David Brooks: Limbaugh health care rhetoric 'insane'

Conservative columnist David Brooks thinks Rush Limbaugh has gone too far in comparing President Barack Obama to Hitler. Brooks was stunned by the comparison when he first saw it on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday. "I hadn't seen the Rush Limbaugh thing. That is insane. What he's saying is insane," said Brooks.
Brooks went on to criticize Sarah Palin for saying that health care reform would create a "death panel" to euthanize older Americans. "Again, that's crazy. The crazies are attacking the plan because it'll cut off granny, and that's simply not true. That simply is not going to happen," explained Brooks.

For a weasel-y, smug Republican apologist, sometimes Brooks displays an almost decent, sensible, human-like quality.
Sorta like Bill Kristol with a brain and a soul or something.
Brooks has been doing that a lot lately.

Might be possible there's a Republican beltway movement personified by people like Brooks to "take back" the party from the crazies. The few sane Republicans that are left are downright embarrassed.
Brooks, and anyone like him who retains any semblance of critical thinking, is crazy to stay with the Republican party. FOX, Rush, Palin, et al are taking that party to the looney bin for the criminally insane, and Brooks may deserve to get thrown in with them if he doesn't bolt soon.
I agree. I like to see Brooks and Shields (sp) on PBS. They have an intelligent debate. He is a true Conservative and not a neo-con.

..for every person that gets on the TeeVee machine and points out that Limbaugh and Palin are insane (didn't Palin get that meme from Michele Bachmann?) the Lamestream Media will put ten people on who will say that a) yeah sure they're crazy, but not nearly crazy enough and b) the Liberal Media is unfairly attacking our talking points.
And the worst of it is, the 'liberal media' moderator that invited the wingnut onto their show, be it Wolff Blather or Yawn King or any of dozens of others, will simply nod their head sagely as if in silent agreement and let it go unchallenged.
The loons and their insurance/pharma sponsors are going all-out to kill health care reform while congress is on vakay.
Those of us in the reality-based community have got to respond as strongly as we did to defeat McLame-Palin. This is not a game, these sick bastards are going to use every dirty trick and spend every last dollar to defeat reform. We have to put up or shut up. I'm donating money every week to pro-reform campaigns, and I'll be contacting congressmen and senators every damn day once the break is over.
They may be a loud minority, but we're still the majority. It's time to prove it.

Brooks reminds me why he is my favorite conservative columnist. For while I disagree with him often, I can at least RESPECT him.
I disagree with him most of the time, but it wouldn't be healthy for democracy if all citizens walked in lockstep - the way Rush/Coulter/Malkin/Beck/Cheney/Hannity think they should.
Brooks makes an intelligent assessment and reaches a different conclusion than I - that's fine. Never once have I heard him make a personal attack on the integrity, patriotism or intelligence of a liberal.

I'm sick of hearing this "patriotic" garbage. It's the stuff of Glenn Beck and douche Limpballs. I heard Limpballs say a couple of months ago that if, when, and once an Obama plan is passed, then that's the start of losing our liberties big time.
I lived in The Netherlands for 4 years, where the highest tax rate I think was 52%. I didn't have any liberties taken away. In fact, I felt as if I have more there than here. Not that I took advantage of this, but prostitution and marijuana are legal (ok, I admit to visiting a few coffee shops for the latter); I also admit to legally purchasing a few Cuban cigars, which I cannot buy here. I've seen political protests en masse (once saw a huge protest of Kurds protesting the imprisonment of their captured PKK leader, Ocalan); you can go to any restaurant you want; you can buy any car you want; you can buy a home if you want; elections are free; I simply do not know what "liberties" we would lose if anybody's tax rates go up.
Further, even if tax rates go up, most of our upper income tax brackets during the 20th century were much higher than they are now. I'm talking, for the very top wage earners, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and even over 90% during the latter years of WWII (and even over 90% from 1951 through 1963). Does this guy mean to tell me that we did not have "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" during most of the 20th century?

The thing about Palin is, many say she is dumb; I believe that, with the exception of one thing. What Palin said on Friday on Facebook might not be insane in her own mind because she likely is KNOWINGLY LYING about the "death panels." She KNOWS what she's doing; she's raising fear in those who like her. And, to that extent, Sarah Palin is in her own words, very, very "evil."

president Obama should take his message about health care to the masses via Tv informercials. He can show people what his plan is and how it works. People are said to be getting healthier so that means health cost will go down. Tax cigarettes, booze and fast foods to death and every one pitch in a little more according to gross income not adjusted. Health care prices will come tumbling down, do the informercials president Obama. Please!

Yeah, let's try to be bipartisan, I want to reduce the rate of growth of health care costs and find some way to insure the 47 million uninsured Americans, and you want to prove Obama is a muslim illegal alien, set up Talibanistan West, and end all government regulation and turn the country over to Walmart and Coca-Cola. I'm sure there's a lot of common ground.
2. "Obama didn't want to be bipartisan." Really, David? So, all that, "we need Republicans", "I want to be President for all Americans", "Let's listen to Chuck Grassley", you missed all that?
3. "House plan causes 8% annual increase in out-year costs." According to whom? The Lewin Group? The CBO wouldn't estimate the effect of the public option on costs, but it didn't say they would go up. Which sphincter did you pull that from, David?
By the current corporate media standards, the only debate worth having is one that includes inflammatory rhetoric, controversial opinions or out-and-out lies.
You can still turn to PBS for actual news and differing opinions. Unfortunately, not many do.

Last Friday on the Shields and Brooks segment of the MacNeil/Lehrer news hour. Brooks was playing the everybody does this stuff including the left routine. Of course Shields let that meme go by unchallenged.
They should have pushed for single payer from the start. Then the insurance companies would have jumped at this compromise of just offering a public option and letting the thieving bastard insurance companies continue to screw the public. WE NEED SINGLE PAYER. We should be showing up in droves at the town hall meetings and drowning out the astroturfers with demands for single payer health care, and health care for all Americans.
It's like the entire enormous corporate apparatus got together and decided in private to take single payer off the proverbial table and that was history.
