Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney may be in the lead in the Palmetto state, but that doesn't mean South Carolinians necessarily like him.

During a Fox News debate at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Monday, the Republican audience booed loudly after being told that Romney's father was born in Mexico.

In a report last week, NBC revealed that Romney's great grandfather, Miles Park Romney, had fled to Mexico with other Mormons to escape persecution for polygamy. Romney's father, George, was later born in the northern Mexico colony of Colonia Dublan.

At the age of five, George Romney returned to the United States illegally after the Mexican Revolution broke out.

"With regards to immigration policy, that those that come here illegally should not be given favoritism or a special route to becoming residents or citizens that's not given to those people that stayed in line legally," the candidate told debate moderator Juan Williams. "I think we have to follow the law and insist that those that have come here illegally ultimately return home, apply, get in line with everyone else."

The audience later booed again when Williams asked if former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had "belittled the poor and racial minorities" by declaring that black Americans should demand jobs, not foodstamps.

Audiences at other GOP debates have booed a gay soldier, cheered the death penalty and cheered child labor.

UPDATE:

As usual, the MSM didn't credit John Amato's post about Romney's family and their polygamist Mexican exodus back in 1885. Since this story was published "Romney Family Files: Fled to Mexico Due to a Polygamy Ban Making Them 'The First Displaced Persons of the 20th Century'" many other news organizations are digging into the story.

That crowd last night would have booed Jesus giving a man back his eyesight. They were nuts and then some.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Are you kidding?

They would have crucified the poor guy.

Especially for being a long haired, bearded, sandal's wearing socialist lib.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

I believe they booed the FOX commentator named Juan for broaching the subject.

But then a lot of people around here are convinced Santorum said "black."

We all know now how Mr. Santorum feels about blah people and the blah people don't like it one bit.

Those religious republicans are very good boo-ers but they do it at the strangest times. When Newt said that Obama was the food stamp president, they cheered like crazy. Were they cheering because they thought being a food stamp president was a good thing? See, they need to put a fine point on what is boo-able and what is cheer-able.

Thanks "ricky", for the clarification.

It seems likely that they booed because they think its sooo unfair when "Juan" broached a legitimate subject that relates to Romney's hypocritical stand on immigration (when one considers that his father entering the country illegally during the Mexican Revolution).

Damn librul media, always asking those poor Millionaire republicans real questions. Fox News is run by pinkos...

Poor Santorum, getting beaten up for his not-so-latent racial prejudice bubbling and frothing out when he becomes verbally incontinent... how disgusting.

last night too much credit for nuance. I think some of that crowd booed just at the mention of the word "Mexico".

Does anyone know how these audiences get selected?
Are they prescreened?
Also I would like to see once in a campaign a REAL debate like a "mace" or "oxford" style debate instead of these 2 hour soundbite orgies.

Peter G's picture

that members of this audience would have booed any question that was less than a T-ball question. Never mind soft ball.

The correct word is "prosecution". He was on the lam.

the children of immigrants (illegal at that) would be more open minded about immigration. then again you would think pro-marriage people would be for more marriage vs. less sex
or pro-life people would care more about healthcare than calling health care providers murderers. or pro-christian/freedom of religion people would be more tolerant of other spiritual ideas. or people concerned with the safety of america wouldn't be so pro-war. etc...

i guess when you boil it down the republicans don't stand for anything, they just stand for the opposite of some things. even if it's climate change or evolution. It's not that they're for anything better or even specific (unless they take genesis literally) they're just against the idea of climate change or the very notion of evolution. if your policy isn't stemming from some sort of disgust with others than what policy can you have? G.O.P. Guilt Oppression and Paranoia.

I think the GOP does stand for something - GREED, in all its guises. If profit comes at the expense of another (e.g. lives of foreigners), so much the better.

definitely the wealthy educated ones. but for most it's not being about anything accept what you feel already comfortable with which i would argue is just a raw state of being vs being "for" anything. the majority are motivated by ignorance assisted fear. hence always being against things.as an example in a hundred years they will be afraid of climate change deniers but at the moment the idea is only a generation old and is thus new and therefore "different" which = scary! ahh! the world is ending scary. once symptom is that the feeling that the world is ending.

I just flipped over to Fox to see what The Five were talking about. They were asking each person on there who were the winners and losers of last night's debate. The dark haired chick said she thought Newt was the winner. She said she liked mean people and Newt was mean.

I mean who in the hell says they like mean people? I think her attitude explains some of the response we see in these debates. I think a lot of republicans at these debates like mean people. What would their Jesus say about that?

I have always maintained, that the real knuckledragger's that make-up the GOP base are sociopath's, with psychotic personality disorder.

The reason these imbeciles can watch Fux noise all day long, or listen to Pig Boy Limbaugh everyday, is because they have no friends. They are mean, evil, stupid, anti social, and they blame the rest of society for not wanting anything to do with them.

That's why they cheer shit that makes people who are mentally stable, cringe.

In republican world they boo you because of where your father was born? Really? Damn, they will boo just about anything to hear the sound of their own voices. So how long before they ask to see Mitt's long form birth certificate?

This morning on Morning Joe my husband and I both understood Joe to say the republicans were more accepting of women than the democratic party. We both stopped in our tracks and in unison said, "What the hell?" It was not long after Peggy Noonan came on the set. No one challenged Joe's statement. It was the weirdest thing. Perhaps someone can find that clip. If we heard it right, it's a classic Joe comment.

about my fellow Liberals is this attitude concerning the "right" that "if only they knew the facts, they would come around to our way of thinking!" News flash! They know; and odds are they will never empathize with people unlike themselves. So, where does that leave us?

Newt declared that the union Janitors in NY were making far to much! He proposed to fire the adults and replace them with about 30 children at what I assume would be "slave wages". Notice old Newt did not back off his earlier position, or Wimp-out as most "liberals" turned progressive these days seem to do.

really? Were there immigration rules between the 2 countries? I ask because when I was researching my family history, a Canadian researcher who worked with records told me that between Canada and the US there were no real rules or laws governing immigration until 1911. Members of both side of my family moved back and forth between the two until then. Damn. I got stuck on the wrong side of the border.

Also, if his mom and dad were citizens, would that not make George a US citizen by default?

If Miles Park Romney was an American citizen when he fled to Mexico, then George Romney would have been an American citizen. Thus, Willard is as well. Just sayin'

The United States aspires to democracy, but no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power.

JohnMWhite's picture

I don't think anyone was saying Mitt isn't a citizen. George Romney obviously was eligible to be a citizen too, but was his paperwork ever really in order and was he a natural-born citizen as required by the constitution to run for president? That phrase means different things to different people. It means "not born in Kenya even if his mother was a US citizen" to people liable to vote for Romney, for example...
