Sen. Joe Lieberman caucuses with the Democrats but doesn't seem anxious to find a solution for uninsured Americans. "And I'm afraid we've got to think about putting a lot of that off until the economy is out of recession. There's no reason we have to do it all now," Lieberman told CNN's John King Sunday.

"I think it's a real mistake to try to jam through the total health insurance reform," Lieberman said. "It's just not good for the system. Frankly, it won't be good for the Obama presidency."

Maybe we should suspend aid to Israel during the recession. I'm sure Joe won't object since we need to tighten our belts.

Pete2069's picture

Would never let that happen...That is about the only thing they would attack others about..
Why do you believe the democrats have to meet privately with the Jewish organization like AIPAC before elections or to receive their votes..

Senator Schumer privately expressed concerns directly to White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel about Chas Freeman, because of a statement he made about Israel.. It was stated when Freeman resign Schumer even bragged about it..
Do you believe anyone would even think about doing this if the situation were reverse and someone made a statement about Iran , Iraq , Syria or mostly any other country even North Korea as far as that goes...

Is this also to make sure that Jewish members or Jewish backers are selected to committees...and other top positions...

the only difference between you and the woman who said "heil hitler" to the israeli guy at the town hall meeting is, at least she had the balls to say what she really feels and thinks

Pete2069's picture

As far as I am concern you have a lot of nerve to attack one's statement on your personal view. I believe I had my balls hanging when I made the statement just the way I wanted to!

What I was discussing is the direct bias influence some leaders or persons have over our government policies and actions which are PREJUDICE for their personal likes. or dislikes..

I believe when you are a citizen of this country it's principles and concerns should outway that of any other nation..

I believe that Blackwater & Halliburton has to much control over our government's decisions. They are paid at least ten times the salary we pay our soldiers and our government seems to have no problem with this.. They also use soldiers from other countries , which we are supposedly are not even close to being friendly with..

I also believe we have too close of ties with other countries which we have outsourced around a million American jobs to in the past 8 years..

SO what I was stating was that we are very partial and one sided when it comes to attacking or defending certain countries or individuals ,,, depending on one's opinion and not based on facts..... And our government should base their actions and policies on facts and what is in the best interest for America and their citizens.

Call them persons up and tell them they have no balls...

“Once a year, the Israel lobby in Washington known as AIPAC holds its annual convention where anyone who is anyone in the political world comes to render fealty, rather than homage,” wrote Arnaud de Borchgrave, editor-at-large of The Washington Times. “It has become a political rite of passage, like a medieval contract for exchanging goods and services...Anyone who doesn’t pass the litmus test can"" forget"" about becoming president of the United States, or senator or even congressman...

Democrats. Maybe more of them are beholden to AIPAC, I don't know. But if you want to start slinging partisan mud, you're going to get called on being disingenuous, because even though you may not be, it's a common tactic of Repuglican, excuse me Rethuglican, I mean, Reduncelican--oh you know what I mean--trolls on this blog to throw in one of these quasi-conspiratorial charges at, you guessed it, Democrats only. So sling away but prepare to get buried in it in response.

Pete2069's picture

I thought I was very disingenuous about my dislike for Lieberman or Schumer...

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/arc...

In 2007 Schumer and Feinstein (key votes) said they were voting for Michael Mukasey .... which at that time confirmed his appointment as the next attorney general..

Mukasey stated in so many words ...
That all crimes are not crimes to be prosecuted and he believed Bush could do any thing he pleased...

Given that whatever "reform" is passed will take several years to be implemented, surely now is exactly the time to do the reform so it will be in place when the recession is over.

gypsykat's picture

Worry about the uninsured later!! Basically what he is saying is don't do anything for them, because later will never come....especially if they don't get this health care passed.

It really saddens me deep down that a human being that is a "have," can have so little regard and no willingness to help the "have nots." Clearly Lieberman has not been "unemployed" and counting every penny and praying that he won't get sick.

Actually this recession is already ending, and health care reform will ease the lagging indicator of employment by taking the burden of providing health insurance to employees off the shoulders of employers.

Unless of course the employers are gambling on medical stocks on Wall Street.

... it will give absolute majorities to the Dems on both houses for at least one generation.

The normal MO of modern politicians is to act/lead based upon the feedback of focus groups, with ideological aspects be damned. In this respect, I think it is interesting that the Dems are not acting on this regard given the feedback they must have gotten from their focus groups.

No corporate funding can produce the same level of positive mindshare among the voters.

From a purely selfish value proposition... implementing a successful health care reform, which benefits most Americans, would provide far more positive electoral results for the Dems, than an almost unlimited amount of campaign funding from corporate interests.

It is the chance of a life time for any political party with both a spine and political aspirations. I am afraid that the Dems lack both.

constituent's picture

in addition, meaningful health care cost reform will revitalize the economy. it will also slow down "outsourcing". as you know our economy is 70% consumerism. i'm NOT convinced that's coming back anytime soon. what you mentioned of course is a big part of the (r) opposition.

Or go homeless, or go hungry or die because of lack of medical care. that was just elite arrogance. just like this entire health care debate. The people with health care don't want people without to get it. If they do it might stop them from getting their lips injected.

Of course, since he's now "his very own party of one," does that mean he automatically gets a bye past the primaries, not having to answer to his constituents until the general?

Terrible's picture

he can get a bye past the Primary for his party which I believe is called the Independent Democrat Party, which as you point out has very few members and he'd probably win a Primary with most of the dozen or so votes. HOWEVER the Democratic Party is another matter ALL together!! I don't know how CTs election laws are set up but I think in most states he'd be uneligable to run as a Dem without going through a Primary since he lost his last one.

With the little that I earn, there is no private insurance I could afford...

Republicans claim to represent the 'culture of life', but when millions of Americans like myself are uninsured, their reaction to that is 'that's your f**king problem'.

What happens to the $1000....does it go into paying for healthcare for those who cannot afford it?

Or does the $1000 go to subsidize those who can afford to buy healthcare?
I'm stumped on that one.

'Talk to the hand'

One would think the reason people don't buy health coverage is because they can't afford it..and yet most who cant' afford insurance are stuck with the fine, the ammount of which will go up next year...
But those who make less than $15,000 a year are deemed too poor, and the fine is waived....

The policy in MA is a gift to the private insurers..

but there is an article today with stats from a healthcare non-profit that indicates health care premiums will double in 10 years w/o reform, and then quadruple in 20. So a family that now pays 12,000 a year will see premiums double and so on. Where are people going to get that kind of scratch?

constituent's picture

call me cynical but i think the global elites/financial elites don't want us to have health care for several reasons one being to make us/continue to be less competitive with the WallStreet darling CHINA. employers can't afford health care insurance for their employees. health care insurance goes up so to offset increases... wages are stagnate. if we don't do something like significant "reform" more outsourcing will continue. we will NOT be able to compete with countries that provide health care.

If the Repugs take back the House and Senate in 2010 because of the ineptitude of the Dems, there will be no controlling legal authority that would stop the Health Care Industry from f$%king Americans till we bleed.

Lets start balancing the budget on the salary and benefits of our representatives. First off, we need to freeze their pay, no more automatic raises.

Second we need to look at there benefits. I currently have to carry a $1,000.00 deductible in order to afford my health care and I make less than half of what our elected federal officials do.

Lets slap them with a $2,500.00 deductible and lock them to 70/30 reimbursement after that. Plus they need a cap in dental and vision benefits.

Its time to bring our legislators back to the real world.

I would love to see the Global ceo's salary come back down to earth.

When ceo's outsource , cut workers jobs , wages and benefits they received huge bonuses and or salary increases for doing it..

1) Lieberman and Lugar. How about a Democrat on the panel. It's hard to get the truth out when the airwaves are full of the Republicans.
2) So if we have to wait for the recession to be over, when do we reform healthcare? When the recession is over? We will have to wait for the investor class to recover. And when the investor class has recovered will be time then? No, we will have to ensuure that we don't damage the economy after we have been through this.

The bottom line is that the republicans DO NOT CARE about healthcare reform. They talk about healthcare being 18% of GDP, but can't connect the dots that it is because the healthcare companies are raping the system.

Republicans do care about health care reform, specifically how it will impact the finances of their beloved corporate patrons. 18% of the GDP is a hell of a lot of money, and whole bunch of which is showered down on those who are helping it go to 24%.

...think how many uninsured will be dead from lack of healthcare by then. We'll save millions!

What a dick.

includes this bowl-floater. We need another round of housecleaning and it's going to be even more difficult, yet necessary, in 2010. The grassroots that carried Obama to the White House needs to focus on getting the Progressive headcount high enough that small-state corporate lackeys like Baucus and outright backstabbers like Lieberman can be rooted out of their hidey-holes.

Right Joe. As if anyone needs to take you seriously about anything. Especially when you fought hard to campaign for McCain / Palin.
Get the "F" outta here.

Lieberman is his own death panel. How many people will die without health insurance before Lieberman feels they can qualify for health insurance? McCain/Lieberman lost the election because the American public utterly rejected their policies.

What he isn't saying is that after the recession is over, and health care reform has been put off, we can invade Iran!

60 more people die each day that insensitive and selfish people like you delay the public option with your blatant shilling for the status quo. And it delays the day of reckoning to future generations when inevitably things will be a lot more expensive (to the tune of 15-25% per year or so) and complicated. But you got yours, so fuck you huh?

People like you belong in a mental ward, mot public service.

Lieberman and Richard Lugar both agree that Obama shouldn't have put Health Care on the agenda at all because there is a recession. But, of course, if the recession was over you couldn't put health care on the agenda because Lieberman and Lugar would say it would hurt the recovery. And if the economy is rolling, everyone who is willing to work should be able to get covered, so there's no need for health care reform. It's funny how that works.

till the recession is over? Then try promising your constituency that you will:
1. ONLY TELL THE TRUTH... and
2. ONLY WORK FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD.

How's THAT for a fresh start and a brand new slant on your career?

Forgive the repost of this question from a different thread, but I want to raise it in front of many for serious discussion.

Why aren't we marching in the streets about this? The numbers on our side dwarf those against the Iraqi invasion, yet not a peep is heard about showing our strength in favor of real health care reform.

Keep ANSWER and their issue hijacking agenda as far away as possible. The more popular liberal blogs are the place to organize. If they and Move-On can provide infrastructure to raise funds, they can help schedule street marches.

With numbers around merely a million in the streets, let's dare the media to ignore us once again, after they've abetted, even incited, the tea bagging gun toters who shout down the town hall meetings. Let's dare our reps to ignore us again too. Move-on, certainly, but Move Now! We have precious little time left to affect this issue.

Please tell the creator of the video that, despite what he thinks, he will probably not receive all the meds he needs in jail. (I've been in more than my share of them...) Everyone I've met who was on prescriptions, etc before going in has always had trouble getting their prescribed meds. It's a real uphill battle to get them, especially if they are strong, potentially abusable things like anti-psychotics. They're usually not allowed in general population facilities.

Best of luck!

I guess the lives of those who are dying because of the rampant greed of the big insurers is not reason enough for such fine human beings like Joe Lieberman.

I bet if it was him dying we'd have every reason to do it now.

Put the entire Congress on Medicaid (with the estate transfers etc.) until they legislate Medicare (doughnut hole and other problems removed etc.) for every American....cradle to grave.

That's it.

Once they realize how rotten that system is (Medicaid....can't find a decent doctor etc.) ....THEN perhaps they will be open to H.R. 676.

"One for all and all for one."

Can't we be just a tad bit human toward one another for once?

Thank you so much.

Good night all....

(Got all the kids here from L.A.....WHAT a day!!!.....Oy!!!!!)

P.S. Joe Lieberman makes me sick. Would the good citizens of Connecticut PRETTY PLEASE return him to the private sector.....in Israel?

Hartford, CT is sometimes called the "insurance capitol". It probably explains a lot why Lieberman holds the position he does on this matter.

I'm sure that once the recession was over, that Lieberman would come up with some other reasons why health reform should be delayed.

Take a look at his hands. Like he's visualizing the grab for insurance cash.

It's alright ma it's life and life only!

Sorry; didn't mean to reply, just to comment.

Perhaps Joe can wory about his re election bid after the election? Maybe he could stay and actually work instead of going on "recess"?

I think most realize that Joe is concerned about Joe and not doing anything that those that voted for him would want him to do. He definately believes corporations actually mark those ballots.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, cares what LIEberman thinks. He made a pact that he could keep his appointments if he promised to NEVER prosecute ANYONE, and that's one promise he's kept.

And let's wait until after the depression to worry about the jobless, the homeless, the sick and the hungry.

Meanwhile let's lower some more taxes on the wealthy so we can borrow some more money from China to supply some more arms to Israel or maybe start another oil war or two.

If one short war could bring us out of the first depression, think what a dozen more endless wars could do.

What state is Lieberman from? The biggest insurance company state in the nation, Connecticut. He knows delay means death of reform. His motives are tissue thin. Lieberman's a fucking tool in addition to being a hack and a backstabber.

spicegal's picture

Delay will most assuredly kill healthcare reform. Fixing healthcare is a also a big part of fixing the economy. Why doesn't Leiberman stop this charade and just go ahead and proclaim his loyalty to the Republican Party and Israel.

...and to the big insurance companies of Connecticut.

Not our fault, aye? Travelers HQ is in St. Paul, Anthem is in Richmond, Cigna is in Philly. They may have started here but have had a much reduced presence for years. Our tax burden is too high for them.
