Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann says she would be the best person to face President Barack Obama in the general election because she hasn't had a single gaffe.

"[A]s people are looking at the candidate that is the most conservative and the most consistent candidate, I've been that candidate," the Minnesota Republican told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren Thursday.

"I haven't had a gaffe or something that I've done that has caused me to fall in the polls. People see in me someone who's genuinely a social conservative, a fiscal conservative, a national security conservative and a tea partier. I'm the whole package. And when it comes to the best Republican who take on Barack Obama and not have any clunker in my record to be able to take him on, it's me."

"Well, you've had a few -- you've had a few little gaffes, maybe not recently," Susteren noted.

"Well, I got Elvis Presley's birthday wrong, but I don't think that's a disqualifying factor for being president of the United States," Bachmann replied.

As Talking Points Memo notes, Bachmann's list of gaffes is gaffes and misstatements is extensive.

The candidate has confused actor John Wayne with serial killer John Wayne Gacy; suggested that Hezbollah was creating missile sites in Cuba; said there was a "very real concern" that vaccines cause mental retardation; insisted that waterboarding was justified like nuking Japan; said she would end "Great Society" programs to make the U.S. more like China; accused GOP candidates of being "frugal socialists;" predicted that deceased Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi "may be" still in power if she were president; asserted that the best way to end teen bullying would be to abolish the Dept. of Education; refused to say fellow candidate Mitt Romney was a Christian; proposed eliminating all taxes; told a man with "no teeth" to rely on charity; advised that hurricanes were God's warning about government spending; mistakenly claimed the Battle of Lexington and Concord was fought in New Hampshire instead of Massachusetts; asserted that the founding fathers "worked tirelessly" to end slavery; and told a Christian radio host that Americans fear "the rise of the Soviet Union."

And those are just a sampling of the things she has said during the past year.

Prior to that, Bachmann has warned about government re-education camps; said that President Franklin D. Roosevelt caused a recession with the Hoot-Smalley Act; compared her supporters to the "charge of the Light Brigade" -- which actually sustained major losses and eventual defeat in the Crimean War -- insisted that President George Bush only added $400 billion to the national debt, explained that 100 percent of the U.S. economy was private before Obama took office; and called for an investigation into "anti-American" members of Congress.

But perhaps the candidate doesn't feel that any of those were gaffes.

Didn't she win the Iowa straw-poll and since then she's been at the bottom of the heap? I would call that a fall and a fairly speedy one.

Her best gaffe was made before she ever joined the presidential race. Calling for an investigation into anti-American congress people was such a great gaffe that she should get extra points for that alone.

You might want to check your comment. I just googled "bachmann straw poll" and it looks to me like she did win the Iowa straw poll. on August 13, 2011. Twice on the same google links it says that Paul won an online straw poll on another date

I'm in Iowa, and like a number of my other fellow citizens of my unwillingly adopted state, I got a call just before the straw poll. It came from an unknown number in Southern California, and the robocaller offered free tickets, transportation, lodging and food for the straw poll if one could "correctly" answer the question: "Which candidate is known as 'The Defender of the Constitution?'" I was up on a ladder at the time, and really didn't have time to talk.

I can't help but think they were hoping to get Ron Paul supporters to stuff the ballot boxes -- which is perfectly legal for a non-binding moneymaker event like the Iowa Straw Poll.

Navy Vet's picture

Seriously, Milkie, why do you even come here? Aren't there better Lib-tardian forums for you to hang out at?
To be honest, your positions on just about every topic brought up here are so far from the Progressive mainstream that they can't be seen on a clear day.

Let's try this one more time: Ron Paul is a loon, and a racist one at that. His stance on ANY issue is tainted, doubly so, by his racist leanings and his misogynistic approach to women and their lives.
The very fact that YOU support him tells me all I need to know about YOU...a loser pining for a fantasy America that never existed, except in you Randian Gault-esque imagination.

In a word, sunshine, get a life and stop propping up Papa Paul the Lib-tard.

A comment like this from Baaachmann reveals her total lack of self awareness, the source of all her problems.

Her incompetence stems from the very fact that she doesn't recognize that she is an ignoramus. She is just barely intelligent enough to think she's competent, but not nearly intelligent enough to know she is is not.

I haven't had a gaffe ... that has caused me to fall in the polls.

She's made dozens of gaffes, but her supporters either don't recognize them as gaffes or don't care. This says as much about her supporters as it does about her.

Before you hate on me for this posting, my family has worked and helped in this field. It’s a sensitive issue and I do not make light of it. I’m just sayin’..

It seems that Republicans candidates demonstrate a lot of symptoms associated with a medically defined condition. Republicans candidates may often:

find it hard to remember things,
not understand how to pay for things,
have trouble understanding social rules,
have trouble seeing the consequences of their actions,
have trouble solving problems, and/or
have trouble thinking logically.
.....................................................................................

Definition of Intellectual Disability / Mental retardation from Medicine.net

The diagnosis of mental retardation is made by looking at two main things. These are (1) the ability of a person's brain to learn, think, solve problems, and make sense of the world (intellectual functioning or IQ); and (2) whether the person has the skills he or she needs to live independently (called adaptive behavior, or adaptive functioning).

There are many signs of mental retardation. For example, children with mental retardation may:
find it hard to remember things,
not understand how to pay for things,
have trouble understanding social rules,
have trouble seeing the consequences of their actions,
have trouble solving problems, and/or
have trouble thinking logically.
..........................................................................................

In regards to adaptive behavior and adaptive functioning, the Republicans seem to do alright when elections and campaign money are involved. Not so much on anything else.

Auximinus's picture

Sometimes I think this is all a bad dream, and I'm going to wake up and all of these teabagger nuts will be gone. This cannot be where we are politically in this country.
In all seriousness, I really do think there is something wrong with alot of these people, mentally. I'm not saying that as a joke, either. They seem to have severe levels of paranoia, as well as being highly delusional. It's pretty scary that these people have been able to get as close to power as they have. Michelle Bachmann is one of the worst cases, but people like Rick perry and Sarah Palin are also great examples. They really do believe that they are loved by everyone, and that people that attempt to point out their gross mistakes are really just jealous of their...well..."magnificence". that's the thing. They seriously think they they are saviors of mankind, and as a savior they can do no wrong. They see themselves as infallible. To admit otherwise would cause a catastrophic mental breakdown the likes of which has never been seen in politics.
I almost feel sorry for them. Someone is telling these people they are great leaders, when in fact they should be seeking psychological help. Their brains are like swiss cheese, and the people behind the scenes obviously want them to stay that way for some reason.

Kreskin's picture

Man , do I know that feeling !

"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."

Ape-Man's picture

I have seen articles by professional psychologists that agree with your assessment that there is something psychologically 'wrong' with republicans, and these candidates have those qualities in spades. One of the problems with such people is their inability to recognize their own psychological and behavioral flaws.

of what they themselves are guilty of. They project, and I think they are seriously deluded. And that is frightening for there to be an entire political party to be so bats**t at the same time, no one is reeling in these crazies, and in fact, many citizen crazies cheer them on, it's like mass hysteria or something.

I guess when everything you say is insane, it's impossible to have a "gaffe." She's right on point all the time. Crazy.

Look at the comitragic GOP offerings... I mean, this is truly the first time in my life that I truly think the Republicans must be insane, actually insane. Some of the ideas they are proposing are either 1) complete nonsense that will obliterate our country or 2) laughable or 3) subversive, borderline treason.

Whoa, gotta be careful... don't wanna start sounding like a nutcase...

Anyway, who in America can take these people seriously? Rick Perry? Herman Cain? Bachman? (eek) Santorum?

I have always held the belief that the GOP gave away the last election... The way I figure it, the policies of the last administration had done such damage to the country the Republicans were saying "we gotta get while the gettin's good... we'll just pin it on the Democrats when they assume office". So they nominate an old man who would very likely not survive a first term and make his running mate a complete idiot that even a Republican would not want running the country. An un-electable ticket.

That being said, I have no idea what the angle is now... it's scary though.

Ray984954's picture

Funny, in saying she has not had a gaffe, Bachmann immediately creates one in the same breath, the women is nuttiness personified. She really sees a world that exists only between her ears(like all Repukes do). And this woman was allowed to influence 23 kids in foster care, wow.

As an aside I saw a link today that scared me but rang very true and highlights are below as well as link to the article.
http://corpwatch.org/article.php?id=376

Would Someone verify that these are the Repuke Party's mantras, Adam Smith(Adam Smith, an Scottish economist, published a book in 1776 called THE WEALTH OF NATIONS) would be proud except he did not see his idea of market rule kill whole communities during the Great Depression. That's when John Maynard Keynes helped the whole world with his idea of full employment for all cooperating together. He was a staunch capitalist who had a better idea for the most people.
Neoliberalism does not need Democracy, once it has sunk its teeth into the lawmakers and politicians in gov't which they have bought lock stock and barrelhead. Folks we have a lot of work to do reverse this trend, many programs that help people will be done away with and replaced by each and every human endeavour turned into a competition match of free market transactions. It has already been tried and failed Milton Friedman brought it back and if he wasn't dead someone should punish him for the damage he has done
MARKET RULE;
CUT PUBLIC EXPENDITURE FOR SOCIALSERVICES;
ELIMINATECONCEPTOF "PUBLIC GOOD"OR "COMMUNITY";
DEREGULATE;
PRIVATIZE
This is unbridled Neoliberalism. It is NEO because it(Liberalism) was tried in the 1800s culminatimng in the crash of the 1930s. So, they want the market to control all, even though it was a colossal failure and brought the biggest economic crash in the 1930s ever. It is the same tinkle down economics that failed in the 80's, yet the Repukes keep beating the same drum, cuz' as long as they and their rich buddies are cared for they are happy, and to hell with everybody else, you know the slackers, the rest of us.
