Police on Monday physically dragged several Occupy Tampa protesters from an event with Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum and cited them for trespassing.

One of the men had thrown glitter at the candidate as he was he was giving his closing remarks. WESH cameras caught a man in a suit wrapping his arms around the activist and forcing him towards the door.

"Stop the hate!" the protester shouted.

A police officer was seen dragging a second activist across the floor by the hand before another officer picked up the man's legs.

Glenn Costa, Joseph Perry, Michael Fernandez and Rebecca Rubright were all cited for trespassing, but not arrested.

Last week, protesters with Occupy Charleston also showered the former Pennsylvania senator with glitter over his opposition to gay rights.

When I watch those old black and white movie clips of MLK and others being hosed down and beaten for demanding their rights, then I see this shit happening in 2012 - all I can think is "these are the newer colorized versions of the same type of bullshit.

How little we have learned from our own history.

It doesn't matter who you are, or what color you are: If you get in the way of the right wing fascist agenda, they will try to intimidate you into submission, beat you down if that doesn't work, or find you an ad in the obituary page.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

MLK had approximately one billion times more class than some twerps throwing glitter around.

taochiapet's picture

i'll give you that the civil rights movement was all about 'class', but not in the way you mean it.

Well I didn't say that, but OK wordsmith.

So, if I complain about the fish next Friday at our American Legion, I can be removed by the police for trespass? Did the Occupy people forget to sign the loyalty pledge?
..........
"The outburst occurred at the end of the rally, just as Santorum received a standing ovation from nearly 700 people at American Legion Post 347."

"Smokey Weist, vice-president of the Tri-County Tea Party, was among the crowd near the front of the stage who had specks of glitter on his clothes.

"I was getting hit, but didn't bother me," Weist said, praising the quick police action. "The security people took care of them so fast."

"We had some intelligence that this same type of incidence occurred at other (Santorum) rallies in South Carolina and Iowa, and that there was a potential that it could happen here, so we were prepared for it," said Sgt. Ralph McDuffie of Lake County Sheriff's Office.
McDuffie said the protesters were not arrested, but were given trespass warnings for being on private property. They were escorted off the grounds. "

You don't throw shit at people. You don't go after a presidential candidate with a security deal especially. They don't know what your intentions are. Ask Gabby Gifford about high risk environments meeting and greeting voters.

I support the Occupy message, but I think the glitter-bombing people need to expect consequences of being cuffed. If someone came up and threw something my direction, I'd expect it could be something more severe than glitter. Especially if I were one of these RW dolts.

Perhaps you'd like to tell us WHO was HURT or INJURED in this "extremely SCARY and FRIGHTENING" exchange?

We're WAITING.

Johnny Drama's picture

Using YOUR rationale...they ought to do away with rope lines and supporters shaking hands with candidates because MY GOD!

You don't know what they're INTENTIONS are.

JustMyWords's picture

If this was an open forum where anyone could walk up out of the blue without going through security, you might have a valid point. If, however, this was an event where people were largely pre-screened and had to go through security to enter - and an awful lot of these events are - then it's not as though security would need to react to a possible life-threatening attack. And the handcuffing and dragging occurred after security after the glittering had already occurred, so they weren't dealing with a safety issue.

Actually, what should bother Santorum (or any politician, for that matter) isn't getting glitter-bombed. It's the fact that the security detail didn't stop the protester before he got close enough to toss the glitter in the first place. If it HAD been a physical attack, their response would have been too little too late.

should've made it easy to slide 'em into the vans...

in protest is stupid, and only feeds the right-wing propaganda machine.

Any occupy protester who does this should be thrown out of the occupy movement.

We get enough bad press as it is without this kind of stupid shit.

Some people's lives actually revolve around hatred and bigotry. I'd suggest that most of those in attendance fall into this category.

Auximinus's picture

I agree with their message, but this glitter bomb stuff is just retarded. You can't go around throwing stuff at people and expect to not get your ass kicked. If you're going to fight, fight honorably. Leave the petty stunts to the GOP.

but that's not their only message. Their other message is that other people don't have rights. Or rather that their own "rights" supercede the rights of others. I said this about the other glitter incident. Santorum whatever you may think of him is a presidential candidate. Such people have secret service protection for a reason. The security officers do not know what their intentions are when they do stupid things like this. When and if someone gets hurt in one of these incidents it will be entirely the fault of these occupy goofballs. There isn't only one Jared Laughner in the world you stupid stupid grandstanding idiots. I hope my point of view isn't unclear.

Yeah, because comparing a guy throwing a handful of glitter to a lunatic who SHOOTS PEOPLE IN THE HEAD just makes your point so very clear.

See, Shalabi, maybe they knew they'd get dragged out and maybe arrested, but it was worth it to speak up instead of cowering in the dark.

I know people have and are still talking endlessly about it before, but even given this 'over-the-top' glitter bomb BS in the specific case at hand, I personally want to re-drive home the notion that this 'Liberal' Media is virtually non-existent as far as legitimate political discourse in the U.S.A is concerned. And for what does pass as legitimately progressive is overwhelmed by the sheer investment, infrastructure and popularity of Fox News, Talk Radio and think tanks by Right-Wingers. Did you ever see a situation where police detained and locked up one of the Teabagging wing nut trollies who brought guns to their rallies and spewing all this eliminationist crack on what they wanted to do to Obama and anyone outside of their affiliated 'group'?

I swear this is just like the conservative and racist Right ass-hats who try to compare the Civil Rights and Civil Disobedience demonstrations to examples of anti-Americanism or criminal behavior. The GOP & Tea Party land its affiliates literally drown in their own hypocrisy so much of the time I think they breathe it as an alternative to actual air...Appropriate or not, Santorum deserved that much if nothing else for pandering that Birther BS @ this stage of the campaign anyway.

President Obama is like the AHCA his administration miraculously passed: marginally helpful, efficient enough to be built upon, and will only become a uniform disaster if Republicans win 2012 & repeal it (with all the other good he did)!

...for trespassing? That appeared to be a public school. Since when can taxpayers be trespassing in a public building at a public event? I guess they had to come up with something to charge them with. They couldn't risk arresting them for exercising their rights or a few Americans might have taken exception.
