Multimillionaire Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney blasted former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Monday for the way he made a living in recent years.

During a NBC debate in Tampa, Florida, Romney charged that Gingrich had "peddled influence" in his role as an advisor for the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FHLMC), also known as Freddie Mac.

"You said you were paid $300,000 by Freddie Mac for an historian," Romney explained. "They don't pay people $25,000 a month for six years as historian. That adds up to $1.6 million."

As the head of venture capital firm Bain Capital, Romney made millions for himself by buying and selling distressed companies, sometimes eliminating thousands of jobs. Earlier this month, Romney claimed that the $374,327.62 he made in speaker's fees the most recent year were "not very much."

"As a business man, you know that the gross revenue of Bain wasn't your personal income," Gingrich told Romney. "We had a company. The company was being paid. My share was about $35,000 a year. ... What's the gross revenue of Bain in the years you were associated with it?"

"Very substantial," Romney admitted.

"Did Bain ever do any work with any company that did any work with the government like Medicare?" Gingrich pressed.

"We didn't do any work with the government," Romney insisted.

"I understand your technique which you used on McCain, you used on Huckabeee," Gingrich shot back. "You used consistently. OK? It's unfortunate."

Romney's claim that he never did any work with the government while at Bain may not be exactly true.

According to Deseret News, Bain purchased Damon Corp. in 1989, a medical medical testing firm that eventually pleaded guilty to defrauding the government to the tune of $25 million. The company later paid a $119 million fine.

Romney also has $500,000 invested in Freddie Mac's sister organization, Fannie Mae.

Last week, liberal comedian Bill Maher noted that the reason many Americans disliked Romney wasn't because of his massive wealth.

"It’s not because he’s rich," Maher said. "It’s how he got rich."

The former Massachusetts governor now has a net worth of up to $250 million. Gingrich sports a net worth of about $6.7 million.

The first casualty of republicanism is the truth.
Party politics are not only undemocratic, they are antidemocratic.

Romney's crew offered 1.6 million dollars for the 'missing' freddie mac docs that Newt doesn't think are important. That's a lot of jack for some leverage. Can this be for real? This is a little more than a 10k bet. Bounty hunters will be on this like stink on poop... lol

The Mitt Romney presidential campaign distributed the following email this morning:

"MISSING: NEWT’S FREDDIE MAC PAPERS

$1.6 MILLION REWARD

“Newt Gingrich’s Freddie Mac contract raises more questions than answers. His secrecy about his lobbying for Freddie Mac is troubling. No amount of bluster will hide the fact that Newt had his hand in Freddie Mac to the tune of $25,000 a month. The bursting housing bubble helped lead to the current economic crisis and Newt Gingrich has his fingerprints all over it. His shifting explanations amount to a shell game with the truth. Speaker Gingrich needs to fully disclose his work as a lobbyist for Freddie Mac.” -Gail Gitcho, Romney Communications Director"

Romneys' campaign and his super PAC (Restore Our Future) bought more than $5 million in additional airtime Monday, putting the total investment around the $13 million mark in Florida airtime, according to GOP sources.

Between the high cost of Florida air time and the different markets in the state this could go to $25 million among all the candidates. FOR A PRIMARY! wowza, must be nice to have that kind of money. good investment for the backers though. they usually get between 50 and 200 times the campaign money back in tax breaks and earmarks/favors.

The title of this post is not accurate or it misrepresents what happened here. Crooks and liars is better than this. Romney took Noot to the woodshed. Noot tried his bullshit to turn this around and he looked silly. Noot was actually squirming. "Romney makes Newt squirm" would have been a better title.

No.

I'll defend the title.

The point is Newt is wildly under reporting what he and his employees make in salary in order to avoid paying taxes.

So the title is accurate. (Though I might have phrased it "for claiming to make only"

...it's how he got rich that shows Romney's true character.

Nor should it be how Gingrich got divorced, either - it's how he got his divorces that show his true character as well.

such as that Romney managed to transfer 100 million dollars to his sons without ever incurring a single nickel of taxes. So what we have is a child of entitlement passing on his wealth to his children of entitlement. Children who don't have to fight messy foreign wars or pay the same tax rates as everyone else. Mr Romney assures us that any one who questions this is indulging in envy. I'd like to know why they shouldn't? Why should Romney's whole family have such an easy ride at everyone else's expense. Mr Romney tells us that everyone should want to be like him. But if everybody is a predator then who is the prey?

he claimed that his own wealth is entirely self-made from "hard work" and that he "didn't inherit any money" from his wealthy parents during the SC debate.

It appears Gingrich was using a loophole, paying his employes mostly in bonuses and stock options, to avoid paying Medicare taxes.

Mitt Romney is Wall Street millionaire. Wall Street millionaires are not job creators like Rockefeller or Ford who created millions of jobs for Americans and contributed real value to our nation. Romney Wall Street millionaires bring nothing but pain to our society. They make their money buying businesses, cutting jobs, outsourcing the rest, sell the assets, keep the profits. Romney Paid 13.9% Tax Rate in 2010
The former private-equity executive and Massachusetts governor earned more than half of his income from capital gains and dividends, which are taxed at a top rate of 15 percent, rather than the 35 percent top rate for ordinary income. http://www.newslook.com/videos/394950-romney-...

Immoral?

puunjab's picture

Romney berated Newt for:

1) Influence Peddling
2) Saying it was $300,000 when it was $1.6 million
3) Claiming to be a historian when he was clearly a consultant/lobbyist
4) Being hired by Freddie/Fannie's Top lobbyist.

Not one time did Romney attack Gingrich for making $35,000 a year and Romney never says $35,000 at all.

Newt brought that number up and claimed the rest went to his company. Romney countered at some point on a tangential point that no one pays a historian or his company that much money per month.

A: Your first sentence is correct. Newt attacked Mitt for HOW HE MADE his money.

B: Your headline for this story is a total and completely unnecessary lie. Romney never attacked Newt for making $35,000 and never implied or stated $35,000 was a lot of money or a little.

For some reason you had a perfectly legitimate story that made both Republicans look bad, and yet you still felt the need to lie with your headline.

WTF is wrong with you???
