Major Garrett slams Fox: They want to keep the 'polarization' in American media
Fox News wants to maintain an ideological divide within the media for marketing reasons, says a senior reporter that recently left the network.
Appearing on MSNBC's Morning Joe Monday, Major Garrett explained that his former employer has a vested interest in making sure the media is as polarized as possible.
NPR fired longtime analyst Juan Williams last week after he expressed fear of Muslims in airports.
"Look, Bill, I'm not a bigot," Williams told Fox News' Bill O'Reilly. "You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."
"NPR was increasingly unhappy with him," Garrett told MSNBC's Joe Scarborough Monday.
"[NPR] was getting blowback from listeners about seeing Juan so often on Fox. That speaks to a problem that neither Fox nor NPR can solve -- they don't want to solve, which is the polarization of American media," Garrett said.
"For a certain amount of marketing points of view, Fox wants to keep that polarization saying, 'Look, we are different. We're dramatically different. You can see how we are different. If you like that difference, you better come over here and you better stay here.'"
"That is an embedded part of the marketing that surrounds what happens in the news division at Fox," he said.
Time's Mark Halperin pointed out that Williams isn't always treated as an equal at Fox News.
"Juan Williams' place on Fox gives them kind of a fig leaf credibility to say, 'We bring on divergent voices,'" said Halperin.
"They aren't very many and frankly, you know, when I watch him on, he's not always treated with that much respect."
"And he's frequently outnumbered," added Garrett.
"Let me ask you what is going on what is going on within Fox?" wondered Halperin. "How much would they be actively strategizing about taking advantage of this for publicity, for energizing their viewers?"
"I don't think it is any coincidence the day it happened, he got a huge contract at Fox and Fox planted a flag in the ground saying, 'He is ours, he is going to stay ours and if you are outraged, this is where you need to be,'" answered Garrett.
"That is an embedded part of [Fox News CEO] Roger Ailes' DNA."
Williams accepted a $2 million contract from Fox News less than 24 hours after being fired from NPR.
"Roger had to love that day," said Scarborough. "He has to absolutely love the fact that another liberal media outlet blundered their way right into his hands."
"You said it, Joe," replied Garrett.

...have all been silent regarding the "Crucifixion" of "Civil Rights icon" Juan Williams? And what terrorist wears Muslim clothing? Williams knows this and was playing the placating Negro to the many bigoted ignoramuses who tune in to Fox.
"You said it, LeftandLeft," replied Bombenhagel.
Ever heard a racist white person tell you that they're not racist because they have black friends?
Same formula on Fox. Williams, token liberal negro, is one of the biggest stooges on TV.

I got my 'Turn Off FOX' bumper sticker in the mail today!! YAY!!!
Government + the Federal Reserve = organized crime
I saw one the other day that I want. It says: If you want to quit hearing crazy voices in your head turn of FOX NEWS!
Conservatives, Tea Partier`s, and Holy Rollers believe that their victory in this coming election will reassert the nations higher values, but the only value that will be reasserted is the value to survive in the most pleasurable way. All this crap about higher values is nonsense spoken by hypocrites and believed by idiots.

Muslim terrorists wear Muslim garb, where such garb is not uncommon.
The 9-11 hijackers were dressed in Western garb, and were pretty well clean-shaven.

What's amazing is the brainwashed morons who listen to Fox , exclusively of course , think that all other media outlets are radical left wing , they'd probably tell you that Beck and Limbaugh are centered and believe it too .
"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."
Most of the so-called liberal media talking heads believe it too.
I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so.....
Juan Williams should forever be known as Rupert Murdoch's codpiece.

Keep us divided into the left and right paradigm while they steal our country from us from above. Works like a champ. Attention is off the election fraud or the private federal reserve system and banksters. We spend our time quabbling about Sarah Palin and Christine O'Donnell while they get away with our tax money.

Never watched Fox, but Juan Williams is an idiot; that's a sufficient qualification for a job at NPR.
Roger ain't gonna like what Major is saying.
anymore.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
Private Garrett, now. He's demoted to chief bottlewasher.
Saturday night's podcast, William is fox's lawn jockey! Notice how that scum bag Scarborough tries to slam us real Liberals about Juan going over to fox, like we give a shit! I never considered him a Liberal and clearly neither did many other African Americans. I'd be willing to bet that many of them who don't watch fox have no idea who the hell he is and that's a good thing! I'm not sure how any self respecting black man could work for fox. Fortunately for Juan he clearly doesn't have anything close to self respect!
I have wondered for YEARS how NPR could condone Juan Williams working for Faux Noise, a blatantly NOT Fair and Balanced network.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
someone was fired for something from one company and hired for that very thing by another company ON THE VERY SAME DAY!
Now, isn't Alan Colmes the only "librul" left on that network?
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
Smart move but, he should never have been on there. Personally I'm hoping the Dems can keep control of both houses just to see all the spittle that will be coming from fox, Limpballs and Beck.

No you media toadies, Juan was fired for blatant racism and bigotry.

This colloquy is wrong in so many ways! And what’s most depressing is that they seem totally clueless about the implications of what they’re saying.
Start with the logical fallacy of begging the question — assuming what you’re purporting to prove. They all take it for granted that Williams was fired because he worked for Fox. They barely mention his on-air anti-semitism; and, at least in this clip, I don’t remember their mentioning that Williams had been reprimanded a number of times in the past by NPR. (Aside: How would they have explained Imus’s slap on the wrist for the overt combination of racism and sexism of his “nappy-headed ho’s”?)
Second, they assume that Fox and NPR are rivals but identical in nature, ignoring the fact that Fox is about as much a source of legitimate journalism as, say, Pravda under the Communist regimes. Fox is not a news organization; it’s one among many propaganda and fundraising arms of the Republican Party. (Granted, the tail might sometimes wag the dog!)
Third, one of them, forget who, says something to the effect that “Those of us in the business don’t mind being the focus of attention at times, but we don’t want the focus to stay on us.” For a journalist, the focus should always be on the story, never on the one telling the story. But, by the way, Williams has gained millions of dollars via the focus on his highly publicized anti-semitism. What? Two million dollar golden parachute from NPR? Shiny new contract from Fox? Alas, poor Juan!
I saw/heard no indication that any of these people recognize the difference between actually being journalists (where the object is to be both accurate and true) and pretending to be journalists in a role-playing game (where the object is to win fame and glory and money and ideological “points”).
MacIntosh and Oscar think Juan Williams is just having trouble being himself.

This was bizarre. Halperin claiming that Joe's show is the best example of balance ??? NOBODY on that panel had an opinion that counter balanced the meme that liberals control the media, Juan is a victim and Fox is real news organization.
Williams you self serving prick.
There's nothing more disgusting than a so called "Fox Liberal".

Can someone interpret this for me?
Now, how does a black guy writing about the "Civil Rights Movement" prove you're not an anti-Muslim bigot?

is to protect the freedom of the citizenry by informing them. It's why the enjoy constitutional protection. FOX is dedicated to destroying freedom.
Question: Let's say it's 2012 or even now. The elections did not go well for the Right. They have lost. Next, you see FOX inciting civil disorder, riots, even threatening the vote count. Basically, using the airwaves to thwart the results of the election.
What would be the appropriate response?

Fox has a monopoly on extreme rightwing conservatism while all other TeeVee "news" outlets are considered "mainstream" by Fox's own admission. Extremism is the opposite of mainstream. So in effect, Fox is admitting to be on the extreme side of political ideology and they have that market cornered. It is very profitable for them to continue to pander to the rightwing extremists.
LimpBalls
Your BillO's BOY. Like with the Daily Show, Juan you are the senior BLACK GUY correspondent. You will never ever be respected as an African-American at Fox. But money talks. Sellout
NPR is every bit the right wing propaganda machine that FOX is, they're just a lot more polished and somewhat more subtle in how they go about it. Maybe NPR dumped Williams because they can't afford to have overt indicators of what it is that they are doing (with the NPR target audience, propaganada is only going to be effective when those targeted for manipulaiton have no idea how they are being played). FOX 's methods would be too clumsy and overt for NPR's victims.
I wouldn't trust either one of these organizations to tell me the time of day. A plague on both their houses.
There is no more cotton to be picked or assembly line jobs to be had, because of this change 35 million have become unemployable. Only a government no skilled jobs program will put them back to work. Unfortunately many tax payers would rather see them hanging out and doing nothing rather then pay the salaries of job challenged fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers. It is time for a new change.
