Most Americans these days can barely afford a friendly wager of $5 but Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who has claimed he's part of the middle class, tried to bet fellow-candidate Rick Perry $10,000 Saturday night.

During ABC's debate at Drake University in Iowa, Perry noted that Romney had suggested in his book that the health insurance mandate he signed into law as the governor of Massachusetts should be the model for the country.

"You know what?" Romney replied. "You've raised that before, Rick."

"It was true then," Perry interrupted.

"I'll tell you what, 10,000 bucks?" Romney asked, holding out his hand to seal the deal. "Ten thousand dollar bet?"

"I'm not in the betting business," Perry declared.

In June, Romney told a group of unemployed people in Florida that he was “also unemployed.”

Returning to Florida in September, the candidate claimed that he was part of the middle class.

Romney told a group of workers at a steel plant in November that federal employees made more than he did.

The former Massachusetts governor has a net worth estimated at up to $250 million.

Isn't gambling still illegal?

Milquetoast's picture

without permission from the govt is illegal.

However bets between individuals are fortunately not yet regulated by our govt.

Of course after the Citizens United decision the question of whether or not Perry and Romney are individuals or corporations is debateable.

Money.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

medical marijuana. Thanks Obama--Holder. You're really an obvious improvement on the Rethugs. NOT!

THIS is what democrats are doing back-flips over???

C'mon. Anyone of you guys, back when you were 10-years old, ever say, "Oh, yeah! I'll betcha' a MILLION dollars!"

Sit back and enjoy the suicide ride of the Rethuglican Party. Stop spending my donated dollars (few though they are) on ads to run during Republican primaries. Why run ads when you don't know the final candidate? Save your powder.

I would have no objection if the Dems ran creative ads slamming conservatism, slamming conservative economics, foreign policy, health, defense, etc., and showing how conservatives have been wrong about everything for the past 60-years. That would be productive pump-priming!!

But you see, it's HYPERBOLE when a 10 year old does it playing Monopoly during "family night" at home or on the playground at school.

It's HYPOCRISY when a hugely wealthy politician (few politicians aren't) trying desperately to appear like he's one of the hoi polloi shows his inner self by suggesting a Las Vegas high-roller bet.

Even more hypocritical was so-called Mormon pastor Romney suggesting a bet at all:

"In Mormon theology, gambling is not rigorously forbidden, like smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol or beverages with caffeine; it is viewed as a lesser transgression, an evil “based on the morally wrong philosophy of getting something for nothing, of taking money without giving fair value in return."

Perhaps we did say things like that as kids, but this is an adult wanting to become the next president of the United States.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

you are a ten year old child with your "Democrats" this and "Republican" that mentality. Mr. Romney just tried to wager seven months of my income and his disconnect is the issue

.

Better still, Romney is betting the money he got by laying off workers.

No what we are doing back flips is that idiots like you are allowed to vbote and people like Willard (Mitt's real name) make claims that he is middle class while he is worth more than 200 million. Real middle class people cannot make 10,000 dollar bets. Because the policies of the Republican party has drained theirfunds.

This article has one grave error that needs to be corrected. It claims that Romney has a net worth of $250 million? This is clearly wrong. He might own 250 mil, but he has the same worth as what I scraped off my shoe yesterday. Please try to get it right next time.

The whole thing sucks. Vote for Obama or you'll get one of these homicidal clowns. That's FUBAR.

He is unemployed (unless you count corporations giving him money for basically nothing unless he gets elected). Of course a lot of independently wealthy people are also unemployed.

see the post above citing the sentence from the Romney book first edition. I can't give you the page number because I did not buy the book. Perhaps some enterprising researcher will locate the full annotation before this all blows over

Palli's picture

Notice how deftly the media makes it a betting challenge not an integrity issue.

Here's the sentence that Romney redacted from the second edition of his book:
“We can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country.”
The same thing he was referring to Romneycare, the Massachusetts version of Obamacare.
If there was any fair reading comprehension among the GOP, the Perry campaign would be $10,000 richer or would Perry have pocketed it?

the Rethug candidates. Because, we know a few things. Like:

1- the election game is rigged, by Diebold, Rethug control of administrative entities that can manipulate and suppress the vote, and of course, the Citizens United SCOTUS decision.

2- Obama is not much of an alternative (look at the DINO's record, his pursuit of Assange and Manning, capitulation to 1%, failure to do anything worthwhile about the major problems in the country, etc. on ad nauseum), even if all the Rethugs are insane except for maybe Huntsman and Romney.

3- the DC Dems are not working for the 99%, except for a small handful in Congress with a few Independents helping.

4- It's a waste of energy to pay too much attention to these Rethug idiots. Better to work on an alternative to the totally corrupt and compromised American election system.

The answer, proved so clearly, is the Occupy movement. Time to expand and enhance the basic premise(s) of the movement. Time for a return to THE RULE OF LAW.

just saw a record month in playing on the Vegas Strip. Apparently the rich are doing just fine...

are that at the end of the summer in 2008, the harbor was pretty empty. It was bad in 2009 too, got a little better last year.

This year it was packed with nice boats, some very large and top of the line. I thought, well, that's a good sign, maybe the economy is picking up. Then I looked closer over a few days/weeks and the boats were much bigger and more luxurious. A new service yard was built on the harbor with the biggest travel lift (for hauling out boats) in the state. The business is very good for the city, and I may benefit a bit from the local economy doing better (trickle down?), but it is depressing that it is very definitely the very wealthy who are doing very well.

Had to look it up, but there is a $10,000 US bill with the portrait of Salmon B Chase, Lincoln's Treasury Sec'y, still technically in circulation (336 remain).

because going in or out of the country, and for other transactions, the Feds now mandate that one declare any amount $10K or over in cash. They say it is because of the war on drugs, the war on terrorism, and most importantly, the war on the 99%. So, if you want to acquire that bill (and can afford to), best keep it with your Lincoln memorabilia collection.

That law is applied internationally and has been 10K for decades. It always pisses me off, too. It's none of their gd business. Of course, I never have 10K, but any money I do have I earned and should be able to take it with me.

It's because Perry didn't read it. He was told that it was true and he didn't have faith that he was told the truth.

It doesn't matter if he violates his own Mormon beliefs to get a few more supporters.

Why don't they all just whip em out to see who the "real man is," and that includes Bachmann.

I have offered to bet large amounts of money when I was sure I was right (and sure the bet wouldn't be taken up on). And I have a whole lot less money that anybody on that stage last night. Of all the preposterous nonsense these candidates spew, why are we fixated on this? The reason this country is so badly led is that everybody--left and right--idiotically focuses on ridiculous non-issues like this when there are so many important things we desperately need to start figuring out.

But if he was really so sure, he should have offered to bet his Life... or at least the life of his First Born.
