"If the Republicans can't break out of being the right wing party of big government, then I think you would see a third party movement in 2012," Newt Gingrich said during a Wednesday speech in Missouri.

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, the former Speaker of the House expanded on why conservatives might turn away from the Republican Party. "Republicans need to understand that there's a country which did not like the big spending of the last administration, didn't like the interventionist policies of the last administration and the country at large would like to see a genuine alternative to the Obama strategy of basical trying to run the entire economy from the white house and basically trying to increase government, I think, by 36% this year, which is the largest single increase outside of war in American history," said Gingrich.

Gingrich indicated that he wouldn't participate in a third party movement. "No, look, I lived through watching Ross Perot run in 1992 and split the conservative movement in two," he said.

John Amato:

Yea, Newt wants nothing to do with a "third party," he's just making the case for one. Nice going Newt. Gingrich started a new party in 1994 with his Contract with America, that began to kick out all moderate Republicans using the Southern Strategy and now the entire Republican party is made up of conservatives just like him. Of course he was booted out of his own party very quickly. Since his ideals have failed so miserably now---he's saying they may need another party for conservatives to express themselves and be heard.

I love the the sweet smell of revisionism in the morning.

Let them form another breakout party and further marginalize themselves into utter irrelevance.

Please, go right on ahead. It can't happen fast enough.

I don't think Newt's party will get much traction but if both parties keep going down these highly polarized paths, we may see a viable centralist movement start that may well kick both Dem's and Rep's to curb. Both sides of the isle are epically failing this nation right now.

Here in Canada, the Conservative party was split into
three units and they've not fully reunited 12 years
after the fact.

Gingrich wants to form a third party mainly because
the GOP can't stomach him and his crackpot self-importance.
Let's see a third party but one without Gingrich.
There are enough disaffected GOP to go to a third party
and others to migrate to the Democrats, that anything
left would be a political rump.

Then where would the Christian right be then?

Anyone heard from the Christian right recently?

has discovered they've been duped and used by Bush & Cheney. Some woke up and started to think politically for themselves as a result, but I'm afraid most of them have only retreated to lick their wounds and wait for the next bunch of republican promises.

I'm hoping Gingrich does put himself in front of something in 2012 (other than a speeding train, that is). Many of those good Christians can't stomach him because of his personal life and if the GOP mainstream can't find an appealable leader, it could mean the end of the so-called Christian right.

Carter said of the "Christian Right": "They are not Christian & they are not right." Newt needs to crawl back under that rock with Tom Delay.

Maybe he's planning to run as a third party candidate in 2012. There's no way in hell he'll get nominated by the Reps.

Newt is issuing a veiled threat. Nominate me or you're on your own.

If Newt's mythical group split off and formed a "real" conservative party of smaller governement, you'd find 3 parties. The left, which would be the socially liberal, the right, which would be socially conservative, and neo-Republicans which would be for limited government. Some of the more moderate lefties would become part of this new party as well. I'm not sure what the final alignment would be, but I doubt it would be 50-30-20.

... even a little attention might think twice before subscribing to Newt's 'we need a third party' nonsense, especially with him playing coy about a run for president.

I mean, really - we need a third party that adovcates Singapore's approach to drug abuse? What's next, canings?

And Newt has been out there advocating the kind of restrictions to freedom that you'd expect from fascist states - real fascist states, not this nonsense that has Jonah Goldberg wetting himself.

And the big question is, where does this new party stand on the question of race? With their lips firmly planted on Limbaugh's ass?

Please NEWT, oh please start your "new" party. You want instant and HONEST credibility? Just say you are the 21st century Contemporary version of the Dixiecrats of 1948.

You instantly get your conservative base, and the rabid Christianistas it brings with the base. You get the credibility that the "racists" will get the message from just the name of the party, and you will have a great chance to make a BIG impression in the south.

Now, what we don't want to publicize is that the Dixiecrats were the party of the Southern Democratic RACISTS. What you do want to publicize is that most of those racists that use to be Democrats 40 years ago are now Repugs, so they will love your message, as long as it contains provisions for people knowing their station in life.

NOW they are "conservative". that's part of their strategy to focus on what is/may go wrong as far as the
obama budget/bailouts. BUSH/ house republicans/treasury handed this mess to obama knowing that the country would remember who was in charge when this unfolded. they will try to blame obama for spending. to me he will never be 100% at fault regardless. i don't think newt has a chance himself at the presidency.

Gingrich indicated that he wouldn't participate in a third party movement. "No, look, I lived through watching Ross Perot run in 1992 and split the conservative movement in two," he said.

Well, Newty-baby, you don't have to worry about that. The conservative movement has cut its own political throat by being so hateful to people. A big chunk of the religious right is abandoning you.

A RELIGIOUS RIGHT CRACK-UP?

The split first emerged, on a conceptual level, about a decade ago, when Cal Thomas, a far-right columnist and founding member of the Moral Majority, write a book called "Blinded by Might," arguing that conservative evangelical Christians have been going about their efforts all wrong. Religious right activists, Thomas said, should focus less on political power and influence -- having a seat at the proverbial GOP table -- and more on religion and family.

In her Washington Post column today, Kathleen Parker reports on how this kind of thinking has grown considerably more common, to the point that many "principled Christians" are now "finished with politics."....

So, Newty, where does that leave you and all your wives?

My oh My.. what was Bushieboy's lowest approval.. 23%?? Good, the New, New Newt party can have them..---

Thats Change I can believe in... Yes you can Newt.

The GOP is already distilled down to the John Birch/racist/Galt elements. Who would stay in the party? Snow? Specter? The third party would be 95% of the current mob.

This is where the Democrats missed the true meaning of Rush Limbaugh being chosen by CPAC as their star, headline speaker. The Dems made too narrow a claim about Limbaugh's central influence on the CONSERVATIVE movement by suggesting he was merely the leader of the Republican Party.

Rush Limbaugh is the leader of ALL conservatives, whether they choose to belong to the Republican Party or cut and run from the Republican Party's record of disaster and pluck some other label out of their asses.

A Rush Limbaugh/Newt Gingrich conservative by any other name is still a Rush Limbaugh/Newt Gingrich conservative hell-bent to wage and win their Reaganesque war against this government of, by and for the people of the United States of America at all costs.

Principle #2: Avoid strength, attack weakness. Strike where and when the enemy is most vulnerable.

Newt's appearance today proves that the Republicans have never been more vulnerable. They are not his friends, and wish him only ill. Any attempt from Obama to reach out to them in a spirit of bipartisanship will only come back to haunt him later.

Strike them now when they are down, Barack! Bury them!

Don't let Newtie lie his way into revising the impact of Ross Perot on the 1992 election.

Perot took as many votes away from Clinton as he did from Bush, right wing mythology to the contrary notwithstanding.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Perot#1992_...

Indeed, Perot's primary effect in 1992 was to deny Clinton a superior popular majority that would have been a better platform to confront the emerging Newtie Republicans. Indeed, consider that no Perot in 1992 might have meant a politics in 1993 and 1994 sufficiently different to have averted the disaster that was the Contact With America and all that flowed from it. How about passing Hillary Care instead of demonizing it? How about undertaking welfare reform without the hammer of Republican congressional majorities. We might have even avoided 'don't ask-don't tell.'

And Newtie who was there for all of this - should not be allowed to turn attention from his contribution to the undermining of the Bush presidency by his opposition to 'No new taxes 'tax increases in the face of an exploding federal deficit in 1990.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Read_my_lips:_no...

Ah, Newtie is such a skank...

" I think, by 36% this year, which is the largest single increase outside of war in American history," said Gingrich."

I've got a news flash for you, Fat Head. WE ARE CURRENTLY IN TWO WARS! Just because none of your chickenhawk friends are involved in them, and just because your leader George W. Bush didn't officially register the war expenditures in the budget does not give you an excuse to forget it.

Split! Split! Split!

There isn't anything that could possibly be any better for this country than for Republicans to fragment into separate parties.

Of course the second best thing would be for Democrats to follow suit. Then we would have a real multi-party system and a coalition government. Now if only we could replace the office of president with a Prime Minister, we'd have a real democracy.

are they going to run on the "screw a bimbo while your wife dies from cancer" platform. that's a real winner.

I REALLY MEAN IT !!!

StillSickOfIt's picture

Newt, listen up. You do exactly that. You devise some way to break the repig party into smaller fractions and I will donate money to that cause. I will walk door to door in the most affluent neighborhoods of this country and spread your word that there is an alternative for people too greedy to pay their fair share of the tax burden. I'm sure we can get at least 2 out of every 10 repigs to fall for that (maybe more they are pretty stupid).

Then when all is said and done, the repig party will be small enough to drown in a bath tub. What a glorious day that will be!

and lastingly meaningful and effective "Contract with America"!!! I think it would be really great for the
republicans to split into a second or even a third party of "reform". That sure sounds good, doesn't it, REFORM, now that the republicans are saying it? That Newt is one silver-tongued devil, aint he?

I really hope they go forward with their grand scheme to reform. It all sounds so sincere. I'm sure it will bring huge numbers of voters back into their fold. They really should be pressed to advance their agenda especially when their ideas are so salient and they really have the attention of American voters.

If the conservatives split parties, I might pee my pants in glee.
