Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) believes Americans should buy products made in the US, but he seems a bit confused about what those products might be.

In an interview with ABC's Christiane Amanpour Sunday, the senior senator from Arizona incorrectly declared that Apple's iconic iPhone and iPad products were made in the US.

ABC News dedicated several segments of their World News broadcast last week to furnishing a home only with products that were made in the US. In the end, the house was left without key electronic products like televisions and computers.

McCain told Amanpour that the ABC News team should have simply purchased products from Apple.

"I would also point out that if you emptied that house, if you had left a computer there or an iPad or an iPhone, those are built in the United States of America," he said.

In fact, both Apple products are designed in the US but manufactured in China. United Steelworkers President Leo Gerard corrected McCain in a later segment.

"The iPad and iPhone are made in China," he said. "They're not made in America."

More shocking than that, John McCain knows what an iPhone is.

American Exceptionalism I guess. iPads are "exceptional" so they MUST be made here, right?

It blows my mind that anyone who has a gripe about Obama's performance as president can honestly say that this idiot would have done better. I can't imagine the mess we'd be in with a McCain administration.

That IBM decided that outsourcing the OS and chip manufacturing for it's PC's was a good idea. And a couple of relatively unknown upstarts got their big chance to bury the biggest player in the field.

When I was an environmental engineer int he late 80's to mid-90's I did a lot of work at IBM facilities that 1/2 to 3/4's fallow. They had the brainpower to write on OS rather than outsource it to Micro$haft...they had plenty of brainpower and manufacturing abilities to make their own chips rather than send the work to Intel.

How'd that work for IBM?

I guess Santayana was correct...

It left Windows 95 in the dust. Alas, we see how that worked out; marketing might makes right. *eyeroll*

tampa_edski's picture

Micro$haft has not had an idea of it's own. Even MSDOS (which was quite a leap forward in its day) was purchased from some poor slob who felt it was easier to cash in for the few thousand dollars than try to be a businessman.

The same can be said for Apple - they are masters of advertising. They have managed to create a business model where they can can extort 30% from everyone participating in their "walled garden"...so they'll be far more immune to making silly mistakes like IBM did.

I will say this - M$ for all it's failings did bring a large measure of stability and standard practice to IT. Not sure it was/is good or bad - after all, Pax Romana was peace, even if it took way the self determination of almost all who suffered under it. One the same side of the coin there are aspects of Apples preogramming model I appreciate - the "walled garden" is far more secure, even if it means that the end user get's squadouche in terms of dictating their own computing experience.

In the mid 90's I worked with an engineerthat preferred using DOS over Windows. "Windows makes it too easy" he'd say. Decade and a half later I am understanding what he meant...

But to the premise itself, that there actually is anything to buy in the US that is made in the US.
I suggest everyone walk around their living rooms right now and see what you can find that is US made.

Best of luck on that.

Gibson and Fender both offer 'made in the USA' models.

But what about the pickups, knobs, trim pots, steel and plastic bits, i don't know.

tampa_edski's picture

The tuning pegs on my 2004 Rick Laredo bass are German Schallers...Same with the 2000 Dakota six string.

Nothing is truly built in one country anymore.

American Fenders are great axes...Gibby's....ehhhh...they have QA/QC issues. When I bought my 6 string Ricky Dakota in 2000, I was jonesing for a Les Paul. I spent about 4 hours at a major music store that had about 50 LP's on the wall, of various cost. I played about half of these...and the best one was a Japanese made Epiphone model that cost about $500. It far outplayed the $1200-$1500 American Gibson LP's I tried...

That's not to say the Rick I got was not without faults. I was never happy with it - I wanted to retire my 66 Fender (I play really HARD, and wanted to preserve that museum piece), I felt the Rick Dakota sounded like crap. Eventually I migrated back to bass and didn't touch the 6 string for years. When I finally took it out it had a bad pickup that I needed to replace.

When the local luthier was putting in the new PU he called me..."the other pickup is reverse wound...it sounds kinda muddy like that. Do you want me to reverse the wiring on that PU?" I said "shit yeah!"...and now that axe is everything I wanted.

I guess there are a couple lessons...the made in "xxxx" meme is basically bullshit in the modern world, and also you get bad apples in every bushel.

ExpatZ's picture

Inconsistent quality from axe to axe, each one feels so different that if you want to buy a new one you have to play practically every axe on the wall to narrow it down to those you find acceptable.

I quit US made guitars for Ibanez RG's in the early 90's. They were consistent, I could find at least 8 out of 10 that played well right off the wall where as I would only get 2 or 3 Fenders out of a dozen that I would call acceptable.
I hate Gibsons, like playing a baseball bat.

And they hold their value just fine, the 6 I have are now all worth more than $2000 a piece, I paid around $400 for the standards and $700 for the DX models.

No. It was Chinese. Perfect imitation. In other word. Steve Jobs gave away also the technology to the Chinese.

Additionally, the Army, Air Force, Navy, etc etc, stores, caled the PX (Post exchange) do not sell a single
American product. Everything is made in China, Taiwan, India, Pakistan...you name it.

Remember the news stories a while back about abusive working conditions at the iPad subcontractor? Things such as n-hexane solvents being used for cleaning screens (without a fume hood to pull away the vapor, workers were basically sniffing glue all day.)

As noted above, the only thing scarier than a US Senator being this clueless is a news organization's bookers thinking this bozo is an "expert."

Oh, that's right - it isn't news anymore - they're all "entertainers" now, like Rush Limbaugh. Comedy Central has the only hard news shows left: the Colbert Report and The Daily Show.

He'll say anything, including contradicting himself, to pander to the far right-wing fringe. I would encourage everyone to go to YouTube and listen to Michael Moore's speech yesterday from Madison, Wisconsin. It sure puts many things into perspective, especially about how the rich are getting richer and the poor are paying the tab...I would have to include Mr McPalin and his wealthy wife in the equations. Why is this guy still getting a salary from the taxpayers to sit in the Senate or on the Sunday morning talk shows and pontificate about things he knows nothing about??? Oh, and BTW, he wants to "bomb, bomb, bomb" Libya!
