Kristol 'amused' by Chicago's lost Olympic bid
Like many conservatives, The Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol seems delighted that President's Barack Obama's attempt to bring the Olympics to Chicago failed. "You couldn't help but be amused by it," Kristol said on Fox Sunday.
Kristol's publication, The Weekly Standard, reported cheers in their newsroom when it was announced that Chicago lost the Olympic bid.
The conservative columnist thinks that Obama should have been campaigning against America. "By Barack Obama's view of the world, he should have been rooting for Brazil to get the Olympics. South America's never gotten them. It's a rising power. It would help Brazil. We don't need the Olympics. We've had them a million times. Our economy doesn't need the boost of the Olympics," said Kristol.
This man is a complete nut. I live and work near Chicago, as do my entire family, and I am so VERY glad he has enough that he didn't need the financial uplift that having the Olympics here would have given us. We sure needed it. In fact, we kinda crossed our fingers in support of it.
We work in hospitality. Thats hotels, and restaurants, for the rest of the industries. Hospitality has been dying a slow and painful death, one hotel and restaurant at a time. I am talking one a manager at a hotel, one a manager at a restaurant, one a chef. Now. we all have college degrees. So we are not unskilled or uneducated. We work in the industry because we love people.
When some nut tells me that we have enough and don't need the financial boon that international games would have brought I have to ask him this:
"Would you come and put insulation in my house, paint the siding, and shovel the snow?" Because we need those things, and this stimulus would have helped. Now it's gone, and he is cheering. What a dupe! Give up your check bud. Feel this and see if you are so wonderful!
Now all the Republicans can go visit their mistresses.

I live in Central Illinois, where the taxes are also too high, and I will never spend a penny in Chicago if I can help it.
That being said, it is damn foolish and borderline treasonous to cheer because Chicago didn't get the Olympics. I'm sure that there will be plenty of footage for the Democrats to use against these a##holes come election time.
I am sorry for the lot in life you are currently getting. Myself is going about life having Chrysler Corp. taking away my dealership's viability. I live now on a third of what I am used to. It is utterly scary for me and my wife. The man that signs my paycheck went out and spent MILLIONS of dollars buying other dealerships to keep his employees in jobs. Got to give the man credit as he payed too much for these franchises. I will honor him by trying my best to keep it going.
But,,, I think that the Olympics while noteworthy would be bad for the USA. Like any other public endeavor,,,, there will be cost over-runs. Collectively as a country we have to bring home permanent jobs. Living in Florida I still believe that the reinvestment in permanent jobs should start with the areas around the Great Lakes. I used to live up in upstate NY and have seen what to loss of factory jobs has done.

The Olympics are a money losing proposition.
No country in the last half century has made money hosting the Olympics.
The IOC makes a bundle, but that is a private entity that doesn't pay for the infrastructure the hosting country has to cover on their own dime.
The US missed a bullet by not getting them this time around.
Better to just give the money to the banks like they are doing right now.

Actually, that's not true. Salt Lake City made money as did Atlanta. The only country that didn't make money was Greece which is ironic given that they were the first to host the Olympics. 1988: Seoul Olympic Games made profits of US $300 million, a record high for a government-run Olympiad.
1992: Barcelona Olympic Games made profits of US $5 million.
1996: Atlanta Olympic Games made profits of US $10 million.
1932: Los Angeles made profits of $1 million.
Not that I would call that a good track record of producing a profit and when taken against the hassle (Atlanta in particular with it's bombing) I wouldn't be calling any of it a win with the exception LA and Seoul.

The far right wing has yet again gone to the "us against them" well. Who is the 'them' this time? It is the people America. About 75% of Americans want the public option. The right wants to keep the status quo so the insurance giants can keep their staggering profits. 80% of Americans wanted the Chicago Olympics. They Olympics would have created hundreds of thousands of jobs, been a boost to the economy, and would have given us an opportunity to show the world we are not all idiots. Kristol and Co. literally cheered when Chicago was eliminated.
If the right wing wants to declare war on the people of America, I say go for it - it will only hasten your inevitable downfall.

I'm not sure that people are willing to blame Obama for this high unemployment rate when last month made the 21st straight month of job losses. Obama has only been in office for 10 months. Try not to believe the Republican talking points about them getting back control of congress next year. The Olympics have NEVER EVER been held in South America, and they've been held at least 12 times in the US, more than in any other country in the world.
