David Brooks: Sarah Palin is 'a joke'
By David Sunday Nov 15, 2009 10:30am
Columnist David Brooks is a conservative that isn't blindly devoted to former Gov. Sarah Palin. "She's a joke. I can't take her seriously," he told ABC's George Stephanopoulos Sunday. "The idea that this potential talk show host is considered seriously for the republican nomination, believe me, it will never happen. Republican primary voters are not going to elect a talk show host," said Brooks.
But the other conservative on the panel with Brooks wasn't buying into the Palin frenzy either. George Will thinks Republicans can do better. "Some conservatives think they have found in Sarah Palin a Republican William Jennings Bryan. Now, Why would they want someone who lost the presidency three times?" asked Will.
John Amato: David Brooks has never been much of a fan of Palin. This is from a piece in Oct, 2008:
[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party.
--
But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

the media are the only ones that think Palin is important to talk about. The f**kin book is down to $4.99 a copy. Why does that make it a major topic for Sunday taalk shows?
Like it or not, Sarah Palin is the pin-up girl of the cracker trash Tea Bag movement. The book has been marked down because most of her admirers don't know how to read.
it's more important to be an owner than a reader.
Anyone who has no authority over the nature of their work is working class. They are the majority in this country and I commiserate with them.
Between 60% and 80% depending on how you count.
The Capitalist class, which is ONE PER CENT, has found it useful to make the majority of people THINK they, the workers are actually MIDDLE CLASS.
Middle managers, professional specialists with some authority over the nature of their work, they are middle class. They are far fewer than imagined.
Small business owners technically are of the Capitalist class but I would suggest that if they ever work next to their employees, and that happens with somewhere generally fewer than twenty workers, then they might be stated as being in the middle class.
The middle class may side with the workers or they may side with the Capitalists, and that is not so surprising.
What is is astonishing is that ANY working class person would side with the Capitalists and yet that is what we have with Reagan Democrats and Southern strategy Republican converts of the rural South.
It was not so with FDR who united the working class of north and south. The Republican party almost disappeared.
But the political parties have devolved very much from then, particularly the Democrats.
I am distressed that the working class are hoodwinked into thinking that:
1) - the Republican party, one faction of the Party of Power and Privilege, has anything but scorn for working class people.
2) - that someone with no qualifications for the job, could be president. But then Sarah Palin is a Theocrat. No qualifications other than faith are needed.
But I am equally distressed that so many people on the apparent left are hoodwinked into believing that the Democratic party, long the other faction of the Party of Power and Privilege has anything but scorn for working class people EITHER. We have just witnessed the most massive transfer of wealth in the history of the world, the Bankster bailouts, this at the hands of the first black President. The Capitalist class is thrilled with the Democrats so far.
It is class warfare and the working class has lost, completely.
As Jay Gould said: I can hire half of the working class to kill the other half.
Today the Robber Barons don't even need hire us. The process of divide and conquer is all junk politics which is what the Capitalist class prefers.
not just about Miss Sarah and all the amped-up hoopla about her
'book' (like she wrote it?!) and the ongoing drama about the supposed 'health care reform bills': all of this crap is more distraction, while the Capitalist class, as you call them, set up the next fraud.
And, I'm pretty sure there will be one - that is another gigantic swindle and transfer of wealth in addition to what the insurance companies are about to reap - but maybe they'll wait until after the holidays, as they don't want to appear to be completely heartless.
We are so screwed.
The next fraud is on the way, it is absolutely guaranteed.
It is setup that way. The Banksters are now even more consolidated and powerful.
The fourteen trillion that we have handed over to them (never mind the prattle about a mere $700 billion bailout) has been leveraged for the next bust.
We will bail them out again until we can bail no more, then it is onto the dust heap of history.
Nomi Prins gives a good talk here
I just wanted to compliment you on a very well thought out comment which includes such bonuses as correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. No CAPS SHOUTING, no textese, no apostrophe abuse, no name calling. If you are not a political blogger or columnist already, surely you should be. I would subscribe.
I'm still in shock over this comment. Again, thank you!
Shows how old I am.
Women should be offended by her story. She is an insult to women, not to mention people everywhere. I just don't understand what anyone see's in Palin, except maybe she makes people feel smarter and they like that feeling. I just don't know!
Ifill sorta had a good point, because Sarah Palin does resonate with women who are ignorant, home bound and indoctrinated by the rednecks that surround them.
Everyone who knows a Palin knows what a damaging pain they are.
I've worked with Palin women before. They claim to be feminists but they are not. They are full of undeserved entitlement. They are for themselves only, and anyone who they think is in their way becomes their focus to be destroyed or eliminated.
They are usually attractive, and they use that for manipulation and intimidation. Notice they will never have more attractive women around them for long. Any woman who works for them has to be less attractive than they are, or they won't last long.
If they are a co-worker, you will either be their best friend or their worst enemy - no inbetween - depending on how they can best use you. But everybody is expendable to their goal of getting ahead.
If they are a boss, then they will treat all the women under them as potential threats and/or menial servants. Men they manipulate. Everybody is simply a means to an end to them. They will lie like rugs to get their way. They will do everything except actually work - that's for everyone else to do - they're just there to move ahead. As soon as they get as far as they can go on their lies and manipulation, they will quit for something better.
If they are your neighbor, they may be nice to you, but they will never trust you because they'll be afraid you'll find out whatever secrets their households have, so most neighbors will be enemies - although you probably will spend more time with their kids than they do and they won't hesitate to dump their kids on you because they are only interested in their kids for show - and the kids know it.
If they are a family member, they will assume that they are the matriarch of the family when it comes to demanding respect and getting their way, but never for chipping in and helping out with anything resembling actual work. And they will always be at the center of family fueds - there will always be a fight with someone and they will always be at the center of it and always the victim.
Drawn to Sarah? Man, I run the opposite direction when I see one now. They are chaos on two legs, all they leave behind them is a trial of destruction no matter where they go.
Look at Palin; her family has been embroiled in feuds of one kind or another for years, she says in her book that her neighbors probably didn't like her - because of her kids , she either quit every job or left every job in a state of disarray, as soon as she got the most out of it with the least work, she's easily caught in her lies. She lives high off the hog and claims all priveleges for herself, but left Wasilla, then Alaska, deep in debt when she walked away, but she walked away richer.
I know women like her can be compelling and attractive. They cultivate their ability to attract people because they need them to get what they want, but they leave a trail of hurt people and enemies when they dump those they no longer need. Just like Palin has.
I find her repelling, not compelling.
the 11 remaining "reasonable" Republicans desperately tell themselves to pretend that their Party hasn't been completely consumed by its yahoo bigot Base.
show them. That title is a pretty clear signal.
She is gonna bust it all apart in 2012. Rogue party and all.
That's what people thought about idiotic, B movie actors and yet the country is still suffering the effects of the "Reagan Years."
She's a joke and they were willing to have her one heartbeat away from running the country. What does that make them?
heartbeat away from running the country. What does that make them?"
A bigger joke. The problem being....this joke is anything BUT funny.....................
are so GD awful...why did the wingnuts support both of these idiots for Pres and VP? Where was this faux outrage about Bush when he was President or when Palin was running for VP? More grouching from the loser party. They only whine and complain when their idiots lose or f*ck up royally.
When their idiots f*ck up royally they blame us. Because they are liars or idiots.
Ifel is a tool of the repukes. A black woman advising that Palin is not to be under estimated just makes no logical sense. The only thing Palin would be good for is Milf Porn, that's about it.

Shut up. You missed her point.
We have junk politics.
The entire process is a joke.
The New York Times here on the speeches of house members written by lobbyists.
Our government is bought and paid for. They hardly even make a pretense about it any longer.
There is an ad here from boldprogressive.org lambasting democrats who voted no on the health care bill.
The BULLSHIT corporate giveaway and WEALTHCARE welfare pseudo health REFORM piece of crap, and these people have the NERVE to call themselves bold progressives.
John Pilger for a reality check, Obama and Empire here
Spot-on, as usual.

Is this comparison for real?? That's like comparing chimpy w. bushmaster to Albert Einstein.. PALIN is better compared to Larry the cable guy...on a bad day....
Isnt Joe the Plumber a more apt comparison?
Shhh, don't invoke his name. It's possible his 15 minutes have *finally* elapsed. Best not to jinx it.
She's a boob.
Tune in Tokyo?
Sarah Palin said on her Facebook page after the NY-23 election for US Rep went to the Democratic candidate instead of the guy she backed: "The cause goes on." She doesn't mean backing conservative candidates to supercede moderate GOP candidates in upcoming elections.
Sarah Palin's very psyche is steeped in the evangelical theocratic movement, as countless previous commentaries have noted. Nearly every page of her book refers in some way to God. The book is now in its second printing, there are so many people buying it.
"Gryphen", an Alaskan blogger who knows the Palin Saga about as well as anyone can, just wrote an eyeopening blog entry that clarifies what Palin's real goal may be, and it's a bit scary. If you've ever read Leah Burton's "God's Own Party" blogspot ( http://godsownparty.com/blog/ but most particularly http://godsownparty.com/blog/2009/11/stealth-... ), you know both of them have "nailed it", and that national pundits like David Brooks and comedians such as the SNL bunch should not be so dismissive of the Palin movement.
For more, read http://theimmoralminority.blogspot.com/2009/1...
It's the entire "evangelical and biblical purist" segment of our society, as Gryphen puts it, who will put Sarah Palin's book on the same bookshelf as their Bible, and they will refer to it every time they are looking for inspiration to tackle the difficulties in their life.
the theocratic movement is just one more train for her to hitch a ride on. She would drop God in a heartbeat if she thought He was holding her back - and she would think she knows best!
... didn't have that come-hither, high-heeled MILF look, she would have been long forgotten by now. It attests to the brain-dead sexism of much of America (mostly stupid white males) that physical appearance trumps anything to do with honesty, intellect, compassion or other salutary attributes.
She's a malignant narcissist, period.

she's GILF material now. Not that I'd want to, even if I were inclined that way. But I like to be accurate. She's a granny...
My son and I were discussing the fact that if she looked like the Cheer Bright washer woman from the commercials, the Horny Old Goat party would have nothing to do with her. We would never even have heard of her.
The wingnuts are buying the book for the picture of their trailer trash queen. They sure are not reading a book just as she didn't write the book. It is for porn purposes only.
Are you all going to vote for Palin because you find her story compelling? I'm guessing not but the able leadership of the RNC apparently thinks that strategy might have a shot.
David Brooks is a joke. His next book will no doubt be about Palin.

Faux News Sunday had Sen. Mitch McComical as a guest. Yes, I know, his official website says "McConnell," but he's lying. I don't even think he was born in the United States. You can tell he's comical because each time he opens his mouth he says something ridiculous. If lies were lice he'd have even redder skin on his cracker neck. He wouldn't tell the truth if it suited him better.
And he really is comical. For example, in a futile effort to make it appear that many Dems are in agreement with the Repubs, he made reference to "liberal columnists like David Broder." With that one, McComical went over the top. I fell out of my seat onto the floor, laughing hysterically.
Sees what a joke that have made of themselves? Buy being over paid liars?
Sarah Palin walks into a bar...
Knock, knock. Who's there? Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin, who?
She's baaaaack. Truly, it is incomprehensible that Palin should have garnered any more than a passing media and public fancy. Instead we've got a feeding frenzy and way too much publicity for someone, who at best, is a mere polebrity. Gwen Ifill believes women respond to the former governor's rhetoric if not her antics but I'll take that to be a joke told with a poker-faced. Women are smarter than that and certainly smarter than Palin who is not at all smart. Now let's all get smart and ignore her. That wannabe is oh, so boooooring!
“Disillusioned” is the word that best describes how many Americans feel after eight years of George Bush and the election of Barack Obama a year ago. Republicans had a majority in congress and the presidency, yet achieved little for Middle America. They betrayed voters by inflating the deficit and growing government, sending men and women into nation-building wars whose purposes are still unknown, and created a culture of moral and ethical corruption in Washington D.C. It was under lax and pathetic regulatory oversight that a Republican president and Republican congress allowed corporations to betray shareholders with questionable and highly leveraged credit default swaps, only to be followed by a $700 billion taxpayer bailout created by the Bush administration—so much for limited government. Republicans are a party without a message and without a messenger.
Last week’s election results in Virginia and New Jersey, where Republican candidates for governor triumphed over their Democrat opponents, say more about the public’s rejection of Obama’s big government solutions and less about Republicans articulating a message to help Middle America. If Republicans think the public is embracing the party again, they are simply whistling past the graveyard, drunk on their own greed, and completely out of touch with the needs of Middle America.
Not that Democrats are offering any worthwhile solutions to address the most pressing needs of Middle America—job creation—but at least Democrats are intellectually honest about their desire for big government, universal healthcare, taxpayer-funded abortions, labor union power, and a litigious society for plaintiff lawyers to fleece the public. There is something, dare I say “refreshing and frank” about knowing where Democrats are on issues that impact Middle America, whereas Republicans pretend to be something they are not.
It is time for the Republican party to stop blindly whoring for the business community and begin addressing the issues that impact Middle America—job creation, affordable healthcare for all, and quality public education for our children. Republicans are a one-trick-pony, where “tax cuts” are their solution for all of Middle America’s problems. It’s because the party cannot articulate rational policy solutions to the real problems we face.
Take healthcare for instance; the Republican solution has been health savings accounts (HSAs). Are you kidding me? We can’t get people to save money in IRAs, never mind HSAs. That’s the best Republicans have got? Why don’t Republicans push to allow consumers to shop for healthcare across state lines, require everyone to have healthcare, and deny insurers from rejecting consumers with pre-existing conditions?
If Democrats have any hope of maintaining power, they too need to put viable solutions on the table for Middle America, where people care a hell of a lot more about jobs and the economy than government-run healthcare, union card check, the protection of gays from hate crimes, and cap and trade. Both parties have failed miserably to address the needs of Middle America, which I suppose is why I feel so disillusioned with both parties.
