DNC Chairman Tim Kaine officially running for Senate
Democratic National Committee Chairman and former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine said Tuesday that he's running to be the next senator from Virginia.
In a newly released online video, Kaine announced that he was seeking the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Jim Webb, who is retiring after just one term.
"I'm running for the United States Senate because America has big challenges," Kaine said. "I'm convinced that Virginia has answers to help strengthen our nation… Thankfully, we still have a tradition of balance and civility here that is sadly disappearing from Washington."
"We've got to be unified and creative in this tough and completive world to expand jobs and educational opportunities in a fiscally responsible way," he added. "That's what I did as governor and that's what I'll do as your senator."
Kaine is seen as the Democrats' best hope for keeping control of the Virginia seat and helping to maintain a majority in the Senate in 2012.
Politico reported Saturday that former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland was seen as the logical replacement for the DNC chairman. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), who is popular among Democratic and independent women, was also in contention for the position.
"Some of us are just sick of there never being a woman at this table and on TV," one well-connected Democratic woman told Politico.
The 53-year-old Kaine was picked by President Barack Obama as DNC chair in 2008 while he was still serving as governor. The Virginia governor was one of Obama's earliest supporters and was widely credited with helping to deliver the state's 13 electoral votes.

Maybe he'll be a better Senator than he was the Democratic Party Chairman. 2010 was a fiasco. I miss Howard Dean.
Oh, yay. More DLC dullards. Yup, that's the winning solution.
Yeah, another DLC turd polisher - just like Obama.
"He helped get Virginia's 13 votes."
Well whoop-de-doo!
Of course O'moron fired Howard Dean who won nearly the whole dam*ed country and brought the democrats back with a passion; only to see it pissed away again in less than a year by the DLC and O'moron. But hey, what's the big deal?
Barack O'moron and the DLC - turning dark blue states red since 2009.
"Vote Obama in 2012, the African American republican choice."
.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
I didn't vote for Obamanation because he is a Republican masquerading as a Democrat. I had that feeling in my gut and didn't vote for him or Billary.
It's amazing how the DLC/New Democrat/Blue Dog crowd has managed to piss away all the effort and goodwill that 4 years of hard work by mostly Progressives put in after the Kerry fiasco.
I propose a national coming out day where fake Democrats can come out and switch parties- then a t least we will know where we stand.
go you worthless fuck...let me guess, you never once talked to howard dean for advive.he kicked ass, right?you smell like terry mac caulif, think that tools name was.,had the job before...be gone, soon.and make sure you do as good a job running for senate, you will lose,on more for 'the other'
....the fools do not realize,a population that can ,..... not paticipate .............in the 'economy'...,can not keep it viable!..........."we are listening,.......and we're not blind.,......this is your life....this is your time."
Really, who cares? I'll make sure not to donate. Useless, spineless Dim. No more, ever.
Wasserman Schultz is going to be the new Democratic National Committee Chairman I heard last night. Good? Bad? Who cares?
We really need a Howard Dean type. I am not sure that Wasserman Schultz is enough of a pit bull. Just like Kaine was not rabid enough.
Of course the Republicans won in 2010 with Michael Steele. So who knows.
Ehh, the Republicans won despite Michael Steele. Or, more to the point, the Democrats lost despite Michael Steele.
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
Just another interchangeable, plug and play corporate puppet module. She'll do a good job looking after the interests of oligarchs and plutocrats.
Oh, goody. The milquetoast who took replaced the leader who helped us win in 06 and 08, and who subsequently sucked all the momentum out of the party, is the party's best hope to keep the weakened control it managed not to lose under his mismanagement. Why, I can just feel the ground moving beneath my feet.
Why don't we just run a cardboard cutout of a human being with a big "D" for a face?
And who, exactly, "sees" Strickland as the "logical" choice, and why? Will he help us lose the Senate too?
Yeah, that's really what we should be caring about at this moment in history. The Republicans are on the verge of ruining the world again, but let's make sure we don't have a male Chair to help us stop them, even if he is the best able to do so.
And thanks so much for that, Mr. President. Nothing like ejecting the man on whose innovative campaign you modeled yours and who played no small role in your ascendancy to your current office for someone who endorsed you in one state. And what a wonderful job he has done.
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
Seems to me that's exactly what they're doing.
Yippee!
Another millionaire puppet underling of the plutocrats masquerading as a democrat.
That will fix the Senate for sure.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in
It's too bad that Howard Dean and Rahm Emmanuel don't get along. Dean did SO VERY MUCH to get the message out and raise funds. He would've been a HUGE asset to Obama during the health insurance reforms. He has charisma to burn and I can't commend him enough. I'm a fan for life.
Tim Kaine, on the other hand, is as bland as dry toast. He couldn't have kept a lower profile, and this includes himself personally as well as the entire party.
I have high hopes for Wasserman-Schultz and I hope that Jim Webb's seat goes to a liberal democrat who has as much brains as he or she does personality.
webb along with weiner and a few others are a small number of democrats who actually have a pair.
hopefully webb stays in national politics.
It was disguised as a survey...bordering on a push poll...and, it contained a solicitation for donations to the DNC. They made the mistake of including a box for additional comments. I let him know what I thought and am thinking. Told them they were out of their minds if they thought I was going to donate to a bunch of Republicans posing as Democrats. Won't vote for them either. He doesn't get it. I won't vote for him as a senator, either...he's just a GOPer operative posing as a Democrat.
A plague on the whole DNC/DLC/DCCC/DSCC house.
Wasserman-Schultz would be wise to read these comments, and take them to heart.
The DNC's (non-corporate) fund raising expectations have surely been lowered. Even so, I tend to think it's in for an extremely rude shock when it begins its panhandle for 2012 in earnest.
It's not merely that Dean was unceremoniously kicked to the curb. It's that he was cast out altogether.
It was a portent of the near pathological contempt the administration has evidenced for many millions of its supporters, voters that in 2008 rallied to the president's banner.
Its behavior towards those millions can (at best) be fairly described an act of political malfeasance.
Assuming, of course, that it genuinely gives a rat's ass which party controls the Executive branch.
yea, a big "D" and a little ick.
i don't even care enough to capitalize letters in my sentence about mr. kaine running for the senate. let me guess, he won't be a corporate whore, right? yeah, i didn't think so. Bernie Sanders for Prime Minister!
Get ready to hear a lot about Macaca. To think that a party would re-nominate someone as stupid as George Allen....It is beyond belief!
"Respect for the rights of others is peace." --Benito Juarez
I have to hand it to Kaine to keep the lowest possible profile as the chair of the DNC. I hope that the democrats can do better than him for Webb's seat.
