Scarborough: Choosing Rahm Emanuel like choosing Tom Delay
By David Wednesday Nov 05, 2008 3:01pm
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough is outraged because Barack Obama offered the chief of staff position to Rahm Emanuel.

No, it's more like selecting Holy Joe Lieberman
I think we can see what the right-wing will be doing. Same thing they did with Clinton; demand "bipartisanship", but greet every sell-out compromise with greater cries and screams of bias.
Rahm Emanuel is practically a Republican, and Scarborough knows it. They don't care. They're going to scream no matter what, because they aren't interested in getting along. It's ridiculous to pander in their direction.
I think that we should care. Rahm Emanuel is a choice which should disturb Democrats. As you say, he is "practically a Republican". I would argue that that may be worse than an actual Republican, because he may get a pass for things we never would allow a Republican to do. Obama's choice of a DLC apparatchik really makes my skin crawl.
Rahm would not have been on my list, either. With that said...who gives a fuck what Joe 'Dead Intern' says?!
a Republican to do'? ?..... Since when has anyone stopped a Republican from doing anything these last,oh so long ,years? Methinks You may be too close to the process to have a clear view. And btw,if Obama's choices disturb Dems on The Hill, that's a good thing. they Need a little disturbing. Like scum on a pond, they need to be blown about and awakened to the fact that thier purpose is to serve US.We pay for them-We are the boss, not them.
then the DLC is probably not the direction that you want to go. The DLC (e.g., Lieberman, Emanuel), are stealth Republicans. My point is made by the fact that Lieberman, for example, has been tolerated in a way that we would never tolerate him if he had an R by his name. Rahm Emanuel is cut from the same (DLC) cloth. These are not the kind of "Democrats" to whom we want to give power.
I agree 100%!!!
rahm is not like that...
you are letting your jew hatred show
Rahm Emanuel is a DLC Democrat just like Joe Lieberman. It is offensive and ignorant that you would attribute my objection to him as "jew hatred".
Uncle Joe... get a grip... Most Bigots see Bigotry everywhere...
If you understood Rahm better you'd know how stupid you sound. Why on earth would you just jump in with a remarkably ignorant comment lie "jew hatred" with no evidence anyway? Over-sensitive much?
*
Rahm, is that you?
Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
My guess is that Obama knows exactly what's he doing. He's known Emanuel for years and worked with him, so it's not like we know something about the man that he doesn't. And if I remember correctly, Obama has said all along that he's not interested in packing his administration with "yes men" (or women) that will do nothing but parrot back to him what they think he wants to hear.
Now that we've had a clean sweep of the White House and Congress, maybe we need to look at our media. Time to get rid of the pod people from Planet Bizarro, like 'the Scar.'
Along with all the fembots, gas bags and douchnozzles at Fox. Also, couldn't Blitzer be relegated to doing specials, say,, once every ten years? I still to this day do not understand his appeal.
Because FOX "news" choosing Joe Scarborough is like the Nazi Party choosing Joseph Goebbels. And they're both named Joe!! Do think that's just coincidence? (You see how the smear works now Mr. Scaboroo?)
What's really ironic is that Scarborough frames this in terms of Obama's mission to unify the country. The Republicans played a game of divide and conquer and they failed to conquer, but were pretty damn good at the division part. Why does Joe Scarborough want to continue with that divisive behavior?
…divisive behavior?
Because like fixed noise, all of the other crap media have 24/7 to fill and what do they have to fill it with? They will continue to divide until they conquer.
What is amazing here is that anyone pays attention to them.
I guess we are all junkies.
The two things are like one another in that both Emmanuel and DeLay are/were congressmen. I fail to see other similarities.
i think they're both jerks...
to be an enforcer, good.
If he picked him to be a policy guy (which I doubt), bad.
Joe Scarborough is as irrelevant as Tom Delay and makes me want to puke just as much too.
This is nothing more than being a wet blanket to dampen the victory. He's minimizing the win.
connection problems as with the last post.
Dressing a 6 foot cockroach in a tie and plastic dress shoes then telling everybody it is now in charge would be like getting another Tom Delay. Not this.
Put another hash mark in the whining GOP "Both Sides Do It" column.
Nice try, Scar.
I wasn't aware of any such thing.
Obama takes charge, like a good military officer.
In which case, Rahm will be a subordinate, serving his commander.
I expect this.
Go to Liebermans paper in Connecticut and vote yes or no, "Do you want his chairmanship taken away."
http://www.courant.com/news/politics/hc-lieberm...
.... is why anybody even listens to that punk. First I want to know how that dead woman got into his office.
""FORT WALTON BEACH, FL. - Lori Klausutis, a 28-year-old office worker for Rep. Joe Scarborough (R-Fl), was found dead in the congressman's district office. Police said preliminary findings from the medical examiner's office showed no foul play or any outward indication of suicide.""
... but if Scarborough doesn't like it, may be it was a better choice than I give him credit for.
The re-Thuglic party has become a sort of - Party of Whiners - if you will.
Boo hoo hoo you babies.
So they tear-down, de-legitimize, claw and snarl while they spew noxious waste. Nothing new here.
*
Nobody's listening, and nobody cares.
Go away you dead-ender.
are the people that need the bottom feeding tactics of people like Karl Rove and that scum that G H W Bush called a good personal friend. Atwater even said that he was morally bankrupt. But that is the type of people that are drawn to the Republicans and that the Republicans need to 'win' in the political arena. Good politics to these people is to attack in any way that leads to their'win'. It doesn't matter whether true or false.
i don't remember joe scarbee on the election ballot
and he sure wasn't elected president, so joe STFU.
Would it matter who Obama chose?
And will everything be received with an instant leap into full panic mode? I hope Obama has the strength to deal with these screaming mimis.
the beginning. If you liked Smear of the Clintons and Return of the Smear of the Clintons, then You'll rave at what will be coming soon to a TV near you. The next 4 years of Obama bashing has already begun and will make Clinton bashing look like comparing 'Sleeping Beauty' to Saw 1,2,3,4.
The last thing Obama needs to do is take advice from party hacks like Scarborough and Rove about how to run a White House operation. Look what happened to the last guy who took their advice. He's leaving office a disgraced failure, and leaving the rest of us with an economy in shables, a constitution in shreds, and with an international reputation at the lowest levels ever.
that makes it a great choice
these guys hate tough jews
fuck them
Period. Do you think I'm a jew hater too!
He will be choosing from the revolving door of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilaterals, the Skull n Bones, Bilderbergers, and so on.
How do I know?
He already has.
There will be no change, other than the wrapper.
Do you really think the plans of the Military Industrial Complex and the financial oligarchy will be redirected once he swears an Oath?
GMAFB
these 'predicters'. perhaps you should advise Wall Street. GOD knows they could your(heh)talents.
keep on sticking your head in the sand.
why would I advise wall street. they have all the democrats and the republicans in their pockets - and yours.
in case you forgot. this country was bankrupted by both parties - excuse me, the ONLY party.
as Eisenhower and Quigley have pointed out.
now run along to someone who cares to listen to you.I'm sure you're sitting in your basement now, ranting on what fools we all are. Take a hint. we don't care to hear what you have to say.
said like a lemming running off the cliff.
brillient! You actually know Me! You have powers beyond all others. You'd do well in backward country. They would probably make you King.
truthbetold ..
how right you are!!
To think that this man was once a congressman? Just goes to show that there is no intelligence test to be a congressman. No wonder the republicans have screwed up everything so bad. With a thought process like scarboro you are guarnteed to be wrong all the time.
Dang, Joe is really a twisted twit. I think Rahm is much too Right-Wing to be a Progressive...
...but then again... I'm still reellin'/reallin' from all of this...
Rahm is not nearly as bad as Tom Delay, he's not like choosing Russ Finegold either.
This is why I can't watch TV, 24hour, corporate news. As it was I could only stand to watch for about 3 min before I cut it off. Was there any truth told in that conversation at all? Oh yeah Clinton had a disastrous presidency, will ever recover from 8 years of relative peace and prosperity. Don't get me wrong Clinton did many things I didn't like at all and none of them had anything to do with adultery. Carter biggest mistake was to invite Tip O'Neil to his inauguration? OMG I hate these people! As if Obama could do anything that would stop the Republicans from doing everything in their power to block, derail, filibuster, and cry phony outrage at every bit of legislation the Democrats bring to the floor of both houses.
New age meet old bashing. I only watch TV for sports and movies. the relevent info I need I get right here.
It's to be outraged at anything anyone Democratic does.
The Faux Outrage News Network.
Faux outrage at flag pins.
Faux outrage at stained blue dresses.
Faux outrage at attack hoaxes.
Faux outrage at registration fraud.
Faux outrage at John Kerry's service.
Faux outrage at faux Joe the Plumber.
You can fool some of the people some of the time, but in the immortal words of George W. Bush (plagiarized from The Who), "we won't get fooled again."
As President, my first act would be to install Bill Moyers (or someone else who actually understands the media consolidation issues) as FCC Chairman.
Bolster public media, break up the conglomerates, create more competition and that will revive investigative journalism.
The best thing we can all do for next eight years is to completely ignore every idiotic attempt by right wingers to bait us. Turn off cable news.
Dang Joe, you’re bitching like this over the Chief of Staff position. Wait until Obama starts appointing Supreme Court Justices.
We care what Joe Scarborough thinks why, again?
What are the key things we need to know about him and what are the reasons for the resistance and hostility towards him. Are there past events we should in general know about?
and no.It's Joe talking. Nuff said.
He was a Clinton adviser, knows how government works and a pit bull.
Joe is a Bloviating Sore Loser.
I wonder if Joe Blov would have made this noise about Phil Gramm?
scarborough is a windbag. he was wrong 8 years ago and he's still wrong. guys like him never learn.
This guy is batshit crazy.
I hate his fucking show.
We need to get it off the air if possible.
It's O'Reilly lite; vitriolic logorrhea with a splash of nasal sarcasm.
And without the political support of a batshit Administration, it's time to have something better on MSNBC to which I can switch during CNBC commercials.
to watch Joe as how he treats the women on the set.Nothing more need be said.
Find anything interesting in your apartment lately, loser? Like a dead intern?
*
It is more like a television network choosing a murderer to lecture the nation on ethics.
These fools still think they are in charge!! Watching Fake Noise today, all I've heard all day is Obama has to go back to the Raygun model for leading the nation...C R A P !!!
The LAST thing we need to do is go back to Ronnie's model which DIDN'T WORK - look at the market's, look at the national debt, look at our standing in the world or pick a metric - Ronnie Raygun's policies DIDN'T WORK - THEY SUCKED! How stupid are these NutBags??
Joe needs to go over to fixed noise as soon as possible so when they get their broadcast license pulled - ALL of them can stand in an un-employment line...in the rain...
Sez the guy with the pretty young murdered staffer in his office.
Dead interns tell no tails.
Eat a bowl full of herpes, Joe!
Apart from some infuriating concessions Emanuel has made over the last couple of years, his lifetime progressive voting record percentage is quite consistently high,if Progressive Punch is any reliable gauge. However comparing him,or ANYONE on the Democratic side to Delay is absurd and frankly, childish Joey.
It has seemed today that some, like Joe the moron and Pat Buchanan, think that the GOP still has enough clout to make demands on what the new administration attacks. Losing brings such great sorrow for these morons. What does Joe Scarborough have to do with the congress of the US? That asshole lost reelection after the Clinton fiasco and was losing his job at MSNBC until Imus screwed up. If Joe doesn't like it, it must be a good choice for President elect Obama.
Why the Dem controlled congress failed miserably to end the war in Iraq...Rahm Emanuel
Obama picks a militant Zionist, from a militant Zionist family?
That's change I can't believe in.
Joe Scarborough's ego is out of control.
Why would Barack Obama - or anyone else except Mrs Scarborough if there is such an unfortunate - give a rat's ass what Joe thinks?
Find a bar, Joe, lay claim to the end stool and buy a round for the house. Then, and only then, the other drunks might pay attention to your opinion, at least until it's someone else's turn to buy.
Joe was having a particularly bad day today. He was outraged for five hours (extended coverage) this morning, starting with outrage, I mean "offense" that Peter Hart said the populace had voted for hope instead of fear. A diatribe followed while others around the table looked uncomfortable. That was in the 6 a.m. hour. Then in the 7 a.m. hour Brokaw came on and quoted Hart again...positively. :>)
Nominating Emmanuel is like nominating Delay?
Yeah...except for...
1. You didn't display your "outrage" when Delay was nominated.
2. The guy you on your side of the political spectrum is a convicted felon. The other is not.
It's time for MSNBC to consider letting this guy go. We are a center left country now and people like Scarboro are irrelevant now.
I predict rage will fill and flood Scar's beady little heart until it explodes in 2009
That it is unpatriotic and unamerican to ridicule our president (elect) during a time of war. I don't care how much his snivelin' and silly comparisons make me laugh. STFU and get over it loser!
I'm not sure if Rahm is the right guy or not -- but to say he is basically a republican indicates a severe lack of understanding of him or republicanism.
Joe cheered for the war because it weren't his legs getting blown off.
He, like everyone else in the world, knew it was all a lie but he promoted it for his own entertainment, making him roughly the equivalent of Goering.
I'd say God invented gallows for guys like this.
Yeah, two career bullshit artists, both of whom got away with murder. Delay is a fucking criminal , you stupid mother fucker. Obama will never give a shit what you think!
I don't like Emanuel at all, but Obama has earned the right to make decisions about his own administration. I think Emanuel would be crazy to take the job, since he would, as was pointed out, probably be giving up being Speaker of the House. However, if he takes it, Obama is going to be judged by the way Emanuel performs as Chief of Staff. Obama has never been by ideal candidate based on his politics (much too centrist), but we've had eight years of grotesque incompetence. Obama needs to have the chance to show us what he can do.
One person I'm really hoping Obama will find a position for in his administration is Harold Ford. Ideally Ambassador to the Most Remote Corner of the Universe would be the right place for Ford. He needs something really unimportant that will make him disappear for at least the next four years.
turn off the sound and imagine that he is a wig-wearing penis.
there. isn't that better?
Ummm, Go to Brad's Blog where you will find him stating "R.E. -Not change we can believe in". BF is knowledgeable and a staunch non-Republican. Forget that Joe said it, or the comparison to Delay. The point is that with Obama's first pick, combined with his key handler, Zbig Brzezinski, you've got two of the biggest war hawk insiders in Washington surrounding Mr. Change We Can Believe In. This sucks.
RWS
Relax, Obama is simply not going to make decisions that please you every time. He has earned the right to set up his own administration the way he sees fit with the personnel he deems best to help him govern. If, after six months or a year, he is governing in a way that is "hawkish" or otherwise objectionable then he will hear from his supporters and have to weigh those objections against his own priorities.
It is naive to think that Obama is anything other than what he has shown himself to be -- a centrist with some decidedly conservative tendencies. There were no genuine progressives in serious contention for the Democratic nomination. Obama's greatest contribution will not be in the wave of progressive legislation and programs he proposes or implements, because that isn't likely to happen. His contribution will be real enough if he changes the direction of this country, by carrying out his duties in an open and transparent way, by rejecting the excesses and lawlessness of Bush and Cheney, and by regaining respect for the US around the world.
Don't expect a new "New Deal." That just isn't Obama. I reconciled myself to that many months ago when I recognized that he clearly is not a committed progressive. He can be expected to change the way the executive branch does business, to be less beholden to corporations and moneyed interests, and to find solutions to problems that threaten to bring this country to its knees. Anyone who thinks Obama is going to champion dramatically progressive programs hasn't been paying attention.
He showed us who he is during the campaign and I dealt with my disappointment a long time ago. His health care program could be an improvement over what we have currently, but it will not solve the problem and he will leave it to a later president to boldly and courageously lead us to the only sensible solution -- a single payer system. He has probably looked at the reality of this country and decided that the people -- the real source of all our problems -- are not ready, not smart enough, not informed enough to embrace a single payer system. So, he'll do what he can. I think he's making a mistake to not be trying to move us to a single payer system, but I think he's right that the American people are still too stupid to accept the best possible solution.
When he chose Biden, embraced FISA, and made other decisions during the primary, he showed himself to be a conventional political thinker. He may be very skilled, the evidence suggests he is, but he is not a bold, innovative thinker. Expecting him to be will only lead to disappointment and anger -- both a waste of time.
This country is in a huge mess. We've got decades of stupidity, corruption, and wrongheadedness to repair. At best, Obama will get us turned away from the worst excesses of the past, but it will be up to a later president to take us the rest of the way. It will be enough if Obama changes course and effectively gets us through the next four years. If you expect him to be something he isn't and has never been, then you'll spend a miserable four years. Otherwise, you can keep positive pressure on him, accept that he's not the Second Coming, and hope that in four years we're in significantly better shape than we are now.
Rahm Emanuel sucks. He's a shitty representative of a part of the Democratic Party (Clinton's part) that I hate. However, if he leaves the House (it means he'll never be Speaker -- that's good for everyone) and does his job in the White House the way Obama tells him to do it, then it's entirely possible that his skills, which are not insignificant, will be put to good use. Obama is a hard-nosed politician. He showed that when he turned down public money. Did you complain then? He made a calculated, non-progressive, perfectly rational decision designed to maximize his chances of getting elected. He largely got a pass on that decision, but progressives should have been outraged. This guy is no idealist.
He intends to be a success. If at the end of his first term, he has managed to achieve most of his goals, my guess is the country will be a lot better off. It won't be where I want it to be, but there isn't anyone in this country today who has both the desire and talent to take us to where I'd like to go. Obama may have the desire and talent to take us to where he wants to go. Over the next four years I'll be deciding whether that's good enough; whether, on balance, it is worthwhile progress.
You point out something that I think is still largely unappreciated by the majority of people - mostly because political coverage in this country just doesn't delve into anything more than a scratch below the surface.
Obama is not so much a liberal, a progressive, or a centrist as he is a pragmatist. He recognizes the difference between what he would like to see done in a perfect world, and in what he can get done in the real world. If it takes gradual baby-steps to get the country where it should be, then he'll take those small steps - better to make a little progress than to stubbornly refuse to change anything.
And he'll make the choices for his administration in the same way.
...a kite to go fly for the next 8 years.
Look, O won. That's it. Face facts. He gets to pick his Chief of Staff without a chorus of BS from the peanut gallery. Bush did not take into consideration OUR views back in 2000. He was off to hegemony-land. Let O do his thing. He is #1 at the moment. Get behind that, or get off the field and go enjoy the wilderness. The tide has TURNED. There will NOT be a "Contract With America" in 2 years this time around. Look what that b/s brought... Lead, follow, or get out of the way (and in case you missed it, the "LEAD" slot just got filled by last night at 11PM EST...)
"Let's say you're...oh...JIMMY CARTER for example..."
Still the douchebag, eh Joe? I have a feeling Jimmy Carter's name is going to be used more in the next two years than it has in the last 25.
I love it...
Let's start TRASHING the whole thing the first week in...
YEAH... let's trash it all.... DUMP ON EVERYTHING...
Maybe Joe wanted the job. Looks like sour grapes.
Otherwise, what has Rahm Emanuel ever done to him? How does Emanuel rank with Tom Delay? No matter how Joe argues for this, there is no logic to the comparison.
Rahm Emanuel is part of the Project for a New American Century cabal whose efforts are to use the US military to make the middle east a fractured chaotic region, leaving Israel to dominate in military and economic power.
I remember an Emanuel comment made during Kerry's run for the presidency. When asked why the democrats were not in stronger opposition to the Iraq war, he said, "We don't want to be a one pony act." Translation...We are not in oppostion to the Iraq war.
This is a bad move on Obamas part. It looks like another US president is going to be controlled by the war crazy Likudites.
Hey Mika, if you know what's good for you, don't go anywhere with Joe because we all know what happened to his intern! In case you didn't know, Joe killed her and his republican friends helped him get away with murder!
the correct choice. I think Emanuel is one of the smartest guys around. We don't have to agree with every word that comes out of an adminstration or with all the policies. It will just be nice to actually know that the next administration is working in our best interests in most areas. They will be governing from and for the center, so the folks on the right and the left are not going to love a lot of stuff. We just need to take a deep breath and hand in there. And Scarborough doesn't like Rahm because Rahm's IQ is probably twice his.
Call me naive, but for my part, I'm going to give President Elect Obama the benefit of plenty of doubt before I allow my skin to crawl. It's only been a day or two and people are already carping about the man's choices?
Not saying anybody here should do the same, but I'm going to trust the man I've been believing in for a long time now until he gives me some reason not to..
Besides, the day I choose to let somebody like Scarborough ruin my day, that's the day people like him win..
David
Why on earth do we allow people with dual citizenship into political office in the US?
Emanuel is nothing more than another Israeli agent operating at the heart of our government. Yet again US interests will be subverted.
So much for bold new policy directions in the Middle East.
Somebody should tell him that we don't really listen to him, GOSH I HATE THAT GUY, He has never been right on anything, how this guy was a congressman or how he has a tv show, I will never freaking know
