A Republican tea party candidate running for Ohio's 8th Congressional District declared Monday that House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) was a "socialist."

David Lewis told Fox News' Neil Cavuto that he hopes to defeat Boehner in the Republican primary by running on the tea party platform.

"John Boehner is a socialist," Lewis explained. "I'm not calling him names."

"Socialist!" Cavuto objected. "Now, David, come on. That's a little extreme."

"It's an economic policy. I'm not calling names," Lewis insisted. "Here is someone that refuses to phase out Social Security. What I would do as a U.S. House member is work to phase out Social Security totally. 100 percent. That includes Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps. These are socialist policies."

"Does the tea party have your back?" Cavuto asked.

"I believe so... The tea party is still trying to figure out whether they believe in socialist policies," Lewis replied.

"David, that's a strong term to use. You know, many have been using it about liberals and those in Congress who want bigger and better government and all of that stuff. But you can call John Boehner probably a lot of things, but the socialist thing, don't you think that's a little over the top?" Cavuto wondered.

Last September, Cavuto didn't seem to mind as much when Home Depot founder Bernie Marcus told him that President Barack Obama was a "socialist at heart."

Dear Mr. Cavuto. We are all socialists. We have been for the history of the nation. I think you are confusing the word socialist with the word communist, and conflating that with the megalomaniacs that ran under that banner in the former Soviet Union...

There is nothing negative about American socialism - it is the basic element of American society.

Socialism has been conflated with Soviet communism for years by the GOP. Socialism is actually the equitable distribution of public resources designed to maximize the benefit for all. Of course, condescending toadies like Cavuto believe in the primacy of the wealthy class at the expense of society. The Teabag dork---well, who knows what he believes except in anarchy.

Have you ever noticed that whenever Cavuto conducts an interview, even with an inanimate object, the IQ in the room actually goes down?

I didn't think IQ could be measured in negative numbers. At least, not until I saw that segment.

Of course every minority is a socialist to these "death to America" bastards.

Mr. Boner was able to achieve that lovely hue by spending copious time on a golf course - at a members-only 'socialist' Country Club somewhere. Each member pays his dues which are combined and the total is used for the maintenance and operation of the club for the benefit of all the members.
Sounds like socialism to me!

Do those people even know what the word 'socialism' means? Or is it just something that sounds scary to them?

Words have meanings. And socialism is not a dirty word.

..funny here is this Cavuto idiot played his role in helping Fixed News create & foster the whole Tea Party phenomenon, yet when one of Cavuto's Frankenstein monsters (David Lewis) enter his creation chamber, Cavuto, like a coward, pivots away from Lewis & defends the lowlife, John Boner.

I find it highly humorous that Fixed News has hypocritically abandoned its Frankenstein monster creations like Lewis & is now forced to defend highly unpopular party hacks like Boner & Ryan.

When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in excess body fat & carrying a misspelled sign.

Perhaps the "vetting process" of Boehner, neglected to get enough dirt on him to get him to behave.

He's a loose cannon if he is merely corrupt. They will have to arrange for him to "sext" some dirty photos or something soon.

Thank goodness that Fox News has a cracker-jack phone hacking department and CIA spooks on their payroll -- and I'm being sarcastic -- NOT unrealistic here.

Sadly the GOP will never realize that they could please the Tea Party 99.999% of the time but all they will remember is the .001% when they didn't and try to hold it against them. After all, at the end of the day, the Tea Party folk are going to vote GOP anyway (not like they would be caught dead going Democrat). They have their vote no matter what. Knowing that, they should make the decision to simply do what is best for the country, not what will please a group of people that thrive on strife, hate, fear and misery. Sadly we all know that day will never come.

Teh stupid, it's burning more! Man! That is some industrial strength idiocy. Tell that jackass to lobby to get rid of public schools, firemen, and police, because those are all examples of government adopting privatized business models as public goods. Oops, forgot about municipal utilities. It's too bad someone credible isn't running against him, but maybe this will help to split the Republican/Independent vote, and they might actually elect a Democrat to that seat. We can only hope.

I cannot tell you how many times I've heard that "NAZIS" stands for National Socialist Party.

Hitler attacked his own group with the Reichstag fire and claimed that Polish people on horseback were going to over-run the country. He was a consummate liar. He could have called in "Rainbow Unicorn Party" and it would have meant as much.

... but it's a GREAT talking point, so of course, it gets repeated and High-Fives all around for "smashing that LibRul!"

Maybe we could re-label Nazi bullets as "can of peaches" and see what happens?

Requiring people to actually learn what Socialism or even Communism is -- is too much thinking. And I'd dare say that Communism has NEVER been fully realized except as a few "experiments" amongst hippies in the US.

Other than a pesky Constitution -- it's darn hard to tell the difference between China and the USA other than the lack of foreign ownership of their political class. Chinese "Communism" is doing just fine with American Capitalism.

And if you 40 and still a communist you have no brains. China today is a combination of the worst of two separate worlds. The worst that capitalism has to offer and the worst that communism has to offer.

gogojack's picture

I guess I figured it would take a little longer for the Tea Party guys to start feasting upon their own kind. Guess I was wrong.

What I don't get is the fixation from these nut bags trying to scare people with the specter of a threat that has been dead so long most new voters don't realize exactly what they're supposed to be afraid of.

I mean, my daughter has been old enough to vote for a few years, and she doesn't remember the bogeyman of international communism. It collapsed around when she was learning to poop on her own.

I've found that I no longer think mere "Democracy and Capitalism" is safe -- and I am also now a Socialist.

Also, as a good yardstick for potential NEW things to be promoting, I'm wondering if becoming a member of the Taliban isn't maybe ALSO a good idea -- anything that Republicans rail about as "all bad" might require a second look.

Sure, maybe being Al Qaeda or something is a dangerous hobby -- and I'm sure the parties with only guys and no booze are pretty boring. So like a stopped clock, maybe Republicans and Ron Paul are once in a while correct.

But hey -- imagine the FUN of having a Pro Taliban bumper sticker -- it's like the '80's version of Satanic Rock and Roll.

... I'm sure that this next generation is going to have to adopt some crazy stuff because long hair just doesn't piss off the parents enough anymore.

And since most therapeutics and vaccines are developed with socialist policy, it only stands to reason that this clown should refuse all of them. I predict that one day, the "leaders" of the Tea Party, will create an "Emergency Space Vehicle" with the promise to "Help YOU escape the dreaded liberal menace" emblazoned on the side.

It will either launch itself 5 feet -- just enough to fall off a cliff, or make "rocket sounds" for days on end, and when the occupants finally tire and force open a hatch, they will see a sign; "Welcome to Mars!"

It probably all depends on how generous they are feeling after the usefulness of their Brown Shirts has ended.

Not that I condone such exploitation -- I'm merely making a prediction based on past evidence, and I have an excellent track record. I even Predicted that Rush Limbaugh would endorse Hillary Clinton -- and sure enough, when the chance of a Black President reared up -- he most certainly did.

I know longer discount a fevered, crazy dream as something impossible anymore.

I just read in "A Beautiful Mind" that all that is needed for a person, (or persons) to be involuntarily committed to a psychiatric institution is for a psychiatrist to deem them a danger to themselves, OR OTHERS!!
that's a VERY IMPORTANT CLAUSE, and is used all the time to deny people bail at arraignment. It seems to me that people who think, talk, and act like this, and there are are plenty of them, are "delusional paranoids,", and therefore represent a danger to me, my family, and my loved ones, and should be committed for 10 days of "observation" under a doctors care, just to be sure that their behavior doesn't warrant further treatment, like they want to force on kids who seem..."out of control" and are being force fed powerful "medications", and "referred" to "treatment", (some as young as 5 years old) Google it!!
It seems that people who spout this rhetoric are dangerous not only to me, but to THEMSELVES, as they are in danger of being harmed by some lunatic with a gun out there, who's just plain tired of hearing about how these people know what's best for us, and our country, and that without their HELP, this nation is DOOMED!
That's 'paranoid delusion'... in a nutshell; So let's all hurry and MEDICATE this guy, and all those like him, because they are "out of control", and don't want to, or are unwilling to, accept the facts as they are, when a child in school acts out, the FIRST thing that happens is they are "evaluated", then "medicated", and finally forced into a "treatment program" usually with a low-slung title like "behavior modification".

Just because these people aren't 5 years old, doesn't meant they aren't in need of "evaluations, medications, and treatment, what they DON'T NEED, is a seat in CONGRESS!!

Yes, there has been many successful efforts to identify and measure ones' level of Authoritarianism, and in the studies researchers have found two predominant types. The first is the follower, the submissive to Authority, in desperate need of a strong Authority to help them calm the fear built into them. They are the RWA, right-wing authoritarian(right = submissive to authority, left = skeptic of authority)
Then there is the leaders, the "get it done, take no prisoners" executives, craving power beyond all measure, selfish and amoral, the are the SDO, or social dominators.

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

Here is a portion of the petition submitted to the AMA to declare Authoritarian Personality a treatable syndrome;
"While most accounts of the days leading up to Hitler's dictatorship tell us of a "hypnotic" influence he exerted over the general public, few point out which political stripe it was that was most charmed by his presence and message. As it turns out, research done after WW2 specifically done in an attempt to discover what had actually taken place in the minds of so many "normal" Germans has resulted in the discovery of what is now known as the "authoritarian personality syndrome". Hitler's most loyal followers almost always displayed authoritarian personality traits.

The root cause of this syndrome is still debated, but what is known is that their cognitive-social-intellectual development remains immature into adulthood. It leaves them with limited abilities for deciding questions that require the ability to think in abstract and complex ways. Instead they seek out authority figures who will (and do) inform even their most basic decisions for them. As a result, persons so afflicted seek out careers in law-enforcement or to the military where thinking for oneself is not promoted."

Usually, when you're gonna say something insulting, you deny first, then insult: "I'm not a racist, but ..." etc. The familiar pattern.

This guy's not even concerned enough to do that. He insults first and then denies what he just did: "Boehner's a socialist. I'm not calling him names." But the evidence that you did call him names is provided by your immediately preceding utterance!

And given the state of this country, he'll probably win.

Fake_William_Shatner's picture

It's that ability to contradict oneself in the same sentence, and not either care nor notice that fact that most scares me about these "NeoCons" -- or Tea Baggers, or Christianists -- whatever you call this aberration we see in America.

I am a Unitarian (well, a "lapsed" UU) -- and I used to think it important to "listen to and respect all forms of beliefs" -- but I no longer feel that way.

It seems so many religious groups in America got taken over by political operatives and opportunists -- or maybe it's always been that way. To me -- it's the equivalent of leaving gasoline soaked rags around the house -- they might not BURST into flames, but they always catch fire if a spark is around.

Republican power groups have taken advantage of some sort of "anti-fact" or "faith based" upbringing that Churches have created. There are serious, and dramatic studies that show that "born again Christians" have damages to "memory storage" in their brains;

http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi%2F10....

... what I think this means is that, NON-emotional data doesn't have enough "oomph" to seat itself in their brains. The classic "reality bubble" is impregnable to stats and figures -- even though these are often prattled off by the Anti-Global Warming fan ad nauseum.

>> By the way, the term Socialist -- should be translated as; "whatever I don't like." There is probably no real understanding of what it means, how it functions, or it's strengths and weaknesses -- it's just "fire bad, beer good."

So what? The Tea Party goon can run on anything he likes. He'll be defeated because US citizens LOVE their socialism. Why? Because they know that socialism gives them a semblance of even-handedness and saves them from dying in the streets if they get down on their luck.

My guess is that, despite the Tea Party rantings on socialism, the US public will want even more of it. Our next argument for more socialism will be the health care system. It'll take about 10 years, but it's coming.

People like this don't care if other people die (and don't believe they are or should be obliged to care), because their philosophy is "every man for himself and let the devil take the hindmost" (AKA "survival of the fittest"). They're convinced that whenever something bad happens to someone, it's almost always that person's own fault for failing to take an adequate amount of "personal responsibility" because they believe (either naively or disingenuously) that most people will voluntarily behave ethically and those who don't will inevitably be winnowed out by the free market. All complete rubbish, of course, as anyone who's studied history or human nature can tell you...but they believe it anyway. Of course, they also arrogantly believe that neither they or any of theirs would ever end up suffering unnecessarily for someone else's misfeasance or malfeasance because they always take "personal responsibility" -- but if and when they did, it couldn't possibly be their own fault (which just goes to show how quickly many human beings will conveniently exempt themselves from the principles which they claim are important in situations when those principles no longer guarantee a personal benefit).

...does Lewis consider himself a Christian? For some reason, I'm inclined to guess he does -- many right-wingers, including a surprising number of Libertarian extremists like this guy, do. However, if he thinks John Boehner is a socialist(!), then he clearly hasn't read the New Testament in a very long time -- because from the sound of it, a lot of the principles which Jesus of Nazareth and his disciples advocated are very similar to those which this man opposes and considers "socialism." Of course, what this means is that if Lewis does consider himself a "good Christian", then he's clearly one of those people who thinks that it's perfectly ethical to twist the principles of one's religion in order to satisfy the demands of the ego rather than vice versa...because if he had the first clue of what Christianity is truly supposed to be about and if he hadn't convinced himself that Christianity means exactly what he wants it to mean, he wouldn't want anything to do with it.

The idea that Christianity and "every-man-for-himself" extreme Libertarianism are in any way compatible is a testament to the unfortunate human capacity for egocentricity and self-deception.

Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.

I mean it. We need more candidates like the guy! No, I don't mean his view or the fact that he may be partially retarded, but I mean he's being honest about his positions and he's pointing out actual voting records of his opponent that fly in the face of the rhetoric of that said opponent. This is the way it should be done. Yeah, he's doesn't seem to have passed his high school Public Speaking requirement (or gotten above a D, if its even still a requirement) -- but gotta love him for his extremely up-front detailing of his positions and the inconsistencies that exist between his adversary's rhetoric vs voting record. Well done!

On a side note, that was pretty f**king painful to watch.

Wow. That guy actually got elected to Congress? He had a hard time stringing a sentence together, let alone a coherent thought.

Maybe he was off his meds. I hope he's making good use of his congressional health benefits - in which case, by his own definition, he's a socialist himself.

Adam Smith advocated progressive taxation. I guess that makes the father of modern capitalism... a socialist?
