The founder of the whistleblower website responsible for releasing thousands of secret documents should be treated as an enemy of the US, according to a former Republican Speaker of the House.

Newt Gingrich became the latest conservative Sunday to suggest that WikiLeak's Julian Assange deserves to be hunted and executed Sunday by calling him an "enemy combatant."

"I approach this very seriously," Gingrich told Fox News' Chris Wallace. "Information warfare is warfare. Julian Assange is engaged in warfare."

"Information terrorism, which leads to people getting killed is terrorism. And Julian Assange is engaged in terrorism," he continued.

"He should be treated as an enemy combatant and WikiLeaks should be closed down permanently and decisively," Gingrich said.

The former House Speaker added that the Obama administration deserved much of the blame for the leaked documents.

"This is a system so stupid that it ought to be a scandal of the first order," he said. "This administration is so shallow and so amateurish about national security that it is painful and dangerous."

Gingrich, who is now a paid pundit at Fox News, is just the latest conservative to call for violence in response to the WikiLeaks releasing 250,000 secret US diplomatic cables.

Townhall's John Hawkins wrote a column last week entitled "5 Reasons The CIA Should Have Already Killed Julian Assange."

Fox News contributor Sarah Palin took to her Facebook page to suggest that Assange deserved the same treatment as terrorists and insurgents.

"Why was he not pursued with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders?" she asked.

Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told NBC's David Gregory Sunday that Assange is a terrorist.

"I think the man is a high tech terrorist…he’s done enormous damage to our country and to our relationships with our allies around the world, and he should be prosecuted," McConnell said.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was caught on video at a book signing at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, Calif. saying that the person that leaked the documents to WikiLeaks should be executed.

"Whoever in our government leaked that information is guilty of treason," Huckabee said. "I think anything less than execution is too kind a penalty."

Palin, Huckabee and Gingrich are all paid Fox News contributors who are thought to be contenders for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Gingrich indicated Sunday that he was likely to make a presidential bid.

"We're much more inclined to run than not run," he said.

Has Assange become American because he appears on American TV? Is he an anchor treasonist?

Nice talking point from Frank Luntz. Charge an Australian with treason.

hence their belief that America can do whatever it wants, and should answer to no one...

The CIA will assassiniate this man, as well as any of his defenders in 'the name of freedom'

Notice how loose the rabid are with the lable 'enemy combatant'.

How long before liberals in this country are labled 'enemy combatants, and are assasinated?

Profitable war making should not be limited to planet Earth. How lacking in vision.

Actually right wingers have argued that since a US flag was planted on the moon, it's US property (despite the fact that such a claim violates international treaties)

I wonder if the right wing American corperate fascists think the US owns all of outer space. Who 'owns' the path in which satilites orbit..

Edwin's picture

By simple (neocon) logic, the USA owns everything the human mind can see. And if they don't, they ought to. Even as yet to be discovered things.

Assange is a citizen of the corporate run New World Order. As the World's Policeman of said New World Order, the U.S. is entitled to proclaim Assange a traitor to the New World Order.

He will get a fair trial, followed by the execution.

Ol' Newt, et. al., seems just as incensed about the Wikileaks revelations as were those good German conservatives of the 1930s & '40s about the leaks of their treatment of their own citizens as well as "enemy combatants" captured in all of those "liberated" countries they overran. What is most disconcerting in all this is the response of all of those "progressive" democrats who were so big on transparency and honesty in government! Neither party is to be trusted in any of their pronouncements regarding any subject of import to the citizens of the country!

I think his pollsters told him that acting “tough on crime” (or tough on Australian people that leak) will win him votes. Pretending he can kick the snot out of somebody/anybody is soo… um… prezidentical.

IT's because the leaks reveal that their beloved Saudis finance terror abroad so that they, Republicans can stay in office. IT's because the leaks reveal the Bush administration as completely inept and at cross purposes with itself. IT's because virtually all of the leaks are inimical to Republicans.

I don't hear any such howling from democrats except for the phony, Joe Lieberman.

The Teabagger John Birch Republicans have taken the side of the obscenely wealthy and are waging war against all non-billionaire Americans. The class war is ON, and the enemy is winning. Gingrich & Co. need some indefinite detention and enhanced interrogation, since our country is confronted with ticking economic and environmental time-bombs. There's no time to lose, we've got to round them all up and ship them off to Guantanamo forever.

"This is a system so stupid that it ought to be a scandal of the first order," he said. "This administration is so shallow and so amateurish about national security that it is painful and dangerous."

Actually, I'll bet Obama inherited the whole "system" from Bush the Decider, who never allowed 9-11 to happen on his watch.

Gingrich, the Rethug, the one who wants a security state to keep the rich feeling secure, the racist hate monger, should be declared an enemy combatent, as should Rush, Beck, Malkin and Coulter, but Obama, the Weak, is too much of a push over centrist compromiser to actually do anything really effective.

this is what happens when those in charge have no idea what new tech is all about

used to be that to get secrets out of secure gov facilities, one either had to steal docs, or take pics

now...all it takes is a jump drive...which are so small, they can be hidden anywhere

and once that data is taken, disseminating it is as simple as clicking a mouse

our laws are antiquated, as are our security measures

would have helped had the gov, instead of pursuing and then locking up the og hackers back in the 80s (like one of my good friends) they had employed them all

oh well....newt just keeps showing why he must win the repuke nom....with him at the head of the ticket...obama cannot lose

have these assholes even read the stuff? low level, mostly embarrassing shit.

AND it was a situation exascerbated by the Bush/Cheney regime which could not the great federal government give away to friends, political allies and the military industrial complex. There are some functions of government that are the sole perview and responsibility of the government. In their haste to demonize government workers and expand privatized services the government has crossed the line. The government information hiway, is full of possibilities for hackers and need the specialized, focused protection of the government. Blackwater is providing security for the State Department when they have proven untrustworthy and bottom line oriented. They render services to the highest bidder. This is putting the american national security at risk with careless disregard.

the release of the WikiLeaks material. Then I'd like to see a list of all the people killed by the illegal invasions and occupations on Afghanistan and Iraq. And a list of people killed by the US torture of 'enemy combatants.'

I wonder which list[s] would be longer. I wonder if a WikiLeaks list could be produced.

Where were these assholes and their concern when Valerie Plame's name was being leaked? By real traitors, high ranking officials in the govt the treasonous Vice President, the traitor Dick Cheney, even? Is that crickets I hear? yep.

NoBuddy's picture

I'm seeing a lot of comparison of Julian Assange and Dick Cheney/Richard Armitage.
That's not a good comparison because a publisher is being equated with a leaker.

The correct comparison is PFC Bradley Manning and Dick Cheney/Richard Armitage because a leaker is being compared to two other leakers.

Assange would need to be compared with, say a Robert Novak (deceased), both involved in publishing the leak.

Meanwhile, a lawyer for the founder of the Wikileaks website said he was holding back secret material for release if anything happened to him.

There is a large encrypted "insurance" file that has been distributed. You can be sure that from Moscow, to Peking, to Tehran, the appropriate intelligence agencies have a copy. What they'll do is publish the key, or password to decrypt the file. The file is reported to be over 1 gigabyte large.

Oops....accidentally closed the window. Hope this doesn't show up twice.

I have long been convinced that repukes are evil. This grinch convinces me more than ever that they are evil, lying, hypocritical bastards who will say anything to attack their political enemies and get into power.

When the Dixie Chicks made their comments about being embarrassed that bush was from Texas, repukes went insane. I don't know if the grinch said anything, but people of his ilk did.

Now gingrich goes on a national cable show and blames Obama for the leaks; he blames Obama for this system which was in place during the bush administration. If he really hates Assange, go after Assange, not the President.

I also have to ask gingrich a serious question. He wants to go after, hunt down, and kill Assange, and he also blames Obama for the leaks. What does that say gingrich and his ilk want to do to Obama? This is serious treason of the highest order; this is a serious threat by gingrich of the highest order.

One last thing about this little puke who is thinking about being POTUS. Look how he treated his first 2 wives. Look at how the hypocrite went after Clinton for lying about a BJ when the grinch himself was cheating at the time on his wife. Look at his the grinch goes after Obama.

These are hateful people who do not treat others with respect. How will he treat people in this country if he, God forbid, ever got into the position of POTUS?

Evil. Pure evil.

NAILIN_PALIN's picture

Price Never thought I'd say this, but I agree with Newt Gingrich!.

Not that Assange is a terrorist, that's boilerplate, right wing crap, but he is right about the malfeasance and weak-kneed actions of the Obama administration.

How can this much material get out? The only answer i can come up with is incompetence.

I don't believe that this is the work of just ONE PFC. there has to be more people involved than than our government is letting on.

Perhaps, in a nice bit of irony, Wikileaks could get to the bottom of this since it is clear that the media wants to go after the sensationalism of Assange as evil, villain and not after the larger, more important issue.

General Jack D. Ripper's picture

Well, yeah, that is a big question....how can so much material get out.

However, I also wonder when it actually got out? I'm wondering if some of it leaked during the Bush administration and it was just being stored for awhile by WikiLeaks?

I also think it's a possibility it was a republican plant to make Obama look bad. As mentioned before, these repukes will say (and do) almost anything to get into power.

miss_kitty's picture

IOKIYAR.

Assange is a journalist doing what journalists are supposed to be doing. If our national propaganda organs were doing journalism instead the manipulative propaganda that they do, if their true function was to inform instead of manipulate people into supporting those things which harm them and their society, Assange wouldn't have have to assume the role. The only thing odd about it all is that his instrument of journlism, Wikileaks, is the only organization actually doing its damned job. Far as I'm concerned, Assange is a patriot of the highest order.

In effect, what the Sociopath Gringritch is saying is that any organization that has the unforgivable gaul to do its job, instead of propagandize on behalf of the Dark side should be line up against the wall.
