Dowd: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told CNN's John King that President Barack Obama doesn't believe people are protesting him because he is a black man. "I don't think the president believes that people are upset because of the color of his skin," said Gibbs.
In her Sunday column, Maureen Dowd said that race is playing a part in the vocal opposition to Obama.
But Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the office of the president — no Democrat ever shouted “liar” at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq — convinced me: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it.
John Amato:
While Dowd writes some of the most insane stuff I've seen, she does mix in some truths as well and I'm surprised she makes this observation. It's apparent to anybody that has eyes in their skulls what's been going on. There is a large amount of people in this country that do not like President Obama because he's black. Just watch the news once in a while or do some reading. Don't ever expect Gibbs or anyone in the White House to say this publicly because the media would go crazy over this, but we know it's true. And the conservative movement has been hijacked by the crazies even before Clinton took office. It's not a new phenomenon. What is shocking is to see the hatred on display so out in the open and being encouraged by the media. Glenn Greenwald takes up the case in his post: Is the Right's attack on Obama's legitimacy new or unprecedented?
This is why I have very mixed feelings about the protests of conservatives such as David Frum or Andrew Sullivan that the conservative movement has been supposedly "hijacked" by extremists and crazies. On the one hand, this is true. But when was it different? Rush Limbaugh didn't just magically appear in the last twelve months. He -- along with people like James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Bill Kristol and Jesse Helms -- have been leaders of that party for decades. Republicans spent the 1990s wallowing in Ken Starr's sex report, "Angry White Male" militias, black U.N. helicopters, Vince Foster's murder, Clinton's Mena drug runway, Monica's semen-stained dress, Hillary's lesbianism, "wag the dog" theories, and all sorts of efforts to personally humiliate Clinton and destroy the legitimacy of his presidency using the most paranoid, reality-detached, and scurrilous attacks. And the crazed conspiracy-mongers in that movement became even more prominent during the Bush years. Frum himself -- now parading around as the Serious Adult conservative -- wrote, along with uber-extremist Richard Perle, one of the most deranged and reality-detached books of the last two decades, and before that, celebrated George W. Bush, his former boss, as "The Right Man."
Bob Somerby continues on and writes:
By the summer of Clinton’s second year in office, two active attempts were made on his life. One guy even flew a small plane into the White House, apparently trying to kill him. Colbert King doesn’t seem to remember. Might we suggest why that is?
You see, King is part of a media “elite” which enabled—or encouraged—the lunatic claims against Clinton, then Gore. Perhaps for that reason, people like King have airbrushed that decade—and they express their vast surprise when the same thing is done to Obama. Meanwhile, King name-calls two minor crackpot pastors—and forgets to name the powerful players who are vastly more responsible for the lunatic claims against Obama.
King is brave when it comes to naming no-names. Where are the names of the powerful players who have really been driving this lunacy?
Somehow, when it comes to such names, people like King seem to get light-headed. They may feel their knees start to buckle.
There have always been local lunatics like Anderson and Drake in our politics. But the movement went national in the 1980s, when Rush Limbaugh moved to New York. King has criticized Limbaugh a few times—in the last year, that is. But Limbaugh drove the lunatic hatred against the last Democratic president (Hillary Clinton helped kill Vince Foster!)—and King never mentioned his name, not once, during that whole brainless era. (Nexis archives.)
King openly criticized Jerry Falwell—after the 9/11 attacks, that is. But Falwell’s name never appeared in his column during the 1990s, when he pimped those murder claims all around. Somehow, King failed to notice that ugliness. Or perhaps he was too scared to speak.
Like the bulk of his weak, weak-minded cohort, King failed to act in the 1990s. This morning, he seems to have forgotten that the decade happened at all.
Might we make a long story short? King and his cohort bought all the crap against the last Democratic president. Some of them actively encouraged the hatred; some of them simply enabled it. But by October 2000, King could barely bring himself to say a word in favor of Candidate Gore. To recall the pained column in which King made himself say that Gore would probably be somewhat better than Bush, see THE DAILY HOWLER, 1/26/09. In that column, you see how thoroughly these weak-minded people failed you in the last decade.
King and there rest of his cohort drank the Kool-Aid during that decade—gulped it lovingly down. Now, they pretend that the era never occurred—and they express their vast surprise when the same lunacy is aimed at Obama. They are amazed to see what’s being said about this new Democratic president. And they diddle their cowardly brains: It must be his race, they proclaim.
In this way, people like King refuse to tell the real story. Here it is:
Your discourse has been this way for decades. A powerful movement generates ludicrous claims against all major Democrats. They did it to Clinton, then to Gore—with King’s blessing. Now, it’s being done to Obama.
So far, no one has flown a small plane into the White House. But in the past, it was tried.
King ran off and hid in the woods while this was being done the last time. (He was still bad-mouthing Hillary Clinton in the familiar old ways as late as summer 2008.) Now he pretends it just didn’t happen. And he makes it hard for liberals to argue the truth—to help the public see the big picture about our devolving culture.
This isn’t about unfortunate nuts like Pastor Anderson. It isn’t about an unfortunate nut like Drake, who at least is an equal opportunity kook. (He also wished divine retribution on Pastor Rick Warren this year.)
This is really about the names—and the movement—which don’t appear in King’s column. It’s about multimillionaire stooges like Limbaugh and Hannity—and so many others like them. It’s about Charles Grassley—and Sarah Palin. It’s about the astonishing Betsy McCaughey, the “misleader-in-chief” from 1994 who still can’t seem to get herself profiled in Colbert King’s weak-kneed newspaper.
When it comes to the establishment Washington Post, the fake McCoys can’t get arrested.
Uh-oh! Charles Grassley is an accepted figure in Establishment Washington. Voters deserve to hear what he’s done. But Colbert King won’t say his name. To this day, he never has.
It's been going on for years and the media elites are terrified to ever say a word about it and this blatant deep seeded hatred will continue for many more decades unless the media doesn't act the cowards they have been for all these years and expose the nuts and stop promoting their insanity for ratings. Someone is going to get hurt and very soon.
I think Dr. Tiller and his family have already paid the ultimate price, don't you?

83% in the Northeast; 63% in the Midwest; 60% in the West.
So that may well be a Democratic problem in that region with nothing to do with Obama's background or the color of skin but these numbers, if accurate, are astonishingly low.
And whenever someone mentions Obama's slipping approval numbers it should be noted that this is entirely in one area of the country who have a problem with this particular president.
Others can ask why.

I did the next best thing, I contributed to his Democratic opponent in the next election, Rob Miller.

Alan Grayson for President, Elizabeth Warren for Vice President, and Paul Krugman for Secretary of the Treasury!
The "south" just didn't like anyone or anything. Republican Party (in general) was highest, and even they didn't break 50%.
Barack was 28%, but heck Boehner was 27%! Barack beats Beohner!
No, the south is not happy ...
Nah, it's because he's President, a Democratic AND black.
It would be different if he were just President and a Democrat.
The hysteria over this particular President by the rightwing might not be though.
"black" is just icing on the cake. The fact is, it's still a cake. The problem is, some people only see the icing. They don't even think about the cake underneath.
these kind of protests would be blamed on her being a woman; how some people can't accept a powerful woman. Nope, it's the Democrat label. If you don't believe me, just use your imagination and picture angry crowds protesting President Condoleeza Rice. It simply wouldn't happen. She would get respect from the wingnuts despite being both black and female.
Condi was given bush's blessing so that made her Okay to the right.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
PLUS she was totally incompetent.
That is very important to these ideologically motivated kooks. So important they overlooked her lesbianism.
It made her ok to be SOS, but most of the extreme whack jobs that hate Obama don't even know what SOS does. If Condi had run for VP it would have been a completely different story, which is why I never took those rumors that she was being floated for the VP spot seriously.
If Hillary was president most of the same people who are freaked out by a black man would be equally freaked out by a powerful woman. Its not an either/or kind of thing, yes a white man like Clinton engenders a lot of hate just for being on the wrong side but its compounded by racism or sexism.
the teabaggers, including the women, would be screaming "PMS! PMS!"
NOBODY 2012

Steele is a place holder to prove they have a black man in their party too. Just as Palin was a place holder to prove they had a woman in their party too. They don't understand it's not just a person who is black or female, it's about having a person who knows what they hell is going on and is smart enough to deal with all sorts of problems. The gender or race are secondary.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
that a black GOP member who does as they are told would not upset them. Michael Steele is a joke. BHO is all the things Steele isn't. I think that there are separate groups or levels within the GOP, and their motives are different. The wing nuts hate him because he is black. The smarter ones know this, and use it to cause trouble. The big question in my mind is this: To which group does Wilson belong?
I think he belongs to the group who still cannot bring themselves to allow that there is a black man in the white house. Wilson's history points that way.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
But is he a wing nut or an inciter? That's what I am trying to figure out.
He knew when he yelled out those infamous two words that he would make points with his good old boys back home and other sickly places. Sure he took some heat but the love he got from his own kind may be priceless.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
My uncle, a retired cop, and his wife moved to SC a few years ago to play golf. They're coming home as soon as they can sell their house. Boy, does he have stories to tell.
I hope he belongs to the FORMER House of Representatives group!

couldn't keep Michael Steele from being an object of total derision.

and unfortunately it won't change the fact that so many of Obama's detractors refuse to behave as adults and conduct themselves accordingly too...
Like John says in his post, the white house can never say this is a racial thing because all hell would hit the fan if they did. The president grew up in this country so I'm pretty sure he knows racial shit when he sees it. He has to stay above this and do his job.
Meanwhile the crazies are being used like attack dogs for reasons that have no benefit to them at all. If someone could just show them how they are being used and how it will, in the end, cause them harm, maybe this crap could cool down if not stop completely. The insurance companies and others don't give a damn about the tea baggers but they do give a damn if they can use them to put enough pressure on congress to get what these big businesses want. I would imagine these very people we saw in DC this weekend are just as close to financial disaster if they become seriously ill as anyone else, if not closer. But they are too stupid or too hateful to care.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Race intensifies the hatred. But the hatred was there under Clinton, directed both at the President and the First Lady. It was irrational and based on made up horse manure spread largely by the right wing noise machine at first, but pandered too in the end by the mainstream media. History is repeating itself.
To the extent race is involved, when the mainstream media promotes this, it gives itself an excuse to ignore what happened in the 90's and the role the media played during that period. That is a major part of Somerby's point.

Hatred is near impossible to fix, too. It's a real shame that they get so much attention, especially when it encourages closeted bigots to reveal themselves, like Joe Wilson.
Jeez, do they have open air, walk all around and shout to the treetops closets where you live? The only thing people of a certain type do in the closet is force themselves on the help.

They are just in denial and think that just because they are on a progressive board they are above the fray. From now on I will keep a log so I can cut and paste it back at them!
because he's black. But I do agree with scarce that it is mostly in the South. My sister in law has her own business in the South and she said that after President Obama was elected she didn't see her regular customers for a coupe of months. When they came back they said that they were "scared" and they held up in their houses getting their "affairs" in order and buying guns, etc. They were truly scared because there was a black man in the White House.
Then during the health care debate I saw people crying and carrying on about "Where has the America I grew up in gone." These were all white Americans and they were referring to the all white towns and the all white schools they went to.
My brother was in a bar after the election in Vegas and he chuckled to the bartender that there are a number of white guys that are having a problem with this election. The bartender said, "I am," and walked off. My brother thought he was safe in expressing his amazement that anyone would have a problem with this in progressive Vegas.
Bottom line.......yes, it IS because President Obama is black. There are a LOT of white Americans that are having a problem with this. There are a LOT of Americans that have gotten use to their comfort zone of all white neighborhoods, schools and churches, and they need to realize that the WORLD is small and they are in the minority. India, China, Japan, etc.
Of course there are a lot of white americans who have a problem with this President and his skin tone.
Guess what---IT'S THEIR WORLD THAT'S SMALL.
In THEIR small, sterile, whites-only world, nothing else exists except FuckNews, CNN and the constant force-feeding of their own ignorant home-grown BS...As a typical old geezer, I can remember that "imbecile from Wisconsin" (my dad's words, not mine) McCarthy who had a certain segment of the population scared shitless over Communists, anarchists, and "the boogeyman of the week"more than 50 years ago. That part of the equation doesn't seem to have changed much. Is that what makes this country great? Nah.
What makes me even sadder is the presence of the Oreos among them.
It seems to me that their presence in any part of this reminds me of a bunch of Indians watching the Sand Creek Massacre and yelling out encouragement to the Army troops...it's just sick.
Ignorance has reared its ugly head again.
However, we can hope that it will be vanquished. Or at least set back a bit.
It's everywhere. I never thought I'd see that kinda crap here on the coast in Central Cal. And it's worse if you go inland even 10 miles.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
racism. This is the area that had one resturant in the 1980's that had a sign that said "We don't serve n_____s," if IIRC. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't even wanna guess what the racists in the area are thinking or saying. People suck.
I've never seen change without a fire
Vegas is less than progressive, in fact for as sleazy and under-belly as it is, it's rather regressive (I live here). We have lots of oldsters (no state income tax, warm weather); big air force base; huge Mormon community and it used to be one of those places where you can have very little education and get a decent job with decent benefits. Our newspaper is a conservative rag that makes high school papers look professional. You can even find conservative strippers and hookers, ah, the irony. I've lived lots of places and it's one of the lamest, most dichotomous places I've ever lived.
.
Many of us have been saying so for a long time, but the best evidence for me that the wingnuts are very much aware of the racism, comes from the way they turn on their own.
The latest is LGF, long the home of Clinton-haters and Bush apologists, under attack for pointing out that maybe all this racist talk is bad for America.
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all
A lot of whites are realizing they may become a minority in their lifetime. I think they know how they treat minorities, and are scared. That's part of the whole quiverful craze (if we hurry we can still outbreed the demographics!).
So with some it is more complex than just "I hate him he is black.". For some is more the fact that by being black he is a sign of the impending apocalypse (by demographics). A devout catholic mestizo (native-born) with two Mexican parents would have been equally terrifying and generated the same birther crap I think. As long as there wasn't a reassuring "Republican" label.
whites of the weak-minded persuasion very paranoid about what will happen next. I've seen it before with elderly white folk, unfortunately.
I've never seen change without a fire
They're scared shitless that they'll be treated the way they treated other people. It's the only life they know. So they expect it in return. So now, they play the victim.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
It will be, and already is for many, a bitch for these people. Hate returns to hate.
Politics is for the present, but an equation is for eternity. Albert Einstein
and I strongly believe that negative emotions and actions are usually fear based-if you can get to the real bottom of things- but I don't see how complexity of a situation negates racism.
There may be whites who fear being outnumbered, but we are still along way from equality within the power structure and institutions of this country.
My point was, the wingnuts know they are being racist as hell,(regardless of the foundation) and are willing to eat their own in their defense.
I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the republic which it established, one nation from many peoples, promising liberty and justice for all

I get a lump in my throat when I think that we might lose Obama the way we lost Jack and John Kennedy. I think that the Secret Service is well aware that racism makes President Obama's jeopardy much greater than any other president we have ever had.

This morning on Morning Joe, Lawrence O'Donnell gave some history on Joe Wilson and his racist background. Joe asked Pat Buchanan if he thought Wilson was a racist. believe that people like King drop the ball because they are cowardly journalists, or incompetent journalists, or that they are corrupt journalists or even stupid journalists. I believe they do what they do precisely because they are not, in fact, journalists. Rather, they do what they do, because they are dedicated and highly competent propagandists. It is their business to lie, decieve, obfuscate, deceive through act of ommission and to manipulate. Their only purpose is to manipulate, not inform. Their purpose has never been to inform. They have fully bough into the causes on which behalf they propagandize.
From that perspective, operatives like John King are very skilled at what they do, they are not cowardly incompetents. Also from that perspective, it does nothing but waste energy to hold even the smallest sliver of a hope or expectation that they will ever perform as journalists. It's. Not. Going. To. Happen. Holding that expectation only gives them power over us, because we become victims of our own futile hopes and expectations.
It would be more useful to accept them for what they are, so that we don't waste time or energy in hopes that they will suddenly reform themselves and do the right thing. Accept that they not only do not serve the people, but are dedicated adversaries to the principles for which legitimate journalism stands. Accept that they are irrevocably antithetical to the role that journalists are supposed to play in a free and liberal democracy...their every act and word shows that these concepts are anethema to them.
Instead of hoping that they will do the jobs of journalist, it would be better, and better for us, to expose them for what they are. Name them by the game they play. Name them as liars and manipulators, and then name their lies, deceptions and manipulations as they are played out. Be relentless and pitiless in naming them for what they are. Do not treat them as journalist; treat them as propagandists and operatives who work in service to a cause that can only harm the near totality of people in this country, should that cause be realized. They deserve zero respect, not even the simplest of common courtesies.
Accept that the so-called MSM is a self-declared enemy of a free and liberal democracy. It is a perception management instrument of a corporate would-be oligarchy that has been deployed solely for the purpose of undermining the healthy function of a democracy, a democracy that derives it's sole authority to function and exist from the sovereign will of the People. It boots nothing to expect that this vast machine is ever going to work in the service of any other's interests than that of the corporations.
If we can get past unrealistic hopes and expectations about these guys, maybe we can begin the work of really neutralizing their influence and impact on our nation. But that can't happen unless our eyes are wide open.
JMO
I would change only one thing: "...a democracy that should derive it's sole authority to function and exist from the sovereign will of the People."

"It’s about multimillionaire stooges like Limbaugh and Hannity—and so many others like them. It’s about Charles Grassley—and Sarah Palin."
This is very true. The "death panel" thing came from Palin.
A few months ago, I actually heard limpballs on his radio program say that the Democratic healthcare bill will favor treatment of Democrats over Republicans. About two weeks ago, the GOP apologized for a mailer they sent out which strongly inferred that a Democratic bill will indeed favor Democrats over Republicans. The GOP said that that mailer was "inartfully" (sic) worded. But you know damned well that someone at the GOP worded that statement on purpose; he more than likely heard limpballs make his own statement a few months ago.
These people keep pushing the barriers of decency. I am absolutely convinced that if a health care plan passes with something these assholes do not like, one or more of them will push the barriers once more and openly talk about physically harming Obama. I am convinced that they will, and that someone will take them up on it.
Oh this video is priceless. A few days ago, O'Reilly had Beck on his show to talk about racial issues. Beck said he is tired of this racism thing. You think?

These guys are such jackasses. It goes without saying....beck just called Obama a "racist" a month or so ago. Has he so destroyed his brain cells that he cannot remember that? Certain o'reilly remembers that. WTF?
Their audience has the memory of a gnat. They are tuned in to only remember the bad shit beck and bill say about this president and of course, who could forget, ACORN.

Stupidity is your twisted logic.
She said, it was Wilson's "shocking disrespect for the office of president" that convinced her SOME PEOPLE just don't like a black man as their president.
Bush was a liar, and nobody ever called him one publicly.
Obama isn't a liar, yet he was called one publicly.
I think that makes a pretty good case that some people, NOT ALL PEOPLE, just can't stand the fact that a black man is president. Along with all the other evidence that people are gunning for Obama, based on no real facts.
Anyone this naive should not be the spokesman for the White House.
Except that I accuse him of lying. He DOES know that this is about race - but they don't want him to say that.
*
Of course, everybody knows it's about race. But the moment he makes this about race, they've won.
Can you imagine what Commandant Beck and Chairman Limbaugh will say if Gibbs suggests the president thinks all these people are racists and don't have legitimate complaints?
He did the right thing. Stick to substance. Let their racism speak for itself.
imagine alright! Even metaphors get them up in arms, especially when, dare I say it, a perceived brown person gives it.
I think BHO knows that.
The most obvious code for racism is in the common phrase: "My country doesn't LOOK LIKE it used to." I think we all know what that one means, and I've heard it over and over again from the neo-cons.
I know Gibbs can't come out and call Obama's most feverish opponents racists, but this whole act of treating the rabid, southern right-wingers like they are reasonable people who just differ with the president on policy is getting old. I'd like the Obama administration to get tougher with these people and their elected representatives like that moron Joe Wilson.
What got that fire started in the first place is the fact that he's a Democrat.
I havent heard a single person say 'we dont want michael steele as our RNC chairman'.
As far as questioning the legitimacy of obama's presidency, this is revenge for questioning dubya's legitimacy as president.
Obama didn't steal 2 elections, or even one. Bush and his pals, did.
We need to start hitting these assholes harder with the truth, every time, so that the only thing that they think when they know they have the factual short end is, "If I bring this shit up, trying to put my spin on it, how hard will they get to punch me this time?".
Of COURSE these people are freaking out because they can't STAND the fact that a black man is president.
I hope their heads explode.
They know the truth in the White House and they know what kind of knee jerk reactions they will get if they say its racism. Obama believes, to his credit, that he is the President of all who are citizens. You know what the racist deniers say in return!
Obmana is racist. Sotomayor is racist.
That is fact!
john king is david gregory's twin in a petri dish. He asked the question KNOWING Gibbs would never go there. Tonight that douche hannity selectively edited an observation Bill Maher made on his last episode. Maher, Kathy Griffin and a few of the panelists were talking about the implicit and explicit racism in joe wilson's outburst. Maher then went on to show screen captures of drudge headlines, which were real, hannity then ended ythe piece before the part of the audience reacting to the tackiness of the headlines and Maher saying, 'It's not me, it is Drudge.' It continues.
When the times call for it, I don't have knuckleheads pulling my punches.
"They pour syrup on shit and tell us it's hotcakes." Meteor Blades
Should be blatant deep-seated hatred. Anybody knows that "deep-seeded" things don't grow. Let's get the damn language right, shall we? I don't want us looking like those ignorant tea-baggers. Jeez!
No doubt about it , whitey isn't diggin this at all and it's not just the heehaw Neanderthal states . To hell with them , they are a minority , what we gotta do is start organizing ourselves and counter demonstrate , we would completely dwarf them in numbers and put things in perspective for the entire country . I am a fifty eight year old blue eyed blonde and Obama is the best man , the best human being that we've had in the White House since JFK , he may well prove to be better , it is a pity that so many of my race are such pea brained ass holes ! I have my gripes too folks but we gotta stick by him and support him .
whitey several months back the usual attackers couldn't handle it from me!
Even way back in 1992, when Clinton was seen to be the Democratic front-runner, I remember the media was aghast. AGHAST, I tells ya. You see, turns out Clinton's grandfather, who raised him as a child, owned a small grocery store. And it was in an area where there were a lot of African Americans. So -- as little Bill went with his grandparents to the store, he'd play outside with the children of the patrons. This gave him more resonance with AAs.
Oh, but the MSM was just enraptured with that. It was THE big story. No, it wasn't a small human interest story. They obsessed over it. No, they didn't come right out and say "He actually TOUCHED nig*ers!" but it was about the same result.
The Republican party has always stood for and welcomed racism, hatred, ignorance and the absolute lowest of stupidity.
I voted for Obama because I believed him. He led me to believe that he could and would bring change. Was I deceived? I'm beginning to think I was.
The first Republican president I remember was Eisenhower. When JFK was elected, he did not bring us "Ike Lite". His program was the "New Frontier" and was full of new ideas and visions.
Jimmy Carter did not prolong the Nixon-Ford legacy. I could not help liking Ford, but I voted for Carter because I simply had enough of the Republicans and their scandals.
Bill Clinton did not prolong the presidency of Bush I. He realized that indeed it was the economy, Stupid, and he came in with new ideas and a new vision.
So why is Obama pandering so heavily to the Republicans? Why did he not get angry with Joe Wilson and his comment? Could his silence have been out of cowardice? I truly wonder.
I do know this. Just because I voted for Obama and his programs in 2008 does not mean that I will vote for them in 2010. If Obama is going to continue to be "Republican Lite", then I might as well vote for the Republicans in 2010.
Obama has a lot to do to convince me to continue believing in him and supporting him. Caving in to the Republicans at every opportunity will not get the job done.
