Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry isn't backing off his claim that Social Security is unconstitutional. In fact, he is now calling the program a "monstrous lie."

In his book "Fed Up!", the Texas governor wrote that Social Security was put in place "at the expense of respect for the Constitution and limited government."

Last week, Perry Communications Director Ray Sullivan tried to walk back those claims by saying the book was "not meant to reflect the governor's current views on how to fix" Social Security.

But when confronted by ThinkProgress' Scott Keyes Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa, Perry said his views were still in line with the book.

"I haven't backed off anything in my book," Perry grumbled. "Read the book again, get it right."

Earlier that day at the The Vine Coffeehouse, Perry told a voter that Social Security was "ponzi scheme for these young people."

"The idea that they're working and paying into Social Security today, that the current program is going to be there for them, is a lie," he said. "It is a monstrous lie on this generation, and we can't do that to them."

It's quite saddening the number of younger people who have been convinced by the Faux-News-TeaParty Cabal that Social Security will not be around for them.

Even though their elders depend on it, and official studies prove it will still be around (even if benefits would be lowered if the cap isn't raised, it would still be around) - they still cling to the BIG LIE that's been repeated so many times.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

Of course it's not going to be around for them because Perry and his ilk are doing everything in their power to kill it off. Duh-er.

Nobody ever mentions it's fine for the next 25 years, that's about 24 years, 364 day, 23 hours, and 45 minutes longer than the average 'Merican attention span, so best not bring it up.

..."The idea that they're working and paying into Social Security today, that the current program is going to be there for them, is a lie,"

Conservatives are trying to make damn sure it isn't there for us. I've been paying 6% of my gross salary for a third of a century into SS, and the government has been "borrowing" that money the whole time to pay for other things so that they don't have to "raise taxes" on the wealthy. SS is NOT an entitlement, it is an OBLIGATION. Now they want to act like it would be SO inconceivable to raise taxes on the wealth to make sure those OBLIGATIONS are met. Any politician that tries to take away my benefits from SS or Medicare is a sworn enemy to me. In about a dozen years, it will be time for my country to PAY UP. It's not ponzi scheme until you renege on payments due.

WWFSMD?

If a Private company offered a pension plan like S.S. their officers would be arrested!

Social Security makes promises it can't keep, unless it raises taxes on the young. My generation those over 50 will reap more than those younger than 50. Not as good as my Grandmother who collected 10 times what she paid into the system.

"It’s because you have an obligation to yourself. Because our individual salvation depends on collective salvation." - Barack Obama

Who has been arrested for the big banks scam ? SS is solvent for at least thirty years and then can pay out at a 70 percent rate with no changes. What is criminal is that the money in your so called pension plan has been stolen. There is not any problem with SS and it's not supposed to be a pension.

these coprocephalics believe in is the one they feel towards their WALLETS. They feel NO obligation towards others at all. They're probably the LEAST "Christian" people I can think of, and that out of every other religion on earth. Hell, every single Buddhist I've ever met has been orders of magnitude MORE Christian than this walking garbage heap.

Don't count on it after that! I hope your're older than 70. I'll fight tooth and nail not to change S.S. anytime in the near future! So will my fellow seniors citizens, and we all vote!

Rick Perry: Social Security Is a 'Monstrous Lie'

What the f*** is Perry talking about!?!?! There are no details restricting jack sh** on the banks or Wall Street in that law. What a moron.

Most of what comes out of Rick Perry's mouth is a monstrous lie. From his so called "Texas Miracle" (low paying jobs that can't even support people) to this.... it's all lies as big as Texas.

"official studies prove it will still be around (even if benefits would be lowered if the cap isn't raised, it would still be around) ".

You seem to agree with Perry. If the benefits are lowered then social security as we know it is a lie. Like medicare, benefits from social security may be lowered. As hard as that is to accept it is possible. I frequently hear that the right seeks "the end of medicare" and then in parenthesis (as we know it). The point is that as we know it may not fly unless we modify "as we know it". To ensure small or modest changes to these programs we need to have revenue increases that arise from closing tax loop holes and tax increases on the highest earners, prudent spending cuts, some defense cuts, structural change in trade policy that support job creation at home and Dems and Repubs both willing to stand up to too big to fail banks. It will be a group effort.

Taxes will increase, benifits fall, and inflation will render social security a joke!

When you join the riots!, you will remember this post;)

You should have saved for your own retirement!

elloco's picture

I tend to agree with you. My point was that neither the far left nor right will decide. Change will come from we they are finally forced to compromise. At which point it will likely be too late for some of the very reasons you note.

And the banksters milked it all away in 2008, and all you had left was the SS safety net to save you from freefall?

Yes, save. Yes, save Social Security. No, skip the Darwinian/Rand angle, please.

"the government has been "borrowing" that money the whole time to pay for other things"

Jscottfur, I have been paying into the sytem longer than you have (that's a long time!). Would you agree that both Dems and Repubs have been "borrowing" our benefits?

Jscottfur's picture

...and any Democrat that assists the wing nuts in defaulting on this OBLIGATION is just as much an enemy as the Cons.

WWFSMD?

Then we can agree that both parties are f'ked up. That would be a good start.

ron's picture

to realize is that the trust earns interest off the money that is borrowed. It only makes the trust stronger.

dadams's picture

SS should be around for a long time to come, but
it's not if the fucking politicians, both dems and repugs
keep borrowning and not paying back the funds they
borrow. the gop/teabaggers are good at stealing the
funds from solvent programs, then calling them in default.
fuck all the gop/teabaggers.

When the train wreck happens!, remember you should not have put your faith in government!

Your GOD is whatever you put your faith into! Christians have their GOD, same for the Jews, and the Arabs. Of these groups only the Jews will control the worlds wealth, and you will not be the master of your destiny. Your children will hate you for selling their birthright.

When the business interests... pushed through the first installment of civil service reform in 1883, they expected that they would be able to control both political parties equally.
Carroll Quigley

While one holds up their right hand, their left hand is in your pocket. Then the other party holds up their left hand and says look at this, their right hand is in your pocket! With the corp. media running interference, and public schools refusing to teach people to think for themselves.

I've been watching the train wreck in the making ever since I understood what was going on. Bill Clinton was not the only student of Carroll Quigley! One of America's great insider proffessors.

The history of the last century shows, as we shall see later, that the advice given to governments by bankers, like the advice they gave to industrialists, was consistently good for bankers, but was often disastrous for governments, businessmen, and the people generally.

I voted for the current President! :) What they don't understand is that I believe what Nikita Khrushchev said! "We will bury you" The actual verbal context was: "Whether you like it or not, history is on our side."

The American people lost the war of 1812, but few who know what the was was really about understand this. Then the American people lost again, in the War of 1860. People blindly call a Civil War, because that's what their school teachers called it. Having no clue what a Civil War is!

Soon America will be absorbed into a global union out of fear, they will sell their children into slavery because their leaders tell them "It's for their own good!"

Notice Perry is not talking about job creation.
He's not talking about stimulating the economy.
He's not talking about ending the wars.
Notice Perry is not talking about reining in the MIC.
He's not talking about the plight of the middle class.
Instead Perry is talking about abortions, ending social programs, and praying to Jesus.

All of this during his campaign - a time when he has to be on his best behavior... and yet we can already see his horns and bat wings.

Right now, he's running for the nomination, which means appealing to the far right fringe of the Republican party that are over represented in the primaries. Should he win the nomination, I'm guessing he'll pretend none of this was said and try to sound much more reasonable to the general electorate.

Where states "compete" with each other to gain more goodies for themselves than weaker-less "competitive" states.

Would the size of a state be considered? Or would a state like Rhode Island be expected to "compete" with a huge state like Texas?

I thought as a "union" we are supposes to work collectively for the greater good once called America.

Perry needs to ratchet down on the testosterone shots.

Rick Perry demonstrates all the classical traits of a psychopath, lack of empathy, shallow emotions, lying and manipulativeness, irresponsibility, poor behaviour controls, remorselessness and, egocentricity and grandiosity.
From being unable to control his temper when challenged in public, to making the most horrendous legislative regulations to gain campaign contributions and now sticking it to the most vulnerable the elderly.
Typical of a psychopath, when challenged on a public lie, glibly and without shame they just lie about it, even when both lies are a matter of public record, they show zero shame or embarrassment.

Kreskin's picture
