Rep. Paul Ryan said Sunday that S&P's downgrade of U.S. credit was a "vindication" Republican actions and his budget plan, which would end Medicare as it exists today.

"I am not very surprised with the downgrade," Ryan told Fox News' Chris Wallace. "We more or less saw it coming because we are the wrong fiscal path. We'll find out what spike in rates we are going to get. Obviously not only does it hurt the federal government and its ability to close deficits, but it hurts people. Car loans, home loans, all these things are going to go up. And so, it is because Washington has not gotten its fiscal house in order."

And to me, this is just more vindication of our actions. We passed a budget, which according to someone with S&P yesterday, would have prevented the downgrading from happening in the first place."

"Isn't that like a doctor saying, 'I did the operation perfectly but the patient died?'" Wallace wondered. "In its announcement, S&P condemned the political dysfunction here in Washington, the grid lock here in Washington... isn't the failure to compromise part of the problem?"

"Both political parties are responsible for the mess we have right," Ryan admitted. "This is not a Democrat or Republican problem only. Both parties got us to where we are. I would argue, though, in the last couple of years, we've gone deeply in the wrong direction."

"Yes, we haven't been able to get the kind of compromise because our partners on the other side of the ailes had been unwilling to reform the [entitlement] programs that the cause of the problem."

The Huffington Post's Jason Linkins questioned Sunday what sort of vindication Ryan had been claiming.

"Yes, it was those actions, debt ceiling hostage-taking that led to the downgrade. And the end result of the negotiations was massive budgetary austerity," Linkins wrote.

Ryan is a mean, selfish, greedy, power hungry LIAR. If he once told the truth, his ears would fall off. I hope he keeps telling seniors that the GOP will dismantle Medicare and that the GOP has their sights set on dismantling Social Security. That will guarantee a Democrat will replace Ryan on January 3, 2013.

it does...

And by the way, Rachel Maddow said the same thing this morning. The reason they down graded the debt was because they didn't raise taxes. It is really pretty simple.

albabe's picture

Rachel said that "S&P" said that. She also said it's really hard to believe or trust someone who was offering AAA ratings on factions that didn't deserve it.

There is a difference.

They already are serfs... or as close to it as you can come to serfs without actually being one. They think they are offering "blowback" now... they will never offer any intelligent or informed "blowback" because of their self-imposed ignorance.

They will never "awaken..." They are far too Authoritarian to ever be awake. It's all about their Fear and they will believe the same old shit from the same old Talking Heads for-friggin'-ever.

They and "us" are already Corporate Fodder.

Yes, because in bizarro world where Rep. Ryan lives, what the Tea-GOP does and says is always right, no matter what. Now back here in the real world, Mr. Ryan and the rest of his ideological, intellectually challenged, non-fact based brethren are seen for the hypocrites and morons they are. Of course you don't have to be a genius when your only goal is to protect and enrichen your rich friends and corporations. But it does take a considerable portion of the public, who is pliable enough, anti-intellectual, willfully ignorant, and not willing to look at facts and consider them critically, which represents most if not all of the Tea-GOP.

g-man's picture

Ryan admits both parties to be at fault. All three branches of the US Government are broken and corrupt, the country is owned by banksters and the oligarchs. This is the definition of fascism. The downgrade is only a small step before US defaults and the empire crumbles. The Bush Jr. illegal wars cost $4 trillion and served to fatten the military-industrial complex profits. Meanwhile the final theft of America are the Pension Funds, so called entitlements that will magically disappear and then you can expect the increased hyper-inflation to destroy what's left of the lower and middle classes. The banksters win with the help of Congress, the White House and the Supreme Court. Good bye to the US empire. Maybe some peace might happen on planet Earth.

they are still making their own 'reality' and when they figure we are 'studying it'...they will change it again to their 'own reality'....

remarks made to Ron Suskind , Oct. 2004

"The aide said that guys like me "were in what we call the 'reality-based community' which he defined as people who 'believe that solutions emerge from you judicious of discernible reality;..."That's not the way the world really works anymore", he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality --judiciously -- we'll act again, creating new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors...and you...all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

Listen to Steve Benen: "Where would the GOP’s hostage fiasco rank on the list of modern Republican misdeeds?

The list, alas, isn’t brief. We could go through Hoover’s failures of the late 1920s, or perhaps Joe McCarthy’s crusade in the 1950s. Nixon’s crimes in the early 1970s are legendary, as are the many Reagan-era scandals — Iran-Contra, criminal fiasco at H.U.D., the Savings & Loan debacle — of the 1980s.

The more contemporary offenses are no doubt fresher in everyone’s minds: the Gingrich/Dole government shutdowns, the Clinton impeachment debacle, the Bush v. Gore scandal, the politicization of the Justice Department, the Plame scandal, the fiscal recklessness, the financial industry negligence that contributed to the 2008 crash, etc....

This wasn’t just another partisan dispute; it was a scandal for the ages. It’s the kind of thing that should scar the Republican Party for many years to come.

Indeed, consider the apparent consequences. This one radical scheme has helped lead to the first-ever downgrade of U.S. debt; it has riled financial markets and generated widespread uncertainty about the stability of the American system; and it has severely undermined American credibility on the global stage. Indeed, in many parts of the world, observers haven’t just lost respect for us, they’re actually laughing at us.

If we stick to domestic politics since the Civil War, can any other major-party scandal match this? Nothing comes to mind."

S & P used flawed data to draw their "conclusion" and even named the policies of your evil cult as one of the problems. Of course, S&P thought that Lehman Brothers and AIG were rock solid investments, too.

Of course, you are the genius that came up with a "plan" that destroys Social Security and Medicare which everyone, including the dopes of your own party are running away from as if it were political kryptonite. Damn, you are sure clueless, aren't you?

You are just another Teanderthal imbecile that will be lucky to be re elected. And another thing, you egotistic fraud, best you keep an eye on the returns next week in the recall elections in your state. It is a prelude of what is to come.

Because the real deciders, the people---have had enough of you and your dysfunctional cult.

madprogressive's picture

Of course it does, when you live in a world of talking white rabbits and pink unicorns. You see, the GOP has been really successful at creating the reality they want you to believe, not the reality as it really exists. So of course, Ryan believes the budget he put forth destroying entitilement programs is just what the market wants. And he's right, think of how much money they can make off vunerable old people, and off healthy middle aged and younger people, BILLIONS I TELL YOU, BILLIONS! So, he's right when he says this is what the markets want, its what they've always wanted. And Mr. Bears went on Fox news to carry water for them. Interesting he went on the GOP news network to sell the austerity and entitlement reform line, HUH!

Winski's picture

Once again, Ryan proves he is rank amateur and a worse politician. Hopefully, Wisconsin with it's stellar record of electing empty suits except for the Koch-mandated automatons, will leave nothing behind for Ryan to pick up on his way out of the state.... They will run him out soon..... Maybe they'll take him in Oklahomie or Uganda...

...by Wallace.

A better analogy would be that a person feels sick, comes into the doctor's office, and is checked out by two doctors. They say that he has a bleeding problem. The Rethug doctor wants to start surgery, to which the Democratic doctor says, "Well, if he has a bleeding problem, why would you want to cut him open? We can treat him with drugs." The Rethug doctor refuses to let the Democratic doctor administer the drugs, and says that the patient will die unless he performs surgery. Finally, the Democratic doctor relents, the Rethug doctor does the surgery and the patient bleeds out, dying on the operating table.

"See?", the Rethug doctor says. "He had a bleeding problem!"
