Rand Paul promises to filibuster everything over debt ceiling
A group of tea party Senators plans to filibuster over raising the debt ceiling, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) announced in an interview that aired on C-SPAN Sunday.
"I was part of a group this week that said, 'No more,'" Paul explained. "We're tired of talking about extraneous issues. We've had not one minute of debate about the debt ceiling in any committee. We haven't had a budget in two years. We haven't had an appropriations bill in two years."
"So I'm part of the freshman group in the Senate that's saying, 'no more.' We're not going to let them go to any issue if we have a say in it. We will filibuster until we talk about the debt ceiling, until we talk about proposals, and many of us in the conservative wing are going to present our own proposal next week. And that is to raise the debt ceiling. We will actually vote in favor of raising the debt ceiling next week if we can but it will be contingent upon passing a balanced budget amendment."

Progressives also proposed a budget, I bet it does a lot better at balancing the budget than yours, Ayn Rand.
But I wouldn't be surprised if it became the media's new "serious" budget.
Also, am I hearing him right? He wants to have an omnipotent say in every issue, despite being in the minority? That's not very "founding father"y of him. How very ironic of the one who always talks about there being winners and losers in society, and not encouraging forced equality, wanting more than his share, despite being in the smaller party! How very communist of you, Paul. Do your airhead constituents know?
...Sorry about the rant. The guy just rubs me the wrong way.
Now, who's behaving like a 'dick' ?
"contingent upon passing a balanced budget amendment"
Because he can hold the debt ceiling hostage until we amend the constitution?
Good luck with that. Good thing the only promise Randy keeps is the promise to be ridiculous.
"The guy just rubs me the wrong way." - Copy that - me too.

Ever notice that for being such lovers of the Constitution and literal interpretations and all that , that they are usually the ones bringing up amendments to change it. Me smells inconsistency of message.
There's only one word for this attitude: extorsion.
Well, TWO words...the second being: childish...
What the hell were you thinking when you voted this loose cannon in???
let's call them the Pissant Party
The republican grandstanding and hostage taking on this subject will lead to invoking of the 14th amendment, section 4 by the President so our national debt can't be used as a political football anymore.
Damn right! Damn the Republithugs! Damn the torpedo's!
The President must go over their heads.

I say we should lower the debt ceiling. Cut the hell out of Defense spending. Military spending should not be considered as Defense. Defense is the biggest waste. Defense bribes politicians and get trillions of dollars in contracts. Cutting defense will pay for Social Security, Medicare, Medicade, universal health care, schools, roads, teachers, and everything else Republicans want to rape and destroy. As a combat veteran, twice wounded former Marine, I am always insulted with "Defense Spending" being treated as "Military Spending".
" Defense is the biggest waste."
No kiddin' we could fully fund all kinds of stuff on just the waste in the military spending.
It is maddening. We could cut the "military" spending by half and still have the biggest and best on the planet.
Talk about throwing money at something - military is a giant sinkhole of tax dollars and the politicians want to pretend it is the teachers, the unions the public employees, the pensioners, the seniors, small business anything but what it really is.
"I know that there are people who do not love their fellow
man, and I hate people like that! " ~ Tom Lehrer (1928 - )
Perfectly and succinctly put.
Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR, PBS and ACORN crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401k's, took trillions in taxpayer-funded bailouts, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses and paid no taxes? Yeah...me, neither.
Can I ask where you get your numbers from? You say by cutting defense spending, it will pay for all these things. 2010 budget defense was 24% of the federal budget, health care was 24% (and that isn't universal), pensions(mainly SS) 21%, welfare 12%. Can you explain how cutting defense spending will pay for all of that?

If they cut all military spending to zero, the govt would still run a deficit.
"If they cut all military spending to zero, the govt would still run a deficit."
If they cut ALL government spending we couldn't payback all our debt for 5 or 6 years.
Such is our conundrum. Seems a few people have it all and the rest of us have the bill.
I'm betting if you look at our outlays of government money you will find that the vast amount of it goes to corporations. Yes, they provide government services with that money. Most are aware of how incomplete that concept is to our discussion so there is no need to repeat it here.
It's intended as government of by and for the people. That is where the focus of our spending should be. Or we can just accept government of by and for the monied elite. Your choice.
why not an amendment instead that no state get back more in federal spending than it pays in taxes? Is that lots of puckering I hear in the red (welfare) states? Let's see how badly they really want a balanced budget.
or does Rand appear kinda slow and dimwitted?
Compared to what?
A brick? :-)

Yes, how do you think he got into the Tea Bagger party?
what they are...........libertarians,i like lizard-tarians,but i'm twisted.
....the fools do not realize,a population that can ,..... not paticipate .............in the 'economy'...,can not keep it viable!..........."we are listening,.......and we're not blind.,......this is your life....this is your time."
Everybody has their skills. We all have something good to offer. Unfortunately when it comes to things like this it seems there is a large portion f the population that is content with slogans and bumper stickers.
What was Michelle Bachmanns big applause line...Obama one term president...something anybody can say. That is what they admire.
Deep thought is not one of their skills..hence they sometimes do appear slow and dimwitted.
Or that's what I think.
Is that you Aqua Buddha? Why do you hate America?
BTW...
Filibustering the debt ceiling will guarantee that you don't get another dime in donations from the banks and Wall St. firms. They will lose lots of money if the debt ceiling is not raised. Go for it genius!!
Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.
Wall St. firms and banks are the enemy and we are supposed to want them to lose money.
you should be thanking him genius.

Let me apologize. I really am very sorry that snarky insults are beyond your grasp.
Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.
Wall St. will make a lot of money if the debt ceiling is raised! (silly)
Obama will bail them out again (with our money) if we raise the debt ceiling.
was that a reverse snark?
Obama was the recipient of all the Wall campaign donations!!!! (thats why he wants to raise it)
audit-prosecute-incarcerate
This is not about a bailout. The government has already spent this money. Did Rand Paul default on any of his business loans?
Has anyone ever approached this guy and told him just how stupid he is?
He has been told, he just can't understand - (too stupid for that)

And got their head stomped on.
Paul's idiotic gibberish is a symptom of a larger problem. Namely, that Americans teach their children generation after genera ion that everyone is born knowing ever thing. That there is no such thing as expertise.
That each person knows as much as any other perosn--i.e., everything..
In school, if a kid says something truly moronic, the teacher is not allowed to tell him he is wrong. Everyone says, there is no truth, my opinion is as good as your truth. When I was a teacher, they actually expected me to lead "discussions" of subjects concerning which the students were ignornant.
In a civilized society, no one would listen to Paul on economics because he knows nothing abut economics. For Paul to say anything about economics is like Paul Krugman doing operations for cataracts.
But lefties also opine on subjects where are ignorant-- Most notably in fanatical defense of racial and sexual discrimination. And in defense of mothers murdering their babies. Anyone that knows anything about biology or any other physical science knows that human life begins at conception. The word fetus is merely an adjective, like "teen" or "middle-aged." Similarly the useless idiots Say "men should have nothing to say about a woman murdering her children, because no man had anything to do with her becoming pregnant." Imagine, they are so ignorant they don't even know that there is a connection between sexual intercourse and pregnancy.
So before anyone says libertarians like Paul are the only drooling idiots, take a close look at the "base" of Democratic party.
The true answer is for everyone to become convinced that she does not know everything. That there actually ae such things as truth and expertiese. But by the time someone is 20 or 30 it's too late to change their delusions. So maybe Pol Pot was right in thinking he had to get rid of all those over 18 and start fresh. .
^^^^ A bunch of center right nothingness there, Folks, I'll never get the 2 minutes back that I used reading that slop.
Harry Chapin wants you.
That you were a teacher explains a lot about discourse in this country. I know of no one that believes children are born knowing "ever (sic) thing." That is the first of your delusional statements. It is hardly surprising that you would devolve into a screed against abortion. If you don't believe in it, don't have one. Your support of Pol Pot however is puzzling, don't "murder" babies, wait until they are over 18, then kill them.
I am glad that you are no longer warping the minds of tomorrow.
"The witness stand is a lonely place to lie." David Boies
What in the world does the debt ceiling have to do with abortion??? Ohhhhh yeah that's right. To Republicans EVERYTHING has to do with abortion.
Grow up! We live in a democracy. We live with laws. And the law isn't on your side on this issue.
There are much more important issues that need to be addressed other than taking away the right of a woman to decide what is best for her own body.
This is NOT the time to go down that road. Get over it!
The Republican way is to change the law, and grandfather in no liability for previous infractions.
See; wiretapping, torture, rendition, military courts for civilians, etc.
Clearly they are not the only drooling idiots.
Wow, imagine that, wanting a discussion on subjects. Forcing them to memorize some factoid to be instantly forgotten after the test is definitely a better way to teach, rather than discussing a subject so that it's understood WHY the factoid is important.
The title says it all.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
Apart from comparing Obama and Rand Paul and finding no difference between them, which I think is utterly crazy, you go on to find sympathy with a mass murderer who killed @ 3M people. Because it's better to kill millions of people who disagree with you - they get difficult if they're not brainwashed before age 12..
That's like saying 'Hitler had a lot of good ideas'.. You really don't have to say anything else.
You also go on to say 'everyone knows' .. about a bunch of things which are highly contested..
You've cultivated several terrible, self-destructive mental habits - I doubt I could even talk to you about the weather.. you're basically an uncivilized a**hole. I - and I'll bet most C&L types - will do everything possible to keep you & yours out of power. You're insubstantial and untrustworthy and dangerous.

I agree that Rand Paul (or, as I call him, Ron-Paul II) has nothing to say worth considering about economics, but on everything else, jan814 is a bloomin' arsehole.
I spend years in schools where teachers tried to blow wingnut fairy dust into my head, but, thanks to the fact that I had learned to read before I set foot in a classroom, knew it was absolute bull.
I can find lots of places for disagreement here friend but lets not focus on that.
Here's the problem I have with this whole money discussion.
Ever notice that when the economy tanked it did it all over the world, nearly in unison. It wasn't the republicans or democrats that tanked Ireland or Greece. Yet they all fell at the same time. HMMM time for deeper thought.
All of those with the private central bank model.
We are arguing about republicans and democrats when the real situation is far different. We should be arguing about the top 1% or 2% and the rest of us. That is where the battle lines are drawn. Much of the rest of the world understands this. Do you?
It seems to me that if this money is causing such a ruckus that we might all want to independently look into it more and see just what it is and how it is used. But I guess one would have to care before one did that.
teabegger. All whine and no substance.
When it comes to women and their bodies, mind your own business. I have yet to hear one "Pro-lifer" state that they will: pay for all expenses for these pregnancies, pay for all the expenses of raising the children from these pregnancies, guarantee that these children will be loved and nurtured, guarantee that these children will receive good health care and guarantee the best education from pre-school to graduate school. Your only concern is for a zygote and not the final product.
@Jan814, shouldn't you be under a bridge somewhere harassing billy goats?

If the financial rules of the world are changed, the debt limit not raised and the U.S. is not put into default by "the Street", then all bets are off for the world economy.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
Rand is a good little dog for the rabid right and the corporate power that infests our government like a cancer.
All Rand Paul (sounds like a corporation, doesn't it?) has accomplished is a gift to Obama. Why? Well, if the most conservative -- Tea Party, OK? -- pols are now agreeing to raise the debt ceiling, as Rand Paul indicates, Obama can only disappoint an equally small contingent in the Democratic Party (the progressives) as well as those independents who consider themselves far left of center. The mistake was made when the White House went along with maintaining Bush's tax giveaways to the billionaires (I call them the Koch Brothers Corporations, or KBC, a de facto PAC unto itself, funded by 1% of the population). What the Lord giveth He findeth it difficult to taketh away. The damage was done, and the middle class will go on funding larger and larger portions of the federal tax until the People demand a truly graduated tax scheme. But Rand Paul's remarks help Obama save face. He pushed through some subsidy-killers and (all too well-carped) corporate jet-type loopholes. So he did his part in attempting to balance the budget.

I'd like to ask you and your cronies if your proposal is two years in the making? If not why not? I know you were not in office but were all of these thoughts stewing in the back of your mind during that time and you are now ready for them to burst forth like a zit from a teenagers blackhead? Just asking...
Well then, let's make sure the first thing that gets voted on is Defense Spending or vital funding for his own (welfare) state.
Refusal to raise the debt ceiling predictably devastates our economy. Anyone who stands in the way of raising it should be charged with treason for offering aid and comfort to our biggest enemy, China.

As the poem here in Kentucky goes and I'll paraphrase, politics in Kentucky are the damndest.
Jack Conway may have lost it by going after Paul's dope smoking college years, all the while Paul played up his "maturity?" and faith. The faith he found just after he decided to run for the Senate. Christian faith is a BIG fucking deal here in Kentucky. With the addition of another dinosaur park, and the taxpayers giving them a 30 million dollar tax break, this only reenforces our ranking as a state of uneducated citizenry. Kentucky certainly ranks at the lowest end of an educated populace. Just note the re election of Mitch McConnell all those years.
Kentucky also takes about $1.50+/- from the Fed while contributing $1.00. While greedy coal mine operators/owners laugh at the epa and rich horse owners invest in the best lobbyist the horse racing industry they can buy. Republicans insult our intelligence.
The GOP has been filibustering every piece of legislation proposed by the Democrats or endorsed by Obama for the last three years. Is Baby Paul trying to horn in on Ky Senior Senator McConnell's act? I don't know why the Republicans think this is a big threat anymore. They're going to filibuster everything anyway.
