Sen. Lindsey Graham doesn't have much good to say about the president and his administration's handling of health care reform. Graham accused the Obama administration of giving "bribes" to Democratic Senators in exchange for their votes, calling it "seedy Chicago politics."

"You know, change you can believe in, after this health care bill debacle is now becoming an empty slogan. And it’s really been replaced by seedy Chicago politics, when you think about it, backroom deals that amount to bribes," said Graham.

The senator from South Carolina went on to criticize the Democrats' method of paying for health care reform. "No Congress is going to allow Medicare to be cut $470 billion. We will forgive those cuts to doctors and hospitals. That's how you pay for the bill. It's Enron-accounting. It's a sham," Graham told CNN's John King Sunday.

And if . . IF the GOP really thought this bill was so bad and that is would be huge debacle - they'd be tripping over each other to vote for it.

If it was such a boondoggle to the insurance industry they'd have their GOP lapdogs voting for it.

So obvious.

u write: IF the GOP really thought this bill was so bad and that is would be huge debacle - they'd be tripping over each other to vote for it

why would they vote for it? now they can run against the bill claiming, rightly so, they tried to stop the "huge debacle" that is the bill.

maybe i don't understand what you are trying to say...

I've heard claims that this bill is the end of Obama. That it is so bad it spells the end of his presidency.

If that were true. . .

And AGAIN if the insurance industry stands to do so swell why would they fight it with every dollar, every trick and every GOPher and D they have in their pocket?

I belies their claims is all I'm sayin'

that his base has now become discouraged. he tried so hard to extend a hand to the GOP, only to have it spat upon, that he has disillusioned and discouraged many on the left. and, for a lot of people on the left, this healthcare bill is close to being (if not) the last straw (after other issues/policies/decisions that go counter to left/progressive desires)

Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake....10 Reasons to kill the Senate bill:

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/12/21-8

And then I heard Democratic Congressman Raul Grijalva of Arizona, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus talking on the Randi Rhodes show today and he said that if Reid/Pelosi try to merge the two bills in conference and NOT put in the Medicare buy-in or a "robust public option" that he feels the Progressive Caucus in the House will kill the bill.

The Progressive Caucus will be issuing a press release Wednesday regarding how they intend to vote if these provisions are NOT included in the final bill.

Even though Obama/Emanuel have said, "Don't think we're not keepin' score here brother".

So, we may all feel like this thing is a done deal, but I still see a glimmer of hope that the Progressive Democrats may actually be growing a spine.

Someone please correct me if you think I'm reading things in the wrong way.

The Republicans only want to regain power.

The Democrats only want to hang on to power.

The Republicans will lie if that serves their purpose or they tell the truth if that serves their purpose.

The Democrats are no different in that regard.

This is the truth, at least let's hope it is the truth because Medicare will fail with those cuts.

This WealthCare bill is a corrupt piece of Corporate Welfare funded as it stands by enormous cuts in the only social medical program that actually works, Medicare.

Just because a Republican says it doesn't make it untrue. But, when they regain power they will do their best to make Medicare fail on the schedule the Democrats have provided.

..you say here is that they will do their best to make Medicaire fail on schedule when the regain power. I ain't holding my breath; just my nose.

Exactly as much as the GOP could have saved us by having just one or their members give a reach across the aisle.

Heck, if the GOP had actually done something - anything except just saying "no" - the bill might have been better.

Hechicera's picture

But with him and esp. with Coburn's most recent antics ...

It's the pot calling the kettle black.

There are Republicans that are just as bought, and they all do back room deals. Graham's largest donor this cycle is a bunch of lawyers with a strong Health Care lobbying arm. They maintain a "Healthcare Reform Care Library". The most recent update on the library from Graham's largest donor is this:
http://www.nelsonmullins.com/DocumentDepot/minorityrightswithletter%5B1%5D.pdf.

For those too lazy to read the link. It's a how too manual written by a Republican Senator Gregg on how to use procedure to stop the Healthcare bill. With a helpful cover letter. We know where Graham's largest donor stands.

That's Graham's biggest donor, coming in at #6 is BCBS.

He probably needs them too, the Teabagger's hate him. What's a politician to do for money these days?

surfjac's picture

..chicago politics,
..$470 million being cut from Medicaire,
..enron accounting,
..shams but I do know there's no public option or medicaire buy-in. I guess lindsay graham don't know how backroom deals work because if the senate had to be bought off for the bill, they didn't bring enough $ to the backroom.

would not be complaining about any of this if his pal, Mr. McGoo, was in the White House.

I personally think the Senate bill stinks. Now we have to wait and see what the House can do with their version and then the conference.

I'm not hopeful that we'll see anything but what Wendell Potter called the "Health Insurance Company Profit Protection and Enhancement Act" - which then, by default, turns into the "Congressional Campaign Fund Enhancement Act."

And, you can rest assured that the Repukes will benefit just as much as the Dems.

MountainMan23's picture

So it took "seedy Chicago politics" to get the Democrats to ACT like they are the majority.

The Republicans set the stage by demanding straight party-line voting from their members.

For all my suspicions about the final product, if this health care bill finally gets the Democrats to ACT like they are the majority on other issues, maybe it's worth it .. at least that COULD be a good thing.

But how is he inaccurate?

Obama cut a back room deal with PhRMA (specifically with Bill Tauzin, Bush's Medicare Part D whore) to guarantee PhRMA windfall profits. This was after they paid him millions.

If that isn't a bribe, then bribes don't exist anymore.

Was Joe Lieberman one of the 60 who made that vote earlier today? Given how vocal he and Ben Nelson have been in opposition to the health care bill as it stands now, no one will ever be able to convince me that Obama did NOT make some kind of deal with those two.
