Herman Cain's senior adviser says that a new campaign ad isn't encouraging anyone to take up smoking, but the campaign is "resonating" with nicotine fans.

The image of chief of staff Mark Block smoking in a recent campaign ad has quickly overshadowed any other message the campaign intended to send.

"There was no subliminal message," Block told Fox News' Megyn Kelly Tuesday. "I personally would encourage people not to smoke. It's just that I'm a smoker and as a lot of the people on the staff said, 'Just let Block be Block.'"

"Were you trying to appeal to, you know, folks who are out there, you know, living their lives, working the farm, working in Detroit, that kind of thing as opposed to the East and West Coast elite, people in media circles who shun smoking and, you know, sort of real American things?" Kelly asked.

"I tell you, you walk into a veterans bar in Iowa and they're sitting around smoking and we are resonating with them," Block replied. "I'm not the only one that smokes in America for God sake. It's a choice that I've made."

Mirrors. This was designed to raise the controversy of smoking, to distract from the fact that Cain has nothing and is nothing but smoke. He's got nothing so invent an "issue" just like the resurrection of birtherism by flippers crew.
And Megyn, why didn't you just get on your knees and yank down his zipper.

I can see it now... old veterans complaining about government, talking 9-9-9... all the while on a heavy smokers jag. And people wonder why the VA healthcare costs have tripled in ten yrs. It's all Obama's fault.

CafeenMan's picture

Funny how President Obama being a smoker was a huge big deal to right wingers and a reason he wasn't qualified to be President of the United States of America.

MJPollard's picture

Not something I'd be particularly proud of, personally, especially since these smoking wingnuts are too stupid to realize that, as the man said, their health care will be yanked out from underneath them (or made even more impossible to afford than it is now) once they reach the inevitable point of needing treatment for their lung cancer.

just an observation. logic can be just as tyrannical as superstition, and looking at our current state of affairs? perhaps the western zeitgeist is not as advanced as we presume.

that being said, it's no wonder the term "elite" is pejorative, poor old joe six pack works all week, and he can't have a frigging beer and a smoke with some tofu-eating, volvo driving, PBS watching liberal, telling him what an ignorant fool he is for sucking on that cancer stick, geez, cut a guy a break!

Just like a doctor told me once, "Paul, after all the things you've quit, just don't have the heart to ask you to quit smoking,."

I go out of my way to be the most well-mannered smoker I know, but some people don't want anyone to smoke anywhere.... to the point of a parking deck in Burbank Cali, open-air on all four sides, yet "no smoking" signs everywhere... yet one Hummer starting up in the deck, or a diesel school bus hauling past spews more crap in the air than a multitude of smokers on each floor... and you can still smoke in your car, even with the windows down. Can't be because of litter, because the same deck has more Fuddrucker's and McD's crap constantly.

These folk are such flaming hypocrites it blows my mind. Same when Lindsay Lohan's baby sister, Ashely, became pregnant as a teen, the Repugs crucified her parents and Ashely, but when Bristol became a pregnant teen, they put her on a pedestal. Long story short, Ashely married the father of her children, and Bristol is still out screwing around.

Maybe you meant to say he's 'resinating' with smokers?

SFnomad's picture

If you're going to be the spellcheck and/on grammar police, it would help if you weren't wrong.

Resonating is evoking a shared feeling or belief.
Resinating is to impregnate with resin.

I'm a liberal Democrat and do not support Cain at all, but I do think many progressives make way too much about smoking. With all the serious problems in the world, it can start to seem petty, wimpy and naggy to go on and on about it. Every time people ride in a car they might get killed. What about people who choose dangerous hobbies like race car driving? Will that have to stop, too? If the anti-smoking crowd wins this one, what bad habit do they start hounding others on next? At some point will people have to be encased in foam rubber to take a walk?
Really, what is worse:

A. Smoking

B. People starving

Sometimes it makes you wonder if a lot of liberals might choose smoking as being the worst thing in the world. It just gets to be ridiculous after a while.

innocent bystander's picture

my father probably wouldn't have taken me drag racing, had that been his "hobby", but he did take me around in our family station wagon, because, you know, we had to do things like get to work and the store and school and the doctor's, but he also closed me up in that station wagon with the smoke from the cigarettes that he chain-smoked ... yeah, it was his choice, and no kids starved because of it, but it ended up killing him, leaving me without a father at age 14, and now it's killing me

no biggie ... and we certainly couldn't address cigarette smoking, both 1st- and 2nd-hand, as a serious and seriously addictive health threat while also addressing world hunger ... and war ... and police brutality ... and wall street corruption ... and ...

there is a time ... when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part. you can't even passively take part -- mario savio

Shasta4737's picture

In the first message above I meant to add that I do think smoking should be banned in most places such as family restaurants, businesses etc. It just seems like the anti-smoking people can't stop now. It's silly to ban it outside and in bars, private clubs, nightclubs, etc.
Why do causes like this where we force people to do what is good for them always seem to turn into some Carrie Nation like feeding frenzy?
I know that some people are truly allergic to smoking and their health should be safe guarded, but I don't see how not allowing people to smoke in their own cars makes a lick of difference.

PS. It is not only liberal Democrats that are caught up in the anti smoking fever. Republicans and others can be even worse.

Is this guy the Beast of the Apocalypse or what? When so many TV pundits could not figure out the subliminal message (actually, just message: it is right there!), I wondered, think about it: the dour-faced campaign employee tokes up and glowers, followed immediately by a wicked smile by Cain. Now isn't it obvious: this is a reference to what Repubs call "the Nanny State," which "demonizes" smokers, just another instance of government regulation on steroids, &c. The message is: I am against regulation of businesses. I mean, Citizen Cain was a CEO! He tows the Teaparty-Norquist line telling us that even in the wake of the Wall Street-bank-real estate speculator meltdown, what America really needs is less regulation, not more. We have heard it all before. They're like broken records.
