billion given to the CPA, under Paul Bremer's leadership, just disappeared. That money was to be distributed to various Iraqi ministries to help rebuild the country, but it simply vanished in a relatively short period of time.
$53M in 15 years is a lot less than $8B in a short period of time.
Yes, there is corruption at any level of society, and it's a damned shame beck and these idiot repugs focus on the very poor and disadvantaged among us.
By the way, after I got home this afternoon, I noticed someone had called me on my home phone but didn't leave me a message. It was a number from New Orleans, and the caller ID said "ACORN." I've never had contact with anyone at ACORN....no email, no telephone calls, no s-mail. Wonder what that was about? I think NO is their headquarters, and I know they have been issued subpoenas last month. Curious.
2 people walk into an office, start a discussion, and destroy an organization that has worked for years on behalf of the poor.
Why oh why can't we have some sort of camera showing discussions Cheney had regarding energy policies / Iraq / torture.
Consequences of Acorn business - heavens to betsy - a hooker gets a house. Consequences of Cheney's dealings... war and death.
I'm a long time fan of Crooks & Liars - and I just formally signed up so I could "respond" on this issue. But in the wake of Van Jones, and now this, I can't help but think, some day, I'll be applying for some important role, and I'll have some computer savvy Beck loving Teabagger say - 'hey, is it true you were affiliated w/ crooks 'n liars - off w/ your head...'
I can't watch the Acorn video because it sounds too painful. While I can't condone what they advised, I'm also very aware that they didn't wake up that day thinking "ok, what crime will I commit". No, they went to work with the idea that they were committed to helping people that came to their office, and I expect they filled that role well on days when they weren't being tricked.
I'm not mad at Acorn. This situation was handled in a gross way. In a caring community/country - this could be viewed as a 'teachable moment' - that Acorn could use to strengthen and improve itself. But it feels all too likley that Acorn will be abandoned - as will the thousands of poor people that they serve. That's the tragedy I see. Our governemnet paid more in Wall Street bonuses than they ever gave to Acorn.
1. ACORN the actual organization hasn't done anything wrong. In point of fact, ACORN the actual organization has done a lot of good.
2. Evidence of employee misconduct has been responded to swiftly, and appropriately. Which is a hell of a lot more than you can say about OFFICIAL misconduct and corruption from, oh say, Halliburton, Blackwater, Bush administration, Insurance industry, Wall St., etc...
3. The 'sting' operation, as it were, operated for MONTHS to produce the footage they got.
4. Lets tone down the outrage. It was a sting operation. There are no actual underage prostitutes. It was all pretend. Yes the employees who believed it and acted as they did are reprehensible but as I said, there were no actual sex slave pimps seeking tax dodges.
Absolutely NO evidence has ever been produced that the ACORN organization from mgt down has ever had any kind of offical policy that breaks any law, or operates in any unethical way. They work to register poor people to vote and to help them organize in a way that helps them get their voices heard. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, its a very good thing that ANY REAL PATRIOT would be proud to support.
You want to guess how many employees of ANY large firm behaves unethically or illegally? Do you really want to play that game?
How can anyone be against ACORN, based on these events, yet also be against investigations of torture?
"Sting" my ass, I would call it entrapment. I'm not a lawyer, but I play one on T.V.
Since the Feds have cut off their funding, I guess it's up to the rest of us to contribute what we can to a good organization, even if they have a few uninformed employees.
Oh, when you get the chance read about the "prostitute's" father.
I'm not an attorney, either, but I would call it entrapment. I also think that in some states, it is not legal to record someone without them knowing it. Although in response to this, I saw someone say that in Maryland, while it is illegal to record audio, that is not the case for video recording....but, I really don't know.
I also would like to know why these two "journalists" did not go to the police right away in the case of the San Bernardino ACORN worker who claimed to have killed her husband. They video recorded that one on or about August 16th, and it wasn't until September 15th that a police report actually was created....right after beck aired the video. You think that if they thought a crime really had been committed, especially murder, they would report it right away. What's that tell you about their ethics?
Ethics shmethics. This is about evil greedy fascist bastards (GOP), using their ginormous wealth and media monopoly to destroy the smallest, most remote shred of good, that might threaten their complete control.
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
states have a single party laws, where you can record a conversation with only one party knowing about it.
And entrapment only counts for criminal suits, and while I'm not a lawyer it would be pretty borderline if it was a criminal charge.
Maryland has two different laws that would cover this, one wouldn't apply because it is being taped in a business which is specifically allowed, the other is under the wiretapping section, which is what Linda Tripp was going to be initially charged under. But the code calls for intercepting communication, and it could be argued that there was no interception the the workers freely and willingly engaged in the conversation.
And she didn't admit to murder, she stated she killed her husband in self defense because he was abusive, if I was told that I would assume that the story had been checked out by the police and she was either found not guilty, had served her time, or that the police and prosecutors had not found sufficient cause to bring charges.
The problem with the legal definition of entrapment as I've read it requires law enforcement to do it.
But one would have to look at the previous court history to see if the definition has evolved over time.
However, if they're using it to build or initiate a criminal case that might suffice for the caveat.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
Two low level staffers out of a 1000 are unethical and they shut down the organization. Heck too big to fail taxpayer supported banks and their CEOs/directors stole trillions of dollars, then paid off politicians with contributions so they wouldn't be prosecuted. For republicans it is all about benefiting the wealthy and the trickle down goes directly into their pockets (see Gale Norton).
This is not my father's America
You know that, and I know that; but the morons who watch Beck and believe the Fox bullshit and clear channel lunacy, somehow haven't been able to figure it out.
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
This bs how about blackwater
The same terminally rabid GOPers that relentlessly attack Acorn suddenly fall silent when the light is redirected to the murderers and rapists at Blackwater and conveniently forget that Erik Prince is under investigation for criminal misdeeds.
Nobody could ever accuse the GOP of setting a worthy example for integrity and quality leadership. Quite the opposite---they are a good example of flagrant hypocrisy and self centeredness. They are a malignant, pus filled tumor on our political system.
"We will find fulfillment not in the goods that we have, but in the good we can do for each other."
Robert F. Kennedy
Is just how many Acorn offices these 2 assholes went in to play there sting. Will we ever know. Did they go into 20, 25 offices and just keep the good ones. any people out there think this was a set up. After they get the vidio's they were after, they show up on FUX news!!!!!!! this shit is right out of the repug play book.
A crashed economy, Senators of the Right involved in Prostitution, Child Pedophilia, Homosexual Acts in Public rest rooms, lets NOT forget the Idiot repupulan Governors that Flew out of this country on TAX PAYER money to have a illicit love affair (and still promote family values {pukes}). Crashes 94 Banks to date and these SCUM BAGS want to shut down a FEDERALLY FUNDED group who the delusional Right GOVERNORS STUPID of MN and LA have cut off imaginary funding to in their states and these Low LIFE lip lock love muscle sell outs want to dump ACORN.
These delusional Morons must be brought to account they are trying to stop the POOR and uneducated from getting help this SI NOT about corruption this is about CONTROL the VOTE.
Will the Spineless left stand up to these Morons they have NO back bone they have NO Intestinal Fortitude in fact if really challenged they would give FREE BLOW JOBS so you do not yell at them in public.
If you think Bertha is so convincing, send the organization a check. I'm keeping my money in my pocket.
