A group of Republican state senators have proposed a bill that would make the Pledge of Allegiance mandatory for every public school student in Michigan.

Republican state Sen. Roger Kahn's SB 637 would also require schools to purchase a flag for every classroom.

"THE BOARD OF A SCHOOL DISTRICT OR INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT OR BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL ACADEMY SHALL ENSURE THAT EACH PUPIL IN EACH PUBLIC SCHOOL IT OPERATES IS REQUIRED TO RECITE THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES EACH SCHOOL DAY," the bill says.

The group Michigan Atheists opposes the bill, but not so much because of the phrase "under God" that students would be forced to say.

"The 'under God' is far less important to me than the entire sense that requiring the Pledge of Allegiance is just plain wrong," Michigan Atheists director Arlene Marie told South Bend Tribune. "It is divisive and there are many reasons why parents would not want their children to say the Pledge of Allegiance."

Marie explained that many of the children would be too young to understand what taking a pledge means, and some religions like Jehovah's Witnesses forbid followers from citing pledges.

"Many children in our public schools are not even citizens of this country," she added.

Christian Socialist Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge in 1892 as a part of a campaign to sell flags to schools. The words "under God" were added by Congress 1954 because President Dwight Eisenhower perceived a threat from secular Communism.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1943 that forcing students to cite the pledge was unconstitutional unless parents were given the opportunity to have the final say on whether their child participates.

"If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein," Justice Robert Jackson wrote for the majority.

"We think the action of the local authorities in compelling the flag salute and pledge transcends constitutional limitations on their power and invades the sphere of intellect and spirit which it is the purpose of the First Amendment to our Constitution to reserve from all official control."

To address those concerns, members of a state Senate committee added language to the Michigan legislation that would allow parents to opt out.

Republican state Sens. Rick Jones, Patrick Colbeck, Michael Green, Tonya Schuitmaker, Howard Walker, Goeffrey Hansen, Jack Brandenburg, and John Pappageorge are co-sponsoring the bill.

Hmmm, maybe my parents signed something giving the (Orange County public) school permission to make me pledge? I can't say I ever remember seeing anyone refuse or be sheltered from the daily pledge I took (60s, 70s).

BTW, will they require the same for home-schooled kids? Will the taxpayer pick up the tab for the flags and enforcement costs of the police sent house-to-house? Can I specify that I want a 100% cotton, US-made flag instead of a Chinese POS?

No, of course, if you home school, you can teach your kids whatever insane crap you want, in the good, classic American tradition. Just be aware if you don't have a flag displayed prominently in at least one room of your house, you will be subjected to community retraining. This is, of course, nothing like the way the North Koreans treat thier people. We will still be God fearin' capitalists.

It's a good article, but the U.S. only seems to have 5 of the 14 conditions, and it would seem neither party is much different than the other.

Of the 14 I only saw:

7. Obsession with National Security

9. Corporate Power is Protected

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption

14. Fraudulent Elections

as being representative of the U.S. to any great degree. I know there is election fraud, I've on that myself!

10. Labor Power is Suppressed, Public sector labor unions will still be preferred to private work, because the benefits are better with the public labor unions.

The Supreme Court ruled in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943) that students could not be compelled to recite the Pledge, a ruling that has been repeatedly sustained over the last 68 years. There is no doubt that this law is unconstitutional.

Theory - Republicans in Michigan won majorities in both houses and the governorship - and just like in Ohio, Florida and Wisconsin they immediately overreached by passing a raft full of draconian ALEC laws that have made them very unpopular. They foresee their new majorities slipping away in another wave election in 2012. How to hold on? Crank up the disenfranchisement machine so that Democratic leaning voters find it hard to vote - done that, check. Energize their conservative base with anti-abortion laws - done that, check. Create an ultra-patriotic and religious backlash against the evil liburls who voted against the Pledge Of Allegiance and then had it struck down by the evil liburl activist courts after it passes anyway due to the Godly GOP majority. In other words it is all about culture wars to make the voters forget what a-holes they are.

I remember back in elementary school ( way way back ) , we had to say the pledge of allegiance every morning , no one thought anything of it , once a week ( once a month ? ) the emergency / fire alarm bell would go off and we would take cover under or little school desks , practicing for the dreaded nukes that the Soviet Union was about to launch upon us ... at any moment . I remember believing completely what we were taught , that it was those poor Pinko Commie kids in Russia who were brainwashed and propagandized , but we Americans ? No way ! Years and years later you realize that Russia had nothing on the Americans when it came to fear mongering , propagandizing and lying to it's own people . America the beautiful ? It never was.

I live in Michigan and tonight I sent my state senator an email (not that he ever responds) telling that I will be watching his vote. Since this new governor and new Republicans were elected in 2010, this state has turned to a junior N A Z I state. I believe the 1943 SCOTUS means only that parents can opt their children out of the Pledge. Unfortunately, this will put those students at risk for bullying or isolation for not participating. Children can be cruel without any encouragement from the state. This is doubly troubling in view of the bullying is allowed if you are doing it as a result of religious or moral beliefs anti-bullying law that same senate passed last week.

This is starting to sound like the soviet Republic of Michigan. Now I remember why I left there after 15 years. It harkens back to stories I remember hearing about the Soviet Union in the 50's and 60's when I was growing up. Making sure that everyone showed the proper amount of patriotism. The addition of 'under dog' to the pledge in the 50s had nothing to do with Dwight Eisenhower, except that he was in the WhiteHouse at the time, and politically gutless enough to sit silently by as the crazies screamed for blood. Nixon and the religionists, of course, loved it. That whole crock came directly from the McCarthyites and the kill-a-commie-for-christ crowd, who claimed -- and may in large part have actually believed -- that no dirty commie would ever be able to say in public the awful words of forced religion. Because the commies were/are dogless, so if they said the words their skin would fall off, or something, and we'd know who they were so we could burn them at the stake, or something. And even then, at a fairly tender age, when it came up in my face, I refused to say the words when they changed. Still don't.

Knowing the truth is a good thing, regardless of how many times the soulless repetition of lies and excuses happens.

This initiative is akin to forcing prayer in schools, since conservatives and religious zealots always treat the flag as a sacred object (while totally trashing the country it stands for, of course).

At first glance, giving the parents the right to opt their kids out seems reasonable. But I don't know... That child will then be stigmatized by the rest of the children for being 'weird'. And it is conceivable that homeland security might even be notified of the refusal, if the child is a teenager, for instance.
