A Republican senator from South Carolina has used the attempted attack on a airplane bound for Detroit as an excuse to voice opposition to unions. Sen. Jim DeMint told Fox News' Chris Wallace that unionization was a threat to airport security because collective bargaining prevents flexibility.

"We have to outthink the terrorists and when we formed the airport security system, we realized we could not use collective bargaining and unionization because of that need to be flexible. Yet, that appears to be the top priority now of the administration," DeMint said Sunday.

And the rest of the republicans are a threat to the sanity of the world.

Yep, that's all the repugs got folks. Fire the airport security Bush hired. Reaganomics will cure those damn Yemeni territs.

These repugs should be kicked out of the capitol, kicked down the halls, kicked down the steps, kicked down the street and all their teeth kicked out.

If it wasn't so pathetic, these repugs would be a howl.

WTF??

Let's see if we can now tie what is a pretty pathetic attempt at terrorism (I can just see al Qaeda sitting in their caves around the television wincing with embarrassment over this one) to anything else the right doesn't like.

Why stop at unions? Let's find a way to drag in abortion, homosexuality, health care, taxes, and Christmas! Let's not forget Christmas! It's all the fault of unionising gay liberals raising taxes to pay for Santa's health insurance so Mrs Santa can have abortions!

Yeah, that makes about as much sense, too...

DeMint wants the Walmartization of airport secutrity.

nonny mouse's picture

Let's see, if we pay airport security people less than a living wage and work them all hours they're sure to be more effective at spotting potential risks. Why? Because without unions, they're in fear of losing their jobs, so naturally will work harder.

Y'gotta love that old-time Southern massa-slave mentality. DeMint obviously does. Since he's still in government, seems a lot of his voters do, too.

Even the MSM noted that the latest dumb-bomber has a daddy who is a bank vice-president or equivalent, and his brain-dead boy was living large before the bust.

I'd bet my tiny paycheck that airport security personnel from Lagos to Amsterdam and beyond were bribed. A decent union paycheck and fair treatment on the job might have made the security personnel more apt to do their job instead of selling out for an airhead brandishing his Benjamin at them.

I suppose that Senator DeMint feels more secure having security handled by contractors who hire their employees for minimum wage and who are working on airport security only until they can find something better. Brilliant idea!

Why is this terrorism? Because they use lies, hate, fear and violence to promote their extremist agenda of the higher 'Profit Margin'.
Did DeMint get around to mentioning that by de unionizing he could then OUTSOURCE the security jobs and make a bigger profit. to the destruction of the civil rights of the working class. Without unions to help the working class organize political and form a force to counteract the corporations and the rich, the working class will be enslaved. Right now, the unions are pretty weak and the Republicans are worried that they may gain power before they are in control again. They figured they are pretty closed to finishing the unions all they need is another term or two in power but they need to keep them weak.

I'm just surprised that everyone is so surprised.

It's a well known fact that terrorism and pedophilia are the root passwords to the Constitution (I'm paraphrasing here).... I thought it was all those tax cuts for the rich in Bush's term that threatened airport security. Not to mention the Iraq war. How do you get better trained, more reliable employees: by paying lower salaries or higher salaries?

He's an idiot. Let's just put private companies in charge of teaching our kids. What will happen? They'll try to cut costs as much as possible. That means cutting wages and hiring less qualified people. Soon enough, those teachers will be fleeing teaching to get a higher paying job at Walmart. Good idea.

With the unions strong, there wouldn't be a GFC. When more people are making a living wage, that's more money flowing into the economy.

hackenbush's picture

My father told me the same sort of thing regarding health insurance companies. They try to do cost/benefit analysis to determine which procedures work best. But they have no metrics for benefits, so they only pay for the cheapest chicken.

Much is the same issue with trusting any sort of essential services to unregulated capitalism. Left alone, these systems eventually result in one "winner" and a ton of "losers". The "winner" then adjusts the rules to keep potential opponents from coming into play (See DMCA, Sonny Bono Copyright Act, Microsoft buying off justice department investigations through the Bush Administration, etc for examples of this). Innovation is stifled, progress isn't made.

And that doesn't even touch on essential services. Privatizing those is stupid to the highest degree. And we've been living that stupid since the advent of the private insurance industry....

I can't think of any industry which has been substantially improved (and that includes consumer benefit) by privatizing.

Dark_Hawk_98's picture

DeMint just created a sound-bite for his future run for president to try to show to people that he is a prescient candidate. A very transparent attempt too in my book. The very fact that his bringing up unions in the context of that discussion is the proof.

razzamatazz's picture

Yeah, I know what he's talking about! I hate when I call 911 and all of those union dispatchers, firefighters, police, and EMT's all drop whatever they're doing to respond to my personal emergency. The way they do it without hesitation or reservation and put their own lives on the line, day or night, is really dragging this country down. They could all stand to be a little more flexible.

Since the TSA contributes nothing to aviation security, how could unionization possibly make them less effective.

Captainalan's picture

How soon they forget! The republicans have made so much political hay from 911 that one can only wonder why DeMInt would insult the memories of those brave first responders who answered the call to the Twin Towers in lower Manhattan that fateful day. Even the firemen and police officers who had just gotten off shift that morning responded to the crisis! Union Members All!
By making statements connecting unions to terrorist threats against this country and accusing unions of preventing the proper function of airport security shows his ignorance, his biases and his unnaturally low moral character! Demint should be hauled into the well of the Senate and made to apologize to the families of New York City's heroes and to first responders everywhere who put their lives on the line every day for us and who just happen to be, yes, members of unions!

The senator can kindly "GO TO HELL!"

He does realize that these airplanes do originate from outside the country where airport security is looked after by foreigners who are not in U.S. unions?

His logic does not make any sense whatsoever.

What do union members in the U.S. have to do with security personal and processes in Nigeria or Holland?

Classy. Reminds me of Gingrich's "This is the Clinton legacy." remark immediately after 9/11. The fact is it's pretty much been dumb luck that we have avoided another attack like this. We think we're the world leaders in fighting terrorism but in reality we can't tell a terrorist from the tooth fairy.

Gloriapower's picture

After the unions are gone from airport security what do you have? You have less good security than ever. Employees who have hours that are too long, who might work split shifts, and who work while sick because they have no sick days nor insurance are not paying attention. Employees who are badly treated do not do their jobs well as they are focused on their problems.
When Reagan refused to give air traffic controllers what they need it was a disaster.

razzamatazz's picture

On 9/11 almost every banker with a suit and tie was running from the danger, while real Americans carrying union cards in their pockets were running towards it.
