Fox News is helping a former Republican congressman spread the myth that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya.

Appearing on Fox News Monday, John LeBoutillier explained that his new fictional book uses "real things" like Obama's grandmother once claimed she was present for his Kenyan birth.

LeBoutillier's new book, The Obama Identity: A Novel (Or Is It?), seems to be referring to a 2008 World Net Daily article where a Pennsylvania man is said to have a telephone recording of Obama's grandmother.

"Ed Klein and I, when we wrote this book, used real things in a book of fiction," LeBoutillier told Fox News hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade.

"There's so much real stuff in this book. Like you asked me before we came on the air about Obama's grandmother living today in Kenya. And we have her in the book. It's fiction but in reality, she has claimed consistently that he was born in Mombasa, Kenya. She said this adamantly on the record. We took that and used it in the book in a very funny way," he said.

"I'm sure that will resonate well with everybody," Kilmeade replied sarcastically.

"I'm sure the White House will be thrilled," LeBoutillier joked.

The former New York congressman explained that his fictional Obama truly believes that he was "the one" Americans have been waiting for.

"The day he is inaugurated in our book he goes right from the Capitol back to the Oval Office and goes in there and he is greeted by his staff in a way that you wouldn't believe. They wash his feet. They have Filipino stewards come wash his feet and fan his smoking and blow the smoke out the White House window," LeBoutillier said.

"It's symbolic of how everyone around Obama treats him. They treat him as Brian said. He's like the second coming. He's the one, the messiah, this man who has been parachuted into this country to save us from ourselves," he continued.

"[T]he only way to handle Obama, I think, is to make fun of him because the guy is a ridiculous creature that we've been handed by the left."

"Once again, the book is fiction," Doocy pointed out.

"Or is it?" LeBoutillier added.

"I think it's both," Kilmeade concluded.

It's not the first time Fox News has given a platform to birther notions. In July 2009, Fox News anchor Bret Baier reported that a US soldier was refusing to deploy because Obama was not born in the US. "Baier never pointed out that Obama's American birth certificate has been produced and authenticated," News Hounds noted.

In August 2008, FactCheck.org confirmed that it had examined and verified Obama's birth certificate.

In April of this year, Fox News correspondent Wendell Goler asked White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, "Do the complaints of birthers complicate the president's dealing with the American Muslim community?"

"I got to give you credit, Wendell, for getting a lot of crazy people in one question," Gibbs replied.

"I've said this many times, Wendell. If you're -- if after I asked that the President's birth certificate be put on the Internet hasn't dissuaded you from where he was being born, I'm almost positive that no argument is somehow going to dissuade you from that," Gibbs added.

"A fictional tale of reality" should be the Fox News slogan.

I've heard that recording. A guy asks Obama's grandmother if he was born in Kenya over the phone with a translator during a loud party. Immediately afterwards, she corrects him that he was not born in Kenya. It's clearly a mistranslation, but the birthers just can't accept it.

I hope my book will destroy these myths. I'm almost finished.

The guy who's not Doocey interviewing a guy who writes fiction that has a lot of facts in it. We lie you decide. Just like Fox News. It's fiction with a few facts mixed in. "Today in the news" is the fact and after that it's all fiction.

whites characterised Blacks as apes, monkeys and/or chimps for a few hundred years. It's racist when you call/imply/illustrate Blacks as non human primates.

With bush it was the looks and the existence of 'Curious George,' being riffed on, as dimson was 'Incurious George.'

If white people had not ragged on Blacks with that over the centuries, it could probably be used w/o all the fuss. But our white antecedents ruined it for our age.

The sheer mass of total nonsense generated by the Right presents a perfect opportunity to punk some of these people. Bogus crazy stories with rightwing truthiness elements could be created and some of them would likely go viral in the rightwing universe. Then the perpetrators could reveal that the whole thing was a joke. It's the kind of thing that gets on the evening news. The nonsense spreaders would be inundated with their own nonsense. Look how Stewart's absurd portrayal of Becky got his shorts in a bunch. If they want to into Wonderland beat them at their own game.

Paul the Sax Guy's picture

Unfortunately, after you go on and reveal it to be a hoax, you will not be listened to....

I use as a point of reference the hoax perpetrated by Leo Taxil in the 19th century alleging the Masonic Lodge of Satanic worship and attributing such to the tome "Morals and Dogma."

Even today, these "quotes" are trotted out by anti-Masons, and when proven to them that the words attributed do not exist, they insist upon attributing nefarious motives to the person proving them wrong, and insisting still that the words are in that book.

Yes, I speak this from personal experience... those who have a vested interest in believing a lie will continue to believe it.

you are referring to a more rational world that doesn't exist anymore, when actual consequences existed and reputations mattered. Who perpetrates the hoax doesn't matter, it can be a group of subversive college students. This little Fox episode shows how far the media conversation has morphed into total absurdity, where truth is completely irrelevant and the pundits are coyly playing sleight of hand with reality. An effective way to counter this is to use absurdity to point out how ridiculous they are. I think cleverly designed hoaxes that turn rightwing claims on their ear can be effective.

There is always a core of people who will not be dissuaded no matter what evidence is presented. I believe there is also something like a "lazy middle" that goes with the flow, and right now Fox News is the main current. We couldn't remember the Korean or Vietnam wars. We can't remember how Saint Ronnie Reagan beat the fuck out of the poor and middle class in America, or the S&L scandals and other fruits of his deregulation.

Fuck, we have no cultural memory. Accept that when the next regime comes into power, everything will be whitewashed until history views all of this crap favorably... and if that doesn't happen, we'll just collectively forget about it.

Communism at it's BEST.

Terminology understanding fail.

Fox News is *capitalism* at its very best (it's a corporation, not "the state") ... People buy opinion, and eventually mindshare and votes. See, money can be exchanged for goods and services.

It's not right, it's probably against some law (and if not, it should be), but don't smear communism with the moniker of "Fox News". It's like having Glenn-Beck-esque "Hitler tourettes".

Alien_Overlord's picture

Republicans are "a Western version of Communism" - ask anyone who have personally witnessed. Why do you think Republicans and Communists were SO eager to compare their DICKS and couldn't stand the thought of the other side gaining any ground - it's because they are one and the same thing viewed from Socialist or Capitalist perspective.

There ain't nothing wrong with (democratically balanced) Capitalism, it''s the UBER-Capitalism that is dangerous.

hackenbush's picture

Republicans are "a Western version of Communism" - ask anyone who have personally witnessed.

Not so much. "Communism" is, by definition (thanks to Wikipedia):

... is a sociopolitical movement that aims for a stateless and classless society structured upon common ownership of the means of production, free access to articles of consumption, the end of wage labour and private property in the means of production and real estate

In which way do Republicans want a "stateless and classless society"? It could be argued very successfully that they're going for the exact opposite.

Why do you think Republicans and Communists were SO eager to compare their DICKS and couldn't stand the thought of the other side gaining any ground - it's because they are one and the same thing viewed from Socialist or Capitalist perspective.

What the fuck? I can't even say anything to that because it doesn't really seem to make any sense to me.

There ain't nothing wrong with (democratically balanced) Capitalism, it''s the UBER-Capitalism that is dangerous.

Back to the definitions. Capitalism:

Capitalism is an economic system in which the means of production are privately owned and operated for a private profit; decisions regarding supply, demand, price, distribution, and investments are made by private actors in the free market; profit is distributed to owners who invest in businesses, and wages are paid to workers employed by businesses and companies.

Democracy:

Democracy is a political form of government in which governing power is derived from the people, either by direct referendum (direct democracy) or by means of elected representatives of the people (representative democracy). Even though there is no specific, universally accepted definition of 'democracy', equality and freedom have been identified as important characteristics of democracy since ancient times. These principles are reflected in all citizens being equal before the law and having equal access to power. For example, in a representative democracy, every vote has equal weight, no restrictions can apply to anyone wanting to become a representative, and the freedom of its citizens is secured by legitimized rights and liberties which are generally protected by a constitution.

These are not the same type of thing. "Democratically balanced" capitalism, I'm assuming, is supposed to mean "well regulated".

ikalbertus's picture

rodeored's picture

Economic conservatism and communism are both based on the same assumption. They both think wealth condensation is an integral and inevitable part of capitalism and that its futile to moderate wealth condensation at the top to produce a healthy economy.

The difference is how they propose to deal with the resulting condensation of wealth at the top. The communists advocate eliminating capitalism altogether, and giving all power to the working classes, which they call a dictatorship of the proletariat. Conservatives deal with it by accepting and even encouraging it to the extent that a few of the very wealthiest people own and control the economy while most working people are stuck at subsistence levels. In other words, conservatives favor a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. The effect is the same as communism - economic failure for all but a few at the top.

Notice how both communism and conservatism both reject the middle ground and approach wealth condensation with solutions at either extreme of the same continuum. The moderate solution is to maintain capitalism while regulating wealth condensation.

Both conservatism and communism have been tried without much success, and in each case that failure can be traced directly to their failure to recognize proper government regulation can result in a healthy capitalist economy. The truth is that the government can regulate wealth condensation to create a prosperous middle class. Indeed, that's the only thing that ever created the middle class in the first place.

The idea is that, much as Mike Godwin pointed out years ago (in a manner of speaking), if you're comparing everyone to Hitler, you're probably running out of other arguments.

Glenn Beck didn't "call it first". People have been calling their opponents terrible, exaggerated things for years. Bush wasn't a Nazi (even if his grand daddy did sell them guns), Obama isn't a Nazi, Fox News isn't a bunch of Nazis.

To clarify, Nazis killed upwards of six million people. Fox News is, at most, horrifically irritating and awfully irresponsible. Irresponsible != Nazi. Nazi does encompass the value of ( Irresponsible ), as anyone with a cursory understanding of basic logical principals can tell you, just because A contains B, B does not by definition contain A.

The people who hate Obama will just accept this as fact. Who cares? There are more people out there with common sense enough to know that if McCain's camp could not come up with anything on him during the election, and the Supreme Court accepted Obama as a legitimate candidate then he is a legitimate candidate. These people just hate being governed by a black man because it shatters their little make-believe world where they imagine that they could be superior to others, while in the real world they, (the bigots) have to face their daily inferiority. It's sad really.

Of course the Fairness Doctrine was broadcast news, not cable, satellite nor internet.

This 2003 Florida Appeals Court ruling was probably more important than the Fairness Doctrine in this case.

The very idea that a network called "Fox *NEWS*" can broadcast opinion shows (without specifically indicating that they are opinion shows, I might add) is suspect. I would assume that their primary objective would be to push an "alternate version" of reality for those in the Conservative Reality Bubble.

It sure as hell doesn't hold up to even the most cursory fact-checking.

ysbaddaden's picture

To include the new technology, since originally the Fairness Doctrine was about radio, there would have to be an alternative for those who wish disseminate severely slanted news.

And because of the additions, and a lapse of something like 20 years, it would most likely be called something different.

A novel full of real "stuff" and "things."

They'll declare it a literary masterpiece.

And the Fox zombies will think it's all true.

Obama's a ridiculous creature? They knew exactly who this guy was and what he was gonna say before he went on the air. The part I thought was hillarious was the intro where the Fox clowns say, It's all fiction....but it sounds true! So let's put it on Fox. Close enough.

Had enough of FoxPAC's lies, deceptions and misinforming of our fellow citizens? Help with the Fox News Boycott.

There is an information war between the lies on the right and the facts on the left. Sometimes the facts don't comport with the views of the left, but usually they do. Most times the facts don't comport with the views on the right, so they just make up new facts.

This info, this conclusion can be gleaned from watching the media watchdogs.
